Feed the Children and StarKist® Partner to Serve 400 Evansville Families

Food, essentials to be distributed at community event

EVANSVILLE, Ind., June 10, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Feed the Children and StarKist® are joining forces to provide food and essentials to 400 families in the Evansville area from 5 to 7 p.m. June 10 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church (2300 Washington Ave.) The event is part of organizations’ efforts to fight summer hunger.

At the event, each family will receive a 25-pound box of food, a 15-pound box of essentials (such as shampoo, conditioner and personal care items), a 5-pound box of Avon products and children’s books and StarKist products from Feed the Children and StarKist®.

Though an end to the pandemic may be in sight, many families are still suffering and too many children wondering where their next meal will come from. For many families, a significant gap exists between what they can pay for and their food needs—to say nothing of nutritional needs. Nearly 30 million children rely on free or reduced lunches, and not all of them can take advantage of feeding programs that have been set up by schools in the wake of COVID-19. As a result, many families must still make impossible choices between buying food and paying utility bills or other necessary costs like transportation and childcare.

With more than 22 percent of families in the Evansville community living below the poverty line, the summer can be especially difficult once school is out, leaving children food insecure – without a source for consistent meals.

“StarKist has heart for those in need, and we are proud to continue our partnership with Feed the Children in Evansville, Indiana,” said Michelle Faist, Head of Corporate Affairs, StarKist Co. “It’s an honor to give back to members of this community and we hope to replicate this event in other cities around the U.S. over the next few months.”

Since 2009, the national partnership has brought beneficial community resource events as well as nutritious and protein-packed StarKist products to families in need across the U.S.

“Today, we are not only providing food and essentials to these families—but also hope,” said Travis Arnold, Feed the Children CEO and president. “Hope for a better future that is made possible thanks to our partners at StarKist who play a vital role in helping us to create a world where no child goes to bed hungry.”

About Feed the Children

At Feed the Children, we feed hungry kids. We envision a world where no child goes to bed hungry. In the U.S. and internationally, we are dedicated to helping families and communities achieve stable lives and to reducing the need for help tomorrow, while providing food and resources to help them today. We distribute product donations from corporate donors to local community partners, we provide support for teachers and students, and we mobilize resources quickly to aid recovery efforts when natural disasters strike. Internationally, we manage child-focused community development programs in 9 countries. We welcome partnerships because we know our work would not be possible without collaborative relationships.

Macario Morales’ new book “Las Consecuencias De Vivir Una Vida Ingobernable” follows a contemplative journey of getting lost in order to find a person’s God-given purpose.

Macario Morales

MADERA, Calif., June 11, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Macario Morales, a diligent man who worked hard in agriculture, has completed his new book “Las Consecuencias De Vivir Una Vida Ingobernable”: a reflective memoir that recounts on the past mistakes of the author and the bitter price he has to pay. In this brutally honest account, the author hopes that his catastrophic life will prevent anyone from committing the same mistakes that he did.

Morales writes, “One day I woke up with tremendous pain in my body from so many blows, my lips were full of stitches, my eyes were swollen from the blows and I looked at myself in the mirror: It can’t be! I said inside myself. I wondered what I needed to be like this, and I began to reconsider and look back, my past, and I asked myself, how far had I gone with my way of being and I have not achieved anything good. I wasted many years of my life, which I would like you to avoid. Many years of suffering, for not knowing how to live, many years went to waste. I already lived it and it is not at all pleasant to live an ungovernable life. What would I not give, in order to start over and avoid this dark path, the only thing I know, and I have learned, is that after this life there is no other opportunity, and today is all I have for. Therefore I must make the most of it.

It took me a lot of work to accept and give my arm to twist. It was not easy for me, not impossible, but I did it. And now I am a different man because I have changed my life, and I can shout it to the wind, since that aggressive, leper, spoiled, rude, quarreling Macario no longer exists within me, he has diminished and the true Macario has been reborn. And blessed and praised be God that I am completely different now. If I can change my life, you can too, since we are all children of a loving God.

I looked for the opportunity and the opportunity came to me. He smiled at me and said ‘Here I am, I’m by your side and we’re going forward, that life is a battle.'”

Published by Page Publishing, Macario Morales’ true-to-life narrative assists its readers in finding healing from the scars of the past. Moreover, the author aims that his unperfect life which was once filled with sin can be a bridge between God and the readers who are currently living an unruly life.

Readers who wish to experience this life-changing work can purchase “Las Consecuencias De Vivir Una Vida Ingobernable” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

2021 TLX Type S Will Pace 99th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Driven by Car Nut and TV Personality Ant Anstead

TORRANCE, Calif., June 10, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Acura’s best performing sedan ever, the new 2021 TLX Type S, will pace the 99th running of The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo on June 27. Driving the TLX Type S pace car up the challenging 12.42-mile hill climb will be television personality and self-proclaimed car nut Ant Anstead, former host of enthusiast programs like “Wheeler Dealers,” “Master Mechanic” and co-founder of Radford Motors.

2021 TLX Type S Will Pace 99th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Driven by Car Nut and TV Personality Ant Anstead

The TLX Type S is well suited to pace the field on Colorado’s challenging mountain course with its turbocharged V6 engine producing 355-horsepower, standard Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) with true torque-vectoring, quick-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission, Brembo® front brakes and double-wishbone front suspension. Moreover, its Type S-exclusive Sport+ driving mode sharpens responses for even greater performance and driver enjoyment.

Known as the Race to the Clouds, Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is one of America’s longest running motorsports competitions. Since 1916, drivers from all over the world and a wide variety of vehicles from multiple motorsports disciplines race against the clock as they take on the 156-turn course, starting at 9,390 feet and climbing to the 14,115 summit.

Last year, a development prototype of the highly-anticipated TLX Type S paced the historic hill climb and Acura vehicles have competed in the event since 2012, recording numerous race records and podium finishes. In 2020, Honda R&D engineer James Robinson beat his own Hybrid record by more than half a second behind the wheel of an Acura NSX with a time of 10:01.913. Acura also holds the front-wheel drive record, set by James’ brother and fellow engineer Nick Robinson (10:48.094) in 2018, and the Pikes Peak Open all-wheel drive record (9:24.433) was set by race car driver Peter Cunningham in 2019, driving the Acura TLX GT race car.

British television personality and car restorer Ant Anstead gained popularity in his home country on shows such as “For the Love of Cars” before becoming a household name in the U.S. co-hosting “Wheeler Dealers.” Recently, Anstead and business partner, Formula One World Champion Jenson Button, are bringing luxury coachbuilding back with Radford Motors.

BERKELEY, Calif., June 10, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Participant Energy announces the commencement of construction on a 14.7 MW solar array in Honduras. The client, Green Valley Industrial Park, located near San Pedro Sula, is a world-class industrial facility with multinational clients such as Lear Corporation, Simtex, and Gildan Textiles.

About Participant Energy: Participant Energy is a U.S. based international renewable energy development company, focusing on clean power for California, Central America, and the Caribbean. www.participantenergy.com (PRNewsFoto/Participant Energy)

Participant Energy, a renewable energy developer based in Northern California, began working in Honduras in 2018 after developing solar in Costa Rica as part of that government’s official solar initiative, Plan Piloto. Nick Goodwin Self, CEO of Participant Energy, stated, “We believe that due to the prestige of the client and the fact that this is largest private commercial solar facility built to date in Honduras, this venture will have a catalytic effect on valuable new markets for renewable energy in this sector.” The PPA will save Green Valley 20 percent on their energy costs from day one. Gustavo Raudales, Director General of Grupo Karims, which owns Green Valley Industrial Park, affirmed, “Participant Energy is meeting the challenge we face here in Honduras to develop not only more affordable energy, but clean renewable energy to help grow Honduras’ rising industrial and commercial development, while remaining conscious of increasing environmental concerns.”

Participant Energy, working with industrial-scale agriculture, has developed some of the largest solar arrays in Northern California. The company is also pioneering agricultural waste-to-energy gasification technology to create clean synthetic fuels from rice hulls, nut shells and bagasse. This produce-gas can also be used with linear gas-powered generators to produce electricity for baseload operations, as well as providing emergency back-up generation during periods of grid destabilization.

Legendary Artist Emilio Sanchez Honored

0
USPS_Logo

MIAMI, June 10, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The U.S. Postal Service today celebrates the art of Emilio Sanchez (1921-1999) on the centennial of his birth with four new stamps featuring his colorful architectural lithographs and paintings. The pane of 20 stamps showcases Sanchez’s architectural works: “Los Toldos” (1973), “Ty’s Place” (1976), “En el Souk” (1972) and “Untitled (Ventanita entreabierta)” (1981). It may be purchased at usps.com/sanchezstamp. The dedication ceremony was held at the LnS Gallery in Miami.

“The Postal Service is pleased to salute Emilio Sanchez, an artist best known for his brilliant collection of architectural paintings and lithographs,” said USPS Board of Governors Vice Chairman Roman Martinez IV, who noted Sanchez is the first Cuban American artist to have his work honored on a U.S. postage stamp.

“Today happens to be the centennial of his birth, a perfect occasion to honor the man whose masterful works can be found in the permanent collections of museums and universities around the world,” Martinez said.

Joining Martinez at the dedication ceremony were Erik Stapper, trustee, Emilio Sanchez Foundation; Elizabeth Goizueta, author and lecturer, Romance languages and literature, and adjunct curator, McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College; Victor Deupi, senior lecturer, University of Miami School of Architecture; Jill Deupi, Beaux Arts director and chief curator for the Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami; and Richard Blanco, 2013 presidential inaugural poet for President Barack Obama, memoirist, and associate professor, Florida International University.

“We are celebrating the first day of issue of stamps that honor Emilio Sanchez, my client who about 25 years ago gave me a simple estate planning instruction: ‘Make me famous,'” said Erik Stapper, trustee, Emilio Sanchez Foundation. “Can there be a better birthday gift for our Cuban American immigrant friend than millions of new images by Emilio offered for sale at our local Post Offices? Each of those millions of images has a printed line that will serve as my words of welcome: Emilio Sanchez Forever USA.”

“This is a tremendous accomplishment, particularly given how long he had been largely overlooked by the art community,” said Victor Deupi, a Cuban American teacher of architectural history at the University of Miami. “It’s a wonderful honor on many fronts because it gives so many voices to people of different races and ethnic backgrounds.”

Sanchez explored the effects of light and shadow in his art to emphasize the abstract geometry of his subjects. His artwork encompasses his Cuban heritage as well as his long life in New York City.

Combining naturalism and abstraction, Sanchez’s architectural paintings and lithographs are not precise renderings but rather subjective interpretations of reality. Each work often depicts a single building. All extraneous details have been stripped away, although sometimes he highlights a specific feature, such as a balustrade, arched doorway or balcony. Strong light and deep shadows play across each building’s facade, delineating and emphasizing its abstract geometry without ever obscuring its true character.

His early subjects included houses and other buildings in Mexico, the Caribbean and the United States, where he became a naturalized citizen in 1968. However, he remained especially drawn to Cuban architecture, which features a rich mix of Victorian, colonial and rustic rural styles.

By the 1970s, Sanchez had widened his focus to include buildings in Morocco and in other Mediterranean countries. He also found continued inspiration in the cityscape of New York, which became more prevalent in his works of the 1980s and 1990s.

Antonio Alcalá served as art director and designer for the Emilio Sanchez stamps, which are being issued as Forever stamps. These Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price.

The selvage features a photograph of Sanchez taken by Alexis Rodriguez-Duarte in June 1993. In the photograph, Sanchez sketches at the drawing table in his New York City loft studio.

New Study: Despite Small, Steady Increases in Latinx Students Attending Summer Learning Programs, Latinx Children’s Participation Now Lags Behind Other Groups

0

WASHINGTON, June 10, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The summer of 2021 will be vitally important, as students and families try to recover from the isolation, trauma, and learning loss the pandemic caused. Yet a new study that looks in-depth at summer learning in 2019 and 2020 finds that Latinx student participation in programs remains low, despite some recent growth and remarkably high parent satisfaction. Just 44% of Latinx families with children report that their child was involved in a summer learning program in 2019 – an increase from 39% in 2013 and 29% in 2008. But while 2.7 million Latinx children took part in a structured summer experience in 2019, nearly 4.4 million more would have been enrolled if a program were available to them, their parents said.

Those are among the findings from Summertime in America for Latinx Families and Communities, a household survey released today. Commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance and conducted by Edge Research, it finds that 47% of families overall report at least one of their children participated in a summer program in 2019, compared to just 44% of Latinx students.

Then in 2020, participation in summer programs dropped further, as the pandemic upended education and work and family life. Just 28% of Latinx families report that their child participated in a structured summer experience last year, compared to 34% of families overall. More than half of Latinx students in a program last year (56%) participated virtually. A structured summer experience is defined in the study to include a summer learning program, sports program, summer camp, summer school, or summer job or internship – different from childcare.

“More than ever, our kids need academic help, social/emotional support, and opportunities to engage with peers and caring adults, be physically active, and have fun,” said Afterschool Alliance Executive Director Jodi Grant. “We must do better by giving all students access to the summer learning programs they need. Cost and transportation should not remain barriers to participation. This summer, we have a responsibility to meet the need for Latinx youth as we work to meet the needs of all children and youth.”

WASHINGTON, June 10, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Ahead of National Get Outdoors Day on June 12, the USDA Forest Service and the Ad Council today announced new public service advertisements (PSAs) from the Discover the Forest campaign. Since 2009, the Ad Council and USDA Forest Service’s Discover the Forest campaign has encouraged parents and caregivers to take their families out to the forest to experience and reconnect with nature. The new creative work highlights the power of authentic storytelling to showcase the value of the forest as a place where families can deepen their connection with each other and with the outdoors. The PSAs culminate in a singular ask: make the forest part of your family’s story.

“In these times, we are excited that so many families are visiting the outdoors and reconnecting with each other, themselves, and nature,” said Tinelle Bustam, Director, Conservation Education, Forest Service, State and Private Forestry at the USDA Forest Service. “We are deeply grateful to the storytelling artists for their depictions of the forests and family connection. We look forward to engaging families in making the forest part of their story through this campaign.”

This newest creative installment was developed pro bono by David&Goliath, in partnership with multidisciplinary artists Joe Cepeda and Shabazz Larkin. Cepeda and Larkin crafted culturally resonant stories, respectively, for Latino and Black audiences, which serve as the basis of the PSAs. “Our Colors,” written by Cepeda, illustrates how nature inspires art and links us through generations. Larkin’s story entitled “Am I A Tree?” showcases the lessons that humans can learn from trees about how to live and grow. Custom illustrations by Cepeda and Larkin also appear throughout the PSAs. The full suite of assets (including TV, radio, print, outdoor and digital banners) will be available in English and Spanish.

The creative aims to reach all parents and caregivers, with an emphasis on fostering a sense of connection to and belonging in nature among Black and Latino families. While participation in outdoor recreation has increased among Black and Hispanic Americans over the last decade, current participation rates still do not reflect our diverse population in the U.S., and Black and Hispanic Americans remain underrepresented outside.1

“Over the last year, we’ve seen the outdoors become a place of respite for families, and as we head into summer, we know many are eager to continue enjoying and exploring nature,” said Michelle Hillman, Chief Campaign Development Officer at the Ad Council. “This newest iteration of Discover the Forest amplifies authentic and impactful storytelling from two talented artists to help ensure that everyone can envision making the forest part of their family’s story.”

The latest iteration of Discover the Forest also includes a Digital Storybook activity. This new tool allows parents and caregivers to select one of the stories created by Cepeda and Larkin and upload their own family photographs, creating a unique digital memory book capturing their experiences in the forest. In addition to “Am I A Tree?” and “Our Colors,” the Digital Storybook includes two other stories from Larkin and Cepeda, respectively: “We’ve Got the World in Our Hands,” which explores our role as protectors and keepers of nature, and “Stories in the Stars,” which illustrates how we are connected to our ancestors through the stars.

“The stories I wrote for this campaign came partially through craft and partially from personal experience,” said Cepeda. “As a family, we have spent time out in the woods, in the desert and under starry skies. I hope audiences will be able to relate to the feelings my own family has experienced when we venture out – the perspective we get from looking out over a canyon or standing at the foot of a redwood tree. Nature reminds us that we’re stronger and more resourceful than we may realize, and we all need to do a better job of caring for the places we live.”

“My hope in writing these stories is two-fold,” said Larkin. “I hope people will find trust in their joy – to go to the forest with no other intention but to play. I also hope that this campaign reminds everyone that Earth is home for all humans. Little Black boys and girls need to know that the earth is our inheritance just as anyone else and protecting our inheritance is our work, too.”

“We wanted to take this campaign a step further than just creating another set of PSAs and really provide a genuine connection to the forest that would resonate with our target audience,” said Lixaida Lorenzo, Executive Creative Director. “From this sentiment, Joe and Shabazz crafted these unique stories that our audiences can relate to in an immediate and visceral way. Stories that just don’t talk to them, but belong to them.”

Creative agency partner Wordsworth + Booth is developing additional radio assets to extend this new round of PSAs, with creative that also uses storytelling to demonstrate how the forest can bring imagination to life and allow families to connect in their own unique ways.

Across all PSAs, audiences are directed to DiscoverTheForest.org and DescubreElBosque.org, where they can search for nearby forests, parks and trails and where they’ll find ideas for outdoor-focused activities. The new PSAs will run nationwide in time and space donated by the media, per the Ad Council’s model.
