Montefiore Statement on NYSNA Strike at Montefiore New Rochelle

Montefiore

NEW YORK, Nov. 30, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — “Today, Montefiore New Rochelle is taking steps to protect the community because NYSNA leadership has chosen to go on strike during the latest surge of COVID-19.

Montefiore

In negotiations over the past 18-months we offered NYSNA:

  • Over 7% in wage increases
  • Medical expenses for retired nurses
  • Tuition reimbursement of $7,500 per year
  • Health insurance with no employee contributions
  • Funding for the NYSNA Pension Fund

To most this would seem like a good deal, even in the absence of the COVID-19 pandemic when hospitals and individuals are struggling financially.

NYSNA is striking because they want the power to dictate staffing assignments and hand out plum positions to their friends, while Montefiore believes the decisions on how to treat patients and make these assignments rests not with any one group alone, but with the entire team caring for the patient.

NYSNA is willfully misleading the public by suggesting that Montefiore New Rochelle is unprepared for the latest COVID-19 surge, when the truth is, in compliance with the Governor’s orders, MNR is stocked with 90 days of PPE for its employees. NYSNA is selfishly putting the community at risk and using COVID-19 as a political football.

We choose patients over NYSNA’s politics.

Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital will remain open but will enact contingency plans, including relocating patients to other facilities to ensure their safety.”

Former Governor of Puerto Rico Statement Regarding Exoneration by Independent Prosecutor

0

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Former Governor Ricardo Rosselló of Puerto Rico was exonerated today after the commonwealth’s Independent Prosecutor (FEI, its acronym in Spanish) released the report on its 16-month investigation that resulted in no charges against Rosselló.

The FEI investigation was launched on July 15, 2019 by the Puerto Rico Independent Prosecutor to examine the leaked – and according to FEI and the Institute for Forensic Sciences of Puerto Rico a document that is not original and is incomplete and modified – text messages.

“First and foremost, I want to thank my wife, Beatriz for being a pillar of strength and love. I also want to thank my children, my entire family, and all of my friends and supporters for their unbending belief and love during this long and arduous process,” said Rosselló. “As I have said all along, this regrettable issue was used by my political opponents to distract attention away from the significant reforms we were achieving on behalf of the people of Puerto Rico – chief among them eliminating the culture of corruption.”

Rosselló points out during his administration the creation of an Inspector General office, a streamlined procurement reform, a turnkey collaborative MOU with the federal government to battle corruption, the first anti-corruption code for the island, regulation of lobbyists by creating the first public registry, a local freedom of information act, and transparency efforts to publish financial data that had previous to his administration always been withheld.

“I regret that as consequence of this issue my administration was thwarted in a sincere desire to faithfully serve the people of Puerto Rico,” he said.

Rosselló, who has an extensive and distinguished background in biosciences, is currently living near Washington, D.C., where he is working the creation of businesses to help address the global pandemic. He is also lecturing graduate classes in government, where he shares some of the lessons learned from his experience in leading Puerto Rico.

“I am grateful to the people of Puerto Rico for allowing me to serve and I am proud of the achievements we made together, under the toughest of circumstances,” Rosselló said. “Facing unprecedented fiscal challenges, economic decay, social stagnation, government structural collapse, an imposed fiscal oversight board, and the impact of two devastating storms in the span of two weeks, we did much to address the corruption, inefficiency and complacency that plagued our government for years. Our accomplishments in streamlining government, reforming the energy, health, and education sectors, reducing crime rates, growing the economy, and advancing the rights of women, the poor, faith-based communities and the LGBTQ communities put Puerto Rico in a better place. While many challenges still lie ahead, I remain confident of a more hopeful future, and that future includes statehood for Puerto Rico.”

“Rising to overcome the challenges of COVID, this year’s summit was an exciting success,” said Richard Zaldivar, Board Chair of Alcohol Justice. “CAPA has developed an intersectional approach to alcohol policy that has earned the respect of public health and safety-minded activists and lawmakers throughout California. We look forward to supporting CAPA’s continuing participation in crafting public policy that places community health and safety over alcohol industry profits.”

#CAPASummit2020 was spread over three successive Fridays that began on November 6th.  In addition to participating in the virtual sessions, CAPA attendees were acknowledged in inspirational video messages by California State Assemblymember Tom Lackey and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer.

“It’s important that we have thoughtful conversations about the potential impact alcohol can have on our health and our communities,” stated California State Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez. “I applaud CAPA for being a unified voice for diverse organizations in California that want to prevent substance abuse and other alcohol-related harm through statewide action.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that public health needs to be reevaluated to provide fair access to all, especially for low earning communities and communities of color,” said California State Assemblymember Monique Limón. “A pandemic of this magnitude comes with many risks and concerns beyond the virus. Losing a loved one, a job, and not interacting with those around you can be very difficult, and for many, it is challenging to seek help. I applaud CAPA for having conversations about the risk of alcohol abuse during these times and interconnecting social justice with public health as we continue seeing the need for improvement in our system.”

“Even though COVID made it impossible to come together physically with activists from throughout the state, we were still able to celebrate past CAPA victories and plan new strategies,”  stated Gilbert Mora, Co-Chair of CAPA. “The virtual turnout produced unexpected moments of deep insight and inspiration. Current core issues leading to specific advocacy and policy change action items.

  • Raise the price of alcohol through taxes and fees, supporting the “Charge for Harm” concept that the industry should pay for treatment, prevention and all other costs to government.
  • Limit alcohol advertising in all media, especially on government-controlled property and where children or targeted populations are exposed.
  • Make the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control effective, efficient, transparent, and accountable to public health and safety concerns of the community, and not to cater to industry profits and license expediency, through policies that reduce alcohol outlet density and increase funding for alcohol control, regulation, and enforcement.
  • Eliminate product lines (such as alcopops and malt liquors) oriented to underage youth and vulnerable or targeted populations.
  • Reduce the allowable blood alcohol content for drivers as “Point .05 Saves Lives”
  • Improve labelling and out-of-home advertising of all alcohol products to ensure a) no marketing to youth, b) no indications of unsubstantiated health claims, c) display of alcohol content by volume and percentage and d) display of harms.

Fundación para la Democracia Panamericana: Two young artists have been condemned to death in Cuba; the only way to save them is to obtain the release of the wrongfully convicted musician Denis Solís

0
Fundacion para la democracia panamericana

MIAMI, Nov. 24, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — A healthy adult can live a maximum of five – at most, seven – days without drinking water under normal conditions. The bodies of Maykel and Luis Manuel are deteriorating at an alarming rate, traces of blood in their urine warn of imminent kidney complications. Doctors warn that multiorgan failure could occur at any time.

Fundacion para la democracia panamericana

Yesterday, at 3:00 PM, marked the 6th day of the hunger and thirst strike that Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel Castillo have maintained from their humble home, in the San Isidro neighborhood of Old Havana. They are demanding the release of 32-year-old Cuban rapper Denis Solís, who was arrested, tried and convicted within 48 hours for ordering a policeman to leave his home after he broke in without permission.

“We are running out of time” said activist and Morris Abram Award recipient Rosa María Payá.

“We have directly requested, and reiterate, our call to the Foreign Action Service of the European Union – which is in the process of dialogue with the Cuban dictatorship – to the ministers of the European Union and the Parliament; to the governments of the Americas; the Catholic Church and the Christian churches in Cuba; the International Red Cross, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet; and His Holiness Pope Francis; so that they intervene before the government in Cuba in favor of the immediate release of rapper Denis Solís and to save the lives of those on strike.”

She went on to say, “The imprisonment of Denis Solís is incompatible with the lives of Luis Manuel and Maykel. It is a basic humanitarian issue. The authorities in Cuba can release Denis Solís on house arrest and send him home now. They can avoid the death of young artists, while clarifying the legal situation of Denis, whose incarceration has been riddled by obvious violations of due process.”

The faces of the 14 people who, in solidarity with Denis, have been subject to a police blockade in the little house of San Isidro since November 16, resemble the faces of all Cubans. Among them are artists, academics, activists, journalists, self-employed workers, scientists —  all children of a broken Cuba that they, as many, refuse to lose.” The siege, maintained by the political police, has prevented representatives of the Catholic church from offering them previously requested religious assistance. As a result, the regime is also in violation of the right of Cuban religious personnel to protect life.

The regime has also prohibited family and friends from giving supplies to those who are not on a hunger strike, and they have banned all the representatives of the diplomatic corps who have wished to examine the status of the strikers. However, at dawn on the fourth day of the strike, an aggressor whom the political police sent and allowed to pass through the barred area, approached the door of the San Isidro residence with a hammer and broke a bottle on the head of artist Luis Manuel Otero. He remains in the house and has yet to receive any medical attention.

The decision to initiate a hunger and thirst strike is the culmination of the extreme situation they are experiencing. These young victims are not alone in being subjected to some of the most brutal harassment and police violence; the citizenry of Cuba is also and is a society that has run out of vital options.

Cuba is in the midst of a humanitarian crisis, caused by the regime, that has only been heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been further exacerbated by the regime’s unwillingness to release humanitarian assistance sent by Cubans in exile though churches to the some of its most needy citizens.

“We call for Liberty and Life for Cuba.”

Colombia Launches The Strategy “VISIT HOME, YOUR BEST DESTINATION”

0

MIAMI, Nov. 24, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — In order to reactivate international tourism in Colombia, ProColombia has launched “VISIT HOME, YOUR BEST DESTINATION,” which invites Colombians living abroad to return to their places of origin, take in the flavors and rhythms that trigger childhood memories, and also learn more about the destinations and experiences in Colombia that are part of their identity.

This campaign is part of a larger strategy to reactivate international tourism, which has four main objectives: to restore air, sea, and land connectivity; to provide tools to businesspeople; to promote and strengthen partnerships and synergies; and to carry out promotional activities in accordance with the reactivation phases.

This strategy is expected to encourage Colombians living abroad, including second and third generations, to travel within Colombia—and to invite their foreign friends, fellow students, and colleagues to visit the country as well.

The objective is for travelers to engage in several unique experiences in Colombia. These include exploring the country’s wildest side in the Serranía de Chiribiquete National Park, visiting one of Colombia’s four deserts, such as the Tatacoa Desert, enjoying rejuvenating urban landscapes in big cities such as Medellín, Cali, and Bogotá, and perhaps discovering earthly paradises like Minca, near Santa Marta.

“In our efforts to advance Colombia’s economic recovery, we must work hand in hand with Colombians living abroad, since they are the first group traveling to Colombia to reunite with their loved ones. Additionally, as the best ambassadors that Colombia can have abroad, we hope that this group will spread the word and invite others to enjoy everything that Colombia has to offer as a destination,” stated Flavia Santoro, president of ProColombia.

The first step will be a social media campaign that invites Colombians living abroad to travel in Colombia with the message: “VISIT HOME, YOUR BEST DESTINATION” using the #ColombiaTuMejorDestino hashtag.
