Rise in Eye Injuries from Toy Guns Prompts Call for Careful Holiday Shopping

0

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 1, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Children’s eye injuries from toy guns have increased by more than 500 percent in recent years, a recent study shows. With the holiday toy-shopping frenzy in full swing, the American Academy of Ophthalmology is urging parents to avoid buying toys that can cause serious eye injuries and even blindness in children.

Overall, 251,800 children under the age of 12 were treated in U.S. emergency rooms for toy-related injuries last year, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.[1] In terms of eye injuries, research from Stanford University shows that those caused by toy guns are on the rise.[2] A 2015 study found eye trauma from airsoft guns and pellet guns increased more than 500 percent in kids between 2010 and 2012. Commonly reported eye injuries included corneal abrasions, which are scratches on the front of the eye, and hyphema, a pooling of blood in the front of the eye. More severe trauma that can end in blindness includes retinal detachment and rupture of the eyeball.

But, not all toys have to shoot bullets to harm a child’s eyes. Foam dart guns, slingshots and even drones can also pose danger to children’s vision. The Academy encourages parents to keep in mind the following when purchasing toys this holiday season:

  • Avoid purchasing toys with sharp, protruding or projectile parts such as airsoft guns, BB guns and paintball guns. They can propel foreign objects into the sensitive tissue of the eye.
  • For laser toys, look for labels that include a compliance statement with 21 CFR Subchapter J. This ensures the product meets the Code of Federal Regulations requirements for laser products, including power limitations.
  • When giving sports equipment, provide children with the appropriate protective eyewear with polycarbonate lenses. They are shatterproof and less likely than other materials to damage the eye if broken on impact.
  • Check labels for age recommendations to be sure to select gifts that are suited for a child’s age and maturity. Also, keep toys that are made for older children away from younger children.
  • Provide appropriate adult supervision to children playing with potentially hazardous toys or games that could cause an eye injury.

“Every year, we see kids shot in the eye with pellets, BBs or foam darts,” said pediatric ophthalmologist Jane Edmond, M.D., spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “These can all cause permanent, serious eye damage to a child. If you do let your children play with these types of toys, make sure they wear protective eyewear.”

If your child experiences an eye injury, seek immediate medical attention from an ophthalmologist, a physician specializing in medical and surgical eye care. For more information on toy safety, see the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s toy safety page at www.geteyesmart.org or watch the toy safety video.

Journalists who wish to speak with ophthalmologists or patients about toy-related eye injuries can contact the Academy’s Public Relations Department at [email protected].

Thought leaders, philanthropists, executives and celebrities gathered at The Pierre in New York City to honor the incredible 2015 Women of Worth Honorees and celebrate their inspiring stories. The event featured special presentations by L’Oreal Paris ambassadors Karlie Kloss, Eva Longoria, Andie MacDowell, Julianne Moore, Aimee Mullins and Freida Pinto. Arianna Huffington, Hoda Kotb, Mary Alice Stephenson, and 2014 Women of Worth National Honoree Phyllis Sudman also helped to honor this year’s winners.

“During our 10th anniversary year, it is thrilling to see such exceptional women join our Women of Worth family. They find the beauty in giving back by selflessly and tirelessly volunteering time and energy to serve their communities. The passion for their work and dedication to their causes is inspiring to us all,” said L’Oreal Paris President, Karen T. Fondu. “The resulting ripple effect of all 100 Women of Worth honored over the past decade is a testament to the transformative power of giving back. L’Oreal Paris is committed to elevating women who serve others. We are so proud of all of the accomplishments of our Women of Worth Honorees.”

Each Women of Worth Honoree, who received $10,000 for their organization, was chosen following a rigorous nomination process led by L’Oreal Paris and the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, Points of Light. The 2015 Women of Worth National Honoree, Schinnell Leake, was awarded an additional $25,000 after receiving thousands of public votes via the L’Oreal Paris website and social channels in support of her efforts celebrating the birthdays and self-worth of children living in local homeless shelters. The College Park, Md. resident created Extra-Ordinary Birthdays after learning that more than 2,000 children live in homeless shelters throughout the Washington, D.C. area. As a mother and a party planner, she knew how important it was for children to feel confident and have self-worth. Since founding her organization five years ago, Extra-Ordinary Birthdays has thrown more than 400 birthday parties and partnered with six homeless shelters in Maryland and Washington, D.C.

“Words cannot adequately express how proud I am to be recognized as one of L’Oreal Paris’ 2015 Women of Worth and to be voted on by so many to be the National Honoree,” said Schinnell Leake, founder of Extra-Ordinary Birthdays. “This incredibly generous donation from L’Oreal Paris means so much to our organization and will help us expand our reach to create even more birthday celebrations for deserving kids who are homeless in the Washington, D.C. and Maryland regions.”

Three-term New York Mayor, philanthropist and entrepreneur, Michael R. Bloomberg joined the festivities to present the inaugural L’Oreal Paris Women of Worth Impact Award which recognizes a Women of Worth alumna who has demonstrated a continued commitment to her work. Bloomberg presented the award to Atlanta, Georgia native Lisa Williams, which included a $10,000 grant from L’Oreal Paris for her cause. A Women of Worth Honoree five years ago, Williams was noted for embodying the L’Oreal Paris philosophy that “Every Woman is Worth It,” providing a safe haven for women and children who have been victimized by violence. Through her Circle of Friends and The Living Water Programs, she has worked to pass state legislation protecting these victims and expanded the organization’s resources and impact from Georgia to multiple states across the country.

“It is an absolute honor to once again be recognized by L’Oreal Paris with the inaugural Women of Worth Impact Award,” said Lisa Williams, founder of Circle of Friends and The Living Water Programs. “The Women of Worth program has played such an important part in expanding our work to champion women who need a safe haven, and this award and donation will only help to increase that impact to help more through their healing process.”

Cutting edge therapy for Psoriasis patients now available in the Caribbean

0

PANAMA CITY, Dec. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that affects around 140 million people worldwide.  It’s more frequent between the ages of 15 and 25, but may develop at any age and highly impacts the quality of life.

Several types of psoriasis exist, which range from mild to severe and disabling. Plaque psoriasis is the most common form and is known for producing inflammation and scaly patches of thickened skin called “plaques”. It is caused due to a problem in the immunologic system, where white blood cells that normally become activated to fight infections, are in this case activated against the healthy skin cells.  The cause of the disease is unknown. The immunologic system is activated and produces inflammatory mediators which are responsible for the skin lesions.

During this process, white blood cells release chemical products called “cytokines”, which produce inflammation, reddening of the skin and make the cutaneous cells move from deeper skin layer to surface at a higher speed than normal, (almost 5 times). These cells accumulate and generate the scaly patches. Psoriatic lesions show the aspect of scales, sometimes with a white silver color, while the skin below is red and if scratched it can bleed. Two specific cytokines are increased in the pathogenesis of psoriasis and produce the inflammatory process of the disease (Interleukin 12 and Interleukin 23).

Ustekinumab is a monoclonal antibody that represents the first of a new class of psoriasis therapies that specifically and selectively targets IL-12/IL-23.

Ustekinumab is now available in the Caribbean, specifically in Aruba, Bahamas, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Curacao and Jamaica.[i]  Ustekinumab is commercialized under the brand Stelara™.

This therapeutic alternative is the latest generation of psoriasis treatment. With over 3,000 treated patients (in clinical trials) up to 5 years of treatment. The data obtained proves that the treatment is well tolerated and safe.

Clinical trials demonstrated that at least two thirds of the patients obtained a 75% improvement of the psoriasis, in accordance with the Psoriasis Activity Severity Index (PASI 75), after only two doses of Ustekinumab. This innovative treatment has a very convenient dosage regimen when compared with other biological therapies for psoriasis. After 5 years, approximately 80% of the patients treated with Ustekinumab maintain response.

Until recent years, psoriasis was considered a disease limited to the skin. Recent evidence, from important population studies in psoriatic patients, has demonstrated an increase in mortality and a decrease in life expectancy between 3 to 4 years in patients with psoriasis.

On the other hand, the impact of psoriasis notably influences the quality of life, and this is reflected in the increase of different social and psychoactive pathologies, and in the acquisition of unhealthy habits like tobacco and alcohol, favored by low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and the isolation which patients feel subjected to.[ii]

“Ustekinumab significantly improves the quality of life of patients with moderate to severe psoriasis, as well as their physical and mental functions. After 12 weeks of treatment, patients treated with Ustekinumab present a significant improvement in their mental well-being and their physical condition”, affirmed Dr. Eduardo Franco; Janssen’s Medical Director for Central America and the Caribbean.

The itching and pain, the plaques in their hands and feet may hinder the performance of certain tasks or participation in some activities. Overtime, about 40% of psoriatic patients develop arthritis. “The most severe cases of psoriasis may even generate immobility of the patient. Some patients compare the reduction of their physical activities to the ones generated by other diseases as cancer or heart diseases”, pointed out Dr. Jose Antonio Herrera, Immunology Medical Manager for Janssen.

While the interviewer Mr. Norman acknowledged that doing business in Africa can be murky, Dr. Kizito touted Ghana as a very investor-friendly country in Sub-Sahara Africa that is truly open for real investments from capable and willing investors. “The Chinese are all over Ghana jumping in on business opportunities, especially in the emerging Crude Oil business,” according to Professor Kizito, a college professor and successful entrepreneur on his relationships with some investors from China. 0

NEW YORK, Dec. 1, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — El Salvador Export and Investment Attraction Agency (PROESA) conducted its first Investment Forum, El Salvador: Opportunities Beyond Expectations, with invited guests from a cross-section of the business and investment communities in Manhattan and the surrounding metropolitan area. A panel of Salvadorian officials and a US businessman discussed the opportunities and advantages of doing business and investing in El Salvador.

Speaking at the forum Mr. Sigfrido Reyes, President of PROESA said: “More than 50 companies from all around the world have already established a home for their operations in El Salvador. We have every expectation that it will continue to grow.”

Referencing the benefits of commerce in El Salvador, Reyes continued: “The people of El Salvador are friendly and gracious in their hospitality.” El Salvador, located in the middle of the Americas, has adopted the US dollar – considered a major factor for investors.  Citing the issue of safety, security, and overall stability of El Salvador, Reyes said: “We have fought and won corruption, have worked vigorously to promote economic growth, and today we offer a country that is ready, in all aspects, to be your partner.”

Speaking specifically to the issue of economics, Carolina Vides, Investment and Export Manager for PROESA, said: “It all starts with investment laws.  El Salvador offers attractive tax incentives which guaranty investors a secure environment.” The country has begun to attract foreign direct investors (FDI), a statistic supported by the fact that it has more foreign direct investors than any other country in the region.

Phil Pedone, panelist and US businessman with operations in El Salvador, believes El Salvador is an outstanding place to conduct business, stating: “They have free trade agreements with 42 countries, and taxes are very favorable for foreign investors.” According to Pedone, profits from their Salvadorian business have allowed them to make investments that have helped grow their business both in US and El Salvador.

Salvadoran UN Ambassador, H.E. Ruben Zamora, in closing, stated: “We have been speaking today of all the advantages of investing in El Salvador. A major factor of foreign investors joining us in El Salvador is that it creates opportunities for everyone; we have created an environment for businesses to invest and grow with El Salvador.”
