AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 23, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — International homebuyer activity added $7.8 billion to the Texas economy from April 2018 to March 2019, according to the Texas International Homebuyers Report released today by Texas Realtors.

Texas Association of Realtors logo.

Texas ranked third in the nation for homes sold to international buyers, behind Florida and California. Texas accounted for 10% of all homes purchased by international homebuyers in the United States, with 18,310 home sales out of 183,100 nationwide. The U.S. saw a 31% decrease in the number of foreign buyer purchases compared to the last reporting period.

Texas was particularly popular with buyers from Mexico and India. Of all homebuyers from Mexico, 28% purchased a home in Texas. The next closest state, California, had 10% of the total homebuyers from Mexico. Among buyers from India, 13% chose Texas—just behind first-place Florida, with 14%.

On the commercial side of real estate, Texas is the third-most popular destination for buyers who work with Realtors, according to the 2019 Commercial Real Estate International Business Trends report from the National Association of Realtors. Dallas was the fifth-most popular U.S. market for commercial real estate purchased by international buyers with a dollar volume of $2.9 billion, and Houston was ninth at $2.2 billion.

Texas is seen as a solid state for investments due to our strong economy, business environment and large metropolitan areas,” said Tray Bates, chairman of Texas Realtors. “Investors are interested in residential and commercial real estate in Texas where they can deploy their resources to make an attractive return. Specifically, we’re seeing international investors look to Texas for large-scale investments in subdivisions and master planned communities.”

Early in 2019, delegates from Texas Realtors traveled to the leading international real estate development conference, Le marché international des professionnels de l’immobilier (MIPIM), in Cannes, France to meet with international real estate investors and showcase Texas’ attractive investment climate.

“One of the key learnings we brought home from MIPIM was the increasingly diversified interest in both residential and commercial real estate in Texas,” said Hanne Sagalowsky, a Realtor from Dallas and the National Association of Realtors Coordinator to Western Europe, Israel and Turkey. “With this increased foreign interest, we want international homebuyers eyeing Texas to know that Realtors can help them navigate common issues such as taxes and currency conversion to successfully complete their real estate transaction.”

Bates concluded, “The world continues to see Texas as a strong environment for international real estate investment opportunities. Whether international buyers are seeking to purchase large-scale properties or single-family homes, they can count on Texas Realtors to help them find the right home or property.”

One in five people in Latin America and the Caribbean experiences sexual extortion, or knows someone who has, survey says

Bribery_rates_by_country_GCB_2019_LAC_Infographic

BERLIN, Sept. 23, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — A new report from Transparency International reveals that more than half of all citizens in 18 Latin American and Caribbean countries think corruption is getting worse in their country and governments aren’t doing enough to tackle it. Corruption is a major concern for ordinary people; 85 per cent of those surveyed believe government corruption is “a big problem”.

Read the report

The report, entitled, Global Corruption Barometer (GCB) — Latin America and the Caribbean, for the first time shows one in five people experiences sexual extortion when accessing a government service, like health care or education, or knows someone who has.

Data also shows that 71 per cent of people think that sextortion happens at least occasionally.

Equally troubling, one in four people was offered a bribe in exchange for votes at national, regional or local elections in the past five years. In a damning indictment of low trust in government, 65 per cent think their government is run by and for a few private interests.

These alarming statistics underscore the disproportionate effect that corruption has on women, and suggests a significant lack of political integrity among government leaders. The office of the President and Prime Minister, as well as Members of Parliament, are seen as the most corrupt group or institution by 53 and 52 per cent of people respectively.

“Too often, presidents, parliamentarians and other political leaders act in their own self-interest, at the expense of the citizens they serve,” said Delia Ferreira Rubio, Chair of Transparency International. “In a region where anti-corruption efforts are building momentum despite recent setbacks, citizens continue to demand more and better from their governments.”

People’s actual experience with bribery is similarly concerning. More than one in five people who access public services, have to pay a bribe. This is equivalent to approximately 56 million citizens.

Across the region, police earn the highest bribery rate (24 per cent), while other services like utilities, including electricity and water, are close behind (19 per cent).

Despite these challenges, an overwhelming majority of people remain hopeful. Seventy-seven per cent believe ordinary citizens can make a difference in the fight against corruption.

“Citizens have the right to report corruption and expect that politicians act with integrity,” said Patricia Moreira, Managing Director of Transparency International. “Corruption eats away at society and undermines institutions. Political leaders need to listen to the clear demands of citizens to tackle corruption and strengthen democracy.”

Transparency International recommends political leaders take the following actions:

  • Recognise and address specific gendered forms of corruption, including with gender-sensitive reporting mechanisms.
  • Strengthen integrity of elections and enforce sanctions against vote-buying, with transparent campaign finance and support for fact-based journalism.
  • Empower individuals, civil society and media to report corruption, including with comprehensive legislation to protect whistleblowers.
  • Implement the Lima Commitment, including publicly reporting on progress since the VIII Summit of the Americas.

Herta, Honda Win Monterey Season Finale, Manufacturers’ Title

0
Honda’s Colton Herta (#88) leads the field into the first turn of today’s season-ending NTT IndyCar Series event at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Herta went on to score his second win of the season, and Honda won the Manufacturers’ Championship for the second successive season.

MONTEREY, California, Sept. 22, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Rookie standout Colton Herta led 83 of 90 laps in today’s season-ending Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey to earn his second NTT IndyCar Series victory of 2019, and the eighth win of the year for Honda, which claimed its second consecutive Manufacturers’ Championship over season-long rival Chevrolet.

Starting from the pole, Herta led throughout the day, but was pursued for the duration of the 90-lap contest by a series of rivals, including fellow Honda driver Scott Dixon, championship contender Simon Pagenaud and eventual second-place finisher Will Power.  Power provided the strongest challenge to Herta following the final round of pit stops around Lap 65, but the rookie proved up to the task, and held on to take the victory by just over a half second at the checkers.

Just over six seconds behind the lead pair, five-time series champion Dixon battled with Pagenaud throughout the final 25 laps, edging his rival at the finish by 11 one-hundredths of a second to finish third and help secure the Manufacturers’ Championship for Honda by 49 points [1436-1387].  The title is the eighth for Honda in IndyCar Series racing with multi-manufacturer competition, and its second in succession.

Although Herta won twice this season – his first victory coming at Circuit of the Americas in March – Felix Rosenqvist capped his own year of consistent high finishes with a fifth-place result today to claim Rookie of the Year honors.  Rosenqvist had six top-five results this season, including second-place finishes at Mid-Ohio and Portland.

Next
Sunday’s race concludes the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series.  The 2020 season gets underway on March 15 with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Quotes
Colton Herta (Harding Steinbrenner Racing Honda) Started first, finished first, second race win of 2019 in his rookie IndyCar Series season: “It was a tough race. I was either getting hounded by Dixon, or Pagenaud, or Power the whole time, so they definitely didn’t make it easy on me. But yeah, happy to kind of put together what we had in Portland and learn from our mistakes of the tire-wear issues and go forward with it. Whenever you win an IndyCar race, it has to be a perfect race. You can’t really make mistakes and get away with it, just because there’s always two or three other guys on that day that can win. For sure, there were a few guys that could win today, and we just outdid them. We had the pace on them, and we were definitely the best today, so we definitely deserved to win.”

Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) Started second, finished third to clinch Honda’s eighth IndyCar Series Manufacturers’ Championship: “The car was by far better on the ‘Red’ [alternate, softer compound] Firestone tires than the black primaries. There was a ton of tire degradation, and it kind of threw us for a loop. It’s a great result for [primary sponsor] PNC Bank; great for Honda winning the Manufacturer title; and great for [teammate] Felix [Rosenqvist] for the Rookie title. It was a hard-fought battle with Simon [Pagenaud] at the end, and I hope it was a good show as we haven’t been back at Laguna Seca for some time.”

Alexander Rossi (Andretti Autosport Honda) Started third, finished sixth, third in the Drivers’ Championship: “I think the ‘blacks’ [harder compound primary tires] were much friendlier for us, which was unfortunate because we started on the used [softer compound] ‘reds’. We made the decision to go opposite of the two cars in front at the start because we knew we were ultimately racing them.  We took a gamble. We were pretty committed to trying to do something different, and if we ended up third swinging, it was better than just being complacent and coming home second.  It was a risk that didn’t pay off, unfortunately, but yeah, it was — it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Felix Rosenqvist (Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) Started 14th, finished fifth, won 2019 IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year honors:  “Today was exciting, with [fellow rookie] Colton [Herta] starting P1 and us in 14th for the Rookie battle. He led almost every lap. We managed to pass a ton of cars and executed perfectly. It’s well-deserved for all the NTT DATA guys on a season-long effort. I think I used a lot of anger from yesterday to move forward [in the race]. It was a great way to finish the season and I can’t wait until next year with this team.”

Ted Klaus (President, Honda Performance Development) on Honda’s championship-winning 2019 IndyCar Series season, second consecutive Manufacturers’ Championship for Honda and eighth in IndyCar Series competition: “This award is shared equally by all of our associates at Honda Performance Development. It is through their unstinting efforts that we now get to share this award with them.  I also want to thank all of our partner teams, each of which contributed to our successful title defense.  A win today from our youngest driver, and newest team, helps demonstrate the overall depth of the Honda Racing effort and bodes well for the future.  We were fortunate to have multiple promising rookies as part of our IndyCar program this year, so congratulations to Felix Rosenqvist for becoming Rookie of the Year.  Thanks to Alexander Rossi and Scott Dixon for again taking the title chase down to the final race of the season, and to all of our drivers for their commitment to excellence.”

Herta Leads Honda Sweep Indy Car Qualifying In Monterey

0
IndyCar Series rookie sensation Colton Herta captured his third pole of the season Saturday in qualifying at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for Sunday’s season-finale race.

MONTEREY, Calif., Sept. 21, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — NTT IndyCar Series rookie standout Colton Herta edged five-time series champion Scott Dixon to claim the pole today for Sunday’s season-ending Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey.  In an exciting final round of knockout qualifying, Herta’s last lap time of 1:10.1405 bettered Dixon’s best effort by just over four one-hundredths of a second.  Today’s run is the third pole of the season for Herta, and the eighth of the 2019 season for Honda.

IndyCar Series rookie sensation Colton Herta captured his third pole of the season Saturday in qualifying at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for Sunday’s season-finale race.

Dixon will start on the outside of the front row, second, as the Chip Ganassi Racing driver maintains an outside shot at claiming his sixth series championship in tomorrow’s 90-lap contest.  Primary championship contenders Alexander Rossi and Josef Newgarden will start third and fourth, respectively.  Advancing to the “Fast Six” final qualifying round for the third time this season, James Hinchcliffe qualified fifth in his Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda; while the fourth and final championship contender, Simon Pagenaud, will start sixth.

Heading into tomorrow’s season finale, Honda holds a 34-point advantage over Chevrolet in the battle for the 2019 Manufacturers’ Championship (1351-1317).  In the Drivers’ Championship fight, Rossi trails Newgarden by 41 points (593-552).  Pagenaud lies third with 551 points, while Dixon rounds out the title hopefuls with 508 points.  This weekend’s season-finale race is a “double-points” event, with 100 points awarded for a race win rather than the usual 50.

Television coverage of the final round of the 2019 season begins at 2:30 p.m. EDT Sunday on NBC.

Colton Herta (Harding Steinbrenner Racing Honda) Pole qualifier, third pole of 2019 in his rookie IndyCar Series season: “This team has been great all weekend, and the car is phenomenal.  We’ve had such good pace.  It seems like we’ve made some real gains in recent weeks, both on the team side and my side.  At the start of the year, I was hoping to be in this position by the end of the season – fighting for top six starting positions.  Once you know you can do it [qualify on the pole] it kind of relieves a lot of the stress.  You know you can make the fast six [final qualifying] and will be really disappointed if you don’t.  I’m really looking forward to the start of the race tomorrow from the best seat in the house!”
