Olympusat Restored Classic Screened at Salon Mexico: The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema

Masterfully directed by Emilio Fernández, who won the 1946 Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix award for Maria Candelaria, and flawlessly photographed like a classic film noir by Gabriel Figueroa, Víctimas del pecado (1951) is a sparkling example of the rumberas genre of films popular at the time—typically set in a cabaret and featuring Afro-Caribbean music. Ninón Sevilla delivers a kinetic performance as Violeta, a rhumba dancer at a red-light district nightclub in Mexico City who finds an infant in a garbage can and decides to raise him as her own. But when club owner Rodolfo (Rodolfo Acosta) learns about the child, a clash between him, Violeta and her lover Santiago (Tito Junco) ensues, ultimately ending in tragedy for all three.

Salon Mexico: The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema pays homage to the three and a half decades of prolific film production by what many consider to be the epicenter of Latin American cinema between 1933 and 1964. It was during this time that the Mexican industry gained international recognition based on the quality of its cinematic offering as well as the speed at which it could deliver reels of film to theater. Celluloid, when not properly stored, deteriorates due to environmental conditions and will rust, fade and ultimately disintegrate. Thankfully, Olympusat is fighting to preserve these historical works as quickly as possible by painstakingly restoring them frame by frame to their original splendor. Olympusat has over fifty professionals dedicated to fixing and preserving the catalog of classic Mexican cinema. To date, the company has restored and digitally transferred over 300 films for posterity to enjoy.

Meyer Shank Racing Takes Acura NSX GT3 Evo to Victory at Watkins Glen

Trent Hindman, Mario Farnbacher and Justin Marks combined to take their MSR Acura NSX GT3 Evo to victory today at Watkins Glen International Raceway.

WATKINS GLEN, New York, June 30, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Acura Motorsports continued its run of mid-season wins and podiums today at Watkins Glen International Raceway, with Meyer Shank Racing taking its Acura NSX GT3 Evo to the GTD class win in the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen, while Acura Team Penske added another podium finish with a third-place overall result for the Acura ARX-05 prototype.

Starting from the GTD class pole, Trent Hindman and co-drivers Mario Farnbacher and Justin Marks remained in the thick of the GTD battle throughout the six-hour contest. During the final round of pit stops, the MSR team elected to have Mario “double-stint” his tires to the finish. The move enabled Farnbacher to beat most of his competitors out of the pits for the final time, but he would have to fight competitors with fresher, quicker tires under them for the final 40 minutes of the race.

Farnbacher was successful in his defense of the lead, and scored his first IMSA GTD win of 2019 and second career win. For regular co-driver Hindman, this was his first GTD win, to go with two poles, increased their lead in the drivers’ championship to an unofficial 16 points over Townsend Bell and Frank Montecalvo. For endurance racing specialist Marks, today’s win is the ninth in his long career, dating back to 2001.

In the second MSR Acura, Christina Nielsen and co-drivers Katherine Legge and Bia Figueiredo led the GTD class multiple times, and remained in contention for the class win through the final pit stop. Electing to install two new tires for the final run to the checkers, Legge was able to move from eighth to fifth.

In prototype, the final laps boiled down to a fight for the win featuring Juan Pablo Montoya’s Acura ARX-05 and the Mazda Team Joest trio of Jonathan Bomarito, Oliver Pla and Harry Tincknell.

As in GTD, today’s prototype endurance contest at Watkins Glen came down to the final 40 minutes, with Montoya taking a “short fill” – less than a full fuel load – to gain the lead with just over one hour remaining. After a frequent side-by-side battle for several laps, Tincknell executed a forceful pass on Montoya and extended his lead through the final laps to the checkers. However, Montoya and regular co-driver Dane Cameron remained in the thick of the championship after six of 10 races by virtue of their third consecutive finish on the podium.

Driving the #7 sister ARX-05, starting driver Ricky Taylor and co-driver Helio Castroneves started and finished fifth, results that belied the intensity of the contest at the front of the prototype field throughout the race.

Meyer Shank Racing Locks Out Front Row for Acura in Qualifying at Watkins Glen

Trent Hindman led the Acura qualifying effort at Watkins Glen International Raceway on Saturday, and will start first in the GTD category for Sunday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.

WATKINS GLEN, New York, June 30, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Trent Hindman and Christina Nielsen led the Acura qualifying effort at Watkins Glen International Raceway on Saturday, and will start first and second, respectively, in the GTD category for Sunday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.

Hindman throttled his Meyer Shank Racing #86 Acura NSX GT3 to the pole position for Sunday’s endurance event, and shortly thereafter, Nielsen claimed the front-row spot alongside him in her #57 Caterpillar-sponsored NSX GT3, which Meyer Shank runs in tandem with Heinricher Racing.

The Acura Team Penske ARX-05 prototype entries will start second and third in the DPi category. Dane Cameron qualified second to the Mazda driven by Oliver Jarvis, while Ricky Taylor took the sister ARX-05 to third.

Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo
Hindman recorded his second pole position of the 2019 season, following an earlier pole at Sebring in March. His average speed of 116.595 miles per hour led the 16 GTD entries in the field. Hindman will team with Mario Farnbacher and Justin Marks in Sunday’s six-hour test over the 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International Circuit.

Nielsen took her NSX GT3 to the second qualifying spot at an average of 116.244 miles per hour. She teams with Katherine Legge and Bia Figueiredo in this afternoon’s fifth round of the championship. Legge and Andy Lally co-drove to the GTD victory here in 2017, the first year for the current NSX GT3 program.

Hindman and Farnbacher came into the weekend with 84 points to lead the 2019 IMSA GTD drivers’ championship.

Acura Team Penske ARX-05
Cameron led most of the qualifying session in his ARX-05, and ended up missing the pole by just over two-tenths of a second to Jarvis, at an average speed of 136.208 mph. He and co-driver Juan Pablo Montoya will put a two-race winning streak on the line Sunday, following victories at Mid-Ohio in May and at Detroit earlier this month. Cameron and Montoya entered the weekend ranked second in the drivers’ championship.

Taylor was just six-hundredths of a second further back of Cameron, qualifying third at 136.108 mph. He’ll be teamed with Helio Castroneves when the green flag falls at 9:45 a.m. EDT on Sunday morning. Taylor and Castroneves rank third in the drivers’ standings, a single point behind Cameron and Montoya.

New Data Released on Fireworks-Related Injuries and Deaths

WASHINGTON, July 1, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Family, fun, food and fireworks. It’s that time of year when many will be celebrating the Fourth of July holiday. All too often, however, celebrations can end with a trip to the hospital if fireworks are mishandled. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) wants to make sure consumers know the risks, so that they can prevent the tragedies. At a fireworks safety press conference and demonstration on the National Mall, CPSC announced that at least five fireworks-related deaths were reported in 2018—all associated with reloadable aerial devices.

“CPSC works year-round to help prevent deaths and injuries from fireworks, by verifying fireworks meet safety regulations in our ports, marketplace and on the road,” said Ann Marie Buerkle, CPSC Acting Chairman. “Beyond CPSC’s efforts, we want to make sure everyone takes simple safety steps to celebrate safely with their family and friends.”

Injuries:
There were an estimated 9,100 fireworks-related, emergency department-treated injuries in 2018, with 62 percent of them occurring during the month surrounding the Fourth of July (June 22-July 22). During that period, firecrackers were the number one cause of injuries, accounting for 19 percent of the estimated injuries. For children under 5 years of age, sparklers accounted for more than half of the total estimated injuries.

Deaths:
Since 2018 reporting is not yet complete, the five fireworks-related deaths should be considered a minimum. The victims range in age from 16 to 49. In one of the reported cases, an 18-year-old launched a mortar shell from a tube on the top of his head. The ignited shell did not launch and exploded. The victim died in the hospital the next day. CPSC staff has reports of 121 fireworks-related deaths between 2003 and 2018.
