Annual RMHC®/HACER® Scholarship Program Celebrates Three Decades Of Making College Dreams A Reality

0

NEW YORK, June 15, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The 30th edition of the Ronald McDonald House Charities® Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources® (RMHC®/HACER®) Scholarship Program awards luncheon took place on Wednesday, June 14 at Yankee Stadium honoring 16 students with more than $250,000 in scholarship funds. The annual program assists and supports Hispanic high school seniors pursuing higher education. Among the winners was Jamiles Jimenez, recipient of the prestigious $40,000 Rafael Pineda Award, named after the TV personality for his long time support of the program. Ms. Jimenez will pursue a major in computer science education at Queens College in New York.

The RMHC/HACER scholarship program was established by local Hispanic McDonald’s Owner/Operators in the New York Tri-State Area as a way of providing opportunities to Hispanic youth, and to encourage and promote civic responsibility in their communities. To date, the program has awarded almost $8 million in scholarships to more than 1,200 high-school seniors in the New York Tri-State Area.

“For the past 30 years, RMHC/HACER has awarded scholarships to deserving students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, a deep commitment to the community, and a desire to pursue a college degree,” said Ana Madan, Chairman of the local RMHC/HACER Scholarship Program and McDonald’s Owner/Operator. “It is with great pride and dedication that McDonald’s Hispanic owners in the region have worked hard to support this program into the legacy it is today.”

“The RMHC/HACER program was designed to address the reality that many Hispanic students face significant financial barriers to higher education,” said Christopher Perry, Executive Director of RMHC New York Tri-State Area. “We are incredibly proud to offer 16 generous college scholarships this year to help these promising young students achieve their dreams of obtaining a higher education.”

The program received submissions from more than 390 students this year. The 16 scholarship winners were recognized for their educational accomplishments and commitment to the Hispanic community by the RMHC/HACER selection committee, comprised by Hispanic media outlets, community influencers, education professionals, and McDonald’s local owners. For the first time in the scholarship’s history, two of this year’s winners were fraternal twins chosen unknowingly by separate committee members all throughout the selection process.

The awards luncheon featured Katiria Soto, news anchor for Noticias Univision 41 as the master of ceremony and Odalys Molina from Telemundo 47 as the motivational speaker who spoke to the students about overcoming obstacles and the importance of persistence in the face of adversity. During the luncheon, guests were treated to a private performance by “Abigail,” up-and-coming Hispanic performer, and interacted with Ronald McDonald himself. Event attendees included scholarship winners and their families, selection committee members, representatives from RMHC and McDonald’s Corporate, local McDonald’s Owners, and members of the local press. After the ceremony concluded, guests were taken on a private tour of Yankee Stadium, including a stop at Monument Park and New York Yankees Museum.

Latino parents are against children taking on student loans and debt according to MassMutual’s College Planning and Saving Study

0

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts, June 15, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Latino parents are opposed to their children obtaining student loans, listing nine other methods to help pay for college ahead of loans, according to new research from Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual).

Scholarships (43 percent), federal student aid (40 percent), parent savings (36 percent), and starting at a less expensive two-year college (31 percent) top the list of methods, followed by borrowing funds from a retirement account, a 529 plan, a part-time job for their child, work-study programs, and parents borrowing.

Interestingly, while Latinos are one of the most optimistic groups when it comes to the affordability of college, they are also the group that saved nearly the least of any ethnic group surveyed.

This optimism is likely attributed to their higher awareness of more methods to pay for college and cultural beliefs that college doesn’t necessarily have to happen on a strict four-year plan or only at one institution.

Embedded in this optimism may be deep cultural faith that it will all fall into place.

“For Latino parents, the financial security that comes from having a college education is a key factor in their level of confidence in a child’s future happiness and having an open door to opportunities they or their parents did not have,” said David Hufnagel, Latino market director, MassMutual. “College represents a way to better the family’s financial future, parallel to the collective family-oriented behaviors of Latinos.”

MassMutual’s College Planning and Saving study examines the attitudes, behaviors and needs of families related to planning for and funding higher education. The study provides a deeper understanding of the importance placed on education and how ethnicity affects family decisions and financial behavior.

Based on the study’s insights, MassMutual offers three practical tips to help Latino families plan and save for college:

  1. Dream with a plan.   Look at your financial situation today, identify priorities, prepare for the unexpected, and think about how long you have to save for your child’s education. Next, do the math:  determine how much it might cost to send your child to college and how much you can contribute to college savings every month.  There are many tools and calculators to help you figure out how much you need to save. Visit the MassMutual college savings calculator.
  2. Start saving as early as possible.   Start saving as early as you can, even at birth for a child’s education.  Remember that time is on your side to have your money work for you through interest earned and compounded over the years.  With a comprehensive savings strategy, you can help reduce – or possibly eliminate – your child’s need for student loans.  You may even be able to make saving easier through the convenience of payroll deductions. Many employers allow automatic withdrawals to be made from a checking account, with that money being automatically deposited into a savings plan.
  3. Consider all options. There are many ways you can prepare for college costs and you should definitely consider all available options.   From traditional college savings plans, grants, scholarships, two-year college, even life insurance, such as whole life insurance with guaranteed cash value growth. Since your dream of seeing your child graduating from college is not a matter of  “if” but a matter of “how,” make sure you learn how all these components may fit into your child’s education funding plan.

The findings of this research study come on the heels of MassMutual’s launch of its newly refreshed brand, which was designed to better reflect and build on the legacy and the core values that have guided the company since its founding.  The new brand recognizes that while the world celebrates independence, true happiness comes from interdependence and our reliance on one another.

“We’re here to help educate Latino parents about options for their families, and then help them make their financial goals a reality,” concluded Hufnagel.

Methodology

MassMutual’s College Planning and Saving Study was conducted for MassMutual by New American Dimensions, LLC in December 2016 to examine the attitudes and needs of families related to education planning and funding. Qualitatively, 22 mini focus groups were conducted with five ethnic groups (Hispanic/Latino, African American/Black, Chinese American, Korean American, and Asian Indian American) in English and in-language. Quantitatively, a 20-minute online questionnaire, conducted in English, comprised 1,750 interviews; within the total number of surveys, 150 completes were obtained for each of the five ethnic groups. Both qualitative and quantitative research was conducted with men and women age 30 to 64 with children age 5 to 15 for whom they are financially responsible. Respondents also met a minimum household income requirement ($50,000+) and participate in financial decision-making for their household. Results for the total were weighted to the 2010 U.S. Census distributions for ethnicity to be representative of American families in this age and income bracket.

NAMIC Executive Leadership Development Program logo

NEW YORK, June 14, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) is now accepting nominations for its 2017-2018 Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP) Class XVII, presented in partnership with the University of Virginia Darden School of Business.  Targeting upper middle managers of color (directors with a minimum of two years at that level and above), ELDP Class XVII will be presented over seven months, comprising four sessions that will take place in October and December of 2017, and February and May of 2018. The October, December, and May sessions will take place on the Darden grounds in Charlottesville, Virginia. The February session will take place at the Darden site in Washington, DC.  The deadline for submitting nominations for ELDP Class XVII is July 28, 2017.

NAMIC Executive Leadership Development Program logo

ELDP, by which the program is known, was created in response to some of the industry’s most persistent challenges: increasing the diversity of the industry’s executive suites; retention of executives of color; and maximizing the ROI of a diverse workforce in an increasingly global and competitive business environment. Emphasizing professional growth, the program addresses the unique challenges faced by executives of color, while strengthening the competencies that all executives must have in order to be successful.  The ELDP curriculum explores a range of business-critical topics such as strategy, finance, marketing, innovation, and leadership agility, presented as integrated components of a holistic learning experience.

“ELDP has emerged as one of the most respected curricula designed to prepare multicultural professionals to advance in the always evolving media and entertainment industry,” said James C. Jones, NAMIC’s SVP of Education and Diversity Solutions. “With on-going support and partnership from the media and entertainment industry, these dynamic professionals will be guiding the shifts, challenges and pivots of our business.”

In support of NAMIC’s ongoing effort to extend the reach of ELDP, the Walter Kaitz Foundation has provided a fellowship for an eligible executive of color to participate in ELDP Class XVII.  The fellowship will cover all expenses related to attending the program, including tuition, course materials, lodging, meals, and transportation. Candidates must be nominated by small industry MSO’s and programmers that, because of revenue limitations and comparatively a small footprint, do not possess the financial wherewithal to send talented executives through ELDP. The deadline for submitting fellowship nominations is also July 28, 2017.

Complete eligibility information and nomination criteria for the Executive Leadership Development Program can be accessed by visiting namic.com/dev/eldp, or by contacting Jim Jones at 212.594.5985, or via e-mail: [email protected]

MLB Partners with EVERFI to Launch “Summer Slugger,” A New Baseball-Themed Online Course to Help Students in 4th and 5th Grades Retain Math and Literacy Skills

0

NEW YORK, June 14, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — EVERFI and Major League Baseball today announced the national launch of Summer Slugger, a free baseball-themed educational course aimed at preventing students from losing critical math and literacy skills during the summer months.  MLB worked with EVERFI, a digital learning innovator, to create the interactive course that targets 4th and 5th graders.  Summer Slugger is a first-of-its-kind digital platform to address summer learning loss that is offered nationwide.

Logo – https://mma.prnewswire.com/media/523389/EVERFI_Summer_Slugger_Logo.jpg
Photo – https://mma.prnewswire.com/media/523388/EVERFI_word_catcher.jpg

As part of the new relationship, EVERFI becomes an “Official Education Partner of Major League Baseball,” with 14 MLB Clubs joining the initial promotion of the initiative. Parents across the country can access the Summer Slugger program by visiting SummerSlugger.com

MLB’s Chief Baseball Officer and Baseball Hall of Famer Joe Torre today visited students at DREAM Charter School in Harlem, N.Y. to officially launch the new, national program.

MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred Jr said: “We are pleased to announce this digital education platform with our new partners at EVERFI.  Summer Slugger will help address a critical academic issue among young people around the country while also providing a fun, interactive baseball experience for children on their favorite tech devices. The summer months are synonymous with our game and this is a great opportunity to have a positive impact on students through this program.”

Summer Slugger is broken down into 36 total interactive games (10 minutes per game) which cover the following educational topics: units of measure, place value, arithmetic, geometry, spelling, phonemic awareness, vocabulary and comprehension.

Summer Slugger unlocks activities and offers rewards for progress and consistency along the way. Students engage with content that reinforces key foundational and procedural skills while enjoying the freedom and motivation of a digital baseball activity.

Studies show that students lose critical math and literacy skills each summer, thus widening the achievement gap and requiring substantial remediation at the start of each new school year.  75% of U.S. students do not currently participate in summer learning programs. Summer Slugger is an online course that was designed to help prevent this “summer slide” while also allowing the children to have a fun, interactive experience.

“Each fall, teachers spend an average of 6 weeks re-teaching their students old material that was lost during the summer months. This summer slide creates long-term consequences that only widens the achievement gap particularly for students from low-income communities,” said EVERFI CEO Tom Davidson. “EVERFI is proud to team up with Major League Baseball to fill in this critical learning gap through interactive, digital learning. We can’t wait to celebrate the difference Summer Slugger makes in communities all across this country from Harlem to Dallas.”

“DREAM is thrilled to host MLB and EVERFI as they provide digital education opportunities for our scholars to avoid summer learning loss. We have integrated baseball and education in our programs for the past 26 years and we’re excited to use Summer Slugger in order to achieve successful outcomes for youth,” said Richard Berlin, Executive Director, DREAM.

About DREAM

The Type R puts the power down through a short-throw 6-speed manual transmission with helical limited slip differential hooked up to 245/30ZR20 Continental SportContact 6 high-performance tires on 20×8.5-inch black-finished aluminum wheels. Speed is scrubbed by 13.8-inch cross-drilled rotors clamped by 4-piston Brembo aluminum calipers in front and 12.0-inch rotors with single-piston calipers in the rear.

The Type R chassis features a dual-axis strut front suspension and multi-link rear, front and rear anti-roll bars, Type-R exclusive springs, bushings and damper mountings and a newly designed Adaptive Damper System with the ability to continuously adjust damping force at all four corners using input from three on-board G sensors, four suspension stroke sensors and a steering angle sensor.

Yankees Baseball Legend Bernie Williams Raises Awareness of Devastating Lung Disease – IPF – in Honor of his Dad

0

RIDGEFIELD, Connecticut, June 14, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — New York Yankees all-time great Bernie Williams is teaming up with Boehringer Ingelheim to raise awareness of a lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) that his father suffered from for years before he passed away in 2001. Back in Puerto Rico, Williams’ father Bernabé inspired him to play baseball and make it to the Major Leagues. He also taught him to play guitar, which has become Williams’ second career since retiring from baseball.

In honor of his father’s battle with IPF, Williams has joined the Sin Aliento™ campaign to turn his family’s devastating experience with this rare lung disease into a chance to help other families. Williams hopes to educate and empower others who think they may have IPF to seek early diagnosis and treatment and is encouraging people to visit the campaign website www.SinAliento.com – and share the videos and educational Spanish content through social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter using #SinAliento. In addition, they can sign up to the Sin Aliento™ program and receive monthly information in Spanish via e-mail or text messages.

“Whether I was in centerfield or at bat, my dad was always my biggest fan. He seemed invincible. So when he was finally diagnosed with IPF after battling symptoms like breathlessness and a debilitating cough that persisted for many months, it was devastating to me and my family,” said Williams. “Sharing my dad’s story is so important because it will help others get the answers they need sooner and easier.”

IPF is a rare and serious lung disease that causes permanent scarring of the lungs, and makes it difficult to breathe. Symptoms of IPF include breathlessness during activity, a dry and persistent cough, chest discomfort, fatigue and weakness. Although considered “rare,” IPF affects up to 132,000 Americans, and according to the The Lancet, Hispanics are more likely to suffer from the disease with a 15% higher incidence than the general population.* Also, about 50,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed every year with IPF – enough to fill a baseball stadium.

“Boehringer Ingelheim is proud to partner with baseball legend Bernie Williams who can speak personally about how IPF affected his dad and his family,” said Al Masucci, vice president, IPF Business Unit, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. “Through the Sin Aliento™ campaign, we hope to educate people to recognize the signs of the disease and take action to see a doctor as early as possible. It is important that a correct medical diagnosis is determined as IPF is often misdiagnosed.”

The symptoms of IPF are similar to, and often confused with, other more recognizable diseases such chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or congestive heart failure. There are IPF treatments available, including supplemental oxygen, cough management and pulmonary rehabilitation, which can include special exercises or breathing strategies. In 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first drugs specifically indicated for the treatment of IPF.
