Statement by Dr. Samuel Rodriguez, President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC), Regarding the Supreme Court Decision on Sebelius vs. Hobby Lobby

SACREMENTO, Calif., June 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — “By ruling in favor of Hobby Lobby, the Supreme Court affirmed the distinct God-given right of conscience and religious freedom, which empowers the individual to embrace life, advance liberty and pursue happiness without having to sacrifice faith or conscience on the altar of expediency. For that matter, I do believe that while this outcome validates this fundamental right, the many threats in both culture and society make religious liberty the quintessential civil rights issue of the 21st century. For people of faith, this decision requires both celebration and a renewed commitment to vigilance, as today’s complacency is tomorrow’s captivity.”

The NHCLC is the largest Hispanic Christian organization representing millions of Evangelicals, 40,118 U.S churches and more than 500,000 churches across the globe. Seeking to reconcile evangelist Billy Graham’s message of salvation with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s march of prophetic activism, the NHCLC emphasizes “7 Directives” of Life, Family, Compassionate Evangelism, Stewardship, Justice, Education and Youth. Simon Pagenaud completes Honda sweep of the 2014 Grand Prix of Houston with victory in Race 2.

Honda Completes Houston Sweep

HOUSTON, June 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Honda-powered Simon Pagenaud dominated Sunday’s second race of the Grand Prix of Houston Presented by the Greater Houston Honda Dealers, “double header” Verizon IndyCar Series race weekend, taking a commanding lead in the second half of the 90-lap contest and maintaining his advantage though several late-race caution flags.

It was Pagenaud’s second victory of 2014, following his earlier triumph at the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis in May, and Honda’s fifth Indy car victory of the season. After stalking pole qualifier and early leader Helio Castroneves for the opening half of the race, Pagenaud made his move for the lead on a Lap 49 restart. Once in front, the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver was never headed, maintaining his advantage even through the final round of pit stops.

Pagenaud’s rookie teammate, Mikhail Aleshin, made it the first-ever 1-2 finish for the Schmidt Peterson team while yet another rookie, Jack Hawksworth, completed Sunday’s podium sweep for Honda with a third-place finish for Bryan Herta Autosport. Honda-powered rookies also starred in Saturday’s opening race, won by first-year Indy car driver Carlos Huertas, with Rookie of the Year leader Carlos Munoz finishing third in his Andretti Autosports Honda, behind former series champion Juan Pablo Montoya.

Today’s double header race weekend in Houston began a run of six races during a four-week period. The Verizon IndyCar Series now travels to Pennsylvania for the July 6 Pocono INDYCAR 500, the second leg of the oval track “triple crown” of 500-mile races.

Simon Pagenaud (#77 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda) Houston Race 2 winner: “It was an awesome race, the car was just beautiful. We had such a fast car this weekend. It had grip, it had traction and the Honda engine had plenty of power. We regrouped after [a disappointing race weekend in] Detroit and the team came up with this package. Whew, it was really hot out there today, but a great day for the entire team.”

Tom Reichenbach (Senior Manager, Chief Engineer, Technical Division) on today’s race win and weekend sweep for Honda: “This was a great weekend for Honda, with two wins and five out of six possible podium finishes, it just doesn’t get much better. In the two-week break since our last race, at Texas, everyone at HPD has been working very hard to improve the performance and driveability of the Honda Indy V6, and I think you saw the results of those efforts this weekend. We’re always looking forward at HPD, and it was encouraging to see the strong performances from all of our Honda Indycar Series rookies this weekend. They’re the future of our sport, and we had all four full-season rookie drivers on the podium this weekend! Congratulations to Simon Pagenaud, Mikhail Aleshin and the entire Schmidt Peterson team, and to everyone at HPD. Now let’s go out and get another ‘500’ victory next week at Pocono.”

Terrifying And Enigmatic Creatures Emerge From The Darkness During Monster Week On Discovery en Espanol

The hair-raising stunt kicks off with a new season of River Monsters in Latin America

MIAMI, June 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Monster Week premieres on Discovery en Espanol with five mystery-filled nights about strange creatures that lurk in dark corners of the Earth.  The first-ever Monster Week, airing July 14 through 18 at 7PM E/ 8PM P, includes the new season of the popular series MONSTRUOS DE RIO (River Monsters) with biologist and extreme angler Jeremy Wade and the premiere of the specials MEGALODON VIVE (Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives) and EL YETI RUSO (Russian Yeti), among others.

Beginning Monday, the new season of MONSTRUOS DE RIO airs Monday through Friday at 7PM E/ 8PM P, and follows Jeremy Wade on a journey through South America to track down dangerous freshwater species suspected of attacks on humans.  Among the cases he investigates is the sinking of the Sobral Santos, one of the Amazon’s largest maritime disasters. That night, as many as 200 passengers lost their lives, and something in the water is being blamed for many of the deaths. Wade is hell bent on finding out what it was…or is.

“I’ve been fishing the world for decades, but it is the Amazon that keeps calling me back,” Jeremy Wade commented.  “This time, I returned to solve the mission of a lifetime as I spent an entire year going farther, deeper and more remote that I’ve even been before.”

Also on Monday night, Discovery en Espanol presents the premiere of MEGALODON VIVE at 9PM E/P.  The two-hour special takes viewers on a search for a massive killer great white shark responsible for a chain of fatalities off the coast of South Africa.  According to a theory proposed by a controversial scientist, this could be the work of Megalodon, a fearsome fish measuring 18 meters long and a close relative of the great white shark, one of history’s biggest and most fearsome predators.

Not all of the action during Monster Week takes place in the water. EL YETI RUSO investigates the deaths of a group of students who set off on an excursion in the Ural Mountains in 1959 and whose bodies were found half-naked and mutilated.  Fifty-five years later, American explorer Mike Libecki analyzes evidence that suggests that the students could have been killed by a creature thought only to exist in folklore. EL YETI RUSO premieres Thursday, July 17 at 9PM E/P.

Monster Week concludes on Friday, July 18 with the specials SIRENAS (Mermaids) and SIRENAS: NUEVAS EVIDENCIAS (Mermaids: The New Evidence) at 8PM E/ 5PM P.

Honda Wins in Houston

— Honda-powered Carlos Huertas claims first IndyCar Series victory

— First of two IndyCar races in Houston this weekend

— Honda powers seven of top nine finishers

HOUSTON, June 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Honda-powered rookie Carlos Huertas won Saturday’s opening race of the Grand Prix of Houston Presented by the Greater Houston Honda Dealers, “double header” Verizon IndyCar Series race weekend, taking his Dale Coyne Racing machine to an unexpected victory in an 80-lap event that featured constantly changing weather conditions.

Photo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20140629/122893
Logo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20140415/73520

Today’s race was marked by a brief, heavy rain shower less than half an hour before the scheduled start, leading officials to declare the event a “wet race,” requiring teams to start on rain tires and for the race to become a one hour, 50-minute timed event.  The wet/dry conditions also contributed to a total of six caution flags and, as in Detroit earlier this month, multiple pit stop strategies throughout the field.

The early laps were dominated by Detroit pole qualifier Takuma Sato, driving for hometown legend A.J. Foyt Racing.  But Sato’s run ended after 32 laps when he tangled with the lapped car of Mikhail Aleshin.  James Hinchcliffe then took over at the front, as Honda-powered drivers led all 80 laps of today’s race.

But a decision by Huertas’ Dale Coyne Racing team to make an early final pit stop proved decisive, as Huertas first followed teammate Justin Wilson for 15 laps, then assumed a lead he would not relinquish when Wilson made his final stop on Lap 73.  The victory is the fourth of the season for Honda, and the first for Huertas in his rookie season of IndyCar competition.

The second race of the weekend takes place tomorrow, starting at 3 p.m. EDT with live television coverage on the NBC Sports Network.

Carlos Huertas (#18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda) Houston Race 1 winner:  “For sure, it is always possible to win, but today was really tough.  I had no pace at all during the first half of the race, but our car became much better as the race continued.  The team did a great job, and these races are so long that you always have a chance to win if you do the right thing at the right time.  We made all the right calls today, and this is a great victory both for my team and myself.”

Tom Reichenbach (Senior Manager, Chief Engineer, Technical Division) on today’s race win:  “Whenever you have a rain race, it’s crazy.  And today the conditions were tough for everyone.  You just have to be on top of it, and be prepared to take advantage of the opportunities whenever they come.  Dale Coyne Racing made the right calls, had their drivers in the right place at the right time and it worked out in a victory.  Congratulations to Carlos [Huertas] and the team, and to everyone at HPD.  Now let’s go out and get another win tomorrow.”

“It has been my most sincere privilege to serve the people of South Texas, to help tell the myriad of stories that each dream for themselves and for their families, to witness their struggles against great odds to earn a degree and launch a career and to understand the vast potential of the people of this region that for too long have been denied the opportunities that come from obtaining a college degree,” said Dr. García.

“I am so pleased to recognize and celebrate Juliet García and the amazing work she has done and continues to do on behalf of Latinos and Americans in South Texas,” said Chair Hinojosa. “Her leadership has led to her being recognized as one of the ‘World’s 50 Greatest Leaders’ by Fortune magazine and her personal path and many professional successes prove that the American Dream is achievable through higher education, hard work, and most importantly by giving back to our community.”

Juliet V. García joined The University of Texas System as president of The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) in January 1992 after having served as president of Texas Southmost College (TSC) for six years. When she was named as president of the comprehensive community college in 1986, she became the first Mexican-American woman to become president of a college or university in the United States. She was the second president of UTB and the 12th president of TSC.

Dr. García also has a very strong history of public service. She served as Chair of the Advisory Committee to Congress on Student Financial Assistance and on the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans. She has served on the boards of National Campus Compact, chaired Texas Campus Compact, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and was a member of President-Elect Obama’s Transition Team. Dr. García currently serves on the boards of Ford Foundation, Complete College America and Raise Your Hand Texas.

Early in her professional career, she was named Outstanding Alumnus by The University of Texas at Austin’s College of Communication and in 2007 as a Distinguished Alumna by The University of Texas at Austin. In her home community she has received much recognition including the naming of a middle school in her honor. The history of her leadership chronicles more than two decades of innovation that propelled the development of postsecondary education in Deep South Texas and its international border region.

She was recently named by the University of Texas Board of Regents as the founding executive director of a new University of Texas Institute of the Americas. This Institute will develop the next generation of leaders and provide a nonpartisan venue for discussing global issues. The Institute will also serve as a convening voice to help resolve issues facing the Americas and the Global South and serve as a nexus for interdisciplinary groups to come together and focus on creating core competencies in leadership on critical issues.

CHCI’s 37th Annual Awards Gala will convene the nation’s largest and most prestigious gathering of Hispanic nonpartisan, public, and private sector leaders at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on October 2, 2014. The evening’s festivities will honor CHCI’s past, present, and future and present CHCI’s highest honors—the annual Chair’s Medallion Award and the CHCI Medallion of Excellence awardees. These awards highlight the many rich contributions made by Latinos who have not only succeeded in their individual careers, but who also serve as positive role models and empower Latino youth to believe that anything is achievable through higher education, hard work, and pursuit of the American dream. All events support CHCI’s educational attainment and leadership development programs.

Along with the Gala, CHCI’s Hispanic Heritage Month Events include its Public Policy Conference and Reyes of Comedy. Learn more at hhm.chci.org.
