Statement Of Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, President, March Of Dimes On President Obama Signing The Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act Into Law

WASHINGTON, Dec. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The March of Dimes released today the following statement from President Dr. Jennifer L. Howse as President Barack Obama signed into law H.R. 1281, the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act:

“The President’s signature into law of the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act represents an important step toward maintaining and improving the federal programs that support the state-based newborn screening enterprise.  As a result, parents will be guaranteed the peace of mind that their newborns will be screened for dozens of disorders that could threaten their lives or health.  If one of those rare disorders is detected, infants will be able to receive the treatment that will enable them to lead healthy, productive lives.

“The March of Dimes is deeply grateful to our Congressional champions for their steadfast commitment to passage of this law:  Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC), Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA) and Representative Mike Simpson (D-ID).  Their tireless advocacy for the health of newborns made this new law possible.  We also appreciate the significant effort dedicated by the chairs, ranking members, and staff of both the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

“Ultimately, passage of this bill demonstrates that issues of maternal and child health can unite policymakers across boundaries of party, geography, and political viewpoint.  It involved over two years of education, advocacy, and negotiation, navigating significant obstacles along the way.  It’s our hope that the ultimate success of bills like this one can help set the stage in Congress for greater bipartisan cooperation and a return to regular order in pursuing our shared goal of improving the health and lives of the American people.”

The March Of Dimes Greets The New Year With Six Simple Resolutions For A Healthy Pregnancy

January is

Birth Defects Prevention Month and National Folic Acid Awareness Week

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Dec. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The March of Dimes is encouraging women who are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant, to make a New Year’s resolution to be as healthy as they can, including taking a daily multivitamin containing folic acid every day to prevent serious birth defects of the brain and spine.

The March of Dimes Greets the New Year With Six Simple Resolutions for a Healthy Pregnancy

“A mom’s health during pregnancy has a direct impact on her baby’s health,” said Dr. Siobhan Dolan, a medical advisor to the March of Dimes and co-author of the non-profit’s book Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby: The Ultimate Pregnancy Guide. “There are many things a woman can do to help give her baby the best opportunity to be born healthy.”

Birth defects affect 1 in every 33 babies born in the United States each year, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

January is Birth Defects Prevention Month, and the week of Jan 5th through 12th is set aside for Folic Acid Awareness Week. Folic acid is a B vitamin proven to prevent serious birth defects of the brain and spine known as neural tube defects (NTDs), such as spina bifida and anencephaly.

About half of pregnancies are unplanned. The March of Dimes urges all women of childbearing age to take a multivitamin containing 400 micrograms of folic acid every day prior to conceiving and 600 to 800 micrograms after becoming pregnant.  It’s also good to eat foods that contain folate, the natural form of folic acid, including lentils, green leafy vegetables, black beans, and orange juice. In addition, there also are some foods fortified with folic acid, such as enriched grain products (bread, pasta, and cereals).

Besides taking a daily multivitamin containing folic acid, here are other resolutions for women who may become pregnant:

  • Don’t smoke and avoid second hand smoke. Smoking increases the risk of premature birth and the risk of oral clefts.
  • Don’t use alcohol or illegal drugs. They can cause lifelong health problems for the baby, including fetal alcohol syndrome.
  • Check with your doctor before taking any medication, including herbal products, prescription pain medications, and statins. Some studies have found that women who took some prescriptions pain medications had a higher risk of having a baby with a heart defect, spina bifida, or gastroschisis, a hole in the abdominal wall.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Being very overweight or underweight can increase the risk of prematurity and birth defects.
  • Be Food Smart.  Avoid fish high in mercury or lead, raw and undercooked meat and unpasteurized juice and dairy products and reduce caffeine.

“The New Year will be full of surprises.  So even if you’re not pregnant, but want children in the future, resolve to help give them a healthy start in life,” said Dr. Dolan.

The March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health.  For more than 75 years, moms and babies have benefited from March of Dimes research, education, vaccines, and breakthroughs.  Find out how you can help raise funds to prevent premature birth and birth defects by walking in March for Babies at marchforbabies.org. State Farm® Survey Reveals Lack of Awareness and Understanding of Renters Insurance Among U.S. Hispanics

BLOOMINGTON, Ill., Dec. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Only twenty nine percent of Hispanics who rent their homes report having renters insurance, according to a new survey by State Farm. In fact, among respondents without renters insurance more than one third (34%) said they had never heard of renters insurance. Further, most overestimated the cost of coverage and underestimated the value of their property. Not having renters insurance could leave Hispanic families vulnerable to a financial catastrophe especially during the holiday season.

To view the multimedia assets associated with this release, please click: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/72928515-state-farm-hispanic-renters-survey/

The study comprised of over 500 renters was designed to gauge awareness and understanding of renters insurance in the Hispanic community. Results indicated that almost half (43%) of survey respondents without renters insurance think they cannot afford it. However, 88% of respondents overestimated what a typical renters policy costs per month, with over half thinking it costs $50 or more a month, when in many cases renters insurance can cost as little as $12 a month.

“There seem to be some misconceptions when it comes to renters insurance,” said Stephanie Colegrove, Operations Vice President – Underwriting. “We want everyone to know that if their possessions are stolen during a break-in, or damaged by a fire or another covered loss, a renters insurance policy can help them replace their valuables.”

Over 50 percent of respondents also believe their belongings are worth less than $10,000. In fact, personal belongings – including clothes, furniture and electronics – can cost much more to replace. Replacing those belongings could create a significant financial burden.

According to a 2013 State of Hispanic Homeownership report the number of Hispanic households has grown from 9.2 million in 2000 to 14.7 million in 2013[1], representing a growth rate of 60 percent with Hispanic households representing over half of all renters[2].  As more Hispanic families rent their primary residences, understanding the benefit of having renters insurance will become increasingly important.

Renters insurance can be a great gift for the family this holiday providing the security of being able to recover from the unexpected. For more information on the misconceptions about renters insurance go to statefarm.com.

About the Survey
In August of 2014, the State Farm Strategic Resources Department used an outside panel vendor to conduct an online survey with a representative sample of the U.S. Hispanic population by age, gender, region and preferred language of the survey. Survey responses were received from 539 renters who identified themselves as being 18 or older, Hispanic or Latino, responsible for making household insurance decisions, and having at least one major insurance product (auto, home/renters, or individual life) with any insurer.

About State Farm:
State Farm and its affiliates are the largest provider of car insurance in the U.S. and is a leading insurer in Canada. In addition to providing auto insurance quotes, their 18,000 agents and more than 65,000 employees serve almost 84 million policies and accounts – approximately 82 million auto, home, life, health and commercial policies in the United States and Canada, and nearly 2 million bank accounts. Commercial auto insurance, along with coverage for renters, business owners, boats and motorcycles, is available. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company is the parent of the State Farm family of companies. State Farm is ranked No. 41 on the 2014 Fortune 500 list of largest companies.
