New Survey: America’s Families are Rethinking K-12 Education as 53.7% of Parents Search for New Schools

Black, Hispanic, and young millennial parents are leading a post-COVID realignment of K–12 education

MIAMI, Jan. 17, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — America’s K­–12 education system is experiencing a once-in-a-generation realignment that is powered by increased demand for school choice among Black, Hispanic, and young millennial parents, according to survey results released today by the nonprofit National School Choice Awareness Foundation (NSCAF).

According to the survey, 53.7 percent of parents considered new schools for their children over the past year, or are currently considering making a change­­. Black parents (64.5 percent), Hispanic parents (64.6 percent), and parents aged 18-29 (63.3 percent) were most likely to consider new schools for their children.

Parents who explored new education options were primarily motivated by a desire to find a better educational fit for their child and not out of widespread dissatisfaction with their children’s schools, the survey indicated. In fact, 67.9 percent of all parents expressed satisfaction with their children’s schools.

Post-COVID, however, parents are increasingly worried about their children’s academic progress, and 86.1 percent of parents said they were at least slightly concerned about their children’s learning. More than one third of parents (37.9 percent) said they accessed in-person or online tutoring for their children last year, as well.

Parent demand for school choice options is unlikely to decline in the coming years. Nearly two thirds of parents surveyed (64.7 percent) said they wish they had more information about the schooling options available for their children––with demand for information strongest among Black (71.2 percent), Hispanic (75.7 percent) and young millennial parents.

STOCKTON, Calif., Jan. 13, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — On the afternoon of February 22, 2022, following a minor traffic accident with an unidentified Stockton Police Department officer, Ms. Gaeta was pursued to an isolated, rural area of Stockton, California, where there were no witnesses to the tragic events that unfolded. Tracy Gaeta drew her last breath at the dead end of Rolerson Road, where in a matter of seconds, Ms. Gaeta was killed by an officer of the Stockton Police Department who fired thirty-three (33) bullets into her car in what the lawsuit alleges was a spectacular display of excessive force and reckless disregard for human life and malicious conduct.

Today, the children of Tracy Gaeta, a 54-year-old grandmother who was killed by a Stockton, CA police officer, filed suit in US District Court, Eastern District.

Home shoppers who can overcome affordability hurdles will find a more comfortable market this year, with more time to consider options and less chance of a bidding war, even if they’re shopping in one of the hottest markets.”

Unlike in recent years, fast-growing home values are not a requirement for making this year’s list of hottest markets. Higher mortgage rates and severe affordability challenges have chilled demand and brought home values down from last summer’s peak. Home value growth in Charlotte is expected to be much slower this year than its 11.8% pace of 2022, as is the case in all of Zillow’s 2023 hottest markets and the U.S. as a whole.

Charlotte ranks second among large markets in projections for both home value growth and growth in owner-occupied households, which helped shoot it to the top of this year’s hottest markets list. Both Cleveland and Pittsburgh ranked high in projections for time on market and new jobs per new home built.

There are only four holdovers from last year’s top 10, an indicator of how much the housing market has changed in just one year. Last year’s hottest market, Tampa, just missed the cut this year, coming in at 11. Austin, 2021’s hottest market, has fallen all the way to 29th on the list, in large part because it now ranks among the country’s most expensive large markets. San Jose, Sacramento, Minneapolis–St. Paul, Denver and San Francisco make up the five coolest large markets in Zillow’s 2023 projections.

While affordability remains a major hurdle, the good news for home buyers is that the cost of a typical mortgage fell in November, thanks to lower mortgage rates. Zillow economists expect affordability to stabilize in 2023, if not improve, making it easier for households to budget and plan for their housing decisions. For those able to buy now, less competition from other buyers means homes are staying on the market longer, many sellers are cutting their list price, and there is less chance of being caught in a bidding war.

Methodology

Zillow analyzed the 50 largest U.S. metro areas to forecast the hottest, or most competitive, housing markets of 2023. Seven metro areas were excluded due to missing data. The analysis incorporates expected home value appreciation from December 2022 through November 2023, the anticipated change in home value appreciation from 2022, new jobs per new housing unit permitted, an estimate of the net new number of home-owning households based on current demographic trends and the speed at which homes are being sold.

Newly updated program empowers Meijer customers with personalized rewards and increased value

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Jan. 12, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Building on the success of the retailer’s popular digital coupon and rewards program, Meijer announced today that it is revamping mPerks to make it even easier for customers to save on the products they need and want.

The enhanced mPerks program will allow for more personalized rewards and savings, with customers now earning points for every dollar spent* and every qualifying prescription filled, along with additional opportunities to earn even more points.

Customers in Southeast Michigan will begin transitioning to the new mPerks program first on Jan. 16, while the retailer’s other Midwest markets will roll over to the new program in phases throughout January and February.

Meijer has millions of total mPerks users. In the first half of 2022, mPerks customers saved more than $100 million on their purchases.

Changes customers will notice include:

  • Purchases now earn points, which customers can apply toward the savings of their choice
  • Each qualifying prescription filled now earns points, instead of every five prescriptions filled
  • Points expire after 90 days, as opposed to 45 days in current system
  • Customers choose when and how they want to redeem points for additional savings

Customers’ existing unclaimed rewards will automatically transition to the new program with the same value. Any in-progress rewards, as well as existing pharmacy credits, will be transferred to the new program as points.
