Many new mothers report no physician advice on infant sleep position, breastfeeding

0
Infants should be placed to sleep alone, on their backs, on a firm sleep surface, such as in a mattress in a safety-approved crib, covered by a fitted sheet. Soft objects, toys, crib bumpers, quilts, comforters and loose bedding should be kept out of the baby’s sleep area.

Many new mothers report no physician advice on infant sleep position, breastfeeding

NIH-funded survey finds consistent advice lacking on infant care recommendations

BETHESDA, Md., July 27, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Many new mothers do not receive advice from physicians on aspects of infant care such as sleep position, breastfeeding, immunization and pacifier use, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Health care practitioner groups have issued recommendations and guidelines on all these aspects of infant care, based on research which has found that certain practices can prevent disease and even save lives.

The study authors surveyed a nationally representative sample of more than 1,000 new mothers, inquiring about infant care advice they received from doctors, nurses, family members and the news media.

Roughly 20 percent of mothers said they did not receive advice from their doctors regarding current recommendations on breastfeeding or on placing infants to sleep on their backs—a practice long proven to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). More than 50 percent of mothers reported they received no advice on where their infants should sleep. Room-sharing with parents—but not bed-sharing—is the recommended practice for safe infant sleep.

The study appeared in Pediatrics and was conducted by researchers at Boston Medical Center, Boston University, and Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.

“Earlier studies have shown that new mothers listen to their physicians,” said Marian Willinger, Ph.D.., of the Pregnancy and Perinatology Branch at NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), which funded the study. “This survey shows that physicians have an opportunity to provide new mothers with much-needed advice on how to improve infant health and even save infant lives.”

African American women, Hispanic women and first time mothers were more likely to receive advice from their physicians than were white women and mothers of two or more children.

“As a physician, these findings made me stop and really think about how we communicate important information to new parents,” said the study’s first author, Staci R. Eisenberg, M.D., a pediatrician at Boston Medical Center. “We may need to be clearer and more specific in telling new mothers about safe sleep recommendations. From a public health perspective, there is a real opportunity to engage families and the media to promote infant health.”

For the Study of Attitudes and Factors Effecting Infant Care Practices, the researchers enrolled new mothers at delivery from 32 hospitals around the country, with 1031 women eventually taking part in the study. The authors asked the women to complete questionnaires when the infant was between 2 and 6 months of age on advice they received from their infant’s doctor, birth hospital nurses, their family members, and the news media. In addition to finding out whether or not these sources had provided advice on infant care, the questionnaires sought to determine whether the advice was consistent with the recommendations of practitioner groups.

For example, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that caregivers always place a baby on his or her back for sleep at night and for naps. The women in the study were asked whether they agreed or disagreed with a series of statements on sleep placement: “The nurses at the hospital where my baby was born think that I should place my baby to sleep on the [back, side or stomach.]” If the women agreed with the statement that the baby should be placed to sleep on his or her back, the researchers classified the response as consistent with the AAP recommendation. Agreement with statements on the other placement positions was considered inconsistent with the recommendation.

When it was given, advice from physicians tended to be consistent with recommendations.  However, 10 to 15 percent of the advice given on breastfeeding and pacifier use was not consistent with recommendations, and slightly more than 25 percent was not consistent with recommendations for sleep position or location. Interestingly, of the women who reported physician advice on sleep position that was inconsistent with recommendations, 85 percent reported being advised to place the infant on his or her back and at least one other position—usually the side (which confers increased risk for SIDS relative to back position). In comparison, of the more than 32 percent of mothers reporting family advice regarding infant sleep position that was inconsistent with recommendations, 51 percent had been told to place infants to sleep on their stomach (stomach sleeping has been associated with the greatest increased risk for SIDS).

Physicians and others in a position to offer advice to mothers may fail to do so because they do not know about recommendations or because they disagree with a recommendation, the study authors wrote. Physicians also may be reluctant to give a recommendation they believe is controversial or one that might lead to a lengthy conversation, especially if they are facing time constraints during busy office hours.

Hispanic Evangelicals Oppose The Iranian Nuclear Deal

SAN FRANCISCO, July 24, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The following is a statement from National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference NHCLC/CONEL:

Last week, American negotiators and their negotiating partners signed off on an agreement that is supposed to tame Iran’s once-secret and long-denied nuclear weapons program.  The original goal was to prevent Iran from having any pathway to nuclear weapons.  Unfortunately, this agreement falls far short of the original goals.

Logo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120912/CL72800LOGO

On Monday, July 20, the US State Department officially delivered the Iran agreement to the US Congress for its 60-day review period.  During this period Congress must review the agreement and decide whether to approve or disapprove it.  Even though top congressional leaders from both parties asked the president not to do so until after the congressional review period, the Administration went forward with a resolution of approval on Monday at the United Nations Security Council.  While the Security Council voted unanimously to endorse the agreement, Congress still has a vital role to play.  It is important to remember that Security Council resolutions do not trump U.S. law, and Congress should take its responsibility seriously.

This deal is not only bad; it is very dangerous.  It falls woefully short of what both Democrats and Republicans in Congress have said is acceptable.

The deal does not include “anytime, anywhere” inspections of suspected nuclear sites, giving Iran ample opportunity to hide clandestine nuclear weapons research and development activities.

Iran continues to deny the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) details of Iran’s past military development to use as a baseline for assessment.

The deal lifts sanctions immediately when the agreement goes forward, rather than gradually based on performance, providing Iran with a windfall in excess of $150 billion that will be used to further Iran’s funding of extremism and terrorism in the Middle East and beyond.

The deal does not disconnect and remove all uranium producing centrifuges or disable any Iranian nuclear facility, leaving Iran’s nuclear infrastructure intact and setting the stage for Iran to emerge after 10 – 15 years as a nuclear state able to produce as much enriched uranium as it desires.

The deal lifts the conventional weapons ban imposed on Iran after five years, insanely allowing Iran to reenter the arms trade.

We lead an evangelical Hispanic community which represents more than 40,000 Hispanic churches across America. We are asking Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to oppose this deal.  The alternative is not war; the alternative is the opportunity to regroup and demand a better agreement, one that ensures Iran will not ever become a nuclear power.

The implementation of this deal will lead to devastation results in the near term and in the future.  In the short run, the agreement ensures the end of sanctions and empowers Iran to continue to fund terrorists who target Christians and Jews, and even Muslims with whom they disagree.  Iran is responsible for propping up the Assad regime in Syria, responsible for the deaths of more than 250,000 people and a refugee crisis that is destabilizing the whole region.  This includes murdering and terrorizing our Christian brothers and sisters. Their persecution will only increase as Iran pours more money and weapons into Syria.  Not to mention the Iranian imprisonment of American hostages including Pastor Saeed Abendini.  The agreement also increases the likelihood of greater, not less, nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.

In the long run, this agreement leaves Iran with an industrial-scale nuclear enrichment program.  At that point Iran will be a threshold nuclear state with the ability to produce enough enriched uranium for nuclear weapons in a matter days.  With such a short timeframe, a future American president at that point will have only two choices:  give up and allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon, or military action.  There will be no time for sanctions or diplomacy.

The 60-day clock is ticking for Congress to closely review the agreement.  We remind Congress what this Administration repeated throughout the negotiations:  no deal is better than a bad deal.  This deal is a bad deal and should be rejected.

America is our country; Israel is the spiritual homeland for Christians and Jews around the world.  As Americans and Christians, we care deeply about both, and these two great nations represent the greatest hope for the future of the world.  This Iran deal which accelerates Iran’s ability to build nuclear weapons and foment extremism and terrorism is a threat to world citizens who long for freedom and safety. We could not trust Iran in the past and we cannot trust Iran in the future.  A more powerful Iran will propagate more deception and death.

We represent millions of evangelical Hispanic Christians across the United States who, like us, have a moral duty to fight anti-Semitism, defend America and support Israel.  Each of us has an obligation to oppose this bad deal.  Democrats and Republicans have a history of united legislative cooperation to build a strong US-Israel relationship. This is not a partisan issue; it is a moral imperative.

We ask our Hispanic evangelical community across America to call their members of Congress on both sides of the aisle during this review period to urge them to oppose this bad deal. Let them know that we want a diplomatic solution that actually solves the problem – not a pathway to nuclear weapons for Iran now or in the future.

Rev. Samuel Rodriguez is the President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference NHCLC/CONEL is the world’s largest Hispanic Christian organization. It serves as a representative voice for the more than 100 million Hispanic Evangelicals assembled in over 40,000 U.S. churches and another 500,000 congregations spread throughout the Spanish-speaking diaspora. Rev. Mario Bramnick is the President of Hispanic Israel Leadership Coalition. AT&T Completes Acquisition of DIRECTV

Becomes World’s Largest Pay TV Provider and Video Distribution Leader across TV, Mobile & Broadband

DALLAS, July 24, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has completed its acquisition of DIRECTV. The newly combined company – the largest pay TV provider in the United States and the world – will offer millions of people more choices for video entertainment on any screen from almost anywhere, any time.

“Combining DIRECTV with AT&T is all about giving customers more choices for great video entertainment integrated with mobile and high-speed Internet service,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and CEO. “We’ll now be able to meet consumers’ future entertainment preferences, whether they want traditional TV service with premier programming, their favorite content on a mobile device, or video streamed over the Internet to any screen.”

“This transaction allows us to significantly expand our high-speed Internet service to reach millions more households, which is a perfect complement to our coast-to-coast TV and mobile coverage,” Stephenson said. “We’re now a fundamentally different company with a diversified set of capabilities and businesses that set us apart from the competition.”

AT&T now is the largest pay TV provider in the U.S. and the world, providing service to more than 26 million customers in the United States and more than 191 million customers in Latin America, including Mexico and the Caribbean. Additionally, AT&T has more than 132 million wireless subscribers and connections in the U.S. and Mexico; offers 4G LTE mobile coverage to nearly 310 million people in the U.S.; covers 57 million U.S. customer locations with high-speed Internet; and has nearly 16 million subscribers to its high-speed Internet service.

Current customers of AT&T and DIRECTV do not need to do anything as a result of the merger. They’ll continue to receive their same services, channel lineups, and customer care. Customer account information, online access and billing arrangements remain the same. The integration of AT&T and DIRECTV will occur over the coming months. In the coming weeks, AT&T will launch new integrated TV, mobile and high-speed Internet offers that give customers greater value and convenience.

With the completion of its DIRECTV acquisition, AT&T will continue to deploy its all-fiber GigaPower Internet access service – the company’s highest-speed Internet service, which allows you to download a TV show in as little as three seconds. When the expansion is complete, AT&T’s all-fiber broadband footprint will reach more than 14 million customer locations.

AT&T announced that John Stankey will be CEO of AT&T Entertainment & Internet Services, responsible for leading its combined DIRECTV and AT&T Home Solutions operations. Stankey will report to Stephenson. DIRECTV President, Chairman and CEO Mike White announced his plans to retire.

“Mike is one of the world’s top CEOs and a great leader who built DIRECTV into a premier TV and video entertainment company spanning the U.S. and Latin America,” Stephenson said. “He has been a terrific partner and friend, and his legacy will be an important part of our combined company.”

As a result of this transaction, AT&T leads the industry in offering consumers premier content, particularly live sports programming, such as the exclusive rights to NFL SUNDAY TICKET, which gives customers every out-of-market NFL game, every Sunday afternoon, on any screen – TV, mobile devices or PCs. Additionally, the company owns ROOT SPORTS, one of the nation’s premier regional sports networks, and has stakes in The Tennis Channel, MLB Network, NHL Network, and GSN (Game Show Network).

AT&T is also developing unique video offerings for consumers through, among other initiatives, its Otter Media joint venture with The Chernin Group. The joint venture was established to invest in, acquire and launch over-the-top (OTT) video services. This includes its purchase of a majority stake in Fullscreen, a global online media company that works with more than 50,000 content creators who engage 450 million subscribers and generate 4 billion monthly views.

Under the terms of the merger, DIRECTV shareholders received 1.892 shares of AT&T common stock, in addition to $28.50 in cash, per share of DIRECTV. AT&T will provide complete updated 2015 financial guidance at a conference the company will host for financial analysts in the coming weeks. The conference will be webcast to the public.

The DIRECTV acquisition significantly diversifies AT&T’s revenue mix, products, geographies and customer bases. As a result of this acquisition, as well as AT&T’s acquisition of Iusacell and Nextel Mexico, AT&T expects that, by the end of 2015, its largest revenue streams will be, in descending order: Business Solutions (both wireless and wireline); Entertainment & Internet; Consumer Mobility; and International Mobility and Video.

As part of the Federal Communications Commission’s approval of the transaction, AT&T has agreed to the following conditions for the next four years:

  • Within 4 years, AT&T will offer its all-fiber Internet access service to at least 12.5 million customer locations, such as residences, home offices and very small businesses.  Combined with AT&T’s existing high-speed broadband network, at least 25.7 million customer locations will have access to broadband speeds of 45Mbps or higher.
  • Within its wireline footprint, the company will offer 1Gbps service to any eligible school or library requesting E-rate services, pursuant to applicable rules, within the company’s all-fiber footprint.
  • Within AT&T’s 21-state wireline footprint, it will offer discounted fixed broadband service to low-income households that qualify for the government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. In locations where it’s available, service with speeds of at least 10Mbps will be offered for $10 per month. Elsewhere, 5Mbps service will be offered for $10 per month or, in some locations, 3Mbps service will be offered for $5 per month.
  • AT&T’s retail terms and conditions for its fixed broadband Internet services will not favor its own online video programming services.  AT&T can and will, however, continue to offer discounted integrated bundles of its video and high-speed Internet services.
  • AT&T must submit to the FCC new interconnection agreements it enters into with peering networks and on-net customers for the exchange of Internet traffic. The company will develop, in conjunction with an independent expert, a methodology for measuring the performance of its Internet traffic exchange and regularly report these metrics to the FCC.
  • AT&T will appoint a Company Compliance Officer to develop and implement a plan to ensure compliance with these merger conditions. Also, the company will engage an independent, third-party compliance officer to evaluate the plan and its implementation, and submit periodic reports to the FCC.

AT&T products and services are provided or offered by subsidiaries and affiliates of AT&T Inc. under the AT&T brand and not by AT&T Inc.

1 Includes DIRECTV Latin America pay TV subscribers as of March 31, 2015, including subscribers of Sky Mexico, in which DIRECTV holds a minority stake.

Lawyers Seek Supreme Court Review of Border Patrol Shooting Case

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, July 24, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today, three powerhouse law firms, Hilliard Munoz Gonzales, LLP, Hilliard & Shadowen, LLP and Gupta Wessler PLLC asked the United States Supreme Court to review the Fifth Circuit’s decision holding that a U.S. Border Patrol agent who shot and killed a Mexican teenager standing in Mexico from across the U.S. border had qualified immunity and could not be sued by the teen’s family.

Standing in Texas, U.S. Border Patrol Agent Jesus Mesa, Jr. shot Sergio Adrian Hernandez Guereca, the unarmed teenager, twice in June 2010 after detaining one of Hernandez’s friends near the border fence. The Fifth Circuit, though initially ruling in favor of Fourth Amendment protections for Jesus, vacated a prior panel decision at the request of the government and determined that in fact Hernandez’s family couldn’t sue under the Fourth Amendment because Hernandez was a Mexican citizen, on Mexican soil and had no “significant voluntary connection” to the U.S. The court disagreed on whether Mesa’s actions violated Hernandez’s Fifth Amendment due process rights but agreed that any right Hernandez had as a foreign national would not have been clear to Mesa at the time of the shooting. Mesa did not know the nationality of Hernandez when he fired his weapon.

“Different federal courts have now ruled different ways,” says Robert C. Hilliard, attorney for Hernandez. “Border Patrol Agents around the country face different standards. Right now, at this moment, Border Patrol agents in Texas know they have the blessing of the Fifth Circuit and can shoot and kill an innocent boy standing in Mexico and be immune from civil liability. But Border Patrol agents in California and Arizona know they have to hold their fire—as murder of this type has been disapproved of by the federal appellate courts with jurisdiction over those states, and civil liability allowed. Agents in New Mexico are not sure if they are free to shoot to kill or not. It’s all very confusing for these armed governmental agents who patrol the borders of our country.

It seems ridiculous that the life or death of an innocent Mexican citizen standing in Mexico should turn on what State in the U.S. he is staring at and standing across from.

The time is ripe for the Supreme Court to weigh in on this issue, which has immeasurable significance. Roughly one million U.S. citizens live in Mexico, including more than 500,000 children, many of whom were born in American border cities like El Paso but have Mexican family and reside across the border in Mexico. Sergio easily could have been one of these American children, playing with his friends on a warm summer day, and Mesa would not have known. If he had been, Mesa would not be immune from suit.”

TAVAD – 87 per cent of patients successfully complete cocaine addiction treatment

MADRID, July 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — In keeping with its transparency policy, as it does every year, the Spanish drug treatment center TAVAD reports the results for patients whose treatment for cocaine addiction ended in 2014. Out of all those who began treatment, 100% completed the drug treatment process without quitting, and one year after being discharged, 87% of them achieved a successful outcome.

TAVAD, Advanced Addiction Treatments, reports the annual results achieved in patients treated for cocaine addiction who completed their treatment in 2014.

TAVAD has had a transparency policy for over 20 years, during which time it has analysed and published patients’ treatment results every year. Since it published its first results in 1998, in partnership with the Health Technology Assessment Agency of the Carlos III Health Institute, the data obtained has been made available to researchers, scientists and doctors on the centre’s website.

The treatment provided to cocaine addicts involves an initial 48-hour hospital stay during which the neurones damaged by cocaine consumption are neuroregulated as part of an intensive pharmacological and physiotherapeutic procedure.

After the hospital stay, each patient receives the medical, psychological and pharmacological follow-up and support he or she needs for one year.

According to Dr. Legarda, who has directed TAVAD since 1988, “The results are excellent. Retention rates and the clinical depression and anxiety data are improving significantly, which also points to an improvement in quality of life.”

“The clinical experience shows us that patients exhibit a clear recovery in their state of mind, sleep and capacity to understand, think and act. Applying a range of tests, including SCL-90, we see major positive changes in aspects such as depression, anxiety and hostility, and in all other symptoms”, explains the director.

The drug treatment center’s website includes news, videos and information on cocaine addiction treatment.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 24, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Honda introduced a refreshed 2016 Accord loaded with advanced technology in Silicon Valley today, the first time the company has launched a new vehicle in the U.S. tech hub. Coming to market in August, the 2016 Accord will be the first Honda model and among the first high-volume cars in the marketplace to feature both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. These and other major upgrades to technology and features make it the most high-tech Accord ever.

The 2016 Accord Sedan and Coupe receive dynamic new styling, a new Display Audio touchscreen interface, and Honda Sensing™, the most comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies in the midsize car class. The 2016 Accord also adds HD Radio®, heated rear seats, front and rear parking sensors, and a number of other new features and technology to be revealed in coming weeks. Details on the Accord Hybrid will be announced at a later date.

“Where else to introduce the most technologically advanced midsize sedan, the 2016 Accord, than in Silicon Valley,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of the Automobile Division, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “Customers want their vehicles to be more intelligently integrated with their smartphone-powered lives, and we are committed to delivering that experience starting with Accord, retail car buyers’ most popular vehicle the past two years.”

Exterior and Interior design
The 2016 Accord gets a major facelift with sportier, more sophisticated styling, front and rear. In front is a more sharply creased and intricately structured bumper fascia with outside edges that tuck into intake-like meshed areas that house new LED fog lights (Sport trim and above). A new aluminum hood features sharper character lines that meet up with a brighter, more expressive front grille. In the rear, the Accord gets restyled LED taillights and a similarly aggressive rear bumper fascia redesign.

While all models feature restyled wheels, the Accord Sedan (Sport and Touring trim) and Coupe (Touring, new for Coupe) get new, larger 19-inch wheels and tires. The Touring sedan also gets a new rear deck spoiler. All models, Coupe and Sedan, feature the expanded use of LED lighting – LED taillights for all models, LED headlights for the new Touring Coupe, and LED daytime running lights (DRLs) for Sport and above trims.

Honda Sensing™
All 2016 Accords also can now be equipped with Honda Sensing™, among the most comprehensive suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies in the class. Honda Sensing includes a Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and is available as a standalone option on all trims with the exception of Touring, where Honda Sensing is included as standard equipment.

Also, all 2016 Accords feature a standard Multi-Angle Rearview Camera and Expanded View Driver’s Mirror and, for the first time, new auto high-beam headlights (Touring trim) that enhance nighttime visibility and driving convenience by defaulting to the high-beam setting and automatically switching to low beams when an oncoming vehicle is detected.

Display Audio with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™
The Accord audio and digital experience also is significantly upgraded with the application of a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen interface featuring Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto, on EX and above trims, as well as available HondaLink™ Assist (e911) and HD Radio. The intuitive and easy-to-use capacitive touchscreen lets users swipe, tap and pinch—just like on a tablet or smartphone—to control the vehicle’s audio system, display settings and other advanced features.

Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto are designed to support seamless smart phone integration and offer a multitude of new functions and features.

Apple CarPlay® takes the things you want to do with your iPhone while driving and puts them right on your car’s built-in display. You can get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music right from the touchscreen or by voice via Siri. Supported apps include Phone, Messages, Maps, Music and compatible third party apps. Apple CarPlay® is compatible with iOS 7.1 or later and iPhone 5 or later.

Android Auto was designed to give drivers a simple, intuitive way through touch and voice to minimize the potential for distraction so the driver can stay focused on the road. Compatible with Android 5.0 and higher, Android Auto features Google Maps, Google Now, messaging, music and numerous popular apps.

To take full advantage of these new systems and features, the 2016 Accord’s new 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen is paired with an upper 7.7-inch high-resolution display screen and steering wheel-mounted controls.
