The National Domestic Violence Hotline Reaches Milestone With 5 Millionth Answered Call

0

AUSTIN, Texas, June 6, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — On May 8 at 4:32 p.m., a woman from California dialed The National Domestic Violence Hotline (The Hotline) seeking information about how to support her friend who was being abused. Although she didn’t know it, her call marked a bittersweet milestone for the organization. She became the five millionth reason advocates and staff at the national nonprofit work around the clock to end domestic violence and promote healthy relationships. Established in 1996, The Hotline is the only national 24-hour domestic violence hotline providing services via phone, online chat, and text. Its prevention project loveisrespect, established in 2007, engages, educates, and empowers young people to prevent and end abusive relationships.

Headquartered in Austin, Texas and serving nearly 1,000 people a day from across the country, the organization’s mission is to answer the call to support and shift power back to those affected by relationship abuse.

“We envision a world where all relationships are positive, healthy, and free from violence. Until that time, our highly trained, expert advocates will offer compassionate support, safety planning, crisis intervention information, educational services, and referral services to anyone affected by abuse,” says Katie Ray-Jones, chief executive officer, The Hotline. “I am extremely proud of our advocates and staff and commend them for being part of this incredible work and for empowering the strongest belief of all – that hope is possible.”

During June and July, The Hotline invites social media users to engage in the national campaign, 5 Million Reasons, to honor those who’ve taken the steps to end intimate partner violence and to reflect on the reasons why we should all care about the issue. Follow The Hotline on Facebook, on Twitter @ndvh, and on Instagram @ndvhofficial to join the conversation and to learn more about the issue experienced by 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men in their lifetime.  We’ll also post content on loveisrespect Facebook, on Twitter @loveisrespect, and on Instagram @loveisrespectofficial. We’re using the hashtag #5MillionReasons. Find out more about the campaign at www.thehotline.org.

Additionally, on June 17 at 3:30 p.m. CST, The Hotline will host a webinar titled, 5 Million Calls— What We’ve Learned. Jones and training team member, Kristen Thomas will host the 60-minute webinar and will share information on The National Domestic Violence Hotline’s history, approach to the rapid pace of domestic violence work, and trends we’ve noticed in our 24-years of providing services. Advance registration is required, please click HERE to register.  The webinar will be recorded and available online at TheHotline.org.

“When I first started with The Hotline in the mid-90’s, we were limited to providing support by phone only. Today, through advancements in technology and generous funding by donors we have the capability to meet the needs of more people through online chat and texting,” said Josie, advocate for The Hotline and loveisrespect. “Unfortunately, domestic violence continues. My commitment and dedication to the movement started when I first went into shelter with my little girls in 1978. I got the help I needed and today, I’m proud that I’m able to give back and make a difference in the lives of other survivors like me.”

Free and confidential phone, live chat, and texting services are available around the clock. Advocates provide support through online chat at loveisrespect.org and TheHotline.org, via text by sending loveis to 22522*, and by phone at 1-800-799-SAFE for The Hotline or 1-866-331-9474 for loveisrespect.

Pastor Carlos Luna And Casa De Dios File Suit Against Univision For Defamation

0

MIAMI, June 6, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Internationally renowned pastor, speaker and author, Pastor Cash Luna, and Casa de Dios have filed a defamation lawsuit in Florida state court in Miami-Dade County against Univision and related defendants.  Co-founded by Pastor Luna and his wife, Casa de Dios is an influential Christian church based in Guatemala and has one of the largest congregations in Latin America.

According to the Complaint:

Univision published false statements claiming that Pastor Luna was a close advisor to a convicted drug trafficker, accepted large sums of money from that person to build a new church for Casa de Dios, and engaged in money laundering.  All of these statements are 100% false and highly defamatory.

Univision’s report relied almost entirely on the false statements of an admitted drug smuggler named Jorge Mauricio Herrera Bernal who served time in jail after being charged with attempted murder and false imprisonment, before being deported to Colombia.  Bernal’s own criminal defense attorney stated in open court that Bernal was “delusional and paranoid” and a Florida judge entered a finding that Bernal appeared to be “not mentally competent.”  These facts were publicly known at the time that Univision was relying upon Bernal’s false statements in its report about Pastor Luna and Casa de Dios.

Pastor Luna’s and Casa de Dios’ attorney, Charles J. Harder, states: “Pastor Luna has always been a crusader for morality, ethics and altruism, and against corruption. Univision’s false story has done great damage to his credibility and ability to create positive change in Guatemala.  Pastor Luna and Casa de Dios will see this lawsuit through to the end, to ensure that truth prevails, and Univision is forced to meditate over its wrongful actions, and atone for them.”

A press conference will be held today at 11:30 A.M. EST at the Miami-Dade County Courthouse located at 73 W. Flagler Street in Miami, Florida.

A copy of the Complaint, with exhibits, can be found at www.harderllp.com/PastorLuna.

Cal/OSHA Reminds Employers to Protect Outdoor Workers from Heat Illness as Temperatures Rise Across the State

0
State of California Department of Industrial Relations

OAKLAND, June 5, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Cal/OSHA is reminding all employers to protect their outdoor workers from heat illness as temperatures rise throughout California. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for triple-digit temperatures today in Fresno, Kern, Kings and Tulare counties and forecasts high heat throughout inland parts of the state next week.

State of California Department of Industrial Relations

In addition to responding to workplace accidents and complaints of hazards, Cal/OSHA investigators conduct high heat inspections at outdoor worksites to ensure compliance with California’s heat illness prevention regulation and other workplace safety and health requirements.

Employers with outdoor workers must take the following steps to prevent heat illness:

  • Plan – Develop and implement an effective written heat illness prevention plan that includes emergency response procedures.
  • Training – Train all employees and supervisors on heat illness prevention.
  • Water – Provide drinking water that is fresh, pure, suitably cool and free of charge so that each worker can drink at least 1 quart per hour, and encourage workers to do so.
  • Shade – Provide shade when workers request it and when temperatures exceed 80 degrees. Encourage workers to take a cool-down rest in the shade for at least five minutes. They should not wait until they feel sick to cool down.

Cal/OSHA urges workers experiencing possible overheating to take a preventative cool-down rest in the shade until symptoms are gone. Workers who have existing health problems or medical conditions that reduce tolerance to heat, such as diabetes, need to be extra vigilant. Some high blood pressure and anti-inflammatory medications can also increase a worker’s risk for heat illness.

To prevent heat illness, it is crucial that supervisors are effectively trained on emergency procedures in case a worker gets sick. This helps ensure sick employees receive treatment immediately and that the symptoms do not develop into a serious illness or death.

Cal/OSHA’s Heat Illness Prevention special emphasis program, the first of its kind in the nation, includes enforcement of heat regulations as well as multilingual outreach and training programs for California’s employers and workers. Detail on heat illness prevention requirements and training materials are available online on Cal/OSHA’s Heat Illness Prevention web page and the 99calor.org informational site. A Heat Illness Prevention online tool is also available on Cal/OSHA’s website.

Cal/OSHA helps protect workers from health and safety hazards on the job in almost every workplace in California. Employers and workers who have questions or need assistance with workplace health and safety programs can call Cal/OSHA’s Consultation Services Branch at 800-963-9424.

Complaints about workplace safety and health hazards can be filed confidentially with Cal/OSHA district offices. Employees with work-related questions or complaints may contact DIR’s Call Center in English or Spanish at 844-LABOR-DIR (844-522-6734).

Members of the press may contact Erika Monterroza or Frank Polizzi at (510) 286-1161, and are encouraged to subscribe to get email alerts on DIR’s press releases or other departmental updates.

The California Department of Industrial Relations, established in 1927, protects and improves the health, safety, and economic well-being of over 18 million wage earners, and helps their employers comply with state labor laws. OAS Secretary General Almagro Receives AJC Champion of Democracy Award

0

WASHINGTON, June 5, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — American Jewish Committee (AJC) presented its Champion of Democracy Award to Luis Almagro, Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS), for exemplifying courageous and visionary leadership in fighting for democratic rule in the region and for combating anti-Semitism and terrorism.

“It is truly an honor to receive the AJC Champion of Democracy Award, which I accept on behalf of the millions that are victims today of hate, intolerance, and repression in the Americas,” said Almagro. “If there is genuine democracy in place, there is no place for evil to flourish.”

The award was presented by Mario Fleck, co-chair, and Dina Siegel Vann, director, of AJC’s Belfer Institute for Latino and Latin American Affairs (BILLA), during the closing plenary session of the AJC Global Forum.

The OAS head made two historic statements regarding anti-Semitism and international terrorism in the region in his remarks accepting the award.

Almagro declared that the OAS Secretariat endorses the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of anti-Semitism. The working definition offers a clear and comprehensive description of anti-Semitism in its various forms, including hatred and discrimination against Jews, Holocaust denial, and, of particular note, anti-Semitism as it relates to Israel.

“The OAS will work every day to accomplish a Hemisphere free of anti-Semitism, free of terrorism, free of dictatorships,” said Almagro. “We must do more to educate our people to have zero tolerance towards anti-Semitism.”

Strongly denouncing “Iran and Hezbollah, a terrorist organization, that have a solid base of operations in South America,” Almagro said, “The cowards that attack democracy and the values of human dignity it represents have found fertile ground to operate in Cuba and Venezuela. And because evil breeds evil, and evil attracts evil, Latin American dictators in the 21st century have partnered with terrorists and anti-Semitic actors and organizations.”

He recalled the July 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, the “worst terrorist act in the history of Argentina and the largest Jewish death toll from anti-Semitic terrorism outside Israel since World War II.” Both Iran and Hezbollah have been implicated in the bombing that left 85 dead and hundreds wounded.

“History has been made here today at the AJC Global Forum,” said AJC CEO David Harris, who spontaneously joined Almagro on the stage after he concluded his remarks. “Secretary-General Luis Almagro is the first Latin American leader to adopt the working definition of anti-Semitism,” said Harris.

Moreover, Harris continued, “I’ve never heard in my 30 years of advocacy with Latin America such a clear denunciation of Iran and Hezbollah. Again, history has been made. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to our dear friend, Luis Almagro.”

AJC is “an essential partner of the OAS,” said Almagro, noting that AJC was granted NGO status by the OAS in 2005. “You can count on our multilateral political platform to fight hatred, to educate, to increase awareness, and to help Member States adopt measures and cooperate to fight anti-Semitism and terrorism.”

Almagro has been a close friend of AJC since he served as Foreign Minister of Uruguay, 2010-2015. He especially travelled to Mexico, shortly after he was inaugurated in May 2015 as OAS Secretary General, to address AJC’s Belfer Center for Latino and Latin American Affairs (BILLA) 10th anniversary celebration in Mexico.

The AJC Global Forum, taking place June 2-4 in Washington, D.C., is the advocacy organization’s signature annual event, bringing together nearly 2,500 civic, political, and Jewish leaders from across the United States and 50 countries around the world.

March of Dimes To Honor Olympian Allyson Felix At Get S.E.T. Los Angeles

March of Dimes Foundation Logo (PRNewsfoto/March of Dimes Foundation)

LOS ANGELES, June 5, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Six-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix, will be honored during the inaugural Get S.E.T. Los Angeles event on Thursday, June 27th. The event will benefit March of Dimes, the non-profit leader in the fight for the health of all moms and babies. Allyson will be one of five honorees being celebrated for their outstanding achievements and contributions in the sports, entertainment and technology fields, which also includes Marcellus Wiley, cohost of FOX Sports 1 and former NFL player, Kevin LeGrett, President, West Division iHeartmedia, Don Olender, technology disruptor and Executive Director of Innovate@UCLA and Rajan Mehta, Executive Vice President, Chief Product & Technology Officer of the WWE. CBS2’s Jim Hill, former NFL player and one of the nation’s most respected sports anchors, will emcee this incredible evening to be held at The NOVO at L.A. Live for the unique and immerse event.

March of Dimes Foundation Logo (PRNewsfoto/March of Dimes Foundation)

“We’re launching an event that celebrates great achievement in sports, entertainment and technology, brings the Los Angeles business community together in a new way, and, most importantly, raises awareness and funds to support the March of Dimes and the fight for healthy moms and babies,” says Jeffrey Pollack, Co-Chair of Get S.E.T. Los Angeles and President of the XFL.

“It’s shocking and disgraceful that America is now the most dangerous developed country in which to give birth,” says Michael Roth, co-chair of the Get S.E.T. Los Angeles and Vice President Communications, AEG. “It does not have to be this way. Thanks to the incredible work done every single day by the March of Dimes and the wonderful support we are receiving from our event sponsors, we are sending a strong message that we all want to live in a world in which healthy moms and strong babies are a priority. I am particularly grateful that March of Dimes is working to see that day and funds raised at this event will go towards making that vision a reality.”

In California, as in many other states, maternal and infant health disparities between the African American community and other communities are significant. The preterm birth rate for black women in the state is 44 percent higher than the rate among all other women and 55 percent higher than white women.  Women of color are most at risk of facing pregnancy complications, and black women are more than three times as likely as white women to die from pregnancy-related causes. And many women don’t know they are at risk.

“I am delighted to be an honoree and support March of Dimes and their important work for moms and babies,” says Allyson Felix. “Being a knowledgeable, world-class athlete didn’t protect me from the odds.  I’d been doing everything right throughout my whole pregnancy, but still, when I was 32 weeks into my pregnancy, my blood pressure became way too high and the baby’s heart rate was decelerating and I had to deliver via emergency C-section. Thankfully I had all the right resources, but I know not everyone does. March of Dimes supports moms through every stage of the pregnancy journey, even when everything doesn’t go according to plan.”

“I have been blessed with three healthy children,” says Marcellus Wiley. “I am honored to be part of Get S.E.T. Los Angeles and help support March of Dimes as they lead the fight on all fronts – through advocacy, education, research and collaborative initiatives nationally, in the state and right here in Los Angeles — to close the unacceptable health equity gaps that exist for moms and babies of color.”

“March of Dimes is a great organization that has done so much over the years to improve the lives of babies and their mothers,” says Kevin LeGrett President, West Division iHeartmedia. “I am thrilled to be an honoree and support their mission.”

“Tackling the biggest health threats facing moms and babies is no easy task and will require everyone’s help to disrupt the status quo and make change,” says Don Olender, Executive Director of Innovate@UCLA. “I am proud to support March of Dimes and I am inspired to be one of the Get S.E.T. Los Angeles honorees.”

Attendees of Get S.E.T. Los Angeles will get exclusive entrée to an exceptional evening on Thursday, June 27 at 6:00 p.m. at The NOVO, L.A. Live, 800 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90015. The event features unforgettable interactive displays and activations and intimate access to world-class entertainment. This is not your traditional fundraising gala! Tickets are only $250 each and are on sale at marchofdimes.org/getsetla.
