TORRANCE, California, Aug. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Three generations of Acura Motorsports prototype race cars and two generations of Acura drivers will be on hand Aug. 15-18 for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Acura participation salutes its race- and championship-winning heritage in IMSA competition.

The original artwork by Dave Marek, Acura Executive Creative Director, Honda R&D Americas, Inc., highlights Acura’s racing heritage in IMSA. Inspired by this year’s Monterey Motorsports Reunion where both the Spice Car and the current ARX-05 will be on track together, the ARX-05 DPi car wears a livery inspired by the Spice Car. The artwork was created using the mixed medium of a 3-D design program, hand drawing and an image manipulation program.

A highlight of the event weekend for Acura will be a demonstration run at 12:35 PM on Saturday, Aug. 17, including the 1991-93 IMSA championship-winning, first-generation Comptech Spice Acura GTP Lights prototypes, with their original drivers at the controls, three-time champion Parker Johnstone, Dan Marvin and Wayne Taylor.  Joining them on track will be Wayne’s son and current Acura Team Penske driver, Ricky Taylor, driving his race-winning Acura ARX-05 DPi.

“Our outstanding success in IMSA in the 1990s paved the way toward establishing Acura as a performance brand and has served as a proof point for Precision Crafted Performance,” said Jon Ikeda, Acura vice president and brand officer.  “Acura was very much a ‘new kid on the block’ when we began endurance sports car racing and it will be a genuine thrill to watch these historic first-generation cars on track with our contemporary race machines.”

Acura Racing Heritage

Acura entered the IMSA Camel GT Championship in 1991 with Comptech fielding a single Spice Acura, powered by a race-prepared version of the 3.0-liter Acura NSX engine, with Johnstone as the primary driver.  The combination was immediately successful, winning the Camel Lights class in its debut at the 1991 24 Hours of Daytona.  Steve Cameron, uncle of current Acura Team Penske driver Dane Cameron, was part of the driver lineup at Daytona.

Acura, Comptech and Johnstone would go on to claim IMSA Camel Lights victories in eight of the 14 races that season, winning the first of three successive IMSA Camel Lights Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ championships for Acura and Johnstone.

Eight more victories in 1992 included a repeat win at Daytona – with future IndyCar Champion Jimmy Vasser joining Johnstone and Cameron in the driver lineup – while Acura claimed 10 wins in 11 races to complete an incredible three-season run of IMSA Camel Lights titles in 1993.

Both Taylor and Marvin were drivers during the Comptech Acura program.  Marvin featured as co-driver to Johnstone throughout both the 1992 and ’93 seasons, while Taylor drove a second Comptech Acura in several races in 1992 with co-driver Ruggero Melgrati, winning the IMSA Laguna Seca race that season.

Both the original Comptech Spice Acura, driven by Johnstone, and the Spice Acura SE91P, campaigned by veteran racer Taz Harvey, also will be competing throughout the weekend in the “IMSA Prototype” Race Group 7, as the Monterey Reunion weekend celebrates the sanctioning body’s 50th anniversary as the featured marque of this year’s event.

In addition to the original and latest Acura IMSA prototypes, a trio of the highly successful “second generation” line of Acura ARX machines also will be on display at the Reunion.  They include the Andretti Autosport Acura ARX-01a, LMP2 class winner in its competition debut at the 2007 Mobil-1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Acura’s first LMP1 contenders, the Patron Highcroft Racing and De Ferran Motorsports ARX-02a prototypes, also will be on display during the Reunion weekend as raced in the 2009 American Le Mans Championship (ALMS).  The teams combined to win eight of 10 ALMS races that season, with Acura sweeping the LMP1 championship and the Highcroft pairing of David Brabham and Scott Sharp claiming the drivers’ title by 17 points over owner/driver Gil de Ferran and co-driver Simon Pagenaud.

2019 Acura Motorsports on Display

The Acura prototype display at Monterey will be completed by both the Acura Team Penske ARX-05 show car, and the race-winning #7 Acura ARX-05 race car, using a production-based Acura V6 powerplant, campaigned in 2018 and this season by Ricky Taylor and Helio Castroneves.  The pairing scored Acura’s first current-era prototype race victory last year at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and have three podium finishes this season as their contribution to Acura’s lead in the 2019 DPi Manufacturers’ Championship.  Acura Team Penske teammates Dane Cameron and Juan Pablo Montoya lead the drivers’ title points battle after eight of 10 events.

The Acura NSX GT3 Evo, currently leading the 2019 IMSA GTD manufacturers’ and drivers’ championships, will be on display at WeatherTech Raceway featuring a custom-designed yellow and blue livery over exposed carbon fiber.  The GT3 machine, alongside a production Acura NSX in the new-for-2020 Yellow Pearl paint color – a modern interpretation of the first-generation NSX Spa Yellow, was on display at Concours on the Avenue in downtown Carmel and both will also be at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club on Friday, August 16 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Carrying the Cuban flag on your shoulders could take you to jail in Cuba

0

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/– Cuban independent artists have launched a challenge #TheFlagBelongsTo All” (#LaBanderaEsDeTodos) to counter the government’s latest form of censorship, which prohibits Cubans from wearing the national flag as a sign of political protest. After the Cuban government’s recent escalation of repression–including the forced disappearance of artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara–supporting artists of the San Isidro Movement have heralded a call to action to challenge the government’s new restrictions relating to the use of national symbols.

Prominent Cuban activists are already facing prosecution under a  new law, which has not even officially gone into effect. In Cuba, even after laws are passed by the national legislature, they are technically not enforceable until the public is put on notice in the Official Gazette for the Republic of Cuba. Although the law at issue has not yet been published, Cuban police have been unlawfully enforcing the law, making illegal arrests.

Cuban artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara was arrested August 10 in Havana, and has remained in detention for more than 48 hours, according to the news website, ADN Cuba.

The reported cause of Otero’s arrest was his decision to carry a Cuban flag on his shoulders in public as part of a performance entitled “Drapeau.”

“The national symbols belong to the body of the nation. They cannot and will not be able to ration them according to selfish interests of indoctrinating and monopolizing the thinking of Cubans,” the San Isidro Movement explained in a statement.

The new law was passed earlier this year purportedly to “protect national symbols”, including new regulations including the use of the Cuban flag. Cuban citizens can still carry Cuban flags at public events and hang them in their homes.

It is a quintessential example of the government’s draconian approach to restricting citizens to voice their opinions through ‘expressive conduct.’

To contrast the distinctions between so-called civil liberties in Cuba and actual freedom in the United States, the Castro regime is prohibiting Cuban citizens from honoring its flag by wearing it whereas the U.S. safeguards the rights of Americans to destroy their flag as a sign of protest.

In 1989, the US Supreme Court ruled that burning the American flag was a protected form of free speech under the Constitution’s First Amendment.

The Court reaffirmed its ruling in 1990, in US v. Eichman after political artist and then Communist activist Shawn Eichman burned the American flag on the steps of the US Capitol in Washington, D.C.

In both cases, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that although burning the American flag offended some people, outlawing flag burning would violate the spirit of the freedom the flag stands for.

The Court also ruled that the simple physical destruction of a flag itself does not diminish or weaken the symbolic spirit for which the flag stands.

“What needs to be urgently analyzed today in national life is the alleged right of the Cuban government and the security organs to discriminate against the use of national symbols, born and forged long before their reactionary revolution, their totalitarian communist party, and the birth of their aged leaders,” said Michel Matos, producer and member of the San Isidro Movement.

With this, citizens would not be allowed to combine the use of the Cuban flag with a foreign flag; fold it in a way that prevents it from opening, use it in commercial advertising, show it torn or broken, add stamps, writings or signatures to the flag, or incorporate it into larger works. In addition, if the flag appears on clothing, it must be displayed on the front and cannot be part of pants, skirts, scarves, swimsuits or underwear.

This is not the first time that Otero Alcantara has been arrested for exercising his right to freedom of expression. On multiple occasions he has been arrested for his activism against Decree 349, which limits artistic manifestations.

In the name of free speech, ADN Cuba expresses its support for this campaign to shield the right of Cubans to express themselves freely and to celebrate diversity of ideas.

“As communicators, it is important we express our rejection to the Cuban government’s methods of  institutionalizing censorship through arbitrary detentions, decrees or control of artistic expression in all its forms. We want a decentralized country, a rule of law and no more totalitarianism. The Cuban people want to write their destiny,” said Yaima Pardo, Audiovisual Director of ADN Cuba.

For the Cuban government, there is a close link between symbols and ideology, so they control their use in public spaces.

“The government says that everything that is done indoors can be allowed, but not in public spaces,” explains Otero Alcantara, who believes that Cuba is approaching a critical  time in which  artists take possession of the symbols and expand even more criticism within permissible spaces.

In response to these repressive events, the San Isidro Movement has asked supporters to create photos and videos with the Cuban flag on their shoulders and publish them on the Internet with the hashtag #LaBanderaEsDeTodos. (The flag belongs to all)

The Movement also asks that Cuban flags be donated to the Museum of Dissidence in Cuba for its peaceful demonstrations and works of art since the group’s flags have been seized by the police, and the price of these on the island is inaccessible.

The flags can be delivered “between August, Monday 12 and Friday 16 on Damas 955 Street, in Old Havana (MAPI) between 2 PM and 6 PM. If you are located in Havana, but cannot deliver a flag personally  write to the following email address:
[email protected] and a team will be sent to collect the flag or a donation!

About The San Isidro Movement

The San Isidro Movement emerged on August 11, 2018 in the San Isidro neighborhood of Havana when a group of artists and activists were arrested following the “Without permission from 349” concert at the headquarters of the Museum of Dissidence in Cuba. Using extreme violence, state  police and security agents launched an  “operation” that assaulted the artists, who were meeting peacefully to express their opposition to Decree 349; a law that violates the  spirit  of island based autonomy, artistic freedom and expression, revealing its ultimate effect to be  a mere government strategy to systematize censorship.

Acura Type S Concept to Debut in Monterey – Brand’s Precision Crafted Performance Takes Shape

0
The Type S Concept sets the stage for re-introducing Type S performance variants to the Acura line-up after a decade hiatus, and will heavily influence the character of the upcoming, second-generation TLX Type S.

MONTEREY, California, Aug. 13, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Acura returns to Monterey Car Week, one of the world’s top gatherings of automotive and motorsports enthusiasts, to debut the Type S Concept. Following its world premiere at a private Acura reception Thursday, August 15, the Acura Type S Concept will publicly debut on Friday, August 16 at The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering. It will then be showcased at the historic Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Concept Lawn on Sunday, August 18.

The Type S Concept sets the stage for re-introducing Type S performance variants to the Acura line-up after a decade hiatus, and will heavily influence the character of the upcoming, second-generation TLX Type S.

Representing a fundamental step toward fulfilling Acura’s return to Precision Crafted Performance, which started with the debut of the second-generation NSX, the Type S Concept sets the stage for re-introducing Type S performance variants to the Acura line-up after a decade hiatus, and will heavily influence the character of the upcoming, second-generation TLX Type S.

The Acura design team set out to express the essence of Precision Crafted Performance through stance and proportion, crafting a silhouette that is powerful and expressive, yet clean and cohesive. Building on the foundational beauty and style of the Acura Precision Concept, the Type S Concept’s powerful form is characterized by a wide track and low stance, with an expansive hood that stretches forward from the A-pillars.

“The return of Type S is instrumental in our mission to return Acura to its performance roots,” said Jon Ikeda, Vice President and Acura Brand Officer. “From bringing back the NSX to winning at the highest level of North American sports car racing and ushering-in a new generation starting with the RDX, we are revitalizing Acura on the foundation of our original and authentic brand values, piece by piece.”

Performance at the Core

“We’ve been dreaming about a new performance-focused Acura concept car since the Precision Concept debuted,” said Dave Marek, Acura’s Executive Creative Director. “The Type S Concept speaks unambiguously to performance and to the essence of Acura design.”

The Type S Concept showcases new elements of Acura design including next-generation, four-lamp Jewel Eye® LED headlights, an open-surface Diamond Pentagon grille, and “Chicane” daytime running lights and taillights, both drawing inspiration from the Acura ARX-05 Daytona Prototype race car.

Refined Style Meets Raw Emotion

Building off its powerful stance, the Type S Concept’s front fascia reflects both form and function. Large center and side intakes are capable of supplying required airflow to a high-performance engine and brake package, with fascia detailing evolved from the NSX and Acura Precision Concept. The headlights are underscored, literally, by translucent white “Chicane” LEDs that serve double duty as running lights and turn signals.

The front fascia transitions to a side profile that communicates both power and elegance. Sheer surfaces and continually shifting angles are balanced by sharp, intersecting lines that create the impression that every surface is changing shape as it flows front to rear. Sheer side surfaces gradually open-up to muscular rear wheel arches, emphasizing the concept’s wide track.

A sharp and distinctive tail features an upswept decklid with a sharply creased centerline (drawn from the hood) and integrated forged carbon spoiler. “Chicane” LED taillights, a large rear diffuser and quad chrome exhaust outlets complete the look.

In addition to the rear decklid spoiler, forged carbon – created by bonding layers of carbon on top of one another to exceed the strength of traditional interwoven carbon – is applied to the front and rear splitters, side sills, rear decklid spoiler and multi-spoke 21-inch wheels.

A “square” 285-series summer tire setup ensures high levels of grip in the most dynamic of driving situations. All four corners feature drilled Brembo™ high-performance brakes with four-piston calipers, providing ample stopping power and an aggressive appearance.

The Concept’s bespoke “Double Apex Blue Pearl” paint reflects a liquid and electric hue that pays homage to blue Type S heritage models, including the acclaimed 2007-2008 TL Type S. “Double Apex Blue Pearl” employs Nano pigments and a color-infused clear coat that impart a sense of fluidity and motion, and enhance the paint’s luster and brilliance.

The Acura Type S Concept was conceived by the Acura Design Studio in California, led by executive creative director, Dave Marek, and chief designer, Ben Davidson and will be showcased throughout Monterey Car Week. After its private debut at an Acura hosted event Aug. 15, it will make its public debut at The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering on Aug. 16, with a press conference scheduled for 9:30 a.m. The Type S Concept will also be on display at the historic Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Aug. 18.

Acura Type S Heritage

A fundamental step in fulfilling the promise of Precision Crafted Performance, Acura will debut two Type S performance variants in the next two years, starting with the second-generation TLX Type S. Type S models will deliver a high performance driving experience with quicker acceleration, nimbler handling and stronger braking performance than conventional Acura models. From 2001 through 2008, four Type S models set the standard for Acura performance in North America:

  • 2001-2003 Acura 3.2CL Type S: The Type S performance line debuted with the 2001 Acura 3.2CL Type S. It featured a 3.2-liter V6 engine with 260 horsepower (upgraded from 225 hp), a 5-speed automatic with a manual shift function, quicker steering, 17-inch wheels and tires and a sport-tuned suspension. In its final model year, a 6-speed manual transmission was available.
  • 2002-2003 Acura 3.2TL Type S: Debuting a year after the 3.2CL Type S, the 3.2TL Type S featured the same performance-tuned engine and transmission, and similar suspension, wheel and tire upgrades. Unlike the 3.2CL Type S, the 3.2TL Type S was not available with a manual transmission.
  • 2002-2006 Acura RSX Type S: The RSX Type S joined the family in 2002, powered by a new 2.0-liter i-VTEC® 4-cylinder with 200 horsepower (upgraded from 160 hp) connected exclusively to a 6-speed manual transmission. In 2005, the RSX Type S received a power increase to 210 horsepower, along with styling changes that included an eye-catching larger rear wing.
  • 2007-2008 Acura TL Type S: The third-generation Acura TL rejoined the Type S lineup in 2007 and was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 making 286 horsepower (upgraded from 3.2-liter V6 with 258 hp), a 6-speed manual transmission, 4-piston Brembo brakes, sport suspension, upgraded wheels and tires and distinctive quad exhaust.

Precision Crafted Performance: Reborn

Coinciding with its 30th anniversary in 2016, Acura set a new course for its future, turning its focus back to its original and authentic roots as a performance-focused luxury brand. The second-generation Acura NSX launched as the pinnacle expression of Precision Crafted Performance kicking off the brand’s determined focus on a future that was first and foremost about performance.

In 2016, the foundations for a new design language were set with the debut of the Acura Precision Concept. Drawing inspiration from NSX, the Precision Concept adopted a supercar stance and sheer, alluring surfaces that pointed to a bolder more distinctive future for Acura design. The Concept also showcased key new production styling cues, including edgier lines and Acura’s signature new Diamond Pentagon grille, which were quickly adopted across the entire lineup, most recently on the 2019 ILX compact sports sedan.

Acura also expanded its sporty A-Spec package to all core models, attracting younger, more enthusiast-oriented customers in the process. In early 2018, the brand announced its intention to re-establish Type S performance variants in its line-up, and the development of a new, Acura-exclusive, turbocharged V6 engine. In June of last year, Acura launched the 2019 RDX as the first in a new generation of Acura models designed from the ground up around Precision Crafted Performance. In its first year, the third-generation RDX has become the retail best-selling model in luxury’s largest segment, setting multiple consecutive all-time monthly sales records.

The brand has also seen a highly successful return to sports car racing in North America. Acura teams and drivers fielding the NSX GT3 Evo and ARX-05 Daytona Prototype currently lead both Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ Championships in the GTD and DPi classes of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Texas condominium and townhome sales dip, inventory increases from 2018 to 2019

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Texas condominium and townhome sales fell slightly between July 2018 and June 2019, according to the Texas Condominium Sales Report released today by Texas Realtors. Texas condominium sales decreased 8.4% to 13,118 sales, while townhome sales declined 2.7% to 8,849 sales during this time frame.

“Condominiums and townhomes remain a popular choice for Texas buyers because they often have a lower price compared to single-family homes.  Also appealing is the decreased maintenance, and they oftentimes offer a closer commute to work, schools and city life,” said Tray Bates, chairman of Texas Realtors. “Whether you’re a native Texan relocating from another city, or a new Texan from out of state, there’s a wide variety of these types of properties being made available.”

Inventory for Texas condominiums and townhomes increased slightly, with condominiums increasing 0.6 months to 5.1 months of inventory and townhomes increasing 0.9 months to 5.4 months of inventory. In the first six months of the year, Texas condominiums spent an average of 69 days on the market, while townhomes spent an average of 63 days on the market.

From July 2018 to June 2019, the total dollar volume of condominiums and townhomes sold in Texas was $5,504,751,660, with $3,224,612,082 in condominium sales and $2,280,139,578 in townhome sales.

“The statistics from the Texas Condominium Sales Report prove that all types of housing in our Texas real estate market is in demand, especially more affordable options for first-time homebuyers,” said Jim Gaines, Ph.D., chief economist with the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University. “Although condominium and townhome sales experienced slight decreases across the major Texas markets, the increase in inventory statewide is a strong indicator of developer demand to build upwards in not only urban areas but some suburban areas as well.”

Sales prices increased moderately for condominiums, while townhome sales prices decreased slightly. Statewide, the year-to-date median sales price as of June 2019 was $189,000 for condominiums, an annual increase of 1.5%, and $226,000 for townhomes, an annual decrease of 1.2%. The average price-per-square foot during this time frame was $194 for condominiums and $140 for townhomes.

Bates concluded, “From millennials to older homebuyers, condominiums and townhomes offer a turnkey lifestyle and can feature more or better amenities than a traditional single-family home. With more affordable price points, the market for these types of properties can be competitive. A Texas Realtor can help buyers navigate the market, understand property-owners-association rules and provide expert guidance before making a decision.”
