“Rising to overcome the challenges of COVID, this year’s summit was an exciting success,” said Richard Zaldivar, Board Chair of Alcohol Justice. “CAPA has developed an intersectional approach to alcohol policy that has earned the respect of public health and safety-minded activists and lawmakers throughout California. We look forward to supporting CAPA’s continuing participation in crafting public policy that places community health and safety over alcohol industry profits.”

#CAPASummit2020 was spread over three successive Fridays that began on November 6th.  In addition to participating in the virtual sessions, CAPA attendees were acknowledged in inspirational video messages by California State Assemblymember Tom Lackey and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer.

“It’s important that we have thoughtful conversations about the potential impact alcohol can have on our health and our communities,” stated California State Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez. “I applaud CAPA for being a unified voice for diverse organizations in California that want to prevent substance abuse and other alcohol-related harm through statewide action.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that public health needs to be reevaluated to provide fair access to all, especially for low earning communities and communities of color,” said California State Assemblymember Monique Limón. “A pandemic of this magnitude comes with many risks and concerns beyond the virus. Losing a loved one, a job, and not interacting with those around you can be very difficult, and for many, it is challenging to seek help. I applaud CAPA for having conversations about the risk of alcohol abuse during these times and interconnecting social justice with public health as we continue seeing the need for improvement in our system.”

“Even though COVID made it impossible to come together physically with activists from throughout the state, we were still able to celebrate past CAPA victories and plan new strategies,”  stated Gilbert Mora, Co-Chair of CAPA. “The virtual turnout produced unexpected moments of deep insight and inspiration. CAPA is ready to move forward with confidence and strength to demand social justice in public health in California.”

CAPA Mission:
The California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA) shall unite diverse organizations and communities in California to protect health and safety, and prevent alcohol-related harm through statewide action.

CAPA Platform:
Current core issues leading to specific advocacy and policy change action items.

  • Raise the price of alcohol through taxes and fees, supporting the “Charge for Harm” concept that the industry should pay for treatment, prevention and all other costs to government.
  • Limit alcohol advertising in all media, especially on government-controlled property and where children or targeted populations are exposed.
  • Make the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control effective, efficient, transparent, and accountable to public health and safety concerns of the community, and not to cater to industry profits and license expediency, through policies that reduce alcohol outlet density and increase funding for alcohol control, regulation, and enforcement.
  • Eliminate product lines (such as alcopops and malt liquors) oriented to underage youth and vulnerable or targeted populations.
  • Reduce the allowable blood alcohol content for drivers as “Point .05 Saves Lives”
  • Improve labelling and out-of-home advertising of all alcohol products to ensure a) no marketing to youth, b) no indications of unsubstantiated health claims, c) display of alcohol content by volume and percentage and d) display of harms.

Fundación para la Democracia Panamericana: Two young artists have been condemned to death in Cuba; the only way to save them is to obtain the release of the wrongfully convicted musician Denis Solís

Fundacion para la democracia panamericana

MIAMI, Nov. 24, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — A healthy adult can live a maximum of five – at most, seven – days without drinking water under normal conditions. The bodies of Maykel and Luis Manuel are deteriorating at an alarming rate, traces of blood in their urine warn of imminent kidney complications. Doctors warn that multiorgan failure could occur at any time.

Fundacion para la democracia panamericana

Yesterday, at 3:00 PM, marked the 6th day of the hunger and thirst strike that Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel Castillo have maintained from their humble home, in the San Isidro neighborhood of Old Havana. They are demanding the release of 32-year-old Cuban rapper Denis Solís, who was arrested, tried and convicted within 48 hours for ordering a policeman to leave his home after he broke in without permission.

“We are running out of time” said activist and Morris Abram Award recipient Rosa María Payá.

“We have directly requested, and reiterate, our call to the Foreign Action Service of the European Union – which is in the process of dialogue with the Cuban dictatorship – to the ministers of the European Union and the Parliament; to the governments of the Americas; the Catholic Church and the Christian churches in Cuba; the International Red Cross, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet; and His Holiness Pope Francis; so that they intervene before the government in Cuba in favor of the immediate release of rapper Denis Solís and to save the lives of those on strike.”

She went on to say, “The imprisonment of Denis Solís is incompatible with the lives of Luis Manuel and Maykel. It is a basic humanitarian issue. The authorities in Cuba can release Denis Solís on house arrest and send him home now. They can avoid the death of young artists, while clarifying the legal situation of Denis, whose incarceration has been riddled by obvious violations of due process.”

The faces of the 14 people who, in solidarity with Denis, have been subject to a police blockade in the little house of San Isidro since November 16, resemble the faces of all Cubans. Among them are artists, academics, activists, journalists, self-employed workers, scientists —  all children of a broken Cuba that they, as many, refuse to lose.” The siege, maintained by the political police, has prevented representatives of the Catholic church from offering them previously requested religious assistance. As a result, the regime is also in violation of the right of Cuban religious personnel to protect life.

The regime has also prohibited family and friends from giving supplies to those who are not on a hunger strike, and they have banned all the representatives of the diplomatic corps who have wished to examine the status of the strikers. However, at dawn on the fourth day of the strike, an aggressor whom the political police sent and allowed to pass through the barred area, approached the door of the San Isidro residence with a hammer and broke a bottle on the head of artist Luis Manuel Otero. He remains in the house and has yet to receive any medical attention.

The decision to initiate a hunger and thirst strike is the culmination of the extreme situation they are experiencing. These young victims are not alone in being subjected to some of the most brutal harassment and police violence; the citizenry of Cuba is also and is a society that has run out of vital options.

Cuba is in the midst of a humanitarian crisis, caused by the regime, that has only been heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been further exacerbated by the regime’s unwillingness to release humanitarian assistance sent by Cubans in exile though churches to the some of its most needy citizens.

Colombia Launches The Strategy “VISIT HOME, YOUR BEST DESTINATION”

0

MIAMI, Nov. 24, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — In order to reactivate international tourism in Colombia, ProColombia has launched “VISIT HOME, YOUR BEST DESTINATION,” which invites Colombians living abroad to return to their places of origin, take in the flavors and rhythms that trigger childhood memories, and also learn more about the destinations and experiences in Colombia that are part of their identity.

This campaign is part of a larger strategy to reactivate international tourism, which has four main objectives: to restore air, sea, and land connectivity; to provide tools to businesspeople; to promote and strengthen partnerships and synergies; and to carry out promotional activities in accordance with the reactivation phases.

This strategy is expected to encourage Colombians living abroad, including second and third generations, to travel within Colombia—and to invite their foreign friends, fellow students, and colleagues to visit the country as well.

The objective is for travelers to engage in several unique experiences in Colombia. These include exploring the country’s wildest side in the Serranía de Chiribiquete National Park, visiting one of Colombia’s four deserts, such as the Tatacoa Desert, enjoying rejuvenating urban landscapes in big cities such as Medellín, Cali, and Bogotá, and perhaps discovering earthly paradises like Minca, near Santa Marta.

“In our efforts to advance Colombia’s economic recovery, we must work hand in hand with Colombians living abroad, since they are the first group traveling to Colombia to reunite with their loved ones. Additionally, as the best ambassadors that Colombia can have abroad, we hope that this group will spread the word and invite others to enjoy everything that Colombia has to offer as a destination,” stated Flavia Santoro, president of ProColombia.

The first step will be a social media campaign that invites Colombians living abroad to travel in Colombia with the message: “VISIT HOME, YOUR BEST DESTINATION” using the #ColombiaTuMejorDestino hashtag.

‘Tis The Season of Giving – 6 ways you can give back on Facebook this holiday season

0

MENLO PARK, Calif., Nov. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — This year has been difficult for everyone – but one silver lining is the compassion and generosity so many have shown in supporting their loved ones, causes and communities.

Experience the interactive Multimedia News Release here: https://www.multivu.com/players/English/8677051-facebook-season-of-giving/

This holiday season in particular, many of us are thinking about how we can give something back – whether it’s time, talent or a simple act of kindness. Today, Facebook is kicking off Season of Giving, a campaign encouraging people to give however they can. Here are some ideas and new ways to get involved:

Start a fundraiser on GivingTuesday (December 1)
More than one million nonprofits can fundraise using Facebook’s Fundraising tools. Start a fundraiser of your own or share or donate to an existing one for a cause you care about on GivingTuesday, or anytime this holiday season. This year, Facebook will match up to $7 million in qualifying donations made to US nonprofits beginning at 8AM EST on GivingTuesday. See Facebook’s full terms and GivingTuesday Help Page to learn more.

On Instagram, donation stickers have long been a popular way to share important causes, and Instagram recently rolled out Live fundraisers and personal fundraisers as well. Every dollar counts, so as always, 100% of what’s raised for nonprofits on Facebook and Instagram will go directly to organizations.

Create or donate to a holiday drive
With many people out of work and food insecurity affecting nearly 1 in 3 people in the US due to Covid-19 (according to a recent survey conducted on Facebook), people are relying on the generosity of others now more than ever. In the US, Facebook is launching Drives, a new feature in Community Help that makes it easier for people and organizations to collect food, clothes and other essential items to donate to people in need. Drives is starting to roll out now and will be available more widely in the coming weeks. To create a drive and start giving to your community, type “Community Help” into your Facebook search bar and follow the shortcut.

Support Black-owned businesses
Black-owned businesses have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic. You can help support Black-owned businesses when you shop from The Facebook #BuyBlack Friday Gift Guide in the US. The guide is curated with the help of the US Black Chambers and leading voices in the Black community. Encourage your community to post and tag their favorite Black-owned business on Facebook with #BuyBlackChallenge. Visit the Lift Black Voices Hub for more information.

Donate blood
Every two seconds, someone in the US needs blood. Connect with your local blood bank on Facebook to receive updates for opportunities to donate blood in your community.

Watch, listen & donate
Tune in to Peace Through Music: A Global Event For Social Justice premiering exclusively on Facebook Live and the Facebook App Page on December 1 at 3PM EST. The star-studded fundraising event, in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations, features performances and appearances by Aloe Blacc, Billie Eilish, Becky G, Carlos Santana & Cindy Blackman Santana, Killer Mike, Ringo Starr, Skip Marley and many more. Viewers can donate to Peace Through Music’s Facebook Fundraiser, which will support the Playing for Change Foundation—an organization that creates positive change in underserved communities around the world through music and arts education — the United Nations Population Fund, Sankofa, Silkroad and The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.

You can also check out Mike Rowe’sReturning The Favor” on GivingTuesday for a special episode featuring Dawod Thomas, founder of My Father’s Plan, a Baltimore-based nonprofit that helps inner city youth through community activism, financial literacy and community outreach. Viewers who tune in can donate to support their work.

Reconnect with friends
According to Aspen Institute younger adults, people who live alone and people who have gone through major life events are more likely to experience loneliness before and during Covid-19. Connect with old friends and invite them to a virtual holiday party in Messenger Rooms or watch your favorite classic movie together on Watch Together in a Room or Messenger video call.

So this Season of Giving join us in celebrating people who are giving to their communities in inspiring ways, and get inspired yourself by visiting Facebook’s Community Home Page. After all, even a small act of kindness can make a big difference to someone.

New COVID-19 Vaccine Unit Opens at Montefiore and Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Montefiore

BRONX, N.Y., Nov. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today, Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine opened the doors to its new COVID-19 vaccine unit, which will enroll people in clinical trials that will test the efficacy of vaccines against the novel coronavirus. The unit is led by Barry Zingman, MD, professor of medicine at Einstein and clinical director, infectious diseases, at the Moses division of Montefiore Health System.

Montefiore

The vaccine unit opening comes as global coronavirus infections are rising sharply, with nearly 200,000 cases reported daily in the United States. Montefiore’s goal is to ensure more than half of all trial participants are adults most affected by COVID-19 with a focus on people older than 65. Across the country, older individuals and communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.

“Montefiore and Einstein have a legacy of providing inclusive access to cutting edge care,” said Andrew D. Racine, M.D., Ph.D., system senior vice president and chief medical officer at Montefiore and professor of pediatrics at Einstein. “By ensuring that historically underrepresented patients are included in COVID-19 vaccination research, this effort will help ensure the efficacy and safety of vaccines for these underrepresented patient groups.”

The new vaccine unit builds on Montefiore and Einstein’s leadership conducting COVID-19 trials and providing lifesaving clinical care to thousands of people in the community and has already started enrolling people in the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine AZD1222 trial. Dr. Zingman is the principal investigator at Montefiore for the vaccine, which is one of 13 COVID-19 vaccines in phase III trials and the first to be evaluated at Montefiore and Einstein. He was also the principal investigator at Montefiore and Einstein for the ACTT-1 and ACTT-2 National Institutes of Health trials, which evaluated remdesivir (now FDA-approved as a treatment for people hospitalized with COVID-19) and remdesivir plus baricitinib, respectively.

Since March, physician-scientists at Montefiore and Einstein have studied COVID-19’s impact on almost every major health condition, ranging from asthma to cancer; examined health inequities in local communities; and helped determine which treatments work best against COVID-19.

Among its notable research, Montefiore and Einstein faculty:

–  Published the first major U.S. study on the use of steroids, which confirmed the findings of the large-scale British RECOVERY trial showing that steroids are effective in treating COVID-19; the study also revealed which patients can be harmed by steroids

–  Led the first-ever study comparing the immune responses of adults and children with COVID-19 and detected key differences that may explain why children have milder disease than adults

–  Led the development of a monoclonal antibody therapy to neutralize COVID-19—and potentially other emerging coronaviruses—clinical trials will begin in December

–  Created a blood test for detecting COVID-19 antibodies, used clinically and for research

–  Launched the first randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial of convalescent plasma with NYU Langone Medicine Center, which has expanded to include the University of Miami and the University of Texas-Houston, among other locations across the country

–  Was the first New York City medical center to enroll participants in the ACTT-1 remdesivir trial and the second highest enrolling site worldwide

–  Will offer the first randomized controlled trial of dexamethasone versus baricitinib (NIAID ACTT-4 study) for the hyperinflammatory state in COVID-19

“Words cannot express my appreciation for the many people who worked so hard to establish the new COVID-19 vaccine unit, making sure underrepresented communities will have access to the most promising protection from COVID-19,” said Dr. Zingman. “To the healthcare providers and investigators who enthusiastically joined the effort and to the people who are coming in to participate in these critically important trials, we thank you for your role in helping the world end this pandemic.”

The AstraZeneca/University of Oxford vaccine is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded trial in which two people will get the vaccine for each person who receives a placebo injection. Two injections will be given during the first 29 days.

An independent analysis of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine found it successfully provoked a powerful immune response against COVID-19. The study will not include people previously diagnosed with COVID-19, people whose immune systems are suppressed due to disease or medications, people with cancer, people who are pregnant or nursing, and anyone under age 18.

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Nov. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — For nearly two decades, Angela’s Bakery has been a New York institution. This family-run business has been satisfying sweet palates with all the typical bakery staples and favorites, but it’s their traditional Dominican cake that’s made them a household name. Now, after much demand, and in an effort to provide this authentic and well-loved dessert to those just around the corner as well as those across the country, Angela’s Bakery is launching their NEW Dominican Cake Mix for online purchase.

Whether you’ve ever tried it for yourself or heard about it through the grapevine, Dominican cake is one of the island’s most cherished exports. Characterized by its moist and airy texture, and meringue frosting, this is the traditional cake that you’ll find at any Dominican celebration, and variations from this cake have gained huge popularity over the years and across the continent. Given its versatility and mass appeal, and with the holidays approaching and consumers looking for new dessert alternatives, Angela’s Bakery decided to make their beloved sweet treat accessible to all.

“For more than 18 years, my family and I have been sharing this Dominican dessert with our loyal storefront customers, adding a little bit of our ancestry and Caribbean flavor to all types of celebrations, and after such a challenging year and people looking for new experiences and flavors, this is our way of bringing our bizcocho dominicano and our island to you,” said Rosangela Rosario, Founder and CEO, Angela’s Dominican Cake Mix Corporation.

Incorporating e-commerce into the business was a natural progression for Angela’s Bakery as a response to the current health crisis and the limitations on connecting with customers in person. The company developed a partnership with ‘Together We Win‘ (TWW), a purpose-driven movement that helps Black and Latino-owned SMBs struggling through the COVID-19 pandemic by supporting fundamental business needs. Allowing customers to shop online has given the bakery the chance to continue serving their loyal fanbase while also reaching customers in other parts of the country.

Available in both vanilla and chocolate varieties, Angela’s Bakery Dominican Cake Mix is available exclusively online and there is a limited-time offer for holiday bundle orders placed.
