Frito-Lay Transforms California Facility into Showcase for Sustainability

Modesto Site Fleet Operations’ Greenhouse Gas Emissions Cut by More than 90 Percent Thanks to Zero- and Near Zero-Emission Technologies

MODESTO, Calif., Jan. 18, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Frito-Lay, a leading food manufacturer and division of PepsiCo, today announced the near completion of its Modesto, California, facility’s transformation into a first-of-its-kind showcase for sustainable manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution technologies. The project was started in 2019 and supported by the California Climate Investments (CCI) initiative, in conjunction with the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District (SJVAPCD) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), to demonstrate the sustainability benefits of zero-emission (ZE) and near zero-emission (NZE) technologies.

Frito-Lay logo

The Frito-Lay Modesto site is one of the largest Frito-Lay manufacturing facilities in the United States at 500,000 square feet, sitting on 80 acres and employing more than 1,100 associates. The facility is the first Frito-Lay manufacturing facility to implement site-wide alternative fuel vehicles, on-site renewable energy generation, energy storage equipment and employee electric vehicle charging stations.

“At Frito-Lay and PepsiCo, we are dedicated to operating within our planetary bounds and inspiring positive change. The transformation at Modesto is in direct support of our PepsiCo Positive (pep+) commitment to building a circular and inclusive value chain and achieving net zero emissions by 2040,” said Steven Williams, CEO of PepsiCo Foods North America. “To date, the Frito-Lay Modesto transformation has resulted in a 91 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from direct fleet operations, or 5,250 metric tons of GHG emissions. If the standard 4-person compact SUV drives on average 15,000 miles per year with an average MPG of 25.5, this reduction is the equivalent of removing just over 1,000 standard compact SUVs from the road.”

Now near completion, the transformation at Modesto is a template for and can help accelerate the continued proliferation of large-scale commercialization of ZE and NZE technologies at freight facilities and warehouses, magnifying emissions reduction benefits on a broad scale.

The upgrades in Modesto employ the latest in sustainable technology to reduce environmental impact, while also offering employees on-the-job training to maintain and operate the new high-tech equipment. These updates include the replacement of diesel fleet assets with ZE and NZE alternatives, fueling and charging infrastructure for the new fleet, and on-site renewable energy generation and storage. These technology upgrades are another step in achieving our pep+ goals:

  • Three BYD 8Y electric yard tractors improve operations efficiency, and the associated tailpipe emission reductions contribute to our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our value chain. Each yard tractor operates 20 hours per day and moves more than 150 trailers while only charging for two hours every day.
  • 1-megawatt solar carport with energy storage, which doubles the amount of solar generation capacity at the facility by supplementing the site’s 1-megawatt of rooftop solar panels.
  • 12 Crown Li-ion forklifts powered by lithium-ion batteries to improve energy and time efficiency.
  • 2.7 megawatt-hours of on-site battery storage to help reduce the site’s electricity costs and support grid capacity by reducing the facility’s electricity load on the grid during peak times.
  • Electric Tesla over the road semis and four Tesla 750kW charging stations to provide the semis with up to 400 miles of range in 1 hour of charging. PepsiCo and Frito-Lay are now the first company to have a commercial fleet featuring the electric semi.
  • 38 Volvo VNL compressed natural gas (CNG) tractors fueled by CNG with RNG attributes from a nearby, public access CNG fueling station owned and operated by Beyond6.
  • Six Peterbilt 220EV electric box trucks that provide zero emission last mile delivery into the Modesto community, reducing tailpipe emissions and allowing Frito-Lay to deliver products directly to retail customers.
  • Seven dual-head employee electric vehicle charging stations capable of charging up to 14 vehicles at one time.

Additionally, in 2021 the Frito-Lay Modesto site achieved sourcing 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources. On-site solar power provides up to 20 percent of the Modesto facility’s energy use daily.

“CARB’s approach to fighting local air pollution is to work with industry and other partners on projects that demonstrate how a fleet can protect public health by shifting to clean vehicle technologies and equipment. This includes zero-emission trucks and related charging infrastructure,” said CARB Executive Officer, Dr. Steven Cliff.  “The transformation of the Frito-Lay facility in Modesto is a notable example of this approach. It also makes the case to other fleets and freight facilities in California — and throughout the nation — that a shift by companies and fleets to the cleanest trucks and equipment directly improves the air for communities adjacent to these facilities.”

The Frito-Lay Modesto project was supported by the “California Climate Investments” (CCI) initiative in conjunction with the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District (SJVAPCD), and the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The total grant for $15.4 million covered a portion of the Frito-Lay transformation and the placement of a publicly accessible CNG station, owned by Beyond6, formerly known as American Natural Gas. The grant share for Frito-Lay was $12.2 million and the match funding required $13.5 million in cash and in-kind services. Other project participants include Café Coop, CALSTART, Project Clean Air, University of California and Riverside CE-CERT. Equipment and technology suppliers for the project include BYD Motors LLC, ChargePoint, Crown, Meritor, Peterbilt, Tesla and Volvo. California Climate Investments is a statewide initiative that puts billions of cap-and-trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment — particularly in disadvantaged communities. Kia Sportage Hybrid Named 2023 Edmunds Top Rated SUV

First Win for Sportage Hybrid in Competitive Selection Process

IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 18, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today, the 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid SUV was recognized as the 2023 Edmunds Top Rated SUV. This win recognizes the first-ever Sportage Hybrid in its first year of production.

Kia Sportage Hybrid Named 2023 Edmunds Top Rated SUV

“The Sportage Hybrid delivers a combination of refinement, interior room, and efficiency in a package that is more attractive than ever, and worthy of Edmunds’ best-in-segment honors,” said Steven Center, COO and EVP, Kia America. “With more than 125,000 units sold last year, the Sportage model lineup was our top seller and it’s clearly resonating with our customers as much as it is with the experts at Edmunds.”

Edmunds editors selected the Sportage Hybrid from among all mainstream and luxury SUV segments as best exemplifying an SUV that is accommodating, capable, comfortable and a strong value.

“The Kia Sportage Hybrid is a great example of why SUVs are now the default choice for American families. It’s comfortable, stylish, packed with the latest tech and blessed with a powerful hybrid system. It’s also a great value, which makes it an outstanding choice,” said Alistair Weaver, Editor-in-Chief, Edmunds.

The Sportage Hybrid paves a new pathway for Kia’s electrification efforts, as the third model in an ongoing cadence of electrified offerings guided by Kia’s global EV strategy, “Plan S.” Its electrified performance comes from a hybrid powertrain combining a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with a 44-kW motor that is rated at an EPA-estimated 43 MPG combined for the FWD variant and 38 MPG combined1 when equipped with available all-wheel-drive2. Working together, the engine and motor produce 227 horsepower.

As NY’s Population Rapidly Ages, AARP Unveils its 1st State Blueprint for Action to Improve Life for the 50+

0
AARP_New_York_Logo

Urges One-Stop Benefits Shop, Advance Public Disclosure of Rx Price Hikes, More

ALBANY, N.Y., Jan. 18, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Create a one-stop shop for New Yorkers to access all benefit programs for which they qualify. Require big drug companies to publicly disclose proposed price hikes in advance. Increase wages for home care workers and increase state funding for in-home services for the elderly to support New Yorkers aging in their own homes.

These are among many recommendations in “NY State Blueprint for Action,” AARP New York’s first such roadmap with policy priorities and actionable steps for the State to help improve life for the fastest-growing segment of New York’s population: the 50-plus.

New Yorkers 50 and older account for more than a third of the state’s population, contributing about $600 billion a year to the state’s economy and representing the driving force in New York’s cultural life and civic engagement. They account for the state’s leading volunteer base and represent the largest voter turnout bloc.

New York’s 50-plus have the experience, expertise and commitment to make our state’s future bright,” said AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel. “We must address the challenges they experience, and this blueprint provides a roadmap to help our leaders, legislators and policymakers tackle that task.”

Here are some of the blueprint’s top recommendations:

  • Stand up for nursing home residents by increasing funding for New York’s federally-required independent nursing home oversight agency, the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (LTCOP). AARP New York is urging a $15 million increase in the upcoming state budget for LTCOP to hire more professional staff and conduct weekly visits at all facilities. A recent AARP New York report found over 96% of nursing homes in New York City and nearly 60% statewide didn’t receive a single visit in the first quarter of 2022;
  • Ensure those who qualify for benefits receive them by creating a multilingual universal benefits form for older New Yorkers for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Medicare Savings Program – which helps seniors pay their Medicare premiums and prescription drug costs – and similar programs. This would establish a universal entry point “one-stop shop” that uses “data matching” to screen for all benefits and automatically submits applications the applicant opts into – as well as driving significant federal aid New York is now leaving on the table;
  • One step toward that goal would be to enact a bill introduced last year (S8362A-Parker)/A9099A-Cusick) to require the State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to coordinate with utilities on automated file matching for Energy Affordability Program participants;
  • Fight skyrocketing prescription drug costs by requiring public reporting of proposed price hikes in advance – as Governor Kathy Hochul proposed in her 2023 State of the State Message – allowing safe and legal importation of FDA-approved prescription drugs from Canada, and limiting New York prescription drug prices to the much lower Canadian prices;
  • Incentivize more New Yorkers to earn their way out of poverty through work by removing the EITC age cap so the fast-growing number of working New Yorkers 65-plus can qualify – and increase the credit from 30% to 40% of the federal credit;
  • Support fair pay for home care workers by establishing a floor based on 150% of the regional minimum wage, and increase State funding for home- and community-based services for the elderly – both of which would support New Yorkers ageing in their own homes as the vast majority want;
  • Confront the affordable housing crunch by encouraging creation of more properly regulated and safeguarded “mother-in-law apartments,” known as accessory dwelling units (ADUs) – while urging municipalities to access $85 million in current year funding to update existing ADUs and build new units;
  • Encourage home accessibility by increasing funding for the Access to Home Program, which provides financial assistance to make residential units accessible for low- and moderate-income persons with disabilities, and for the Residential Emergency Services to Offer (Home) Repairs to the Elderly (RESTORE) program, which provides financial resources to help homeowners age 60 and over address health and safety-related emergencies and code violations;
  • Fight age discrimination by enacting a bill that passed the State Senate last year to prohibit employers from requiring job applicants to disclose age, date of birth or date of graduation unless the employer can demonstrate how that information relates to the job;
  • Encourage more New Yorkers to save for retirement by including “gig” workers in the Secure Choice Savings Program, which requires private sector employers to offer retirement savings options to employees that do not currently have a plan;
  • Support New Yorkers in fighting unfair utility rate hikes by providing “intervenor” reimbursement to help give residential utility customers an equal footing with utility companies and big business groups before regulators.

“NY State Blueprint” is available online. AARP New York staff and volunteers will share hard copies of the book and meet with leaders across the state to discuss policy solutions and push for increased support and attention to the issues and recommendations outlined in the blueprint.

While everyone looked to follow popular trends in music, Ricardo Arjona once again chose his own path and ventured out to the legendary Abbey Road studios to produce 24 original songs. Once again contradicting everything that exists in music in Spanish and reinforcing more than ever what he knows how to do best.

Anyone who thinks that BLANCO Y NEGRO is the most popular project on the radio, or that appears in the most playlists on Spotify are wrong. With a black and white aesthetic and a video for each song, recorded in the same studio in London where the 24 songs were made, Ricardo Arjona started a project amid a pandemic that industry scholars pointed out as doomed to fail. It brought together elements not commonly used nowadays in the music industry recording live instruments with equipment from the 60s, without any technological fuss.

To this day, BLANCO Y NEGRO, with close to 100 shows between Europe, United States and Latin America, is one of the most popular tours in the market. More than a million and a half people attended the concerts last year, all claiming that the show is not just a concert but a unique experience. The tour was distinguished as one of the 20 most powerful tours in the world along with Coldplay’s and several others.

The official sale for the general public is Friday, January 20, 2023 at 10 a.m. EST (local time). For information on ticket sales visit: www.ricardoarjona.com
