Funds will help empower Latinos to join workforce of the future
WASHINGTON, Sept. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The General Motors Foundation today announced grants totaling $1 million to fund Hispanic education and science, technology, engineering and math initiatives to help empower young Latinos to join the workforce of the future.
Grace Lieblein, General Motors vice president of Global Quality, announced the grants during a press conference at the National Press Club, where she was joined by GM Foundation Vice President Lori Wingerter, Chief Diversity Officer Ken Barrett, U.S. Rep. Tony Cárdenas, D-Calif., and representatives from Hispanic organizations.
“Hispanics represent an important facet of our business as the next generation of leaders and innovators, and also our customers,” Lieblein said. “At GM, we want to help fund vital programs aimed at increasing opportunities for Latinos to pursue STEM careers and strengthen their skills to compete for jobs.”
The grants benefit the nation’s leading Hispanic organizations, including the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR), the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI), the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) and Service Employment Redevelopment (SER) National.
Cárdenas, who represents California’s San Fernando Valley, said the grants will help increase the small number of Latino STEM graduates from U.S. colleges, helping to put more Americans into the family-wage jobs of the future.
“As the President has said, America can only succeed when we are playing with a full team. That means ensuring that everyone in our country has a great chance to not only learn, but also to succeed,” he said.
For decades, GM and its philanthropic foundation have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to organizations across the country and around the world. These grants focus on advancing access to education through programs such as the Buick Achievers Scholarship, one of the largest programs of its kind in the country.
“We recognize the increasing importance of investing in the education and empowerment of Hispanic youth,” said Wingerter of the GM Foundation. “Through these grants, we hope to make a lasting difference in their lives and in their communities.”
Nineteen leading Hispanic groups will receive grants to fund programs focused on STEM education, including:
- League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) – Will expand its Empower Hispanic America
nwith Technology (EHAT) initiative, which provides access to state-of-the-art technologies in 60 Hispanic communities across the United States. The centers will provide STEM related student support services to five EHAT sites to help improve high school STEM achievement among Hispanic youth. - National Council of La Raza (NCLR) – As part of its Special Initiative, NCLR will develop a new component within its successful Lideres program, facilitating professional development opportunities for 18-to-24 year-old Latinos and helping students gain leadership skills required for midlevel positions in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors.
- Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) – CHCI will invest in planning and capacity to build scalable and sustainable models to prepare for dynamic population growth and need associated with the prediction that Latinos will comprise one-quarter of the U.S. population by 2030.
- United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) – USHLI will develop a school-based project for economically disadvantaged students attending underserved schools and engaging the community in four predominantly Latino communities Prominent Latino experts in STEM-related fields from similarly disadvantaged backgrounds will help promote a greater understanding of STEM-related studies, practical uses and employment/career opportunities.
- Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR) – HACR will focus on the HACR STEM Initiative, a forum of business sessions focusing on education, recruitment, retention, and Latinas in STEM, among others. The HACR STEM Initiative was created to understand the mechanisms that lead to lower participation in STEM fields for Hispanics and to identify barriers to successful career progression for those Hispanics in the STEM pipeline.
- SER National – SER National will focus on an early education model designed to respond to the unique needs of young linguistically and culturally diverse youth and their families. The primary goal is to advance early development and dual language learning of young children, preparing them for achievement in school, higher learning, economic well-being and participation in civil society.

Ground-Breaking Partnership with German Medical Engineering, Inc. (GME) to develop and distribute best-in-class aesthetic energy devices featuring advanced optical scanning technology
BRIDGEWATER, N.J., Sept. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Solta Medical, a division of Valeant Pharmaceuticals North America LLC today announced the availability of the Clear + Brilliant pelo™ laser in the United States, a sophisticated approach to permanent hair reduction. The launch of this device, which joins the comprehensive portfolio of Solta Medical’s aesthetic device solutions, follows a unique partnership with German Medical Engineering, (GME), a sophisticated leader in the development of high-performance aesthetic energy devices.

“We are extremely excited to expand our portfolio of solutions and to be at the forefront of modern day technology and aesthetic offerings,” said Solta Medical General Manager Vladimir Paul-Blanc. “We believe in the science of linear scanning as developed by GME, and are confident it offers a significant advantage to current laser hair removal technology. We also believe this partnership with GME affirms Valeant’s commitment to bringing disruptive products into the marketplace swiftly.”
“GME takes pride in designing innovative technological advancements for aesthetic and dermatologic solutions that can benefit patients around the world. We share a high standard of care with Solta Medical as it relates to building ground-breaking products that will deliver consistently impressive results, while partnering with our physicians and consumers around the world. GME is excited to begin and grow this partnership with Solta as we believe, together, we can continue to provide advanced products in the aesthetic space,” said Stefan Schulze, CEO of GME.
The Clear + Brilliant pelo laser system uses a novel linear scanning approach with integrated contact cooling to deliver the effectiveness of current best-in-class diode laser hair removal technology with the fastest and largest treatment area available (50mm by 15mm). In addition, a unique all-inclusive subscription model will provide ease-of-mind and simplicity in ensuring consistent device performance and dependable support.
According to Miami-based dermatologist, Dr. Leyda Bowes, “The Clear + Brilliant pelo laser hair removal system offers my practice high-patient satisfaction with the fastest treatments and solid results. Its scanning delivery mode allows comfortable laser hair removal, while reducing significantly the time spent at the office. The Clear + Brilliant pelo system also allows us to treat most skin types, which is a major consideration in an ethnically diverse city like Miami.”
In 2014, laser hair removal was the # 1 minimally invasive cosmetic procedure among millenials aged 20-29 years old, ahead of Botox and microdermabrasion, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. “The Clear + Brilliant pelo offers clinicians the opportunity to attract and retain this rapidly growing demographic. Also, clinicians can expand their aesthetic offerings in a very compelling and economical manner through the adoption of multiple Solta Medical platforms,” said Sheetal Davitt, Solta Director of Marketing. “We look forward to the opportunity to further strengthen and expand our offerings.”
“The Clear + Brilliant pelo is redesigning the way we are treating unwanted hair in the aesthetic industry by introducing a novel linear scanning technology that delivers laser energy very fast with uniform heating. This new delivery system creates an efficacious and more comfortable way to permanently reduce unwanted hair with a demonstrated safety profile. It’s wonderful to see laser technologies going to the next level,” said Ft. Lauderdale-based dermatologist Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera.
Leading San Diego based-dermatologist, Dr. Sabrina Fabi recently said, “I am excited for the launch of the Clear + Brilliant pelo! The 808nm wavelength allows me to treat a range of Fitzpatrick skin types, and the cooling crystal protects the epidermis while doing so. Unlike other diodes in the space, its cooling crystal helps mitigate pain, and I appreciate being able to alter the temperature of the cooling crystal.”
“One patient called it ‘Extraordinary.’ She says there was very little discomfort during the treatment and that she was surprised and impressed by how well it worked after only one treatment, commented Atlanta-based Dermatologist Dr. Jordana Gilman. “I think it is faster and less painful than other laser hair removal devices, and I would choose the Clear + Brilliant pelo over the LightSheer, by Lumenis Ltd., when treating patients.”
Clear + Brilliant pelo will first be made exclusively available to current Solta Medical customers in the U.S, with full release scheduled in the fourth quarter of 2015.

ATLANTA, Sept. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today, The Home Depot® activates its army of associate volunteers to launch the company’s fifth-annual Celebration of Service, a two-month-long campaign focused on improving the homes and lives of U.S. military veterans and their families. Team Depot, the company’s associate-led volunteer force, will focus on projects related to two themes: senior veterans, who need modifications to their homes to safely age in place, and veterans with service-connected disabilities. To kick off Celebration of Service, 1,000 Team Depot volunteers will be deployed in more than 30 cities including Anchorage, Atlanta, Dallas, Grand Rapids, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Staten Island, today through Sunday, Sept. 13, to help improve the safety and accessibility of the homes of more than 100 veterans.
Logo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130905/CL75064LOGO
More than 8.4 million veterans will be 65 or older by 2020 and more than four million veterans are living with service-related disabilities. That’s why since 2011, The Home Depot Foundation has invested more than $105 million in veteran-related efforts and, together with Team Depot, has transformed more than 22,000 veteran homes.
“Safety and accessibility challenges can make it difficult for seniors and people living with disabilities to move around their homes,” said Craig Menear, chairman, CEO and president of The Home Depot. “During Celebration of Service, our associates will roll up their sleeves to restore veterans’ independence – something they very much deserve after the service they have provided to our country.”
“The Home Depot is a tremendous partner in creating housing solutions for disabled American Veterans of all generations,” said Dale Beatty, retired Staff Sergeant, Purple Heart recipient and co-founder of Purple Heart Homes. “As a combat-wounded Veteran myself, I can attest to the impact that regaining independence can have on a person. It restores your dignity and spirit. Team Depot’s passion for serving veterans gives us confidence that we truly can help to restore independence for Veterans nationwide.”
New Social Media Challenge To Raise $1 Million
Throughout Celebration of Service, Team Depot is inviting customers to ‘celebrate service’ on social media, helping to raise awareness for veterans causes. The Home Depot Foundation will donate up to $1 million, with each social media action equaling $1 toward that goal, to organizations that help senior veterans and veterans with service-connected disabilities including: Gary Sinise Foundation, Housing Assistance Council, Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors, Meals on Wheels America, Operation Finally Home, Operation Homefront, Purple Heart Homes, Semper Fi Fund and the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Here is how to make a difference:
On Twitter and Instagram
People can celebrate service by sharing a photo giving back in their community or honoring a service member on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #ServiceSelfie. For each #ServiceSelfie shared during Celebration of Service, The Home Depot Foundation will donate $1 toward the $1 million goal.
On Facebook
The Team Depot Facebook page will highlight one of its nonprofit partners each Monday during Celebration of Service. Likes, comments and shares of these spotlight posts will also equal $1 toward the $1 million goal.
Stories of Restoring Independence
From Sept. 10 through Veterans Day on Nov. 11, Team Depot will partner with hundreds of nonprofits across the country to restore independence for veterans in every state.
The projects completed throughout the two-month period will address safety and accessibility needs for veterans including:
- David, a U.S. Army veteran who served during the first Gulf War. He earned a Triple Bronze Star and a S.W. Asia medal for his service. While overseas, he was caught in a grenade explosion and was exposed to various poisonous gases. Today, he lives with his wife and service dog Caleb. He volunteers for organizations that help other veterans living with injury and PTSD including Soldier’s Best Friend, Healing Memories and The Mission Continues. Team Depot volunteers will make accessibility modifications to his bathroom and flooring, making it easier for him to maneuver the home with his scooter, and will make several other minor repairs to their home to give David and his wife peace of mind.
- Paul, a 92-year-old WWII veteran who served in the U.S. Army and fought on D-Day in Normandy, helped to liberate Paris and was in Berlin when Germany surrendered. He has struggled to care for himself, and the home he and his wife purchased right before he went overseas, since she passed away three years ago. Team Depot volunteers will work to make his bathroom accessible, among other modifications, to restore his independence.
