Rossi Dominates Crash-Marred Pocono Run

Honda driver Alexander Rossi scored his fifth IndyCar Series win of 2018 Sunday at Pocono Raceway.

LONG POND, Pennsylvania, Aug. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Already a winner of one 500-mile race – the historic 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 in 2016 – Alexander Rossi added another “500” win to his IndyCar Series career total today with a dominating performance at the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway.

Honda driver Alexander Rossi scored his fifth IndyCar Series win of 2018 Sunday at Pocono Raceway.

Starting third, Rossi moved to second on the opening lap, which was quickly waved yellow when Graham Rahal and Spencer Pigot made contact just after the green flag.  On the Lap 6 restart, Rossi took the lead as a fierce multi-car crash was triggered by contact between Robert Wickens and Ryan Hunter-Reay.  The initial impact sent Wickens up into the debris fence, and the cars of Takuma Sato, James Hinchcliffe and Pietro Fittipaldi also were caught up in the crash.  The accident resulted in a red flag, stopping the race for nearly two hours as course workers repaired the catch fence.

Dr. Geoffrey Billows, IndyCar Medical Director, confirmed that Wickens was awake and alert following the crash.  He was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest in Allentown, Pa., for further evaluation.  The other four drivers involved in the wreck – Ryan Hunter-Reay, Takuma Sato, Pietro Fittipaldi and James Hinchcliffe – were evaluated and released from the infield care center.

When the green flag waved again, Rossi took control.  The Andretti Autosport driver led a total of 180 laps enroute to his third race win of the season, a total matched only by championship rivals Scott Dixon and Josef Newgarden.  He now trails Dixon by 29 points (530-501) with three races remaining.

For his part, Dixon quickly recovered from a poor qualifying result on Saturday to lead three laps and finish third, one of only four cars on the lead lap at the end of the contest.  Fellow Honda driver Sebastien Bourdais rounded out the top four finishers, and was the final car on the lead lap.

Video recaps from this weekend’s Honda IndyCar Series activities at Pocono are available on the “Honda Racing/HPD” YouTube channel. Produced by the Carolinas Production Group, the video packages can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/HondaRacingHPDTV

The Verizon IndyCar Series now heads west for the final oval race of the 2018 season, the August 25 Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at Gateway Motorsports Park just outside of St. Louis, Missouri.

Alexander Rossi (Andretti Autosport Honda) Started third, finished first, third IndyCar Series win of 2018, fifth career victory: “The #27 NAPA Auto Parts Honda was better than everyone else, so it was an exceptional day.  I have amazing teammates.  Zach [Veach] and Marco [Andretti] really helped me out there in traffic.  You can’t do any of this without an amazing team, so I’m really fortunate to be at Andretti Autosport and be surrounded by this great group of people. But right now, our thoughts are with Rob [Wickens] and everyone involved in that crash.  It’s tough to really celebrate after something like that takes place.”

Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) Started 13th, finished second, continues to lead Verizon IndyCar Series Drivers’ Championship: “It was a very ‘tough day in the office’.  We tried to go off [pit] strategy, and got in that ‘fuel-save’ mode, so our pace was really slow and it was very difficult to pass anyone.  We got the most out of the PNC Bank Honda and did okay on [championship] points. Congrats to [Alexander] Rossi.  He’s driving fantastic at the moment, and we’re going to have to ‘slow his roll’ here pretty quickly!”

Marc Sours (Senior Manager and Chief Engineer, Honda Performance Development) on today’s Honda victory at Pocono Raceway: “Most important, Robert Wickens, his family and friends will remain in our thoughts as he recovers from his injuries.  Congratulations to Alexander Rossi, who was just so strong all day.  Everyone at Honda and HPD will be focused on equally supporting all of our drivers as the season winds down, and the championship battle intensifies.”

Ridgeline Baja Race Truck Takes Class Victory at Vegas to Reno

0
The Honda Off-Road Racing team scored its third victory of the season this season, with the Jeff Proctor-led team taking their Ridgeline Baja Race Truck to the Class 7200 win at this weekend’s General Tire Vegas to Reno race.

LAS VEGAS, Aug. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Honda Off-Road Racing Team and its Ridgeline Baja Race Truck continued their winning ways this weekend at the General Tire Vegas to Reno race, claiming a third class victory in four events this season.

The Honda Off-Road Racing team scored its third victory of the season this season, with the Jeff Proctor-led team taking their Ridgeline Baja Race Truck to the Class 7200 win at this weekend’s General Tire Vegas to Reno race.

A part of the Best In The Desert series of off-road races, the “V2R” is the longest event of its type in the United States and features a unique set of challenges, including high ambient temperatures, substantial elevation changes and the constant potential of sudden, strong rain storms.  The course is also known for several high-speed sections, stretches of deep silt and thick dust that can make overtaking difficult.

Starting seventh, based on a qualifying draw, in the nine-truck “Class 7200” field, team owner/driver Jeff Proctor and navigator Evan Weller started out at a conservative pace for the first 50 miles, then began to gain positions, moving to first in class at the 88-mile mark.

Continuing to build the lead through the first half of the race, Proctor passed off the driving duties to Pat Dailey for the final 200 miles. This weekend’s victory adds to an impressive total for the Ridgeline Baja Race Truck this season, including class wins at the Parker 425 in February and at the Baja 500 in June.  In addition, the team finished second in its other start this year, at the Mint 400. The Honda Off-Road Racing Team now begins the final prep and logistics for its final race of the year, the Baja 1000 in November.

Powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 engine produced by Honda Performance Development, the Ridgeline Baja Race Truck features a body designed by Honda R&D Americas’ Los Angeles Design Studio, with inspiration taken from the current Honda Ridgeline, also designed and developed by Honda R&D North Americas.  Key design cues drawn from the Honda Ridgeline can be seen in the front fascia, hood, roof, bed and side profile.

Making approximately 550 horsepower, HPD’s 3.5-liter HR35TT engine uses the same block and cylinder heads as the production V6 that powers the all-new Ridgeline.  Additional, custom elements of the powertrain include an HPD-designed intake plenum and custom Engine Control Unit programming.

Photos and information from the Ridgeline Baja Race Truck’s efforts can be viewed on Instagram at @hondaoffroadracing and @proctor_race.  Honda Racing/HPD news and reports can be found on Twitter at https://twitter.com/HondaRacing_HPD and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/HondaRacingHPD.

Jeff Proctor (team owner/driver Ridgeline Baja Race Truck) finished 1st in Class 7200 Unlimited V6 Trucks: “Being patient early in the race and avoiding mistakes in the dust was a key strategy for us today. This is a sweet victory for the entire team and our first at this legendary race. I can’t thank our entire crew enough for all their hard work to get us here.”

Cal/OSHA Issues Citations to Outdoor Advertising Company for Billboard Electric Shock Accident

0

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Cal/OSHA has issued citations to an outdoor advertising company for serious safety violations after a worker suffered third-degree burns when a metal pole he was using to install a sign on a billboard came into contact with an overhead power line.

On February 6, two sign hangers for Outfront Media were working 25 feet above ground on the billboard’s platform to install a vinyl sign over West 3rd Street. The workers were using 11-foot poles to place the 14-by-48-foot sign. One of the metal poles touched an energized high-voltage power line located near the edge of the billboard, which resulted in serious burns to 25 percent of the sign-hanger’s body.

“Employers must identify and evaluate all hazards in the workplace,” said Cal/OSHA Chief Juliann Sum. “When energized overhead lines are present, the employer must ensure that employees maintain required clearances, or minimum safe distances from the overhead lines, to protect employees from electrical shock or electrocution.”

Cal/OSHA issued three citations to Outfront Media totaling $32,435 in proposed penalties. A serious accident-related citation was issued for the employer’s violation of provisions for preventing accidents due to proximity to overhead lines, which requires a minimum clearance of 6 feet be maintained for work done near 34.5 kilovolt lines. A serious citation was issued for failure to identify and evaluate hazards related to installing signs on billboards in proximity to power lines. Cal/OSHA also issued a general citation to the employer for an inadequate heat illness prevention plan for its outdoor workers.

Since 2015, Cal/OSHA has opened 11 inspections with outdoor and display advertising employers. Among those inspections were six accidents, including an electric shock incident last year when a worker’s ladder came into contact with overhead power lines during preparations to hang a sign.

A citation is classified as serious when there is a realistic possibility that death or serious harm could result from the actual hazard created by the violation.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, or Cal/OSHA, is the division within the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) that helps protect California’s workers from health and safety hazards on the job in almost every workplace.

Cal/OSHA offers a fact sheet for safety meetings on working safely on or near high voltage overhead lines. Cal/OSHA’s Consultation Services Branch provides free and voluntary assistance to employers to improve their safety and health programs. Employers should call (800) 963-9424 for assistance from Cal/OSHA Consultation Services.

Dangerous 4 a.m. Bar Bill SB 905 Advances as Lawmakers Choose Bar Profits Over Public Health & Safety

0
Alcohol Justice logo. (PRNewsFoto/Alcohol Justice)

SAN RAFAEL, California, Aug. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Alcohol Justice and the California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA) expressed horror today as the California State Assembly Appropriations Committee voted to allow SB 905 to proceed.  The bill was introduced by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and a number of co-authors including Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles).

Alcohol Justice logo. (PRNewsFoto/Alcohol Justice)

“Despite last year’s oppose recommendation from the California Department of Finance and over 40 years of compelling, peer-reviewed data on harms and costs that would result from two additional hours of alcohol sales, the Assembly Appropriations Committee clearly caved to Wiener and his late night supporters,” stated Bruce Lee Livingston, Executive Director / CEO of Alcohol Justice. “My own Senator Scott Wiener continues to add more cities to his so-called pilot program and continues to ignore the evidence of street violence, emergency room crowding and sleepy, impaired driving and death his bill will cause.”

The evidence for increased harms was presented to the legislature this year in an Alcohol Justice/CAPA report entitled The Late Night Threat, Science, Harms, and Costs of Extending Bar Service Hours. It highlighted the existing data supporting how the acute effects of extending alcohol sales would spread to “Splash Zones” surrounding the cities then mentioned in the bill: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Oakland, Long Beach, and West Hollywood. Since the report was released, three more cities have been added to the so-called “pilot project” – Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Coachella.

“Wiener has made a mockery of scientific research and the legislative process by calling his dangerous experiment a ‘pilot project”‘, stated Michael Scippa, Public Affairs Director at Alcohol Justice.  “A true, scientifically designed ‘pilot project’ would cover only a small sample, not over 76% of the state’s population that will be exposed to additional alcohol-related harms if SB 905 becomes law.”

Ignored by this committee was a second report presented to the legislature this year titled: The effect SB 905 would have on alcohol-related crashes & Senator Wiener’s post hoc fallacy.  The report was a response to Senator Wiener’s attempt to discount the existing body of science with a spread sheet of meaningless, cherry-picked, disparate, numbers from federal sources. The table Senator Wiener passes around, claiming there’s no harm in keeping bars open to 4 a.m., is a piece of junk science,” reported Ramon Castellblanch, Ph.D., President, Quality Healthcare Concepts, Professor Emeritus, Health Education, San Francisco State University and author of the report.  “He’s using it to misinform legislators and to lie to them about the DEADLY effects of bar hours being extended to 4 in the morning.”

Also ignored by this committee was a statement from Jonathan Fielding, M.D., M.P.H., M.A., M.B.A, Distinguished Professor UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and UCLA Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Fielding was Chair of the U.S. Community Preventive Services Task Force which found in a peer-reviewed, global meta-analysis that every 2-hour increase in last-call times results in greater vehicle crash injuries and E.R. admissions. (Hahn et al., 2010) Dr. Fielding stated, “…I have no reason to believe that an increase in hours of sale anywhere in the U.S. would have different results.”

California currently suffers over 10,500 alcohol-related deaths and $34 billion in costs annually. The California Office of Traffic Safety has reported that fatal DUI is a chronic, worsening problem for the state. Between 2014 and 2016, alcohol-related crash deaths rose 21%. That number can only go up with two additional hours of alcohol consumption. Thus, the only benefit of selling alcohol between 2 and 4 a.m. will be greater profits to bar, restaurant, and club owners in the party zones the bill will create. While the public and all levels of government will be forced to continue to cover the costs of cleaning up the mess that follows.

“The bill now heads to the Assembly Floor where we will likely observe just how strong the alcohol lobby’s influence is in California,” stated Livingston. “It doesn’t look good for public health and safety. Governor Jerry Brown is our last hope for a veto from an adult that pays attention to the destruction this bill will cause on California’s highways.”

2019 Honda Odyssey is Top Minivan in IIHS Passenger-Side Small Overlap and LATCH Testing

TORRANCE, California, Aug. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The 2019 Honda Odyssey leads all tested minivans in recent ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), including being the only minivan to achieve a “GOOD” rating for both the driver and passenger sides in IIHS’ strenuous Small Overlap Front Crash Test. In addition, the institute recognized Odyssey with its top rating of “GOOD+” in its testing of Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) to determine the relative ease to safely install child safety seats in a vehicle. No other tested minivan earned above an “ACCEPTABLE” rating from IIHS in LATCH testing.

2019 Honda Odyssey is Top Minivan in IIHS Passenger-Side Small Overlap and LATCH Testing

Odyssey qualifies as a 2018 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK when equipped with available Honda Sensing® and LED headlights. Honda Sensing is now standard on EX and above trims, accounting for 99 percent of 2019 Odyssey sales.1

“Minivan buyers list safety as one of their greatest purchase considerations, and the Odyssey continues to be a top performer in independent safety ratings, further distancing itself from segment competitors,” said Ray Mikiciuk, assistant vice president of Honda Automobile Sales. “If you’re in the market for a minivan and you care about safety, there is simply no better choice than the Honda Odyssey.”

A small overlap crash occurs when just the front corner of the vehicle strikes another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole. IIHS began rating vehicles for occupant protection in a driver-side small overlap front crash in 2012 and added the passenger-side test in 2017 to make sure occupants on both sides of the vehicle get equal protection.

LATCH is a system of attachment hardware for child restraints that is intended to simplify installation. Child restraints installed with LATCH are more likely to be put in correctly than restraints installed using the vehicle safety belt, IIHS research has shown.

According to IIHS, even with LATCH, installation errors are common. The Institute’s LATCH ratings are based on key ease-of-use criteria that have been shown to minimize mistakes in installing lower attachment straps and top tethers. The top tether keeps the child seat from pitching forward in a crash, and all forward-facing restraints need them.

Among 2018-19 minivans evaluated, the Odyssey was the only one to earn a “GOOD+” rating for LATCH ease of use. The “GOOD+” rating is for vehicles that meet the criteria for a “GOOD” rating and provide additional seating positions with easy-to-use LATCH hardware. The eight-passenger 2019 Odyssey offers five LATCH-equipped seating positions, three in the second row and two in the third row.
