SAN MATEO, Calif., Jan. 23, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The San Mateo County Event Center and Fair is proud to announce that it has won the prestigious Western Fairs Association Merrill Award for its 2022 Farmworker Heroes Appreciation Day at the Fair. The Merrill Award, named in honor of Western Fairs Association Founder Louis Merrill, and is awarded to Fair programs that clearly demonstrate innovation, vision, and excellence. It is the highest honor that a Fair can receive.

The San Mateo County Fair team is committed to inclusion and diversity Recognizing how hard Farmworkers in our community and throughout the U.S work to provide food, often during extreme conditions including severe weather, fires, and during the pandemic, and who too often go unrecognized. The Fair staff created an educational and recognition program celebrating their hard work, and the legacy of Cesar Chavez, Larry Itliong and Dolores Huerta. A curated exhibit in partnership with the National Chavez Center, Cesar Chavez Foundation and local non-profit association, ALAS (Ayundando Latinos A Soñar) was established with over 100 photographs.

Additional educational content was developed to share and celebrate the enormous contributions of Farmworkers, and Cesar Chavez

An exciting aspect of this curated exhibit is that it will be shared with schools and other county fairs throughout California as a traveling educational exhibit; amplifying the messaging of what our Farmworkers do and how important they are.

The San Mateo County Fair is proud to have had the opportunity to recognize our Farmworkers and their essential contributions to our daily lives. “It has been a privilege to recognize the hard work and dedication of our Farmworkers,” said Dana Stoehr, CEO of the San Mateo County Event Center & Fair. “This award is a testament to our Farmworkers, the legacy of Cesar Chavez, our team and the San Mateo County community.”

The Farmworker Heroes Appreciation Day was a huge success, educating tens of thousands of visitors to the fair on how important our Farmworkers are and acknowledge and celebrate their hard work. We are thrilled to have received this recognition and will continue to showcase and celebrate the contributions of Farmworkers in our community.

We want to thank the Western Fairs Association for recognizing our efforts, and we look forward to continuing our work toward hosting a fair that is inclusive and celebrates the diversity of San Mateo County.

“Farmworker Heroes Day is more than just a one-time event,” added Justin Aquino, Fair Operations Manager at the San Mateo County Event Center & Fair. “It is an educational exhibit designed to educate our public and acknowledge and celebrate individuals who keep our food system running.”

We invite everyone to join us in celebrating Farmworker Heroes Day and recognizing the invaluable contributions of Farmworkers at the San Mateo County Fair, June 3-11, 2023. More information about the event, including a schedule of activities, will be available on our website closer to the event start date.

PD GENEration: Mapping the Future of Parkinson’s Returns Value to Participants, Physicians and Broader Research Community

NEW YORK and MIAMI, Jan. 24, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Parkinson’s Foundation has reached a significant milestone with the recruitment, genetic testing and counseling of 7,500 participants in its international study, PD GENEration: Mapping the Future of Parkinson’s Disease. Currently at 50% of its recruitment goal of 15,000, the study includes 36 participant sites, over 50 referral sites and has expanded to Canada – while still offering home testing – as part of the Foundation’s commitment to increasing access to Parkinson’s disease (PD) research.

Parkinson’s Foundation Global Genetics Study Milestones Infographic

PD GENEration tests for clinically relevant genes with the goal of improving PD care by accelerating research to advance improved treatments. The study helps people with PD and their physicians identify whether they qualify for enrollment in clinical trials. Currently, investigators have found that 14% of participants have a genetic form of PD – a significant observation compared to the long-standing estimate of 10%.

“Ensuring that the entire Parkinson’s community – including the 90,000 individuals expected to receive a PD diagnosis this year – has access to their genetic status is as critical as ever,” said James Beck, PhD, chief scientific officer for the Parkinson’s Foundation. “Every PD GENEration participant plays a part not only in their own personal discovery but also in feeding results to researchers which will advance future research.”

To fully understand how PD affects individuals of diverse backgrounds, representation of the broader PD community in research is critical. Through PD GENEration, the Foundation works to increase diversity in research and aims to make no-cost genetic testing accessible to every person with PD. Participants are enrolled from all 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic; and, so far, 22% of participants represent historically marginalized racial and ethnic groups.

The study continues to expand its reach with the addition of testing sites and collaborations with clinicians in historically excluded communities. The Foundation extensively engages Hispanics and Latinos and provides genetic counseling in English and Spanish, a first-of-its-kind for a study of this scale. Roughly 11% of participants identify as Hispanic, and investigators found that 17% of these individuals have a genetic link to PD – the highest rate of any ethnic group thus far.

“Through the expansion of the PD GENEration study to more populations, we are bringing diversity to genetics data,” said Carlos Singer, MD, professor of neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “In turn, this will accelerate the pace of research to help all people with Parkinson’s, regardless of where they live.”

The study’s data are analyzed in real-time by the Parkinson’s Disease Gene Curation Expert Panel (GCEP), the first-ever genetics working group focused on neurodegenerative diseases formed by the Foundation within the NIH-funded Clinical Genome (ClinGen) Resources. The study is conducted in partnership with the Parkinson Study Group under the leadership of Michael Schwarzschild, MD, PhD, and Hubert Fernandez, MD.

First-Ever Dating-App Led Research Study of Hispanics in College Reveals Concerns on Inflation, Direction of Country; Shows Ever Growing Impact of Online Dating

0
67% of Hispanic Gen Z students say their parents expectations will not hold them back in a new study from Latinx dating app, Chispa.

Study reveals 75% of college-aged single Latines are more careful how they are spending their money and 66% of respondents are worried they might not have access to reproductive services in the future.

DALLAS, Jan. 24, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Chispa, the #1 dating app made for US Latinx, released the results of its first-ever study of Hispanics in college, conducted in Q3 and Q4 2022 in partnership with Dr. Jake Beniflah, the founder of The Center for Multicultural Science, a non-partisan think tank focused on multicultural marketing. From the impacts of inflation on dating to reproductive rights, this study highlights the issues that affect Hispanic Gen Zs and gives a look towards the future by the Latine community.

New Latinx in College study from Chispa reveals that 72% of Hispanic Gen Z students have met someone online.

For over 10 years, Match Group has conducted Singles In America, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive annual scientific study on single adults. Part of the Match Group family of brands, Chispa has, for the first time ever, taken a deep look at the Latin Gen Z population, with a specific emphasis on college-aged singles because of their rapid growth and impact on cultural trends. Latinos make up a growing share of all students enrolled at postsecondary institutions. In 1980, Latinos accounted for just 4% of enrollment; by 2020, Latinos accounted for one-fifth of all postsecondary students. College enrollment rates for Hispanics 18-24 grew from 34% to 36% between 2010 and 2020, being the only race/ethnic cohort that experienced growth during this period. While total enrollment rates decreased, enrollment rates for both Hispanic male and females increased. More than 400 Hispanics in college — some actively dating and some not — were asked about their views on the issues of the day.

“With the Latinx in College study, we are giving visibility to a whole new generation of US Latines who are challenging a variety of preconceived notions related to this community,” said Julia Estacolchic, Sr. Director, Brand Marketing for Chispa. “Hispanic Gen Zs are leading the way, reinventing the Latine community in response to the rapid changes taking place in US society. We are confident Latinx in College will grow to become a knowledge center and catalyst, relevant not only to the Hispanic segment but to the larger community.”

Top research findings include:

Inflation and the impact on Gen Z dating and spending: Latinx college students are feeling the weight of rising costs, with mental health and inflation being the top sources of stress for Hispanic Gen Z college students, followed by jobs and careers, education, debt, and relationships. 75% of respondents said they are now more careful in how they spend their money. 69% stated that they are now cooking dinners more often at home. More than half of all Hispanic Gen Z college students have postponed going on a vacation and almost half have postponed purchasing or leasing a car.

Direction of country and uncertainty about the future: Only one in two Hispanic Gen Z college students believe that their future will be better than their parents’. 72% of Hispanic Gen Zs are unsure about the direction of the country, and 68% of female respondents feel the country is regressing back to the 1950s due to the recent repeal of Roe v. Wade.

Advocacy and reproductive rights: As a result of the repeal of Roe v. Wade, 35% of dating-app users say they are having less casual sex and roughly one in four Hispanic Gen Z say they changed their methods of contraception.  Interestingly, more than 75% of Hispanic Gen Z female college students say they would consider working for a company that supports women’s freedoms over one that does not, while 66% are worried that they may not have access to reproductive services in the future.

Dating-apps >Match Made at Church: 72% of Hispanic Gen Z college students have met someone online while Hispanic Gen Z female college students are more than three times more likely to meet a partner online than at church.

Rejecting cultural stereotypes and embracing progressive values: 74% of Hispanic Gen Z students believe that marriage should not be exclusively between a man and a woman. 81% of Hispanic Gen Z female college students do not believe they should wait to have sex until they are married, while approximately 1 in 3 Hispanic Gen Z students would consider dating someone who identifies as gender neutral or non-binary.

“The Latinx in College study serves as a window into the lives of US Latine college students, uncovering key insights that impact one of the fastest-growing segments of the population,” said Dr. Jake Beniflah, Executive Director of The Center for Multicultural Science. “One of the most interesting findings is the extent to which Gen Z Hispanics are socially progressive and willing to challenge traditional values and norms. This will impact the way brands have traditionally viewed this cohort moving forward.”

FAU Poll: Easing of Inflation Pressure Bolsters U.S. Hispanics’ Confidence in U.S. Economy

The Business and Economics Polling Initiative (BEPI) at Florida Atlantic University conducts surveys on business, economic, political, and social issues with main focus on Hispanic attitudes and opinions at regional, state and national levels.

BOCA RATON, Fla., Jan. 24, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — With consumer price hikes moderating, U.S. Hispanics are feeling more optimistic about their personal finances and the economy, according to a new poll from the Florida Atlantic University Business and Economics Polling Initiative (FAU BEPI).

The Business and Economics Polling Initiative (BEPI) at Florida Atlantic University conducts surveys on business, economic, political, and social issues with main focus on Hispanic attitudes and opinions at regional, state and national levels.

The Hispanic Consumer Sentiment Index rose to 85.3 in the fourth quarter from 74.3 in the third quarter and is only one point lower than a year ago.

In the fourth quarter, 56 percent of the 466 respondents said they are better off financially than a year ago, up from 44 percent in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, 72 percent of Hispanics said they expect to be better off financially in the next year, compared with 66 percent in the third quarter.

As for the short-term economic outlook, 56 percent of respondents said they expect the country to experience good business conditions in the next year, up from 44 percent in the third quarter.

“This level of optimism is due to higher incomes and the gradual easing of inflation,” said Monica Escaleras, Ph.D., director of FAU BEPI in the College of Business.

Inflation fell to 6.5 percent in December compared with a year ago, according to U.S. government figures. It was the sixth consecutive month of annual decreases.

Airline fares fell 28.5 percent from the previous year, while over the same period car repairs dropped 19.5 percent and delivery services fell 13.3 percent. Economists now hope government officials will be less inclined to take dramatic steps to control inflation.

Regarding Hispanics’ long-term economic outlook, 53 percent said they expect the country to experience good business conditions over the next five years. That was unchanged from the third quarter.

Hispanics also are becoming more optimistic about buying a big-ticket items, with 45 percent saying it’s a good time to do so, compared with 40 percent in the third quarter. Despite higher mortgage rates, 37 percent said it’s a good time to buy a house, up from 26 percent in the third quarter.

The poll is based on a sampling of Hispanic adults from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2022. The margin of error is +/- 3.54 percentage points. The polling results and full cross-tabulations can be viewed here.

FORMER HOUSE REPUBLICAN MAYRA FLORES JOINS AMERICANO MEDIA

Former Texas Republican Congresswoman Mayra Flores has joined Americano Media as its Senior Political Contributor.

MIAMI, Jan. 23, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Americano Media, the nation’s first ever Spanish language network rooted in American values, announced today that former Texas Republican Congresswoman Mayra Flores has joined the network as its Senior Political Contributor. She will provide commentary daily on Americano’s news and opinion programs.

Former Texas Republican Congresswoman Mayra Flores has joined Americano Media as its Senior Political Contributor.

“Rep. Flores surprised the country when she won handily in a traditionally Democrat district, and then brought to Washington her unique and smart perspective on how to save our declining nation,” Americano founder and chief executive Ivan Garcia-Hidalgo said. “She is now a leading voice of Hispanic Americans who are fed up with business as usual and we are delighted to give her a nationwide platform to continue her leadership.”

“I am proud to join Americano Media, a truly important new development in the Spanish language media arena,” Rep. Flores said. “Hispanics are family-oriented, hardworking and conservative by nature, and I am excited to amplify their views in a more fulsome discussion where both sides are heard on issues important to our community.”

Americano Media airs 18 hours of original news and opinion programming every weekday. The company syndicates its content with Audacy’s Radio Libre 790AM in Miami, and is positioned to announce in 2023 dozens of new radio station partners in vital markets across the country. New TV and digital news and talk content will also be rolled out in the first quarter of 2023.

Flores represented Texas’s 34th district in the U.S. House of Representatives after a stunning upset win in a June 2022 special election. A Republican, she was the first Mexican-born female member of the House. The district was then reconfigured to make it strongly favor a Democrat candidate, which resulted in her defeat in the recent midterm elections.

Flores campaigned on her story as the wife of a U.S. Border Patrol agent and as a Mexican immigrant whose parents brought her to the United States as a young child. She has said the Rio Grande Valley, her home, is “under attack” at the border and speaks out against business-as-usual in the nation’s capital.

“Mayra’s story is America’s story, and in many ways she’s also Americano’s story, so you can imagine how exciting this is for our company,” Garcia-Hidalgo said.

(OTC QB: BNET), a leader in the development of livestock waste treatment technology and premium sustainable beef, announced today that it has signed a letter of intent with BetterFedFoods, LLC, of Wamego, Kansas, to create a mutually beneficial strategic relationship between the companies.

BetterFedFoods (and its affiliate companies, NBO3 Technologies and H3 Enterprises) have made a significant equity investment in Bion.  The companies will work together over the next 60 to 90 days to determine how to best leverage their individual strengths.

For the last decade, BetterFedFoods and NBO3 Technologies have developed animal health & welfare solutions associated with incorporating algae into livestock feeding systems.  Their patented technology delivers Omega 3 EPA long chain fatty acids to the animal through its feed.  Based on extensive academic research sponsored by BetterFedFoods, their product improves overall animal health and provides a higher feed-to-weight gain ratio and a higher carcass value due to better marbling, while reducing enteric methane emissions of livestock, along with other Climate Smart impacts. Moreover, balancing the animals Omega 6:3 ratio improves animal health by reducing joint inflammation, increasing stress tolerance, improving respiratory issues, and reducing heart disease – as it does for humans.

In recent years, BetterFedFoods has expanded its Climate-Smart Premiums Program focus to growing another strain of algae that enhances plant photosynthesis and increases microbial activity in the soil, both of which lead to healthier and higher yielding feed crops.

Todd Hansen, BetterFedFoods’ CEO, stated that “Bion and BetterFedFoods share a commitment to create premium sustainable beef that is better for the consumer. Aligning our goals makes perfect sense. We are excited to work together to maximize animal health and performance in Bion’s cattle feeding operations, as well as enhance the quality and health of the incoming animals.”

Bill O’Neill, Bion’s CEO, said “Animal health and welfare is important to Bion and our feeder partners. BetterFedFoods’ commitment to creating healthier feed, animals, and people is a perfect fit with our own vision. Today’s consumers increasingly want products that are sustainable, transparent, and ‘better for you’.  Working with BetterFedFoods will help Bion and its partners check those consumer boxes.”
