BROOKLYN, New York, Aug. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — For the second consecutive year, the HITN-TV / KIDS FIRST! Film Critics Boot Camp has graduated another class of future movie critics. And in the coming months, many of these new graduates will start critiquing major motion pictures – but they’ll have to finish their homework first since these up-and-coming film reviewers are all school-aged!

HITN Logo

In early August, a group of young participants were invited to the studios of HITN-TV – which are located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard – to develop critical thinking skills, learn the art of writing and videotaping their film reviews and practice on-camera interview skills. Once the young participants complete the weeklong camp, they have the opportunity to join the KIDS FIRST! Film Critics team. This group of national youth reporters attend press screenings, interview talent on the red carpet, and review new film releases rated PG-13 and younger. These young film critics – ages 8 to 18 – and their reviews are seen, read or listened to by more than 7 million people every month.

The weeklong camp is designed and administered by Ranny Levy, founder of KIDS FIRST! and developer of the KIDS FIRST! Film Critics program. Many of this years’ campers were awarded a scholarship by HITN-TV to cover the full cost participating in the camp. At the completion of the Boot Camp, participants have developed their critical writing skills, learned advanced communications skills and explored media as a career option. The Film Critics Boot Camp is a first of its kind in New York City and is the result of partnership between HITN-TV and KIDS FIRST!.

After a successful inaugural year, the HITN-TV / KIDS FIRST! Film Critics Boot Camp added a second weeklong camp designed for youth who have already participated as a KIDS FIRST! Film Critic or have extensive media experience. As part of the camp activities, the students meet with special guests from the entertainment industry including actors, film critics and producers. This year Sandy Kenyon, the venerable Entertainment Reporter and movie critic for ABC Eyewitness News in New York City visited the camp. Mr. Kenyon spoke to the group about entertainment reporting and offered tips such as the importance of not becoming friends with famous celebrities since that makes its harder to later critique their role in a film. Mr. Kenyon also graciously invited the group to tour ABC Studios in Manhattan and appear on-air as guest film critics the same day he reviewed the amazing reboot of Disney’s cherished family film, Pete’s Dragon.

KIDS FIRST! Film Critics Boot Camp is a project of the Coalition for Quality Children’s Media, a national, nonprofit (501-c-3) organization founded in 1991 whose mission is to teach children critical viewing skills and to increase the visibility and availability of quality children’s media. DWC Provides Status Report on Drug Formulary, Updates to Medical Treatment Guidelines

0

OAKLAND, California, Aug. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Department of Industrial Relations’ Division of Workers’ Compensation (DIR/DWC) is on target to implement a workers’ compensation drug formulary by July of next year as required by Assembly Bill 1124. DWC is also updating its medical guidelines to align with the formulary and provide the best evidence-based care for injured workers while reducing delays in their treatment and administrative burden.

“The drug formulary will help guide medical providers in the best treatment for specific conditions,” said DIR Director Christine Baker. “And using preferred drugs will also help control costs.”

The drug formulary is expected to reduce the need for utilization review (UR) and independent medical review (IMR), processes which consider necessity of proposed treatment. The foundation for the drug formulary is the evidence-based content of Reed Group’s American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) formulary. DWC has drafted rules and criteria for the application of the formulary and use of the preferred drug list. DWC has posted draft formulary regulation text on the DWC Forums for public review and will accept comments until 5 p.m. on Friday, September 16.

The Division contracted with RAND to conduct a review and analysis of existing drug formularies, and to make recommendations for California.

The formulary is most effective when used in conjunction with evidence-based treatment recommendations for the patient’s condition and phase of care. As a result, DWC is also updating the guidelines in its medical treatment utilization schedule to integrate the guidelines and drug formulary portions of the MTUS. These updated guidelines on numerous clinical topics, have been posted on the DWC forum for review and comment.

“Many treatment guidelines have been updated and we want to reflect the most recent evidence in the MTUS,” said DWC Executive Medical Director Dr. Raymond Meister. “The updates will facilitate the best evidence-based care, while the formulary will provide a clear list of preferred medications.

The following chapters have been posted on the forum:

  • Ankle and Foot
  • Cervical and Thoracic Spine
  • Elbow Disorders
  • Eye
  • Hand, Wrist, and Forearm
  • Hip and Groin
  • Knee Disorders
  • Low Back Disorders
  • Shoulder Disorders

The ACOEM Guidelines are published by Reed Group and are available electronically through MDGuidelines. Grounded in transparent, evidence-based methodology, the ACOEM chapters provide guidance in effective treatment of occupational injuries and illnesses and are intended to help improve or restore the health of those workers who incur occupationally related illnesses or injuries.

The introduction of a preferred drug formulary using evidence-based medical guidelines is expected to reduce usage of opioids. According to analysis conducted in May by the California Workers’ Compensation Institute, opioid prescriptions accounted for 27.2% of prescriptions and 24.4% of spending in 2014, the latest data available.

Assembly Bill 1124 (Statutes 2015, Chapter 525) requires DWC adopt the formulary in consultation with the Commission on Health and Safety and Workers’ Compensation, and that DWC’s administrative director meet and consult with stakeholders. DWC held a public meeting in Oakland on February 17. The legislation further requires posting of a minimum of two interim reports describing the status of the formulary’s creation. The drug formulary must be adopted by July 1, 2017, and must be consistent with California’s Medical Treatment Utilization Schedule (MTUS), for medications prescribed in the workers’ compensation system.

The Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) monitors the administration of workers’ compensation claims, and provides administrative and judicial services to assist in resolving disputes that arise in connection with claims for workers’ compensation benefits.

DWC’s Information and Assistance Unit, often the first DWC contact for injured workers, also provides assistance in English and Spanish to employers, labor unions, insurance carriers, physicians, attorneys and other interested parties regarding rights, benefits and obligations under California’s workers’ compensation laws.

Members of the press may contact Erika Monterroza or Peter Melton at (510) 286-1161, and are encouraged to subscribe to get email alerts on DIR’s press releases, DWC newsline updates, or other departmental notifications.

The California Department of Industrial Relations, established in 1927, protects and improves the health, safety, and economic well-being of over 18 million wage earners, and helps their employers comply with state labor laws. DIR is housed within the Labor & Workforce Development Agency. AARP Praises OK for State-Based Private Sector Retirement Plans; Urges NY to Act

0

NEW YORK, Aug. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — AARP today praised the finalization of a rule by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) that confirms states can facilitate the creation of automatic enrollment retirement savings plans for use by small businesses.

AARP New York urged New York State – where over half of all private sector workers lack access to a workplace retirement savings plan – to take advantage of the new rule. Nationwide, these public-private partnerships have the potential to help more than 55 million American workers who lack access to a way to save for retirement automatically out of their regular paycheck. In New York, such a plan could help over three million private sector workers.

The Department of Labor also issued a draft rule that would pave the way for large cities – including New York City – to enact similar plans.

“We applaud the White House and Labor Secretary Perez for their support of state legislative efforts to improve access to workplace retirement savings plans for  millions of Americans who currently have no way to save for retirement at work,” said Nancy LeaMond, Executive Vice President of AARP’s Community, State and National Group.

“AARP New York urges Governor Cuomo and our state lawmakers to take advantage of this opportunity to help over three million private sector workers in New York by providing an effective way for them to save their own money and create a financially secure future,” said Beth Finkel, State Director of AARP in New York State.

“In New York City, Mayor de Blasio, Comptroller Stringer, Public Advocate James and City Council Speaker Mark-Viverito have all thrown their support behind such a plan for the city, and we are excited that the U.S. Department of Labor is developing a similar rule for large cities,” Finkel noted. “AARP supports the city’s efforts and we look forward to working with Governor Cuomo’s NY-SMART Commission to develop a plan for all New Yorkers – a plan that would help them move toward financial self-sufficiency and lessen the need for public assistance at a time when company pensions and 401(k)s are becoming a thing of the past.”

AARP New York supports the bi-partisan “Secure Choice” legislation, which has been introduced in both houses by Senator Diane Savino and Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez and has attracted 90 co-sponsors in the 150-member State Assembly.

AARP is pleased that the new rule addresses the importance of features such as payroll deduction and automatic enrollment. Without these options, plans are far less effective at helping people save their own money for retirement.

“We know that workers who have access to automatic enrollment plans are 15 times more likely to save for their future,” said LeaMond. “As a result of the new rule, states will be able to make available to tens of millions of Americans workplace savings vehicles that will help them save more for their retirement years.”

More than half of the states are considering ways to address economic insecurity in retirement. Four states have already enacted legislation creating Work and Save plans that would be impacted by this rule: Illinois, Oregon, Connecticut, and Maryland. Legislation in California is also anticipated in 2016.
