FARMINGTON, Connecticut, Sept. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — CliniSanitas Medical Centers and ConnectiCare have formed a strategic alliance to offer an innovative, multicultural, health care delivery model for the people of Connecticut; particularly the growing Hispanic population. CliniSanitas Medical Centers are part of a leading multinational health business group operating in Florida and several South American countries.

Beginning in late November, ConnectiCare members will have access to three new CliniSanitas Medical Centers in Connecticut. The new medical centers will be located in Newington, Bridgeport and Orange and will offer primary care, specialty care, urgent care, walk-in care, laboratory and diagnostic imaging services, as well as health education and wellness services. All will offer extended evening and weekend hours and the staff will speak both English and Spanish. ConnectiCare is the only health insurance plan being accepted by the CliniSanitas Medical Centers, which will also serve those paying directly for health care services.

As Connecticut’s population grows and diversifies, it is essential that the delivery of health care address the cultural differences present so all citizens get the care they need. To improve access to quality care, the CliniSanitas patient experience will be 100 percent bilingual, starting with the medical team and support staff, educational materials, the patient portal and disease and wellness outreach programs. To foster a strong and long-lasting doctor-patient relationship, the appointment intervals are scheduled so doctors can spend more time with their patients.

“Health care is very personal and having a good relationship with your doctor is essential. Members want to discuss their health and receive care in their preferred language, at times and locations that are convenient for them. CliniSanitas has a proven track record of successfully serving a diverse population through an integrated care model and we are pleased to partner with them to make this kind of care a reality for ConnectiCare members,” said Michael Wise, ConnectiCare’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

“We’re excited to partner with a leading health care company like ConnectiCare to bring our proven model of patient-centered care to Connecticut. These new medical centers will build on our successful centers in Miami, Florida, and more than 40 years of experience providing quality care in South America,” said Dr. Fernando Fonseca, Chief Executive Officer of CliniSanitas. “We have designed our patient experience to serve the diverse needs of the Connecticut community and address cultural and language barriers that impact the quality of care they receive.”

“We commend ConnectiCare for making strides in meeting the diverse needs of their health exchange clients,” said Governor Dannel Malloy. “ConnectiCare has been a valuable partner in the effort to build a healthier state and a better marketplace for us all.”

Joseph Gallo Farms Moves Closer To Becoming Net-Zero Energy Dairy Farm

ATWATER, California, Sept. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Joseph Gallo Farms, maker of Joseph Farms Cheese, unveiled a new 2 megawatt (MW) solar array, the largest privately owned system ever installed on a California dairy. The fixed-array system supplies renewable energy on-site for the family’s dairy farm.

“Sustainable farming has been a core value in our family starting with my grandfather, Joseph Gallo,” said third-generation dairy farmer and cheesemaker Peter Gallo. “We’ve envisioned integrating solar energy on the farm for as long as I can remember, and today is a step towards greater sustainability.”

By harvesting the sun’s power on 7,840 solar panels on 8 acres, the fixed-array system provides on-site renewable energy that will significantly reduce its need for electricity from the local utility and avoid an estimated 27,500 metric tons of CO2 emissions over the next 20 years. This reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is equal to planting more than 706,000 trees in the next 20 years or removing more than 292 cars from the road annually. The amount of power produced could power 282 average homes a year.

The deployment of the 2 MW solar array helps carry out Governor Brown’s renewable energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals and initiatives, including: AB 32 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, SB 32 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and SB 350 to increase renewable energy generation to 50 percent by 2030.

“This project aligns with the work we’ve been doing for 13 years to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and transition to green, renewable energy that is generated right here on our farm,” says Gallo.

Joseph Gallo Farms is a pioneer in sustainable farming practices in California. In addition to the new solar array, Joseph Gallo Farms also operates one of the largest and longest-running methane digesters in California, which captures biogas from cow manure and then uses the biogas to fuel generators to produce energy. The electricity produced by this renewable “cow power” is used on-site and significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and decreases the farm’s dependence on fossil fuels.

“Our new solar array meets about half of our energy needs for our dairy and farming operations,” Gallo said. “Partnered with our existing methane digester, we’re moving closer to becoming a net-zero energy dairy farm and cheese plant, continuing a long tradition of pioneering renewable energy deployment and sustainability practices.”

SolarCity, the nation’s largest solar power provider, installed the solar power system.

“Joseph Gallo Farms has long been a leader in sustainable dairy farming and cheesemaking, especially when it comes to producing and utilizing renewable, green energy,” said Erik Fogelberg, SolarCity’s Senior Vice President of Commercial PV & Storage Solutions. “We are proud to help further expand that capability and meet their environmental goals, all while helping them save on their energy costs.”

Gallo’s vision of complete sustainability has transitioned from a single project to an overall program, and while the solar array is the latest step, it’s certainly not the last.

“We’re always looking to the future to improve our environmental performance on the farm and at the cheese plant. It’s our family’s commitment to our customers, neighbors and planet,” says Gallo.

About Joseph Gallo Farms

Joseph Gallo Farms/Joseph Farms Cheese, family farmed since 1946, is a dairy, cheese-making, and whey business in the small community of Atwater in the heart of California’s San Joaquin Valley. The Gallo family’s focus on sustainability and quality includes a new solar array system, methane-powered cheese plant and award-winning innovative environmental programs. The family dairy is Environmentally Certified by the California Dairy Quality Assurance Program and Joseph Farms was the first U.S. cheesemaker to label their products with an FDA approved Artificial Hormone Free guarantee. The family has provided nearly 8,000 acres of land to the San Luis Wildlife Refuge, a critical habitat for waterfowl and other threatened wildlife species, and restored more than 2,700 acres of their own land to upland and wetland wildlife habitat.

Joseph Gallo Farms’ history of environmental innovation and sustainability leadership:

  • 2014: U.S. Dairy Sustainability Award for “Outstanding Dairy Processing and Manufacturing Sustainability”
  • 2012: Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA), California’s highest environmental honor.

NEW YORK, Sept. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Stephen Kahn, M.D., President of the Abundance Foundation, reported the successful completion of their 2010 Global Health Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Commitment to Action at the 2016 CGI Annual Meeting. “The Abundance Foundation is a small, nimble philanthropic catalyst for global health systems change,” said Dr. Kahn. “CGI has provided opportunities that allowed us to develop partnerships that extended our reach and profoundly impacted global health education, training, and delivery.” ‘

The multi-faceted Abundance Project for Global Health helped build on-the-ground capacity to respond to emergencies, and treat and prevent disease through medical education and health system strengthening around the globe.  The Project increased opportunities for the training of global health professionals, supported breakthrough research, and increased accessibility to information for medical professionals worldwide.

Over the past six years, the Abundance Foundation has identified gaps in global health care delivery and funded innovative solutions to closing them while working to empower a new generation of health care leaders who will be able to implement solutions and deliver better care. The foundation supported research into the containment of epidemics such as cholera and Ebola, programs to provide advanced training for global medical professionals and interventions to reduce disparities in healthcare. Its programmatic successes include:

  • Crucial Early Support for Ebola Research: Early in the Ebola crisis, Abundance Foundation partnered with the Harvard Medical School Global Health Research Core, ensuring funding for research, published in The Lancet, that showed how to accurately diagnose Ebola patients within minutes. With bedside diagnostics as easy to use as a pregnancy test, this finding has had a major impact on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of Ebola.
  • Cholera Vaccinations in Haiti: After the devastating earthquake in Haiti created the perfect storm for a cholera epidemic, Dr. Louise Ivers successfully vaccinated 100,000 Haitians against the disease and changed the way the infectious disease community looks at cholera control with her research published in The Lancet.
  • Creating World-class Health Education in Rwanda: The Rwanda Human Resources for Health program (HRH) program created a sustainable, world-class health education structure for training and retaining highly skilled and diverse medical professionals in Rwanda. When President Clinton announced the Rwanda Human Resources for Health Program (HRH) at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) in 2012, he honored Chief Abundance Partner Corrado Cancedda, M.D. Ph.D. among others, for his role in the development of this program. Of the HRH program President Clinton said, “I think it is one of the most important commitments ever announced at CGI.”
  • Global Mental Health: Giuseppe Raviola, M.D. Director of Mental Health for Partners In Health, said: “The Abundance Foundation’s investment in global mental health care delivery and research led to an infinite number of positive developments in terms of fostering new, major, government-run national mental health initiatives in a number of countries and the development of over 50 careers in mental health service delivery and research for implementers working in low income countries. All of this work, taken together, led to needed, lifesaving mental health services for more than 20,000 people in Haiti, Rwanda, and elsewhere.”
  • Innovative Harvard Medical School Master’s Programs: In order to build local capacity and leadership in resource-limited countries, Abundance Foundation partnered with Harvard Medical School to develop a Masters of Medical Science in Global Health Delivery (MMSc-GHD). A rigorous cross-university curriculum focused on social and delivery science and policy research in resource-limited settings, the program contributes to global health scholarship while enhancing the quality of health care delivery and training available in countries including Haiti, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone.
  • Emergency Medicine Residency in Haiti: Emergency and Family Medicine Residency programs built capacity and local leadership by training physicians and nurses with especially robust programs in the emergency department at the new Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais.
  • Free Access to Life-Saving Medical Reference Tools: Investment in the Global Health Delivery Project at Harvard University (GHD) has helped create the premier online space, GHDonline, where health professionals throughout the world can connect. With over 20,000 participants representing 168 countries, GHDonline plays an essential role in health care delivery knowledge dissemination, learning and training. Furthermore, in partnership with UpToDate, the Global Health Delivery Project provided free access to world-class evidence-based clinical resources to 20,000+ clinicians in 20+ institutions in 60+ countries, caring for more than 25 million patients per year. This program has led to an ongoing pilot that aims to provide every medical school in Africa with these essential digital medical training tools.
  • Unique Partnerships between Harvard Graduate Students and Community Health Centers: The Agents of Change program was designed to address health inequities by challenging students across Harvard’s graduate schools to create cross-disciplinary teams and develop partnerships with community health centers in order to develop out-of-the-box solutions for empowering marginalized and economically disadvantaged communities.

“At the very heart of the success of this commitment are exceptional individuals with a relentless dedication to improving the world around them,” said Dr. Kahn. “Please join me, in continuing to support these same individuals to end the ongoing transmission of cholera in Haiti, and to ensure that Ebola, Zika and other emerging disease are confronted where and when they emerge.”

According to Chief Abundance Partner Corrado Cancedda, M.D. Ph.D., “The Abundance Foundation gave me the freedom to dare, be creative, think, and most importantly, act outside the box to change the status quo and to focus on being a change agent in Rwanda and Sierra Leone.”

“The Abundance Foundation is continuing to develop innovative partnerships to advance Global Health Education.” said Dr. Kahn. “Our new Costa Rica Initiative, in cooperation with the Interamerican Center for Global Health, will identify and train the next generation of global health leaders and advance the knowledge of medical professionals who can develop creative solutions to today’s most pressing global health issues.”

The Abundance Foundation believes that it is not only important to find new ways to address global health needs, but equally important to develop medical education programs that are sustainable and provide opportunities for training future generations of doctors, nurses, mental health providers, and public health experts.

By investing at the intersection of Health, Empowerment, and Arts and Education, the Abundance Foundation is transforming community systems to support healthy individuals. The Abundance Foundation works with our partners to transform scarcity to abundance.  To learn more, please visit the website at www.abundance.org

You’re Still Hooked and Netflix Knows Why

You're Still Hooked and Netflix Knows Why

BEVERLY HILLS, California, Sept. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Netflix releases the latest set of hooked episodes* and it turns out nothing brings the world together like thrilling mysteries, young love, family drama and criminal behavior. Also, dogs…

You're Still Hooked and Netflix Knows Why

The world’s leading Internet TV network expanded last year’s research to look at more than 30 additional series** on a global scale (viewing spanned six continents) to pinpoint the episode that took watchers from casual to committed – that is, the episode that kept 70% of viewers watching through a first season’s end. In doing so, Netflix discovered viewing behavior – and fandom – is quite universal. Regardless of whether they live in Argentina or Japan, members are not only getting hooked on similar episodes, but identifying with similar storylines.

Fear of the unknown turned watchers upside down for Stranger Things (Where’s Will, where’s Barb and what’s a Demogorgon?!; episode 2) and had them bewitched with American Horror Story: Murder House (The dead roam freely on All Hallows’ Eve; episode 4). The underworld of political corruption, whether it’s Pablo Escobar’s thirst for power in Colombia or Robert Taro’s fight to keep it in France, had members addicted to both Narcos and Marseille by episode 3. Unsurprisingly, the curiosity of criminality had members arrested to The Fall (Paul Spector proves murder is not a spectator sport; episode 2), Prison Break (Michael finds staying alive in prison is harder than breaking out; episode 3) and Making A Murderer (Brendan Dassey is interrogated; episode 4).

However, not all hooked moments were dark or deadly. Love was the key to get viewers falling for Gilmore Girls (Rory’s first kiss!; episode 7), Jane the Virgin (Jane rekindles an old flame, episode 7) and Grey’s Anatomy (Meredith gets steamy with McDreamy in an elevator; episode 2). Relationships of the familial kind had members relating to The Get Down (Mylene’s future hits a high note, but her relationship with her father hits a new low, episode 2), Club de Cuervos (Chava derails plans for the Iglesias soccer dynasty; episode 4) and The Ranch (The only thing bigger than Colt’s ego is Beau’s stubbornness; episode 3). A mix of the two is what worked for Fuller House when puppy Cosmo rounds out the Tanner clan in episode 4.

“We’ve always believed there is a universality to great stories. The Internet allows us to share these stories with a global audience and what we see from the data is how similar our members watch and respond,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix. “The hooked findings give us confidence that there is an appetite for original and unique content all over the world, which is why we’re excited to deliver variety in stories to our members, whether they’re political dramas from France or musical dramas from the Bronx.”

According to the research, here are the global episodes where members got hooked:

*Methodology:
The data in this research was pulled from Netflix member accounts who started watching season one of the selected series from January 2015 to August 2016 for Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Chile, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Sweden, UK and US and January 2016 to August 2016 for Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, and UAE. A hooked episode was defined when 70% of viewers who watched that episode went on to complete season one of the same series. Hooked episodes were first identified by country, then averaged to create the global hooked episode. The hooked episode had no correlation to total viewership numbers or season attrition. While the Netflix research did confirm episodes, it didn’t indicate specific plot points.

Alzheimer’s Projections for U.S. Latino Population Indicates Intensifying Public Health Crisis, with Estimated $2.35 Trillion Cumulative Impact by 2060

0

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Unless a medical breakthrough is discovered that prevents, cures or slows the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, the incidence and cost of Alzheimer’s on U.S. Latinos will grow exponentially by 2060, according to a report released today by the USC Edward R. Roybal Institute on Aging at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work and LatinosAgainstAlzheimer’s, a network of UsAgainstAlzheimer’s.

According to the report, “Latinos & Alzheimer’s Disease: New Numbers Behind the Crisis,” U.S. Latinos living with Alzheimer’s disease are projected to increase from 379,000 in 2012 to 1.1 million by 2030 and to 3.5 million by 2060 – a growth of 832 percent. In addition, the report released unprecedented findings on the cumulative direct and indirect costs of Alzheimer’s disease on the U.S. Latino community, including millions of family caregivers, which would ultimately cost the U.S. economy $373 billion by 2030 and $2.35 trillion (in 2012 dollars) by 2060.

“This timely report provides strong evidence of the rapidly escalating burden of Alzheimer’s disease on the U.S. Latino population,” said William Vega, co-author of the report and executive director of the USC Roybal Institute on Aging. “It is not only the growth of the prevalence that is concerning. It is also the very high metabolic syndrome and diabetes rates that are fueling the increase in Alzheimer’s to levels well beyond expected rates in the U.S. population.”

The report’s data sparks renewed urgency to address health care disparities affecting minorities, particularly U.S. Latinos. Because of advanced aged and socioeconomic determinants, U.S. Latinos are 50 percent more likely to get Alzheimer’s than non-Latino whites, yet are less likely to receive a diagnosis from a physician. Despite an increased prevalence for Alzheimer’s and other diseases, clinical trial participation among U.S. Latinos is extremely low at approximately one percent, punctuating the need for increased efforts to engage U.S. Latinos in clinical research.

As outlined in the report, the direct cost of Alzheimer’s includes expenditures for medical and long-term care, while indirect costs include unpaid informal care and earnings lost by people with Alzheimer’s disease. While U.S. Latinos are more likely to seek care options that are more affordable than non-Latino white Americans – for example, choosing adult day care vs. nursing home care – the total cost of Alzheimer’s on U.S. Latinos will still outpace the cost for non-Latino whites.

“Latinos living with Alzheimer’s disease rely more heavily on informal care than more expensive options like nursing home care,” said Shinyi Wu, co-author of the report and senior scientist at the USC Roybal Institute on Aging and an associate professor at the USC School of Social Work. “Due to demographic and family structure shifts among Latinos, there will be a lower ratio of younger generations able to take care of older generations living with Alzheimer’s, placing significant societal and economic stress on Latinos.”

“Caring for my mother with Alzheimer’s is draining, but I know that it is the most important job I’ve ever done,” said Daisy Duarte, a caregiver and advocate for the LatinosAgainstAlzheimer’s Network. “Every penny I earn goes to my mother’s care, and sometimes I feel like my dreams are slipping away. I have hope, but we need help, and we need a cure.”

A goal of the report is to make sure the nation is prepared to address these disparities. To that end, the authors outlined a host of solutions that need immediate action, including:

  • Increasing research funding for Alzheimer’s to at least $2 billion annually, the level experts recommended in 2013 was the minimum needed to develop an effective treatment.
  • Collaborating with government, community, philanthropic, health and industry partners on developing and implementing culturally tailored community engagement and education efforts to promote Alzheimer’s and brain health literacy and early detection among individuals, families and community stakeholders.
  • Improving access to caregiver resources and informal training for caregivers in multiple languages.

“Latino families are increasingly in the crosshairs of this growing public health crisis and are among the least resourced to deal with the financial demand Alzheimer’s places on households and on family caregivers,” said Jason Resendez, a co-author of the report and executive director of the LatinosAgainstAlzheimer’s Network and Coalition. “As the U.S. Latino older adult population grows dramatically over the next 30 years, Alzheimer’s will have far reaching implications for our nation’s healthcare system and economy if nothing is done to curb its devastating effects.”

NEW YORK, Sept. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Columbia University and NewYork-Presbyterian today announced that their shared medical campus in Washington Heights will be named for generous donors Herbert and Florence Irving and will now be called Columbia University Herbert and Florence Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

The institutions installed a banner on the pedestrian footbridge across Ft. Washington Avenue south of 168th Street announcing the campus’s new name.

In a joint message, Columbia President Lee C. Bollinger, NewYork-Presbyterian President and CEO Steven J. Corwin, MD, and Columbia University Medical Center Chief Executive and Dean Lee Goldman, MD, noted that, through their longstanding and continuing philanthropy to the University and Hospital, the Irvings have played an essential role in advancing one of the leading academic medical centers in the nation and world.

Herbert and Florence Irving are among the most generous benefactors in the history of our combined institutions,” said Bollinger, Corwin and Goldman in their joint announcement. “Their support is a reflection of their personal commitment to saving lives and treating disease through pioneering research and the highest quality, most compassionate clinical care.”

The Irving name is already a familiar part of Columbia and the NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, which is home to the Herbert Irving Pavilion, the Irving Cancer Research Center, the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, the Irving Radiation Oncology Center, the Irving Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as a long list of named professorships, faculty chairs, and clinical and research facilities. The Irvings’ donations and commitments over time to Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian will exceed $300 million.

Most recently, the Irvings donated new gifts to support Columbia’s precision medicine initiative which, in partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian, is addressing the genetic and genomic basis of cancer and other life-altering diseases. The Irvings’ support will help position this initiative at the Medical Center to be at the forefront of genomics, data science, and the core science and engineering disciplines essential to this emerging path to fighting and curing cancer.

“One of the proudest things we’ve done over the years,” said Herbert and Florence Irving, “has been to support the terrific doctors at Columbia and NewYork-Presbyterian. This is a relationship that has endured for many years and been very important to us. We are honored to be associated in this way with these great institutions and the special people who make them what they are.”

Both born and raised in Brooklyn, Herbert and Florence Irving have played a leading role in philanthropy and service in their generous support for Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian’s Columbia campus. Herbert Irving is a co-founder and former vice chairman of Sysco Corporation, the nation’s largest food distributor. Florence Irving has served in leadership positions on the boards of several non-profit institutions, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art where she is a trustee emeritus. They have been married for 74 years.

“The new name announced today is a testament to the Irvings’ inspiring example and the lofty goals they have long shared with Columbia University, its medical center, and NewYork-Presbyterian,” said the joint announcement.
