IBHS’s latest OFB-EZ business continuity planning toolkit now available in Spanish

0

TAMPA, Fla., March 16, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Recognizing the vital role Spanish speakers play in small businesses across the country, the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) today released the new streamlined version of its free business continuity planning toolkit, Open For Business-EZ, better known as OFB-EZ, in Spanish to aid more owners and operators in planning for the variety of disasters that can jeopardize operations.

“Resilience must be accessible to all to keep local economies strong. Spanish-speakers play a critical role in communities across the country, and we cannot let language barriers stand in the way,” says IBHS managing director of Commercial Lines, Chuck Miccolis.

The new streamlined version of OFB-EZ provides step-by-step guidance for business owners and staff to build and maintain a business continuity plan that will help them prepare for, respond to, and recover faster from a minor disruption or major disaster.

According to the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, there are more than 4.7 million Hispanic-owned businesses across the country.

“Hispanic-owned small businesses are a driving force in our nation’s economy. Helping these businesses prepare for potential disruptions like severe weather is key to building resilient communities,” adds Gail Moraton, business resiliency manager at IBHS.

Available for download in a PDF or Word format, OFB-EZ is a streamlined toolkit comprised of ten modules designed to help busy small business owners and operators identify and mitigate risks. OFB-EZ provides a roadmap to preparedness by laying out simple tasks necessary to develop a business continuity plan, including developing an employee contact list, reviewing and documenting insurance policies, building a plan for supply chain disruptions and other exercises to address key business vulnerabilities.

“Many businesses are unprepared for a weather disaster or disruption like a long-term power outage. By using OFB-EZ to develop a business continuity plan, small businesses can be better positioned to recover from an interruption,” explains Moraton.

OFB-EZ Spanish Edition adds to the suite of free business preparedness materials available to all small businesses from IBHS. Download the no-cost toolkit at DisasterSafety.org/ofb-ez.

Community Garden Will Help Feed People In Need

Globe Life (PRNewsfoto/Globe Life)

MCKINNEY, Texas, March 15, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The garden at Community Garden Kitchen (CGK) is taking root. To further CGK’s mission, Globe Life, located in McKinney, Texas, has donated $50,000 to sponsor the Globe Life Garden, a raised-bed garden located on roughly .25 acres of land at 501 Howard Street in McKinney. CGK will be the first kitchen in Collin County to allow those in need to dine with dignity. CGK will prepare and offer freshly cooked meals to anyone in need, no paperwork required, no questions asked. The kitchen, approximately 4,400 square feet, is expected to open this spring.

Globe Life (PRNewsfoto/Globe Life)

As Community Garden Kitchen, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, nears the finish line with construction of a new kitchen, this important piece of the nonprofit is beginning to grow. In addition to the garden serving as a source of food in the kitchen to feed people in need, the Globe Life Garden will also be used to teach gardening skills to anyone interested in learning how to grow food, even on a small plot of land.

“At Globe Life, our mission is to Make Tomorrow Better. Our partnership with Community Garden Kitchen allows us to grow stronger together as a community by providing for a daily need and giving our employees the opportunity to actively volunteer,” said Jennifer Haworth, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Globe Life.

The Episcopal Diocese of Dallas, the property owner, is leasing the land to CGK for $10 a year. Volunteers have already cleared debris, trimmed trees, and planted seeds. A design is in the works along with grass removal and installation of a watering system. While McKinney Roots, another local nonprofit, has donated many needed materials, the garden will have additional costs for design, development, and continued growth. Donations to Community Garden Kitchen will help purchase materials for 16 raised beds, fertile soil, various vegetable and fruit seeds, irrigation equipment and needed gardening supplies.

“We are very excited and grateful to see all the volunteers who are working to create a beautiful and bountiful garden that will benefit so many in our community,” said Angela Poen. “We hope others will want to help us grow too!” Volunteers can find opportunities on CGK’s website at www.communitygardenkitchen.org.

Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto receives Vilcek Prize in Filmmaking

NEW YORK, March 15, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Vilcek Foundation has produced a new video and published an article highlighting the life and work of cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto. Born in Mexico, Prieto became one of the most coveted cinematographers in Hollywood following his work on Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 2000 film Amores Perros. Late last year, Prieto was announced as the recipient of the 2021 Vilcek Prize in Filmmaking.

A photograph of Rodrigo Prieto. Photo courtesy of The Vilcek Foundation.

In the video and article, Prieto speaks about his early experiments in filmmaking on Super 8, and his love for the art and craft of cinematography. “You can’t sometimes describe why a certain texture, a certain color, a certain framing ‘feels’ a certain way, but it does,” he says. “Cinematography is an abstract art form in the sense that an audience doesn’t realize how they’re being manipulated—by the lighting, by the camerawork, by the lens choice—to evoke emotional states.”

Prieto is known for his meticulous setups, unconventional camerawork, and ability to create moving, visceral cinematic experiences. His frequent collaborators include Martin Scorsese, Ang Lee, Oliver Stone, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Julie Taymor. Nominated for three Academy Awards—for his work on Lee’s Brokeback Mountain (2006) and Scorsese’s Silence (2017) and The Irishman (2019)—Prieto has also been recognized by the Independent Spirit Awards, BAFTA, and the American Society of Cinematographers.

The son of an artist and an aeronautical engineer, Prieto balances technology and artistry to create the visual qualities he desires to accomplish a given effect or atmosphere—from using infrared film to dramatic effect in Oliver Stone’s Alexander to the meticulous referencing of film stock color profiles he undertook to achieve period looks over five decades in The Irishman. “That combination of my mother’s visual artistry and my father’s technical ability is something that I have in my DNA,” he says, “utilizing technology and different techniques to create art.”

“I want to participate in movies that say something to me from an emotional level,” says Prieto. “I gravitate to scripts and ideas that have something that I want to explore in myself.”

The Vilcek Prize in Filmmaking is awarded as part of the Vilcek Foundation Prizes in the arts and humanities. Awarded in a different category each year, the prizes recognize and celebrate the contributions of immigrant vanguards and innovators in each category.

“As leaders in the arts, we have a responsibility to promote diversity by making space, providing access, and amplifying the artistic contributions of marginalized groups and individuals,” says Vilcek Foundation President Rick Kinsel. “The Vilcek Prizes in the arts and humanities enable us to speak to the value of immigration for our society in a non-politicized way.”

Read the article and watch the full video from the Vilcek Foundation at the following link: Rodrigo Prieto: “Being a foreigner gives you a certain perspective.”

The Vilcek Foundation

The Vilcek Foundation raises awareness of immigrant contributions in the United States and fosters appreciation of the arts and sciences. The foundation was established in 2000 by Jan and Marica Vilcek, immigrants from the former Czechoslovakia. The mission of the foundation—to honor immigrant contributions to the United States, and more broadly to foster appreciation of the arts and sciences—was inspired by the couple’s respective careers in biomedical science and art history. Since 2000, the foundation has awarded over $5.8 million in prizes to foreign-born individuals and supported organizations with over $5.2 million in grants.

The Vilcek Foundation is a private operating foundation, a federally tax-exempt nonprofit organization under IRS Section 501(c)(3).

DES MOINES, Iowa, March 15, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The National Pork Board has teamed up with Mexican TV personality Karla Martínez to launch Menú Urbano FRESH, a campaign to help Latinos discover ways to recreate and enjoy authentic street-food dishes in a nutritious way without sacrificing what consumers love most about pork: its flavor.

“I’m thrilled and honored to be part of this effort, not only to keep Hispanic traditions alive through cooking but also to show consumers how pork is good for them and their families,” said Martínez, a co-host in the popular morning show Despierta America on Univision. “Food is one of the primary ways Latinos celebrate and share our culture with family and friends. Every day, we are becoming more conscious of the dishes we cook and serve at our family’s tables.”

The campaign is a continuation of the original Menú Urbano campaign that launched in late 2020 to find the best street food pork dishes in select cities in the U.S. Menú Urbano FRESH will re-imagine those same dishes but with a nutritious twist.

“With pork, consumers don’t have to give up flavor to eat a nutritious meal, and that’s exactly what this campaign is all about,” said Jose de Jesus, senior director of multicultural marketing at the National Pork Board. “Our goal is to ensure Latinos are confident that with pork, the possibilities are endless, and you can enjoy a nutritious, flavorful and authentic meal.”

Menú Urbano FRESH is launching just in time to celebrate National Nutrition Month. Along with Martínez, the National Pork Board is also collaborating with three influential Latina content creators. They will provide tips and swaps for recreating popular street-food dishes into mouth-watering, nutritious dishes made with fresh pork cuts and ingredients that are ideal for families to prepare and enjoy at home.

Menú Urbano FRESH partners include:

  • Chef Mia Castro, a Puerto Rican chef and former participant at Food Network’s hit show Chopped, and Fox TV’s Hell’s Kitchen based in New York
  • Natalia Saenz, a Colombian health and wellness and lifestyle content creator based in Miami, FL
  • Pamela Berrondo, a Mexican, certified Holistic Nutritionist based in San Francisco, CA

According to NPB proprietary research, 79% of Hispanics cook meals to retain a connection to their native culture and 62% say they prefer food that reminds them of their family’s tradition. In addition, 62% of Latinos agree that “healthy means fresh to me.” Although there are different versions of a typical meal within each culture, one thing that remains constant in Hispanic cuisine is pork.

“Pork has been a staple in Hispanic kitchens throughout generations. And today, pork is 16% leaner and 27% lower in saturated fat compared to about 20 years ago, thanks to the pork industry’s response to consumers’ desire for lean pork products,” de Jesus said.

A study conducted by the National Pork Board revealed that pork is a nutrient-rich and high-quality protein that is packed with flavor, making it the ideal protein for any meal. Additionally, pork is a very accessible protein that lends itself to a variety of cooking methods using traditional Hispanic ingredients found all over Hispanic markets across the country, including fresh vegetables and fresh fruit-based sauces, spices such as habanero, ají amarillo, and chipotle, as well as sauces such as Mojo Criollo and Guava.

Traditional recipes from Latin American street-food cuisine that have been revamped with a nutritional twist for this campaign include Tacos de Lechuga con Cerdo y Salsa de Mango, Tostadas de Cerdo al Chipotle and Cachapa de Cerdo Adobada en Cítricos, y Salsa Guasacaca.
