Many Americans unable to pay bills or cover unexpected expenses and lack critical financial knowledge, survey shows

2021_P_Fin_Index

NEW YORK, April 5, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Twenty-two percent of U.S. adults report they are unable to pay their bills in full and on time in a typical month, and 30 percent would not be able to cover an unexpected $2,000 expense, according to new data from the fifth annual Personal Finance Index (P-Fin Index) released by the TIAA Institute and the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center (GFLEC) at the George Washington University School of Business.

Results from the P-Fin Index indicate that a significant portion of American adults still struggle with financial literacy. After four years of incremental growth in financial literacy, the percentage of P-Fin Index questions respondents answered correctly decreased by 2 percentage points in 2021, with respondents correctly answering only 50 percent of the questions. Comprehending risk continues to be the area in which financial literacy is lowest, with U.S. adults on average correctly answering only 37 percent of questions on this topic.

“This year’s Personal Finance Index reveals the precarious financial situations of many Americans, which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said TIAA Institute Senior Economist Paul Yakoboski. “But we have also seen Americans become increasingly motivated since the onset of COVID to improve their personal finances. Now is the time to focus on enhancing financial literacy as we look forward to life post-COVID.”

Financial challenges and lower levels of financial literacy are significantly more prevalent among the Black and Hispanic communities who face structural inequities and longstanding institutional biases:

  • Thirty-two percent of individuals in these U.S. demographic groups find it difficult to make ends meet in a typical month, compared to 18 percent of white Americans.
  • Fifty-six percent of Black Americans and 53 percent of Hispanics do not have non-retirement savings sufficient to cover one month of living expenses, compared to 35 percent of white Americans.
  • Blacks and Hispanics correctly answered 37 percent and 41 percent, respectively, of the P-Fin Index questions, compared to white Americans, who correctly answered 55 percent.

“Our data shows a direct link between financial literacy and financial well-being, and demonstrates how knowledge can help better position Americans against adverse economic conditions,” said Annamaria Lusardi, University Professor and Academic Director of GFLEC. “Just as we need to address institutional barriers, we must also break down barriers to financial well-being as part of the recovery path from COVID-19, and that includes greater access to financial literacy.”

The P-Fin Index is unique in its capacity to produce a robust measure of overall personal finance knowledge as well as an analysis of knowledge across multiple areas of personal finance. It also identifies how financial literacy contributes to financial wellness. The index consists of 28 questions spanning eight functional areas:

  • Earning: determinants of wages and take-home pay.
  • Consuming: budgets and managing spending.
  • Saving: factors that maximize accumulations.
  • Investing: investment types, risk and return.
  • Borrowing/managing debt: relationship between loan features and repayments.
  • Insuring: types of coverage and how insurance works.
  • Comprehending risk: understanding uncertain financial outcomes.
  • Go-to information sources: recognizing appropriate sources and advice.

MEXICO CITY, April 1, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Direct Relief, working with the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, BIRMEX, and the Nicaragua Ministry of Health (MINSA), transported this week 650,000 doses of the polio vaccine to Nicaragua to bolster the nation’s child vaccination efforts.

BIRMEX packing polio vaccine in cold-shipping boxes for transport by Direct Relief to Nicaragua.

The supplies were delivered via a Direct Relief-chartered AeroMexico flight from Mexico City to Managua on Wednesday.

Like most vaccines, the polio vaccine is a cold-chain medication; it must be kept refrigerated between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, delivered in special containers, with the temperature throughout transit and final delivery.

Earlier this month, Direct Relief, a registered civil association in Mexico with tax-deductible status, worked with the Government of Mexico to transport 95,000 doses of bivalent oral polio vaccine to Ecuador.

Pharmaceutical distributors—and Direct Relief—are among the only organizations with cold-chain vaccine shipment capability.

Direct Relief has extensive experience working with the world’s largest medical manufacturers to distribute cold-chain prescription medications connected with humanitarian and emergency-response efforts.

In 2020, Direct Relief completed nearly two thousand cold-chain deliveries of such products, managing end-to-end distribution to health facilities across the United States, Mexico, and more than 50 other countries.

The deliveries contained 21.6 million doses of temperature-sensitive medications, including insulin, cancer drugs, hemophilia treatments, vaccines, and biologic therapies for patients with rare genetic diseases.

This will allow the company to further its commitment on delivering full life cycle solutions as a turn-key Design-Build-Operations-Maintenance partner for its clients in the Industrial space.

“There are two things that give me satisfaction and purpose in my role,” said Mr. Roudebush. “The first is learning and teaching on the job; I am now in a position to hire skilled individuals and develop a highly functional team for our Operations group. “Steve brings with him a plethora of experience in the Industrial Design-Build space, delivering on projects from a few million dollars to $300 million plus, that has earned him a strong reputation in the industry,” said Payman Farrokhyar, President of Total-Western. “We couldn’t have asked for a better leader in this role.”

Steve has worked as an engineer and project manager for more than 40 years at various companies, including ARCO, Ciba Geigy, Jacobs Engineering, Tesoro and Marathon. In his previous roles, he oversaw multiple refinery, bio-pharmaceutical, power, and semi-conductor projects, and led EPC teams through all phases of project execution. He has led teams of more than 200 people on projects of various sizes, from small to mid-size to large projects over $100 million.

Mr. Roudebush earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and his MBA in Business Administration from Pepperdine University.

New XGT® System, the future of cordless, launches with over 50 cordless equipment and tools to handle the most demanding applications

LA MIRADA, Calif., April 1, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Makita U.S.A., Inc. is expanding its leadership in cordless innovation with the launch of the 40V max and 80V max XGT® System, a new standalone cordless system of equipment and tools. The XGT System delivers over fifty higher-powered cordless product solutions to applications dominated by cords, gas, and air.

Makita U.S.A., Inc. Logo

The new XGT System is engineered to outpower, outsmart, and outlast the rest, and take the job site completely cordless. The XGT System will offer two power ranges: 40V max and 80V max products achieved by pairing two 40V max XGT Batteries together. By staying within the user-preferred 18V battery form factor, yet expanding the technical capabilities, an XGT Battery can power everything from equipment to a handheld drill.

Cordless Experts

Since 2005, the category-leading 18V LXT® System has made significant strides in moving a job site cordless. Makita’s purpose-built brushless motors, battery technology, and enhanced communications work together to deliver unmatched power, speed, and run time. The LXT System currently offers over 275 products, with many more LXT Products coming soon. This experience and engineering knowledge set the LXT System apart within the industry and led to the development of the high-powered XGT System.

Cordless Performance Beyond Limits

“For the highest-demand applications and a truly cordless job site, Makita has taken cordless performance beyond limits with the creation of XGT,” explains Mario Lopez, director of product management, Makita U.S.A.  “We’re providing more power without forcing users to buy big, heavy, slow-charging batteries for use on a limited number of tools. XGT is launching with fifty products – an unheard-of amount at launch, and more will be coming soon.”

The XGT System is the future of cordless equipment and tools designed to outpower, outsmart, and outlast the competition. For contractors, XGT means more battery-powered solutions so they can work without cords, gas, and air.

  • Outpower: The XGT System utilizes advanced brushless motor engineering with a higher volume of copper windings and highest-quality rare earth magnets for longer run time, increased power and speed, and longer tool life. The Makita-built brushless motors are equipped with sophisticated electronics that enable more precision settings and power. With the power and precision of electronically controlled brushless motors, select XGT equipment and tools can deliver up to two-times faster application speeds when compared to a similar corded counterpart.

Outsmart: XGT is a smart system with digital technology that enables communication between the tool and battery during use, as well as the charger and battery during charging. Digital communication within the XGT System optimizes performance to provide up to two-times longer sustained power under heavy-load applications, and actively monitors and protects against overload, over-discharge, and overheating. This real-time communication enables the battery and motor to work together for optimum tool performance. With Makita’s engineering and technology know-how, higher voltage XGT Batteries can achieve faster charge times than industry standards. XGT Batteries can reach a full charge in as little as 28 minutes.

  • Outlast: XGT Tools and Batteries are engineered for durability with features to minimize damage and protect the user’s investment. The batteries feature an impact-absorbing structure with a durable outer casing and cell holder that creates space within the pack to absorb impact if the battery is dropped. The battery has a triple-layer and enhanced terminal structure engineered to protect against exposure to water and dust. XGT Equipment and Tools feature Extreme Protection Technology (XPT), a series of integrated seals inside the tool for added protection against dust and moisture. These durability features make XGT ideal for work outside in unpredictable weather or on pipework and plumbing systems.

From Equipment to Hand-Held in One Platform

Makita is launching a range of high-powered equipment and tools, including demolition hammers, rotary hammers, miter saws, circular and reciprocating saws, angle grinders, impact driver and wrenches, drills, lighting and more. For users interested in operating two platforms, the XGT Charger with Adapter (ADP10, sold separately) will charge both XGT and LXT Batteries.

The XGT System is shipping for distribution in April. The XGT System will proceed with quarterly launches thereafter.

Leading Latinx Dating App Chispa Reaches 4MM Downloads & Partners with Tragos Party Card Game to Launch New Feature

0

DALLAS, March 31, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Chispa, the largest dating app designed for Latinx singles, reaches a new milestone of 4 million downloads this week just as they announce the official launch of a new feature in partnership with Tragos, the ultimate card game for Latinos, that will take users’ dating app experience to the next level. Chispa’s user base, which has grown 28% year-over-year (Q1 2020 vs Q1 2021), can now experience a one-of-a-kind version of the popular card game within the app.

Earlier this year, Chispa surveyed members and found that 56 percent of Latino users have a hard time starting a conversation on a dating app, and 74 percent of users said a game would help as an icebreaker when meeting potential matches. With the Chispa and Tragos feature, singles will have new, clever conversation-starters to bond over answers to a series of culturally relevant questions.

“Breaking the 4 million downloads mark in just over three years since Chispa’s launch is no small feat and we’re proud to be the first dating app for Latinx singles to reach that milestone as we continue to look for innovative and culturally relevant ways to connect our members,” said Julia Estacolchic, Director of Brand Marketing for Chispa. “Partnering with Tragos for this new feature was a no-brainer for us; we are thrilled to have Tragos onboard to help us make the process more relatable and entertaining for Latinos by providing them with the opportunity to answer a series of light-hearted questions that will inevitably spark conversations based on their responses.”

Together with Chispa, the masterminds behind Tragos – a card game that uses common Latinx themes, and universal cultural anecdotes – created hundreds of questions that users will be able to answer and display on their profiles. Singles will have the option to answer hilarious, yet highly relatable, questions like “Do you fear la chancla?” or “Ever get hit with ‘¿y el novio/ la novia?‘ at family gatherings?”. This new feature will allow singles to connect further on cultural references, upbringing, and start conversations based on clever questions and nuances, opening the door for potential matches to build stronger connections.

“We understand that Latinos like to connect and laugh over their shared experiences and traditions. Through this partnership with Chispa, we are excited to bring this same interaction that Tragos players have grown to love into the digital space and provide users with a fun, interactive feature that will foster stronger connections,” said Carolina Acosta, Founder of Tragos.

Chispa’s new feature with Tragos is now live on the app available on the iOS App Store and Google Play.
