Bourdais Goes Last to First to Win for Honda at St. Petersburg

PETERSBURG, Florida, March 12, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Sebastien Bourdais and his Dale Coyne Racing team used a fast Honda and perfect race strategy to come from 21st and last on the starting grid to win Sunday’s Verizon IndyCar Series season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

A crash in qualifying on Saturday left Bourdais starting shotgun on the field at the green flag for the 110-lap event, but a series of passes and early caution flags saw him move to 12th after just 10 laps.  Another caution on Lap 25 – in the midst of scheduled first-round pit stops – presented him with a huge opportunity, and Bourdais was quick to take advantage, restarting in second and then passing for the lead on Lap 37.

From there, Bourdais was in control, leading 69 of 110 laps enroute to his 36th career IndyCar victory, moving him to sole possession of 6th on the all-time win’s list.

In his return to Honda with Chip Ganassi Racing, Scott Dixon started from the outside of the front row and was running second to fellow Honda driver James Hinchcliffe in the opening laps. But both were caught out by not having pitted when the Lap 25 caution came out for debris on the circuit following contact between Tony Kanaan and Mikhail Aleshin. A combination of excellent fuel mileage and passes enabled Dixon to recover to third at the checkers.

Ryan Hunter-Reay was another comeback story on the day as he was forced to pit on the opening lap for a mechanical issue.  Fortunately, his Andretti Autosport team was able to make repairs while keeping Hunter-Reay on the lead lap, and he also benefitted from pitting prior to the Lap 25 caution. 

Hunter-Reay then moved through the field from 10th to pass teammate Takuma Sato for fourth place on the final lap.  For his part, Sato led two laps, as Honda drivers led all but 18 laps of the 110-lap event.

Hinchcliffe led 21 laps after starting third for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and passing for the lead on Lap 6.  Having to make his first scheduled stop during the caution dropped him down the order, and he was unable to make significant gains in the second half of the contest.  He finished ninth as Honda drivers claimed seven of the top-10 finishing positions today. 

Rookie Ed Jones ably backed up his victorious Dale Coyne Racing teammate by rounding out the top 10 in his IndyCar Series debut.

[It is very emotional] because it’s the first one [win since joining Dale Coyne Racing and reuniting with many former teammates]. It’s putting the band back together and you don’t know if you’ll have many more days like that.”

Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport Honda) started 12th, finished 4th: “We definitely earned this one. We [pitted to repair] an engine calibration issue early, but stayed on the lead lap. To finish fourth today was just awesome. This DHL Honda team has done a great job all day. To fight back like that, I had to keep coming spot after spot — really earning it, then at the end I got fourth from my teammate [Takuma] Sato. We had a lot of fun out there and it’s great to be back into the swing of things. Hopefully, we can get the team back on the podium where we belong, but fourth place is a good start. This whole Andretti Autosport team has done a great job. We had some great pace, showed good promise.  I’m looking forward to the next race.”

Be The First was introduced in March 2016 and is directed at youth and young adults who currently smoke or are at risk of becoming regular tobacco users; the country’s 3 million elementary school children who, without early tobacco education, may become future tobacco users; and adult smokers who expose children to tobacco use. Since launching the initiative, CVS Health has reached nearly 5 million young people with anti-smoking programming and has helped 20 colleges and universities pursue 100% smoke-and tobacco-free campus policies.

Helping Our Kids “Kick Butts”

As part of the CVS Health Foundation’s five year, $5 million commitment to support the efforts of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the CVS Health Foundation is funding a new online training program with courses to train youth and adults to become tobacco prevention ambassadors. These courses are focused on how tobacco affects youth, including the growing availability of candy-flavored e-cigarettes and cigars, and ways for people to advocate for tobacco-free communities. The announcement of this new resource coincides this week with Kick Butts Day on March 15, the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids’ national day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and mobilize their communities in fighting tobacco use.

Promoting Tobacco-Free College Campuses

As part of Be The First, CVS Health set actionable and measurable goals, including a doubling of the number of tobacco-free educational institutions in the United States. In 2017, the CVS Health Foundation and American Cancer Society will continue to help accelerate the number of colleges and universities that advocate for, adopt and implement a 100% smoke- and tobacco-free campus policy by supporting more than 50 new schools in their tobacco control efforts. This spring, the CVS Health Foundation and Truth Initiative, the national public health organization that leads truth, the nation’s largest youth tobacco prevention campaign, will announce an expanded partnership to help Historically Black Colleges and Universities and community colleges across the country adopt 100% tobacco-free policies. This effort is especially relevant because African-American and low-income communities have been the target of tobacco industry marketing for decades. 

Raising Awareness Across Communities

To increase awareness and advocacy in the communities it serves, CVS Health and the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE are teaming up in the fight against tobacco to win the battle against lung cancer. The campaign, which will launch in May, will give customers an easy way to spread tobacco-free messaging in their communities and take advantage of tobacco-free resources for their towns, schools and public areas.

Delivering Smoking Cessation Services to Cancer Patients

CVS Health is also continuing its focus on supporting community-based cessation programs for adult smokers, who cause damage to their own health, as well as expose children to tobacco use and secondhand smoke. Later this year, Later this year, the CVS Health Foundation, through a partnership with the National Cancer Institute, will invest nearly $1 million to address smoking cessation in the oncology setting across several of the nation’s leading cancer hospitals.

Smartphone App Helps Undocumented Immigrants With ICE Raids

The Cell 411 app alerts trusted contacts of neighborhood events, family emergencies and police raids

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 13, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — A new smartphone app is now available in Spanish and to a whole new audience: undocumented immigrants who may need help before, during and after a raid from ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).

The free app, called Cell 411 is a smartphone app available for Android and iOS; it allows users to organize themselves in regional “cells” or groups which are decentralized and managed by the users themselves. This allows users who are in distress to alert other members of their cells of the nature of their problem and the exact location where they need help.  When sending out an alert, the user’s GPS coordinates are broadcast to their trusted friends with turn by turn direction to their location.  This allows in essence for the crowd-sourcing of emergencies without the involvement of police, which are often not trusted by communities of immigrants and minorities.

The startup, Cell 411 Inc. was founded by Virgil Vaduva, who is an immigrant himself, after being arrested during an anti-police brutality protest after which he had no means to alert his family and friends of what happened and his whereabouts. The app was built as a decentralized means of helping communities and neighborhoods organize themselves to offer each other mutual aid in case of emergencies without asking for assistance from government, police and other state agencies.

The app allows users to send emergency alerts about medical problems, police abuse, vehicle problems, crime, and other issues; the alerts are tagged with exact GPS coordinates and friends can get turn-by-turn directions to users’ location, should they decide to come and offer help.  Users can stream live video to their cells, and the video cannot be erased by a malicious user who may gain access to their smart phone.  The video can also be streamed to YouTube and Facebook and is distributed instantly to all friends, making it virtually impossible to be destroyed or erased through censorship.

Last year the company introduced a bluetooth panic button, which can be worn on a wrist, key-chain or a belt clip and allows users to send our an emergency alert much faster, without having to unlock or touch their smart phone.

National Alliance for Hispanic Health Joins “Friends of the Court” Brief in Support of City of Philadelphia Sugary Drink Tax and Healthy Communities

I am confident that the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania will rule instead in favor of the health and well-being of the residents of Philadelphia,” said Dr. Jane L. Today, the Alliance and a diverse group of partners filed an amicus brief with the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania in support of a 1.5 cents per ounce sugary beverages tax (levied on distributors of sweetened beverages) that went into effect on January 1, 2017. The brief cited scientific literature on the contribution of sugary drinks to obesity and chronic disease such as diabetes, targeted marketing to youth and racial and ethnic groups, and reduction of sugary drink consumption as part of a strategy for improved community health. The brief also argues forcefully for the right of the elected members of the Philadelphia City Council to govern for the public’s health and welfare.
