A Dream Fulfilled for 6 Quinceaneras in Foster Care

Quinceanera.com and Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services organized the traditional fifteen party for 6 young girls.

LOS ANGELES, April 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — There are fewer things in life as important for a Latina girl as her quinceañera. For many, this is easily accomplished, since they are surrounded by their family and friends who are willing to spend money, time and effort to make it happen. But for the six girls from the foster care system who couldn’t hold their own without the help of Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services and Quinceanera.com, this dream was one that they never thought would come true.

However, on Saturday March 28, the six girls shared a unique event with friends, their foster family, and a large number of business donors supporting the effort. Thanks to all of them the event did not miss anything. There was food in large quantities with a tasty menu, live entertainment provided by Jesus Mendoza and Pedro Rivera, a DJ to liven up the party, and a small religious ceremony celebrated by Father Michael Rocha.

“I feel excited and inspired,” said one of the chosen six, María Jimenez. Having been born without the sense of hearing, she also noted, “the fact that life has been complicated makes this so special.”

Fernanda Juárez was also radiant along with the other honorees. Dressed beautifully with her chamberlain, she was happy because “I never imagined something like this. It’s a thrill. I am thankful for the privilege of being able to host my quinceanera with the help of the Foster Care system. It has given me many opportunities.”

The event, held at the LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Los Angeles, also included many notable attendees including Martha de la Torre, president and co-founder of El Clasificado, the company that owns Quinceanera.com, who felt “honored” to be a part of the young ladies’ ceremony, referring to the young celebrants as “added family”, and cheered “their serenity to accept the things they cannot change, and the courage to change what they can with a smile and optimism. It is very inspiring to us all.”

Philip L. Browning, director of Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, also expressed his satisfaction with the event specifically noting the “demonstration of affection from all the people working hard to make the lives of others better.”

Enlivening the event, emcee Stephanie Himonidis, also known as Chiquibaby, helped keep the party running smoothly and paid tribute to the companies who helped make the celebration possible including Luna’s Bridal, Beautiful Cosmetics, Marissa’s Cake, Friar Tux, Carlton Hair Salon, and Telic Footwear.

Meanwhile, Christine Devine, news anchor of the Fox 11 News “Wednesday Child” segment for foster care children, further encouraged the Quinceañeras to relish the moment and “embrace their story and go out into the world to make a difference. That is the goal after all.”

Check These Safety Tips Off Your Spring Cleaning To-Do List

These tips from the Window Covering Safety Council can help keep your home safe for children

NEW YORK, April 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — April is the perfect time to clean out your home and get a fresh, organized start to the spring season. There is nothing like that first warm day where you can open all of the windows and let fresh air into the house while you clean. While chores like vacuuming and storing winter clothes are on most people’s minds, child safety checks may not be.

The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) is reminding parents and caregivers that the home may contain potential safety hazards for children. The organization, dedicated to informing consumers about window cord safety, is urging all parents and caregivers to be conscious of child safety this spring. The tips below can be used during any cleaning routine to help keep your home safe for loved ones.

  • Check that your window coverings are safe for children. Only cordless window coverings should be installed in homes with young children, because cords may pose a strangulation hazard. Replace corded blinds, shades and draperies with today’s safer cordless products.
  • If you cannot immediately replace older corded window treatments, be sure to keep all window pull cords and inner lift cords out of the reach of children. Make sure that tasseled pull cords are short and continuous-loop cords are permanently anchored to the floor or wall. You can order free repair kits available through the Window Covering Safety Council at (800) 506-4636 or visit windowcoverings.org
  • Check that all furniture, cribs, beds and climbable surfaces are located away from windows.
  • Clean out your medicine cabinet and throw away any expired over-the-counter medicines. Make sure that all medicines have child-proof containers or are located in a locked cabinet.
  • Test all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and replace the batteries.
  • Inspect any childproofing devices for signs that they may be worn out. Cabinet latches, child safety gates and furniture covers can become less effective after extended use and may need to be replaced.
  • Make sure all outlets have covers that cannot be easily removed and that are large enough to prevent a choking hazard.

For more information on window cord safety in the home, visit www.windowcoverings.org. Connect with WCSC on Facebook and Twitter for more home safety ideas, and to help pass safety on.

Window Covering Safety Council: The (WCSC) is a coalition of major U.S. manufacturers, importers and retailers of window coverings. The Council assists and supports its members in the industry’s ongoing efforts to encourage the use of cordless products in homes with young children, its redesign of corded products, and to support the national ANSI/WCMA standard for the safety of corded window coverings.  WCSC’s activities in no way constitute an assumption of any legal duty owed by its members or any other entity. Ceramic Objects Yield Ancient Narratives of Central America’s First Peoples

Telling Representations of Indigenous Legacies Examined in Key Pieces from the Smithsonian Museum’s Vast Collection

NEW YORK, April 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The National Museum of the American Indian’s George Gustav Heye Center in New York and the Smithsonian Latino Center present “Cerámica de los Ancestros: Central America’s Past Revealed,” a major bilingual exhibition making its New York debut after a first run in Washington, D.C. The exhibition opens Saturday, April 18, and runs through January 2017 in the museum’s West Gallery.

“Cerámica de los Ancestros” provides intimate access to select pieces from rarely seen collections of nearly 12,000 ancient ceramic objects from Central America. Over several years of research, 155 pieces were chosen to illuminate the intricacies of ancient Central America’s first peoples and the societies they developed. Dating as far back as 1000 B.C., the ceramics these diverse communities left behind over the millennia, combined with recent archaeological discoveries, help tell the stories of their ancient cultures and innumerable achievements. The exhibition examines seven regions (Ulúa River, Maya, Lempa River, Greater Nicoya, Central Caribbean, Greater Chiriquí and Greater Coclé) representing distinct Central American cultural areas that are today part of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

The exhibition’s initial debut was built upon more than two years of research in the museum’s Central American ceramics collections sponsored by the Smithsonian Latino Center. Curator Ann McMullen and guest curator Alexander Villa Benitez of George Mason University identified key regional objects from the collection and augmented this selection with significant examples of work in gold, jade, copper, marble, shell and stone.

The exhibition is accompanied by the landmark publication, Revealing Ancestral Central America, edited by Rosemary A. Joyce, available for free digitally. In addition, an interactive website includes 3-D images of select objects, along with a bilingual children’s activity book and family guide. A full schedule of educational and public programs will include hands-on demonstrations, films and extended programming throughout the run of the exhibition.

The National Museum of the American Indian is located at One Bowling Green in New York City, across from Battery Park. The museum is free and open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Thursdays until 8 p.m. (closed Dec. 25). The museum’s website is www.AmericanIndian.si.edu.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration: Partnering For a Safe Food Supply

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration: Partnering For a Safe Food Supply

SILVER SPRING, Md., April 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared April 7 as World Health Day, and this year’s theme is Food Safety.  Food safety is a worldwide issue. Here in the United States, our food supply becomes more global every year. Currently, 15 percent of our food is imported from other countries – but this includes 80 percent of our seafood, nearly 50 percent of our fresh fruit, and 20 percent of our fresh vegetables.

All over the world, growers, manufacturers, transporters, retailers, food service workers, and consumers share a responsibility to reduce food safety risks. To keep foods safe from both familiar and emerging threats, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) grows more dependent every year on collaboration and partnerships across national boundaries and here at home.

Global Partnerships

The 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requires FDA to prevent foodborne illnesses in partnership with the global food safety community. So today, FDA is increasing worldwide collaboration to leverage the food safety work of WHO, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, and the World Trade Organization. FDA works closely with major trading partners and is enhancing public-private partnerships through such education initiatives as World Bank’s Global Food Safety Partnership, Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance, Produce Safety Alliance, and Sprouts Safety Alliance.

FDA is working directly with specific nations, too.  One initiative with Mexico is in place to build an operational partnership on food safety. FDA also is pursuing agreements with countries whose food safety systems are comparable to ours, including Canada and Australia. One is already in place with New Zealand.  FDA has also increased foreign inspections and has offices in China, India, Europe, and Latin America.

FDA at Home

Here in the United States, FDA has wide-reaching impact on food safety efforts. FDA personnel can be found all across the county; currently, the agency employs 1,600 investigators and inspectors, covers approximately 95,000 FDA-regulated businesses, and has offices in 157 U.S. cities. FDA physically examines approximately 1 percent of all imported shipments (roughly 10.7 million import lines annually in FY 2014);  30,000 import shipments a year are detained due to goods that appear to be unacceptable. All told, FDA ensures the safety of a trillion dollars’ worth of products in the United States every year.

Consumers Are Key Partners

FDA reminds consumers that they play the most critical role in the partnership effort to keep food safe from farm to table by carefully following the Four Key Steps to Food Safety:

  1. CLEAN: Wash hands and surfaces often. Bacteria can be spread throughout the kitchen and get onto hands, cutting boards, utensils, counter tops, and food.
  2. SEPARATE:  Cross-contamination can happen when handling raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs. Keep these foods—and their juices—away from ready-to-eat foods.
  3. COOK to the right temperatures. Food is safely cooked when it reaches a high enough internal temperature to kill the harmful bacteria that cause illness.
  4. CHILL foods promptly to slow the growth of harmful bacteria. Use an appliance thermometer and keep the refrigerator at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below and the freezer at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below.

WHO has its own version called “Five Keys to Food Safety” in which it adds the advice to use safe water.
