Lexus Announces Pricing for the New Three-Row RX Hybrid

0
Set to go on sale at dealers in April, the new three-row crossover once again raises the bar for design and innovation in the hybrid segment.

CHICAGO, Feb. 7, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Luxury buyers can now enjoy the confidence of all-wheel drive with the performance and efficiency of the RX 450hL. Set to go on sale at dealers in April, the new three-row crossover once again raises the bar for design and innovation in the hybrid segment.

Set to go on sale at dealers in April, the new three-row crossover once again raises the bar for design and innovation in the hybrid segment.

The RX 450hL (AWD) will have a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $50,620* — just $1,550 more than the RX 350L AWD model.

Most notably, the new RX 450hL comes standard with second-row captain’s chairs in addition to leather-trimmed seats, driver seat, side mirror and steering wheel memory, and Lexus Enform Safety Connect and Service Connect complimentary for the first 10 years of vehicle ownership.

Always Charged and Always Ready
Lexus’ history of hybrid innovation goes back to the launch of the world’s first luxury hybrid, the RX 400h, in 2005.  It’s this experience that allows the new RX 450hL to blend fuel efficiency, instantaneous power and luxury.

The RX 450hL delivers the same uncompromised styling and instant torque you would expect from an RX hybrid, now with even more space for the unexpected.  In addition, the RX 450hL Drive Mode Select system has an EV mode that enables the vehicle to drive under electric power at lower speeds for short distances.

Performance and Design
The RX 450hL combines the 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine with two high-torque electric drive motor-generators, producing 308 combined system horsepower for strong acceleration and passing performance.

With the new RXhL model, Lexus extended the body length 4.3 inches (110 mm) at the rear and used a steeper tailgate window angle than on the two-row models to ensure more headroom for third-row passengers. Access to the third row is made easy with the touch of a lever that slides and folds the second-row seats forward.

Lexus designed the third row of the RXL models to offer the same comfort and luxury as in the middle row. The positioning of the second row is slightly higher than the third row, creating more foot room for rear passengers. A tri-zone climate control system gives third-row passengers separate heating and air conditioning vents, and for convenience, a power-folding third-row seat and power tailgate are both standard.

Lexus Safety
The standard Lexus Safety System+ includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keep Assist, Intelligent High Beams and All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Blind Spot Monitor with Intuitive Parking Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Braking are also available. Panoramic View Monitor is an optional feature.

Luxury Package
The available Luxury package offers comfort for Lexus drivers and passengers adding semi-aniline trimmed seats, interior LED ambient illumination, manual rear door sunshades, laser-cut Gray Sapele wood trim with aluminum, 20-inch alloy wheels with machined finish and selectable color inserts, heated wood steering wheel and more.

Cal/OSHA Cites Tree Trimming Company after Brush Chipper Fatality

0

AMERICAN CANYON, California, Feb. 5, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Cal/OSHA has cited Gorilla Tree Service for serious and accident-related workplace safety violations following an investigation of a brush chipper accident that killed a 24-year-old worker in Napa.

On August 15, 2017, the employee was working on the ground as part of a two-person crew removing limbs from a liquidambar tree when a rope used to lower limbs from an aerial bucket was caught and pulled into the chipper, strangling him.

Cal/OSHA’s investigation found that Gorilla Tree Service was unable to certify it had properly trained the worker, who had been employed at the company for about six months.

“Tree work is a high-risk industry, and safety requirements are in place to protect workers from known hazards,” said Cal/OSHA Chief Juliann Sum. “Employers must ensure that workers are effectively trained to use brush chippers and other dangerous machinery safely.”

Cal/OSHA cited Gorilla Tree Service $23,200 for seven violations including one serious accident-related, one serious and five general violations for the employer’s failure to:

  • Provide documented training records for workers to certify that they had completed the required tree work and CPR training.
  • Brief workers before starting the job, including a description of hazards, work procedures and appropriate protective equipment.
  • Ensure the chipper was equipped, maintained and operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Cal/OSHA found the chipper’s moving parts of belt and pulley drives were not guarded as required.
  • Prevent entanglement hazards and unwanted material from entering the point of operation on the chipper.

Tree workers are 56 times more likely to suffer a fatal occupational injury than workers in all industries combined. The major causes of tree worker injuries and fatalities include falls, electrical shock, being struck by a tree branch, chainsaw lacerations, palm tree skirt collapses and ladder accidents.

Over the past six years, brush chipper-related incidents in California resulted in one fatality and four serious injuries:

  • A worker was killed in 2012 while feeding brush into a chipper in Nevada City when a rope binding the brush became entangled in the chipper drum and looped around the worker’s neck. The force on the rope was so great that the worker was decapitated.
  • In Los Angeles County in 2012, a worker was hospitalized from injuries caused by a chipper. Two workers were removing a tree using rope and a brush chipper. One of the workers was attached to a rope that abruptly went into the chipper pulling him toward the feeder. He was taken to the hospital with a punctured lung and fractures to his ribs, left arm, thumb and wrist.
  • In 2013, a Solano County worker lost his left ring finger when his wedding band suddenly became caught between the side frame of the feeding bay and the branch he was pushing into the brush chipper.
  • While operating a brush chipper in 2013, a worker in Concord was hospitalized. A truck rolled down a hill and jackknifed toward him while he was feeding brush into the chipper. Both of his legs became pinned between the truck’s side door and the frame of the chipper’s in-feed table. Both of his legs were fractured.

Cal/OSHA launched a tree work safety campaign in 2016 to help employees and employers prevent accidents, and made available a Tree Work Safety webpage, Tree Work Safety Guide, fact sheet and checklist.

America’s Promise Alliance and AT&T Announce GradNation Acceleration Grant Recipients in Five States

0
GradNation campaign

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — America’s Promise Alliance, with generous support from AT&T, announced today the selection of five GradNation Acceleration Grant recipients, as part of the GradNation campaign to raise the high school graduation rate to 90 percent by 2020. The selected grantees represent two state and three community efforts poised to accelerate progress for more young people to high school graduation and post-secondary success.

GradNation campaign

Totaling $800,000 over the two-year grant period, each of the two state grantees will receive $250,000 and each of the three community grantees will receive $100,000. Roughly 5,000 young people are estimated to be impacted across all five grantees.

This work of the GradNation campaign is a continuation of a decade-long undertaking. During that time, the national graduation rate has increased from 73 percent to its current all-time high of 84.1 percent. That increase represents more than 2 million additional young people who were able to graduate from high school with their class over the past decade. But while the nation’s young people have made great progress, there remains more work to be done. GradNation Acceleration Grants will provide the support that communities need to further their efforts.

“We know that the most significant improvements of the national high school graduation rate will happen on the local level – in districts and communities working each day to meet the individual needs of young people,” said John Gomperts, president and CEO of America’s Promise. “The final grantees were selected because they demonstrated a deep understanding of the specific student populations needing additional support and have a track record for maximizing the resources and partnerships to meet those student needs.”

“The GradNation campaign continues to demonstrate progress at increasing our nation’s high school graduation rate while also helping students pursue high quality, post-secondary degrees.  Both of which are critical steps to creating a skilled and diverse workforce,” said Nicole Anderson, assistant vice president of corporate social responsibility and president of the AT&T Foundation. “It is important that we continue to invest in work that helps move students across the high school graduation stage and gets them ready for the next phase of life.”

Applications were submitted from 10 priority states that would have a measurable impact on improving the national graduation rate and closing equity gaps.  In total, there were more than 100 applicants – all committed to improving graduation rate outcomes for a specific group of students using strategies aligned to the GradNation Action Platform. The platform identifies six areas that every community should act on to accelerate their high school graduation rate.

GradNation Acceleration Grantees are as follows:

States

  • GEORGIAGeorgia Division of Family and Children Services – Project Graduate 2.0: Unlocking the Power and Potential of Georgia’s Foster Youth: The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services uses high-quality data to identify, implement, and sustain best practices to support foster youth in Fulton and DeKalb Counties. While the state averages a 79 percent graduation rate, only 11 percent of foster students earn diplomas— an issue compounded by the growth of youth in foster care by 80 percent in the last four years. Foster youth face disruptions to their education that lead to academic underperformance and increase the likelihood of their leaving school prior to graduating. In response, the program intends to strengthen the system’s capacity to address the needs of foster youth through advisory workgroups, research on program impact, and cross-agency collaborative learning.
  • MICHIGANYouth Solutions Inc. – Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates:  Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) will expand its model into low-graduation rate high schools across the state. Michigan’s graduation rate is 79.7 percent and large graduation rate gaps by race and income persist. Dropout Prevention and Recovery efforts will include career mentoring, career advising and exposure, training, and competency-based curriculum, as well as 12 months of follow up after high school graduation. With support from over 50 local and national partners, and a strong relationship with the state employment agency, JMG’s approach connects students with learning beyond the classroom that prepares them to succeed through high school and into the workforce.

Communities

  • ALBUQUERQUEUnited Way of Central New Mexico – Mission: Graduate: Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) is a majority Hispanic district serving high rates of students living in poverty and learning English. In 2016, the district’s 4-year graduation rate was 66 percent. In response, United Way of Central New Mexico’s collective impact initiative Mission: Graduate will partner with APS’s Rio Grande High School to expand use of the school’s early warning system program to support off-track juniors and seniors and work to re-engage youth who have already left school. These students will gain access to college and career exploration opportunities in addition to mentors and counselors.
  • GREELEYEVANSGreeley-Evans District 6 – Every Student Matters: Accelerating Graduation Rates and Decreasing Dropout Rates: Greeley-Evans School District 6 in northeastern Colorado has a graduation rate of 77.1 percent and will focus its efforts on students at the Greeley Alternative Program (GAP) in partnership with Zero Dropouts. GAP enrolls students at risk of dropping out of high school or who face barriers to success in traditional high schools by providing an innovative instructional program combined with wraparound services. With support from partners, the district provides these students with supports including childcare and housing assistance, in addition to career pathway options like a paid internship or access to personalized tutoring.
  • BOYLE HEIGHTSProyecto Pastoral – Boyle Heights English Learner Acceleration Project: A collaborative in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, Promesa Boyle Heights has been actively working to improve graduation rates in the community since 2012. Together with the community, Promesa Boyle Heights has been able to improve graduation rates in the region to 82 percent, however, EL students only have a 52 percent graduation rate. Promesa Boyle Heights will expand these efforts to the alternative campus, Boyle Heights High School, thus allowing for a deeper focus on Long-Term English Learners (LTELs) and Newcomer ELs. Promesa Boyle Heights also aims to increase school capacity to address EL needs and develop student and parent skills to advocate for policies and practices that directly support EL students.

America’s Promise sought to support local efforts poised to impact high school completion and the national graduation rate. Proposals were expected to describe a state or community effort that demonstrated (1) an understanding of school-level and community-level graduation rates and related data, (2) a collaborative relationship with high school(s) and/or the district, and (3) a commitment to meet the needs of students most at-risk of not graduating: low-income students, Black and Hispanic/Latino students, students with disabilities, English learners, and those served by low-graduation rate high schools.

The intended outcomes for this work include: an increase to the graduation rate, shared learning for adoption and replication in other states and communities, and strengthened local capacity to improve outcomes for young people based on their needs and strengths.

Official Synopsis of Cuerpo de Élite’

Ever since the government approved its creation during Spain’s Transition to Democracy, a secret special operations group has existed, made up of members of the different police forces that protect the country, though no one knows of their existence. In light of the success of this most singular Elite Squad – and though it’s really hard to believe in light of the antics of its members – the Minister of the Interior decides to expand the project and set up a new unit.

A green beret, a Catalan police woman, a Jesuit Basque cop, a bomb squad expert and a thief who passes himself off as a national police agent, are going to have to set aside their differences and tackle each mission impossible together. They’re definitely the world’s finest police squad (but the worst imaginable).

Top Youth Volunteers Of 2018 Honored Nationwide

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards logo

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Many are fighting hunger in their local communities. Some created programs that encourage young women to consider STEM careers. Others are leading initiatives to support people with physical or intellectual disabilities.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards logo

Those are just some stories of the 102 youth volunteers – two from each state and the District of Columbia – who today were named State Honorees by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring students in grades 5-12 for outstanding volunteer service. Read the names and stories of this year’s honorees at http://spirit.prudential.com.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, now in its 23rd year, is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Each of the 102 State Honorees will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip in late April to Washington, D.C., for four days of national recognition events. During the trip, 10 will be named America’s top youth volunteers of 2018.

In addition to the State Honorees, the program’s judges recognized 234 students nationwide as Distinguished Finalists for their impressive community service activities. Each will receive an engraved bronze medallion. Nearly 500 other applicants were awarded Certificates of Excellence for their volunteer work.

Many of this year’s State Honorees and Distinguished Finalists were recognized for their work supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of their peers. Several are serving as first responders with volunteer fire and EMT departments, and a few collected stuffed animals to comfort children in traumatic situations. A number of these top youth volunteers led large-scale campaigns to collect and distribute food for people in need, and a few raised money for hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico.

“Prudential is proud to recognize these remarkable young people for using their energy, creativity and compassion to bring meaningful change to their communities,” said Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld. “We hope their stories inspire others to consider how they can do the same.”

“These middle level and high school students have not only improved the lives of the people and communities they’ve served – they also set an important example for their peers,” said JoAnn Bartoletti, executive director of NASSP. “These honorees prove that you’re never too young to make a difference.”

About The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards represents the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service. All public and private middle level and high schools in the country, as well as all Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs and affiliates of Points of Light’s HandsOn Network, were eligible to select a student or member for a local Prudential Spirit of Community Award. These Local Honorees were then reviewed by an independent judging panel, which selected State Honorees and Distinguished Finalists based on criteria including personal initiative, effort, impact and personal growth.

While in Washington, D.C., the 102 State Honorees – one middle level and one high school student from each state and the District of Columbia – will tour the capital’s landmarks, meet top youth volunteers from other parts of the world, attend a gala awards ceremony at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, and visit their congressional representatives on Capitol Hill. On April 30, 10 of the State Honorees – five middle level and five high school students – will be named America’s top youth volunteers of 2018. Each of these National Honorees will receive:

  • a $5,000 award
  • a gold medallion
  • a crystal trophy for their nominating school or organization, and
  • a $5,000 Prudential Foundation grant for a nonprofit charitable organization of their choice

Since the program began in 1995, more than 120,000 young volunteers have been honored at the local, state and national level. The program also is conducted by Prudential subsidiaries in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Ireland, India, China, Brazil and Poland. In addition to granting its own awards, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program also distributes President’s Volunteer Service Awards to qualifying Local Honorees.

In 2017, more than 1,000 eligible entries were received. The selected essays conveyed how heritage and culture have driven students’ pursuit of higher education and betterment of their communities. The scholarship maintains founder Gregorio Bustelo’s passion and tradition of reinvesting in local communities and celebrating Latino cultural values. Café Bustelo proudly continues the tradition of supporting communities that have enjoyed its coffee in their homes for nearly a century.

Ridgeline Baja Race Truck Wins Parker 425

The Honda Off-Road Racing Team and its Ridgeline Baja Race Truck opened the 2018 off-road racing season with a decisive victory in the “7200” class for V6-powered race trucks in Saturday’s Parker 425.

PARKER, Arizona, Feb. 5, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Honda Off-Road Racing Team and its Ridgeline Baja Race Truck opened the 2018 off-road racing season in the best possible fashion, with a decisive victory in the “7200” class for V6-powered race trucks in Saturday’s Parker 425.

The Honda Off-Road Racing Team and its Ridgeline Baja Race Truck opened the 2018 off-road racing season with a decisive victory in the “7200” class for V6-powered race trucks in Saturday’s Parker 425.

A part of the Best In the Desert Racing Association off-road racing series, the Parker 425 features three laps of a rugged course through the southwestern Arizona desert.  Each lap presents competitors with wide-ranging conditions, from sand washes and rough rock sections to wide-open rally roads.  This year featured an added element, as the course deteriorated rapidly while a field of over 200 entries made its way around each lap.

Starting fourth in a field of 11 Class 7200 V6 trucks, driver/team principal Jeff Proctor and navigator Evan Weller ran at a rapid pace on the opening lap, gaining two positions in the first 30 miles, then moving into the lead by race mile 80.  After their first scheduled pit stop for fuel and rear tires, Proctor and Weller finished the first lap with a 4.5-minute lead on the field.

Although the course began to deteriorate throughout the late afternoon and into the night hours, the Ridgeline continued to widen its gap over the Class 7200 field.  At the end of the second lap, Proctor turned over driving duties to Pat Daily during the team’s final scheduled pit stop.  Daily continued to build a now substantial lead for the Ridgeline, all the while conserving equipment during a brutal third and final lap.  The Honda Ridgeline Baja Race Truck crossed the finish line in a time of eight hours, 54 minutes, one hour and 15 minutes ahead of the second-place Class 7200 truck.

Powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 produced by Honda Performance Development, the Ridgeline Baja Race Truck features a body designed by Honda R&D Americas’ Los Angeles Design Studio, with inspiration taken from the current Honda Ridgeline, which was also designed and developed by Honda R&D North Americas.  Key design cues drawn from the 2017 Honda Ridgeline can be seen in the front fascia, hood, roof, bed and side profile.

Making approximately 550 horsepower, HPD’s 3.5-liter HR35TT engine uses the same block, cylinder heads and crankshaft as the production V6 engine that powers the all-new Ridgeline.  Additional, custom elements of the powertrain include an HPD-designed intake plenum and custom Engine Control Unit programming.

Photos and information from the Ridgeline Baja Race Truck efforts at the Parker 425 can be viewed on Instagram at @hondaoffroadracing and @proctor_race.  Honda Racing/HPD news and reports can be found on Twitter at https://twitter.com/HondaRacing_HPD and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/HondaRacingHPD.

Jeff Proctor (team owner/driver Ridgeline Baja Race Truck) started 4th, finished 1st in Class 7200 Unlimited V6 Trucks: “It feels so good to get a win for this Honda Ridgeline team at our season opener.  We are so excited to bring this one home for the team.”

Pat Dailey (team manager, driver Ridgeline Baja Race Truck): “I couldn’t be more proud of this entire team, their effort and commitment to earn a win.  Now, the team is now focused on the [next round in the team’s 2018 schedule] 50th anniversary of the Mint 400, on March 10th in Las Vegas.”
