SACRAMENTO, Calif., April 13, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Rev. Dr. Samuel Rodriguez, President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC), issues the following statement following President Trump’s decision to return power to states to withhold federal funds from abortion providers:

“Today the cause of life took another important step forward and we at the NHCLC are greatly encouraged by this important victory. This bill returns power to the states, where it rightly belongs, by allowing each to choose whether or not to funnel federal money to organizations that provide abortions. We commend President Trump for signing this bill into law and we also applaud Vice President Pence for casting the decisive, tie-breaking vote in the Senate.

“We are now expecting states to act decisively and expeditiously in using the powers provided by this law to defund organizations like Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the country. We reaffirm our belief that taxpayer dollars must never be used to perform abortions. May we as a nation continue to move toward the defense and protection of the unborn in every law we pass and in every dollar we spend.”

The NHCLC serves as a representative voice for the more than 100 million Hispanic Evangelicals assembled in over 40,000 U.S. churches and hundreds of thousands of additional congregations spread worldwide throughout the Spanish-speaking diaspora. Seeking to reconcile evangelist Billy Graham’s message of salvation with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s march of prophetic activism, the NHCLC emphasizes “7 Directives” of Life, Family, Compassionate Evangelism, Stewardship, Justice, Education and Youth.
