MDX Launches New Cash Back Toll Dividend Program

0

MIAMI, June 30, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — MDX Board of Directors announces that since it operates similar to a private sector corporation but with a public purpose, its toll payers should have a financial stake in this state governmental agency.

Believed to be the first of its kind by a government agency in the nation, the MDX Board of Directors, as it closes its fiscal year, will declare a distribution of dividends to its frequent users, after meeting its financial obligations which includes making its annual principal and interest payments, meeting its senior debt coverage ratio, and covering its operation and maintenance costs. MDX's Board of Directors will return the
remaining toll revenues directly to the toll payer through a dividend payment proportionate to their investment in MDX's infrastructure.

"Our Board of Directors is making a pledge to our customers, to continue to operate MDX as efficiently as any major private sector corporation, while meeting its public obligations as a transportation agency. Toll revenues remaining because of efficiency savings, do not belong to us, and we will return those monies to those customers who invested in our expressways in the first place–the daily commuter and daily commercial user," said Maritza Gutierrez, MDX's Chairperson.

"The Cash Back Program demonstrates the Authority's commitment to fiscal responsibility to our customers and bondholders, as well as reflects an on-going sense of good governance at the Authority," said Chief Financial Officer Marie
Schafer.

Schafer indicated that MDX's recent Credit Rating upgrade from an "A-" to an "A" with a stable outlook rating is just one example on how the agency's fiscal responsibility and efficiency will allow the customers/shareholders to reap the rewards of lower interest rates and lower cost of borrowing money to fund transportation infrastructure improvements.

"Our customers are the shareholders who have invested in financing MDX's infrastructure program, so that our expressways will be safe, functional and less congested. When we closed our system this year so that each customer pays for his or her proportionate use of our expressways, we pledged to them that we would utilize their toll money prudently to complete the final reconstruction of State Road 836 within the next five years," said MDX's Executive Director Javier
Rodriguez.

According to Mr. Rodriguez, MDX receives no local, state or federal government tax subsidy, so those loyal customers should be the direct beneficiary of any financial benefits derived from the agency's efficiency in delivering its infrastructure improvements on time and on budget, once its required financial obligations are met.

The criteria of the program would require customers to register each year, be individuals or a business, be a SunPass customer in good standing, and spend more than $2 weekly ($100 annually) in tolls on any of MDX's five expressways. Members who signed up this year for the MDX Advantage Program should expect to receive a cash-back dividend check by mid-December.

About MDX

MDX operates and maintains five user-supported expressways in Miami-Dade County – SR 112/Airport Expressway, SR 836/Dolphin Expressway, SR 874/Don Shula Expressway, SR 878/Snapper Creek Expressway, and SR 924/Gratigny Parkway. MDX expressways are funded by toll revenue, which is reinvested back into the community and funds the construction of projects that alleviate traffic congestion, create thousands of local jobs and provide new opportunities to small and local businesses. The agency also gives back a portion of its annual revenue to drivers through the MDX Advantage cash back program.

Plan to Protect Your Precious Passengers

State Farm® offers simple reminders to help make your summer drive a safer one, no matter how far you’re going.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill., June 30, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Summer is upon us, which means pedestrians, pets, bicycles and motorcycles are out in force, requiring drivers to be even more cautious. No matter where you’re headed, the park close by or family vacation to the beach, it’s important to think about everyone who’ll be traveling with you, especially children and pets.

Experience the interactive Multimedia News Release here: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7493131-state-farm-safe-driving

As a driver, your responsibility is to know the law and protect those in your vehicle. Infants and toddlers need special care and safety seats are required by law in all 50 states.

Some states even have laws that require your furry friends to be restrained. New Jersey, for example, requires pets to be in a restraint or a carrier in the car. The fine for this violation is anywhere from $250 to $1000. Check with your department of motor vehicles or veterinary office for information on pet restraint in your state.

According to Actress and The Pet Lifestyle Coach®, Megan Blake, “unrestrained pets in cars pose serious potential risks, including becoming a major distraction to drivers; and unrestrained pets can easily be seriously injured, killed or even lost after being thrown from a car.”

“Dogs, like children, should never be allowed to ride with their heads out the windows,” says Megan. “Flying debris, including bugs, could harm them, and their lungs or ears could be injured from high-speed wind.”

Keep SUMMER FUN as a driver by following these tips:

Start your trip with GPS and music set; phone stowed. Keep children and pets content by bringing along a favorite toy, treat, or blanket. Always drive 2N2®– 2 eyes on the road, 2 hands on the wheel.

Understand the laws for passenger restraint. Both child and pet passengers require special attention. No passengers belong on a lap or in the bed of a pick-up truck.

Make sure that the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC) of your vehicle is in good condition before your trip begins. This will be especially important for those longer trips. Keep a spare charging cable and car charger in your car for your phone.

Make it a point to pull over if a child or pet needs attention, or if you feel tired or drowsy. This way you keep your eyes on the road.

Eating along the way may be necessary, but you should pull over for this, too. Pack snacks and drinks for everyone, including pets, for convenience.

Remove loose objects from your vehicle, they can become projectiles in a crash, causing injury to people or pets. In the event of a crash, unsecured pets may become frightened and jump from open windows.

Forbid paws and heads from being out the window. This applies to both 2-legged and 4-legged passengers. They could be injured by flying debris.

Understand construction may be underway along your route. Plan ahead and find alternate routes and pet-friendly stops, helping to get you to your destination on schedule.

Never leave children or pets in cars alone for any period of time. Temperatures can rise 19 degrees in just 10 minutes, putting them at risk.

El Clasificado Makes History with EC Classifieds, its 1st English Magazine

0

LOS ANGELES, June 29, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — New times, a new face and new ways to serve the Southern California Market. July 1, 2015 is a date of note for El Clasificado as it marks a new chapter in its already successful 27 years. Having served the Spanish-speaking Latino community since 1988, the company is set to make history as it launches EC Classifieds, a new free publication ready to serve the bilingual and English-speaking communities in Southern California.

EC Classifieds is definitely El Clasificado’s most ambitious print product launched in years. This new publication was created after the PennySaver closed its doors, effectively leaving more than 678 employees out of work and thousands of companies, who still love print advertising, with decreased options for reaching local customers. If history repeats itself for El Clasificado, originally launched to serve thousands of Latino businesses and purchase-motivated consumers with classified listings, then we can expect to see a continuation of the proven successful marketplace that still thrives today.

Recognizing yet another call from local businesses in need, Martha de la Torre, CEO and Co-founder of El Clasificado, stated she is ready to welcome the underserved advertisers and consumers by “bucking industry trends, growing our print circulation, and serving a broader community.” Ms. de la Torre also noted, “We are very proud to once again defy the long breaking rumors that print is dying and launch another free source to serve our communities who still seek jobs as well as products and services in print. EC Classifieds aims to raise the bar in a whole new way, untethered from the constraints of old classified magazines with El Clasificado’s award winning distribution system.”

For Joe Badame, Co-founder and COO of El Clasificado, “Classified listings continue to be the number one sales-generator for El Clasificado and the best way to reach local businesses and consumers in any given language. We’re confident we will be the right, and preferred medium to connect buyers and sellers in the English speaking community and we’ll follow El Clasificado’s success to become the go-to resource for this market.”

EC Classifieds’ inaugural July 1, 2015 edition will hit the streets with 95,000 copies circulating in three regions in over 5,000 heavily trafficked distribution points in the areas of Bakersfield, Orange County and Inland Empire using El Clasificado’s award winning distribution system. In addition, with this new print initiative, El Clasificado is also launching ECClassifieds.com to serve all cross media platform readers.

The message is clearer than ever: Print is alive and growing in Southern California!

How to advertise in EC Classifieds?

Umbilical cord ‘milking’ improves blood flow in preterm infants

For preemies delivered by C-section, technique increases blood pressure, finds NIH-funded study

BETHESDA, Md., June 29, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — A technique to increase the flow of blood from the umbilical cord into the infant’s circulatory system improves blood pressure and red blood cell levels in preterm infants delivered by cesarean section, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health.

The study, published online in Pediatrics, was conducted by researchers at the Neonatal Research Institute at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns in San Diego, and Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California. It was supported by NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).

The technique, known as cord milking, consists of encircling the cord with thumb and forefingers, gently squeezing, and slowly pushing the blood through the cord to the infant’s abdomen. For infants delivered by cesarean, cord milking appears to offer benefits over the standard practice of waiting 45 to 60 seconds before clamping and then cutting the umbilical cord. These benefits, which include greater blood flow to and from the heart, higher red blood cell level, and higher blood pressure, were seen only in the infants delivered by cesarean. Among a smaller number of vaginal births, the researchers found no difference in blood volume between infants undergoing cord milking and those undergoing delayed cord clamping.

“The study results are very encouraging,” said Tonse Raju, M.D., chief of NICHD’s Pregnancy and Perinatology Branch. “The findings need to be confirmed in a larger number of births, but at this point, it appears that umbilical cord milking may prove to be of great benefit to preterm infants delivered via cesarean.”

The study authors note that in 2012, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommended a 30 to 60-second delay before clamping the umbilical cord in all preterm deliveries. The organization has not made a recommendation on when to clamp the umbilical cord in term births, and so physicians typically use their best judgement on the timing of cord clamping in term infants.

Delaying umbilical cord clamping by 30 to 60 seconds is thought to allow sufficient time for blood from the umbilical cord to fill the blood vessels in the infant’s lungs, Dr. Raju explained in an earlier podcast.  Among preterm infants, the delay is believed to protect from intraventricular hemorrhage, or bleeding in the ventricles—the cavities inside the infant’s brain. The hemorrhage is thought to result from low blood pressure, brought on by having too little blood in the circulatory system.  Bleeding in the brain may result in developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and in severe cases, death.

However, Dr. Anup C. Katheria, M.D., a neonatologist at the Neonatal Research Institute at the Sharp Mary Birch Hospital and the study’s first author, noted that some studies failed to find a reduction in intraventricular hemorrhage from delayed cord clamping among preterm infants delivered by cesarean.  The scientists theorized that the use of an anesthetic in cesarean delivery reduces uterine contractions, and in so doing hinders the exodus of blood from the umbilical cord. Cord milking, they reasoned, might compensate for diminished blood flow through the umbilical cord and increase the amount of blood available to the infant.

The researchers enrolled 197 infants in their study. Mothers went into labor at or before the 32nd week of pregnancy. Of these, 154 were delivered by cesarean, with 75 assigned at random to the umbilical cord milking group and 79 assigned to the delayed clamping group. The 43 infants delivered vaginally also were assigned at random to either delayed clamping or umbilical cord milking.

Of the infants undergoing cesarean deliveries, those in the cord milking group had higher blood flow in the superior vena cava, the large vein carrying blood from the brain to the heart, and a higher output of blood from the right ventricle. The two measures, taken together, are an indication of blood circulation in the brain and body. Infants in the cord milking group also had higher blood pressure and higher levels of hemoglobin—a protein used as an indicator of the quantity of red blood cells.

Among the smaller number of infants that were delivered vaginally, the researchers found no differences in the blood volume or blood pressure between the two groups.
