Black Henna Tattoos May Put You at Risk.

SILVER SPRING, Md., June 13, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Summer vacation season is here… time to hit the beach and perhaps indulge in a little harmless fun. What about getting a black henna temporary tattoo? Who could it hurt? It could hurt you.

A henna tattoo is temporary but that doesn’t mean it is risk free. This is especially true if you use “black henna,” which can cause serious skin reactions.

For centuries, traditional henna, a reddish-brown plant extract, has been used to dye skin, hair, and fingernails in parts of Asia and Northern Africa. Henna is safe and permitted for coloring the hair, but not for the skin or areas around the eyes.

“Black henna,” a different substance, is marketed for application on the skin’s surface as a form of temporary tattoo, and it is potentially harmful. Inks marketed as “black henna” – or sometimes simply as “henna” – may actually be hair dye or contain other ingredients. The extra ingredient most often used to darken “black” henna is a coal-tar hair dye containing p-phenylenediamine (PPD), which can cause dangerous sensitization reactions in some people. Coal tar hair dyes that contain PPD are required by law to have a caution statement and directions to patch test before use. However, PPD, by law, is not permitted in cosmetics intended for staining the skin.

You may find “black henna” in temporary tattoo kiosks at beaches, boardwalks, holiday destinations, ethnic or specialty shops. States regulate tattooing, but oversight for tattoo parlors and artists differs from state to state. Even though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate practices in tattoo parlors, we do monitor product safety problems.

Too many consumers have learned the risks of “black henna” the hard way. Dozens have reported their adverse events to FDA, but it is believed that many more problems go unreported. Some experienced reactions immediately after the application of “black henna” temporary tattoos; others occurred up to two or three weeks later. Problems included redness, blisters, raised red weeping lesions, loss of pigmentation, increased sensitivity to sunlight, and even permanent scarring. Some reactions have led to emergency room visits and prolonged skin sensitivity. For example, in one incident, a teenage girl’s back was permanently scarred after getting a black henna tattoo.

Some people may experience cross-sensitization, meaning that because of a previous exposure and bad reaction to one chemical, they become sensitized (allergic) to related compounds, such as rubber and other latex products, certain medications, hair dye ingredients, and textile dyes.  When exposed to one of these products they may develop a rash or other allergic manifestations.

If you have a reaction to a temporary tattoo, contact your health care professional. Also, please contact FDA’s Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program (1-800-FDA-1088 or http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/default.htm) or an FDA consumer complaint coordinator (http://www.fda.gov/safety/reportaproblem/consumercomplaintcoordinators). FDA has issued import alerts and warning letters when manufacturers have violated the law. Enforcement can include product seizure and legal actions.

Father’s Day Focus On High Risk For Heart Disease Amongst Hispanic Men And How Fresh Avocados Can Help

0

MISSION VIEJO, California, June 13, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — This Father’s Day (and always), Fresh Avocados – Love One Today® encourages families to take a closer look at the heart health of the men in their care and ways nutrition promotes healthier living. The Center for Disease Control reports that Hispanic men have a higher risk for high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes, which puts them at a greater risk for heart disease, compared to non-Hispanic men. And, in fact, 1 out of 4 Hispanic men dies of stroke or heart disease.1 The good news is that most of the risk factors can be prevented or controlled with education and changes in lifestyle like better nutrition. New Heart-Check certified fresh avocado recipes are now available at LoveOneToday.com to help families fit more fruits and vegetables into a healthy lifestyle as recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA).

PDF – https://mma.prnewswire.com/media/522567/2017_MensHeartHealth_Infographic.pdf

Family members responsible for planning meals, traditionally women in Hispanic households, are urged to take the opportunity to show their love by proactively reducing the risk factors for heart disease each time they shop for groceries. The AHA and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans agree that replacing bad fats (saturated fats) for good fats (unsaturated fats) like those found in fresh avocados is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Further, healthy avocados are a good source of fiber and eating foods rich in fiber has also been linked to reducing the risk of heart disease, obesity and diabetes.

“Hispanic women should feel confident and empowered knowing the fresh avocados in their shopping baskets are doing more for their families beyond delivering great taste,” said Sylvia Melendez-Klinger, registered dietitian and HAB spokesperson. “Fresh avocados are truly a versatile fruit. Not just in the way they can be served, but also in the many health benefits for men and the whole family.”

As radical diet overhauls can be hard to follow, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans emphasizes making small dietary shifts to work towards an overall healthy eating pattern. Simple changes like cooking recipes especially designed to be heart-healthy as well as delicious such as Grilled Chicken Breasts with Fresh Avocado Chimichurri Sauce can help make a difference.

Love One Today® is a science-based food and wellness education program developed to encourage Americans to include fresh avocados in everyday healthy eating plan to help increase fruit and vegetable intake and as a delicious, cholesterol-free, whole food source of naturally good fats. To find more easy-to-prepare AHA Heart-Check certified recipes featuring healthy avocados, please visit LoveOneToday.com and in Spanish at SaboreaUnoHoy.com.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 12, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The San Francisco Deltas and the San Jose Earthquakes, the Bay Area’s two professional soccer teams, will meet in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round on Wednesday, June 14 at Avaya Stadium in San Jose.

“I think the upcoming game between our team and the Quakes is significant because it’s exciting for Bay Area fans to have an opportunity to see soccer played at the highest level between two local teams,” said SF Deltas head coach Marc Dos Santos. “The fans see San Francisco against San Jose as a rivalry and we understand that.”

Fans from both sides have begun to call Wednesday’s contest the “101 Derby” because Highway 101 connects the two cities. A derby is a common term in soccer that refers to a game between two teams from the same town, city or region.

The U.S. Open Cup is a knockout competition in American soccer; the Cup is the third-longest-running open soccer tournament in the world and is the country’s oldest annual team competition. The Cup is open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and consists of eight rounds between May 10 and September 20.

“There’s a lot of pride that comes from clubs playing in the U.S. Open Cup. As an American, it’s fun to have an interleague competition where anything can happen,” said SF Deltas forward Tommy Heinemann. “To play against a team that has a lot of tradition and history will be special for our club.”

This will be the second matchup between the two Bay Area rivals. The Deltas previously won against the Quakes 1-0 in a preseason friendly on February 15. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. at Avaya Stadium. Tickets are available at www.sjearthquakes.com/tickets.

About the SF Deltas
