There Is Anarchy In The Arctic In Discovery En Español’s “SOBREVIVIENTES DEL HIELO”

0

MIAMI, Aug. 23, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Not all outlaw towns disappeared along with the Wild West. In Canada’s Northwest Territories lays an isolated frozen lake where people reside free from taxation and the rule of law. The inhabitants of Great Slave Lake live entirely according to their own standards; however, their frozen utopia isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be – especially when the ice begins to crack beneath their homes. SOBREVIVIENTES DEL HIELO premieres Thursday, August 30 at 10pm E/P.

The new Discovery en Español series reveals a world free of regulations where fearless men and women battle hunger, perilous terrain and the constant threat of freezing to death just for the chance to live life off the grid.

The first of 10 one-hour episodes kicks off a few days before the lake’s winter freeze. During this pivotal period, one wrong move could mean losing your home – or your life. But those who make it through the freeze still face extreme adversity: they need to find food and maintain their houses and heat sources to survive the ever-changing conditions on the five-foot-thick frozen ice sheet. The danger escalates when the seasons change, and spring brings the thaw. The surface of the Great Slave ice cracks apart, and everything on top of it shifts, leaving the rebels in fear for their homes and their safety.

SOBREVIVIENTES DEL HIELO questions the tradeoff: is a lawless, liberated life worth the never-ending cycle of hard work, danger and uncertainty, or do the risks outweigh the rewards?

The premiere of SOBREVIVIENTES DEL HIELO will be available in the “Discovery en Español GO” app on August 30. The second episode of the series will also be available exclusively to users on the app before the airing date. 2019 Honda Pilot Named Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS

TORRANCE, California, Aug. 23, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The redesigned and refreshed 2019 Honda Pilot has earned the 2018 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest overall safety rating of TOP SAFETY PICK+ thanks to top ratings of “GOOD” in five of six crashworthiness tests, a standard “GOOD” rating for the Pilot’s headlights and a “SUPERIOR” rating for the Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) feature of the standard Honda Sensing® suite of advanced driver-assistive and active safety technologies.

2019 Honda Pilot Named Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS

“The updated Pilot may have more aggressive styling to better match its true capability, but we also got aggressive on safety performance and driver-assistive features.” said Ray Mikiciuk, assistant vice president of Honda Automobile Sales. “IIHS rated Pilot’s front crash prevention system ‘SUPERIOR’, and that’s just one of many features included in Honda Sensing, now standard on all Pilot trims.”

To qualify for the 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, a vehicle must earn “GOOD” ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests and an “ACCEPTABLE” or “GOOD” rating in the passenger-side small overlap test. It also needs an available front crash prevention system that earns an “ADVANCED” or “SUPERIOR” rating and available “GOOD”-rated headlights.

On sale since July 16, the 2019 Pilot brings a long list of upgrades to Honda’s award-winning 8-seat SUV. The numerous changes include more aggressive exterior styling, an available new hands-free power access tailgate, powertrain refinements, major upgrades to available connected-car technology, an available new Display Audio touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integration, and a volume knob. The 2019 Pilot also adopts the Honda Sensing® suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technology as standard on all trims.

Honda Sensing® helps provide greater awareness of driving conditions around the vehicle, in some cases helping drivers maintain lane position and, under certain conditions, is capable of slowing or even stopping the vehicle if it detects a potential front collision. Comprising the Honda Sensing® suite are Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Forward Collision Warning; Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) incorporating Lane Departure Warning (LDW); Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS); and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

Honda’s blind spot information system (BSI), previously available only on the Elite trim, is now standard on EX, EX-L and Touring trims as well. Additionally, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor has been expanded from the Touring and Elite trims to EX and EX-L.

In addition to the above, Pilot offers numerous other safety and driver-assistive features, such as automatic high beams and a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera, both standard on all trims. The new Pilot was designed to provide a high level of active and passive safety protection and also received a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)1.

In addition to quality, reliability and being backed by America’s Best Warranty, the JD Power IQS recently awarded Hyundai third place overall in the highly regarded industry quality study. The Elantra is built in Hyundai’s Montgomery, Alabama plant and its Ulsan, South Korea facility.

“Refinements to both the interior and exterior were initiated on the 2019 Elantra to maintain its emotional design character and include affordable and desired features,” said Scott Margason, director, product planning, Hyundai. “The hood, front fenders, fascia, grille and headlights as well as the rear fascia, trunk and taillights each have been redesigned to convey a catchy and confident image. On the rear of the vehicle, the license plate has been relocated to the lower fascia to further enhance the new body sculpture.”

SAFETY
Cutting-edge SmartSense safety features have been added to the 2019 Elantra. Most of these features have been added to the SEL trim level and above meaning they are now available on 75 percent of the Elantra lineup. SmartSense safety features have been added to the SEL, Value Edition, Eco, Limited and Sport (SEL and above) trims and include the following:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (camera-only type) that is designed to help detect and monitor the vehicle ahead and warn the driver if a collision may be imminent. The system also initiates automatic braking when it detects a slower or stopped vehicle ahead.
  • Lane Keep Assist that detects the lane on the road and may apply steering wheel control if the vehicle leaves the lane when the vehicle speed is over 40 mph.
  • Driver Attention Alert that warns the driver of tired driving patterns with an audible alert and visual warning displayed on the instrument cluster.

SmartSense features included on the Elantra Limited with Ultimate Package include:

  • Safe Exit Assist that may sound an alert when a vehicle approaches from behind letting passengers know it may not be safe to open the door to exit the vehicle.
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection is a technology that utilizes both the front forward-facing radar and camera through sensor fusion to help detect a vehicle or pedestrian, and warn the driver of a potential collision. If the driver does not react to avoid the impact, the system may apply emergency braking in certain circumstances.

Additional Smart Sense Safety features include:

  • Blind-Spot Collision Warning with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist.

NEXT GENERATION INFOTAINMENT: AUDIO/VIDEO/NAVIGATION (AVN) 5.0 WITH HD TRAFFIC
The 2019 Elantra also debuts with Hyundai’s next generation AVN 5.0 infotainment system. This system features an upgraded processor for greater responsiveness, as well as an 8-inch screen vs. the 7-inch screen in the last generation Elantra. Using presets with AVN 5.0 is a snap because AM, FM and SiriusXM channels are now combined on one screen and also feature HERE HD Traffic (without a subscription). A bird’s eye view has also been added to navigation maps and drivers can now get traffic flow and incident data without ever paying for a subscription via HD Radio.

The Elantra is available with conveniences like Infinity Premium Audio with Clari-Fi™, Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™ and wireless smartphone charging.

ENGINE PERFORMANCE
The Elantra features two engine options that provide fuel efficiency and a third engine option in the Elantra Sport model. The SE, SEL and Limited offer the Nu 2.0L MPI Atkinson Cycle engine with 147 hp @6200 RPM and Eco offers the Kappa 1.4L Turbo-GDI with 128 hp @5500 RPM. The Eco model achieves an EPA estimated 35 mpg combined fuel economy rating thanks to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission.

ELANTRA SPORT TRIM
The redesigned 2019 Elantra Sport will debut later in 2018 and have similar design changes to the other models. Hyundai will release more details in the fall. Mechanically, it will have the same level of differentiation as the 2018 model. The Elantra Sport trim features a 1.6L Turbo-GDI engine, 6-speed manual transmission or available seven-speed dual clutch transmission, a sporty interior and revised trim headliner, advanced technology and connectivity, paddle shifters, sport front seats with leather, flat-bottom, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a sport instrument cluster and door trim garnish. The Elantra Sport features multi-link independent rear suspension which improves the dynamic performance and allows for greater flexibility in tuning.

Merlin Launches In New York City Metro Area to Help Hourly Workers Find The Best Job Opportunities

0

NEW YORK, Aug. 22, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Merlin, a jobs platform exclusively for hourly workers, launched today in the New York City metro area, bringing the same focus traditionally applied to salaried jobs to this market. Merlin uses a matching algorithm to connect qualified candidates with hiring employers in less than a day. The app is available for job seekers and recruiters on Android and iOS devices, and accessible online at merlinjobs.com

Candidates on Merlin forgo traditional resumes or cover letters for a user profile that highlights their experience, personality and skills. From there, candidates are matched to opportunities aligned with their qualifications and closest to their home. Job listings are available in a wide range of categories including restaurants, hospitality, general labor, and retail, from small businesses to household names such as Starbucks, Lyft, Levi’s, Shake Shack, FedEx, Hilton and Target.

Merlin is dedicated to resolving the issues that often surface on sites that cater to the hourly job market including fake jobs, lack of transparency, never-ending job boards and the absence of location or category filters. The Merlin Trust and Safety Team review each employer manually to ensure candidates are applying to real companies with viable opportunities. The result is a streamlined interface that gives employers and candidates an easy to use and efficient matching process.

“At Merlin, we recognize the impact of hourly workers in every community and are committed to providing better access to jobs that give each individual a greater sense of personal growth and financial security,” said Güimar Vaca Sittic, Co-Founder & Co-CEO of Merlin. “We believe that the time, energy and resources candidates put into their searches should be applied to the actual work, not to filling out a complicated application that may not even reach the intended recipient.”

“Merlin makes the hiring and recruitment process quicker, easier and more seamless,” added Borja Moreno de los Rios, Co-Founder & Co-CEO of Merlin. “We’re excited to officially launch Merlin and help hourly talent find permanent positions closer to their homes, which in turn gives businesses the stability that comes with finding the right candidate.”

Employers interested in hiring through the platform begin by creating a company profile. Posting a job takes less than two minutes and businesses can expect to receive applications from qualified candidates immediately, without any additional advertising. Companies can also utilize filters to search through thousands of candidates by location preference and previous experience. Both employers and candidates can access Merlin’s safe chat feature, which allows both parties to discuss job details, schedule interviews and hire in real time.

“Merlin allows me to connect directly with the best candidates New York has to offer in a few simple steps,” said Victor Mouka, Owner of Amir’s in NYC. “I rely heavily on it to uncover the prospects most relevant to me.”

Merlin has secured $24 million in funding from leading partners including General Catalyst, Firstmark, FJ Labs and Uncork, among others. The company plans to expand its offering to other major U.S. cities in the coming months.

About Merlin

Merlin is a jobs platform that matches hourly talent with employers looking to hire. As New York City’s leading mobile app for hourly employment and the fastest-growing mobile job board for blue-collar talent, more than half a million candidates and thousands of companies have found each other on Merlin. Merlin is committed to providing better guidance and access to jobs that give hourly workers a greater sense of personal growth and financial security. Launched in beta in May 2017, Merlin was founded by Co-CEOs Güimar Vaca Sittic, Borja Moreno de los Rios and CMO William Guillouard. Merlin has raised $24M in funding to date.

UNM’s newest online program targets needs of Hispanic/Latino and Native students

0

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico, Aug. 21, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The University of New Mexico launched its fully online bachelor’s degree in strategic communication on August 20, 2018 – but students can join us in mid-October for second-half Fall semester classes.

“In this managed online program, students can take 12 courses in a little more than a year,” said David Weiss, chair of UNM’s Communication and Journalism Department. “Students can quickly and efficiently complete a degree previously interrupted by life or earn extra credentials for a current or desired job.”

This program allows students to complete each course in eight weeks. It’s designed for people who are busy, but want to finish their education or branch out in their career.

“UNM’s been teaching the face-to-face version of our strategic communication program for more than seven years – and before that, we taught campus-based public relations and advertising courses for over two decades,” explained Judith McIntosh White, a C&J associate professor and a partner in creating the new program. “But since I earned a degree while working fulltime, I had a passion to make our undergraduate degree available to those who can’t show up in person for a regular campus-based program nor spare the time to earn a four-year traditional degree.”

White, a veteran of teaching at one of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities, added that the UNM program brings unique institutional strengths to serving Hispanic/Latino and Native American students across the United States.

“The University of New Mexico is one of a handful of federally recognized Hispanic-serving institutions, with a student body that is over 50 percent underserved populations,” she said. “And our department has a record of graduating more Hispanic/Latino and Native American students than the university as a whole. Our classes make a point to incorporate Hispanic/Latino and Native cultural values and concerns. I see our program as fitting the needs of men and women of color who want to finish their BAs or get a boost for career transitions.”

Success stories from the face-to-face strategic communication program include placement of students with NASA, at public relations and advertising agencies, in institutions such as UNM athletics and UCAM, and in graduate and professional programs.

“Our online program will strive to mirror the success of the F2F version,” White said.
