Western Dental Supports Expansion of Medi-Cal Coverage to Undocumented Children

The passage of SB 75 makes children under 19 years of age eligible for full-scope Medi-Cal Dental Program (also known as Denti-Cal) benefits regardless of immigration status. The bill allows California to expand its health coverage to 170,000 undocumented immigrant children.

Many of these families are concentrated in larger urban areas, but the California Department of Health Care Services estimates about one-sixth of the newly eligible low-income undocumented children live in the agricultural areas of Sacramento and Kern counties. In many of these rural areas, Western Dental is the only dentist in town.

Research by health advocates indicates that the dental problems experienced by many low-income California children are largely preventable. The newly expanded coverage due to the passage of SB 75 is great news for children of all ages. According to Children Now & the Children’s Movement of California, children covered by Medicaid are more likely to graduate from high school, attend college, experience fewer emergency room visits, and earn more money as adults.

Advanced treatment for addiction to benzodiazepines effective in 94 percent of patients

“Black Henna” Tattoos May Put You at Risk

Unlike permanent tattoos which are injected into the skin, temporary tattoos marketed as “henna” are applied to the skin’s surface and usually last two to four weeks. Henna is a reddish-brown coloring made from a flowering plant that grows in regions of Africa and Asia. For centuries, people have used henna to dye skin, hair, and fingernails. Henna body art – sometimes also called mehndi – is still used around the world to decorate the skin in cultural festivals and celebrations.

However, just because a henna tattoo is temporary that doesn’t mean it is risk free. Today, so-called “black henna” is often used in place of traditional henna and is potentially harmful. Inks marketed as “black henna” – or sometimes simply as “henna” – may actually be hair dye or a mix of henna with other ingredients. The extra ingredient used to darken henna is often a coal-tar hair dye containing p-phenylenediamine (PPD), which can cause dangerous reactions in some people. By law, PPD is not permitted in cosmetics intended for staining the skin. Henna is permitted as a hair coloring.

You may see “black henna” used in places such as temporary tattoo kiosks at beaches, boardwalks, and other holiday destinations, as well as some ethnic or specialty shops. While states have jurisdiction over professional practices such as tattooing and cosmetology, that oversight differs from state to state. So, depending on where you are, it’s possible no one is checking to make sure that the artist is following safe practices.

A number of consumers have learned the risks the hard way. Reactions may occur immediately after the application of “black henna” temporary tattoos or even up to two or three weeks later. Reported problems include redness, blisters, raised red weeping lesions, loss of pigmentation, increased sensitivity to sunlight, and even permanent scarring. Some reactions have led to medical treatment, including emergency room visits and ongoing skin sensitivity that can affect day to day activities.

Some people may experience cross-sensitization, meaning that because of a previous exposure and a bad reaction to that chemical, they become sensitized (allergic) to related compounds, such as rubber and other latex products, certain medications, hair dye ingredients, and textile dyes.

Powertrain

The 2017 Accord Hybrid features a significantly reengineered second-generation two-motor hybrid powertrain. The new hybrid powertrain benefits from numerous changes that reduce the physical size and weight of components while increasing efficiency, performance and cargo capacity. Total combined horsepower is up 16 horsepower to 212 HP and EPA fuel economy ratings are 49/47/48 mpg (city/highway/combined)1. These EPA fuel economy ratings are based on the new more stringent ratings requirements enacted by the U.S. EPA for the 2017 model year and cannot be directly compared to the figures for earlier model Accords or competing vehicles. Nevertheless, when compared using the same criteria, the 2017 Accord Hybrid bests the 2014/2015 model in all ratings.

Advanced Safety Performance

In keeping with Honda’s commitment to safety, the 2017 Accord Hybrid is the first Honda vehicle to have as standard equipment the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies. Honda Sensing is designed to expand the driver’s situational awareness while sensing and responding to potential road hazards, including other vehicles, road obstacles and even pedestrians, even to the point of mitigating the possibility or severity of a collision.

The 2017 Accord Hybrid is expected to receive the highest safety ratings – a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), including a GOOD rating in all crash modes.

The Accord Hybrid incorporates Honda’s next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, designed to more efficiently absorb and disperse the energy from a frontal collision, along with new ultra-high-strength door rings designed to help better protect occupants.

Standard safety and driver-assistive features include four-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Brake Assist and Hill Start Assist; Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control; an Expanded View Driver’s Mirror; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, driver and front passenger side airbags and side-curtain airbags for all outboard seating positions; and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
