Ophthalmologists Warn of Five Frightening Risks of Wearing Contact Lenses Without a Prescription

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Zombie or devil contact lenses may elevate a Halloween costume’s fright factor, but wearing them without a prescription could result in something far more terrifying – blindness. This is why the American Academy of Ophthalmology is urging Halloween shoppers to understand the risks of wearing over-the-counter contact lenses.

While it is illegal to sell non-prescription contact lenses, they can still be easily purchased at many places such as beauty supply stores, costume shops and on the web. Falsely advertised as “one-size-fits-all” or “no prescription necessary,” these lenses can cause serious eye damage. Last year, one girl became partially blind in her left eye, the top layer of her cornea having been ripped off, after a mere four hours of wearing non-prescription contact lenses she bought at a jewelry booth.

Ophthalmologists – the physicians and surgeons that specialize in medical and surgical eye care – are reminding people of five frightening consequences of ignoring the warnings:

  1. Scratches to the eye – If contacts are not professionally fitted to your eye, they can scratch the clear front window of the eye. This is called a corneal abrasion, which is not only painful, but can cause permanent damage. Just ask Laura Butler, who was in severe pain due to corneal abrasions 10 hours after putting in non-prescription lenses, which “stuck to my eye like suction cups.” Treatment often involves medication and patching, but in some cases damage cannot be reversed. Butler now lives with a corneal scar, vision damage and a drooping eyelid.
  2. Infection – Research shows wearing non-prescription contacts increases the risk of an infection called keratitis by 16 times.[1] Early treatment with antibiotic or steroid drops may preserve vision, but sometimes surgery, such as corneal transplantation, is necessary. Robyn Rouse had to have that surgery after she got an infection after wearing non-prescription lenses she bought at a local store. Twelve years later, she still has blurry vision in her left eye and uses daily drops to combat dry eye.
  3. Pink eye – Never share contacts because doing so can spread germs, causing conditions such as pink eye. Highly contagious, pink eye treatment depends on the cause, but typically includes antibiotic drops.
  4. Decreased vision – Whether from a corneal scratch or infection, wearing non-prescription contacts can lead to decreased vision.
  5. Blindness – It’s no scare tactic: wearing non-prescription contacts can lead to permanent vision loss. Julian Hamlin has had more than 10 surgeries and is now legally blind in his left eye after wearing contacts to change his eye color, a mistake he’ll live with forever.

“One night of the perfect Halloween costume isn’t worth risking your vision,” said Thomas L. Steinemann, M.D., a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “If you must have contact lenses to complete your costume, avoid over-the-counter ones at all costs. Protect your vision by getting prescription lenses from an eye health professional.”

The Academy encourages the public to watch and share its “No Prescription, No Way” public service announcement that shows the serious damage that these non-prescription costume contact lenses can inflict on the eyes.

AT&T Labs’ Project AirGig Nears First Field Trials for Ultra-Fast Wireless Broadband Over Power Lines

0
AT&T Inc.

DALLAS, Sept. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — AT&T* unveiled today Project AirGig, a transformative technology from AT&T Labs that could one day deliver low-cost, multi-gigabit wireless internet speeds using power lines.

We’re deep in the experimentation phase. This technology will be easier to deploy than fiber, can run over license-free spectrum and can deliver ultra-fast wireless connectivity to any home or handheld wireless device. We designed Project AirGig literally from the ground up to be both practical and transformational. Our initial and ongoing testing at AT&T outdoor facilities has been positive. We expect to kick off our first field trials in 2017.

“Project AirGig has tremendous potential to transform internet access globally – well beyond our current broadband footprint and not just in the United States,” said John Donovan, Chief Strategy Officer and Group President, Technology and Operations, AT&T. “The results we’ve seen from our outdoor labs testing have been encouraging, especially as you think about where we’re heading in a 5G world. To that end, we’re looking at the right global location to trial this new technology next year.”

Growing global internet connectivity with Project AirGig
AT&T has more than 100 patents or patent applications supporting this new technology and other access technologies. We think Project AirGig is unlike anything that’s out there. We’re experimenting with multiple ways to send a modulated radio signal around or near medium-voltage power lines. There’s no direct electrical connection to the power line required and it has the potential of multi-gigabit speeds in urban, rural and underserved parts of the world. Project AirGig delivers this last-mile access without any new fiber-to-the-home and it is flexible enough to be configured with small cells or distributed antenna systems. No need to build new towers. No need to bury new cables in the ground.

As part of Project AirGig, AT&T Labs invented low-cost plastic antennas and devices located along the power line to regenerate millimeter wave (mmWave) signals that can be used for 4G LTE and 5G multi-gigabit mobile and fixed deployments. These patent-pending devices can mean low hardware and deployment costs while maintaining the highest signal quality. We think we’ve come up with an approach that we believe will be unique in our industry.

Project AirGig can also be a benefit to utility companies. It could enable and expand a variety of smart-grid applications. It could also allow for early detection of line integrity issues, such as encroaching tree branches. Power companies could use it to pinpoint specific locations, down to the line segment, where proactive maintenance could prevent problems. It could also support utility companies’ meter, appliance and usage control systems. It has the potential to be a win for our customers and a win for the utility companies.

Connecting Everyone
Today’s announcement of Project AirGig is a huge step forward in how we innovate around connecting people everywhere they live, work and play. It’s the latest step in an ongoing journey. We’re bringing connectivity to people in ways that few companies can. Today we have fiber connecting more people, buildings and business customer locations than anyone else. We’re using more than 1 million miles of the AT&T fiber network to deliver faster wired and wireless speeds to more locations. And we’re tying it all together with a software-centric approach built for the future.

  • Wired: We’re delivering 1 gigabit per second speeds over fiber in 29 markets today with plans to expand more by year end. We’re also conducting technology trials over millimeter wave, next-generation fixed wireless and G.Fast technology to drive greater speeds and efficiencies in our new and existing copper and fiber networks. This gives us the potential to expand internet service beyond our existing wireline footprint.
  • Wireless: We’re very excited about the continued evolution of 4G LTE and 5G networks over the next few years. We’ve been deploying 4G LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) in markets across the United States since early 2014 and today cover the vast majority of customers in our LTE coverage area. This means faster 4G LTE data speeds and greater network capacity for the customer. We’re teaming up with global technology leaders to align on 5G standards for faster 5G deployment. And we’re already doing 5G trials with fixed and mobile outdoor and lab testing.
  • Software Defined: Traditionally, we relied on specialized hardware like routers, switches and firewalls to move voice calls and data across our network. These devices were reliable, but not ideal for today’s data and video usage, which demand faster and less cumbersome solutions. So we’re moving to software. Just like consumers have replaced CD players with streaming music apps on their phones, we’re turning our network gear into virtual software running on standard servers. And we’re giving our customers more control over their own network services. It’s fast, resilient and flexible. We plan to virtualize 75% of our network by 2020, the most aggressive pace in the industry.

“We believe Project AirGig has the potential to quickly bring connectivity to all parts of the world. Our researchers are addressing the challenges that hampered similar approaches a decade ago, such as megabit per second speeds and high deployment costs,” said Donovan. “Project AirGig is still very much in the experimentation phase. That said, I’m excited about what AT&T Labs’ engineers have developed to date. Our overall access approach, in conjunction with our software-defined network architecture, is unmatched in its ability to usher in connected experiences like augmented reality, virtual reality, self-driving cars, telemedicine and 4K mobile video. Big urban city. Small rural town. Around the world.”

We look forward to sharing more soon on trials and details around the technology.

NHTSA Highlights Seat Belts and Car Seats during Child Passenger Safety Week

0

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — As Child Passenger Safety Week (September 18-24) kicks off, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urging the public to make sure children are properly buckled up in the correct car seat for their size and age.

Experience the interactive Multimedia News Release here: https://www.multivu.com/players/English/7927851-ad-council-find-the-right-seat

“Risking the safety of future generations by letting children ride unrestrained is not acceptable,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.  “Seat belts and car seats save lives, and need to be used on every trip.”

The just-released NHTSA 2015 National Survey of the Use of Booster Seats shows 37.4 percent of children ages 4 to 7 in the United States were not being properly restrained. Of that number, 25.8 percent were restrained by seat belts and 11.6 percent were unrestrained. 13.6 percent of children from 1 to 3 years old were prematurely transitioned to booster seats, a significant increase from the prior year.

Hispanic and African American children tended to have lower restraint use.  Restraint use in the Hispanic 1 to 12 year old age group was lower than the national average, and non-Hispanic African American children 8 to 12 years old had the lowest restraint use across all age groups at 72.4 percent.

“When children are not buckled up or are riding in a seat that isn’t used correctly, their safety is in jeopardy,” said NHTSA Administrator Dr. Mark Rosekind. “You can act by making sure your kids are buckled up and in the right car seats for their age and size.  This week, and on National Seat Check Saturday, free public events will be held across the country.  Help keep them safe, today and every day by attending a car seat inspection event near you.”

During Child Passenger Safety Week and National Seat Check Saturday (September 24), hundreds of safety events will be held across the U.S.  Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be on the ground to check car seats, educate parents and caregivers about proper installation and will help consumers register their car seats to ensure they will be notified in case of a recall.  Additional information on seat check events, how to find the right car seat, and how to install and register them for recalls is available here.

CNET en Español Pays Tribute To The Most Influential Latinos In American Technology

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — To help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, CNET en Español, CNET’s Spanish-language sister site, today pays tribute to the technology contributions of Latinos in America by announcing its annual list of the top 20 most influential Latinos in technology for 2016. The list, which includes 18 new executives as well as a record number of women (nine total), is made up of Latinos with a broad range of experience and skills that are leading teams in high-profile tech companies in the U.S. From Apple to LinkedIn to NASA, the list of senior executives is reflective of the accomplishments and impact of the Latino community on technology.

“Latinos continue to play a growing and more influential role in the make-up of American society,” said Gabriel Sama, managing editor of CNET en Español. “That growth and influence is aligned with the explosion of technology, and this list is designed to acknowledge the impact Latinos are making with the products and services that are shaping the way we live in today’s highly connected and technical world. We congratulate this year’s executives.”

Selected by the CNET en Español editorial staff, the list is comprised of professionals in STEM or creative fields that meet the following criteria: born in Spain or Latin America, or in the U.S. of Hispanic origin; working in the U.S. or at a company with operations in the country; and in senior positions and involved in the decision-making processes or play key creative roles in the technology space.

Eddy Cue, Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Service at Apple, who’s on the list for the second time, tells CNET en Español: “My parents wanted me to be more successful than they were. And I think that’s a great attribute. I want that for my kids. So I owe them a great deal for that. And they taught me a lot about all the principles of hard work. Both my parents worked a lot of hours.”

“To be recognized a second time is an exceptional honor, not only for me personally, but also for my VRLab team,” said Evelyn Miralles, Principal Engineer Innovator at the Virtual Reality Laboratory at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, where she has worked on virtual reality for 24 years. “As a businesswoman with a passion for STEM advancement, it is an esteemed acknowledgment that helps to further my efforts.” Miralles is on the list for the second consecutive year.
