Each year in the U.S., more than 14 billion pounds of fresh produce is left in the field, meanwhile, 1 in 4 children and 1 in 6 adults in our community face food insecurity every day. In collaboration with their network of agency partners, Mid-Ohio Foodbank has set a goal to raise funds to host 1,000 produce markets in central and eastern Ohio. Each produce market connects roughly 200 low-income families with nearly 10,000 pounds of fresh foods that they can’t afford to buy in stores.

Additionally, Safelite is partnering with local insurance agents to raise funds for “Get Fresh” produce markets at food pantries in their community this summer.

“Just about every central Ohio community has a food pantry to assist our hungry neighbors,” said Jon Cardi, vice president of national client sales and vice chair of Mid-Ohio Foodbank Board of Directors. “With these partnerships, we can give local agencies the opportunity to make a difference in their own neighborhood.”

The public may also make donations at GetFresh.MidOhioFoodbank.org.

New California Poll Shows Strong Support For Common Core And Its Approach

New California Poll Shows Strong Support For Common Core And Its Approach

OAKLAND, Calif., April 20, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — In a poll released today by Children Now, California voters sent a clear message that they want schools to prepare students for a competitive job market by teaching them critical thinking and problem-solving skills (93 percent indicated it is “important” and 67 percent said it is “extremely important”), and 85 percent agree with raising education standards so U.S. students can be more competitive with other countries. Moreover, nine out of ten voters also support measuring students on reading and writing skills across all subjects, including math and science, with 57 percent expressing that it is very important to do so.

In addition to demonstrating strong support for these – and other – components of the Common Core State Standards, more than two thirds (67 percent) favor the use of the updated standards in California schools even when connected to the Common Core brand.  That support was echoed by those who currently have children in K-12 public schools (67 percent) as well as those employed in the education field (82 percent). Californians view Common Core and its key elements as important reforms for California public schools.

“We weren’t surprised to find such widespread support for Common Core among Californians,” said Ted Lempert, president of Children Now. “Common Core is transforming our education system to help ensure student success and close the achievement gap. Thanks to Common Core, our schools will be focusing on preparing all students with the skills they need to become 21st -century learners, be better able to tackle the challenges and seize opportunities they’ll face in college, career and life.”

Common Core is particularly welcomed by California’s diverse populations, with 82 percent of Latinos, 77 percent of African-Americans and 75 percent of Asian voters in support of Common Core. The survey of 1,000 California voters was conducted on behalf of Children Now by the California-based research firm EMC Research.

Additional findings show high support for other Common Core elements, including aligning high school education with college preparation to help close the higher education readiness gap (80 percent  say this is “important”) and providing teachers and schools flexibility to determine what works best in their classrooms (85 percent say this is “important”). Click here to read the poll summary prepared by EMC Research that outlines the key findings.

“California is leading the nation in successfully implementing Common Core and preparing students for the future,” said Lempert. “The education landscape is much more supportive and collaborative in the Golden State as school districts, teachers, students and parents continue adjusting to the standards that increase academic expectations, foster excellence and promote a deeper level of teaching and learning.”

Common Core is a set of academic standards for math and English that define what students should know and be able to do at the end of each school year. The updated standards, which require a greater use of analysis, critical thinking and real-world skills, were developed under the leadership of governors and state superintendents from across the country with input from leaders in K-12 education, higher education, community development and business. Since California adopted the state standards in 2010, local districts and teachers have worked hard to create and execute updated curricula and lesson plans.

Children Now is a leading national group , nonpartisan, umbrella research, policy development, and advocacy organization that works with opinion leaders and decisions makers to craft “win-win” approaches that help all children achieve their full potential. The organization also leads The Children’s Movement of California.

Employment Law Firm In New York Launches Spanish Language Website

Borrelli & Associates, P.L.L.C. launches www.516Abogado.com, a website designed to provide convenient access to legal services for Spanish-speaking workers who have been mistreated by an employer.

NEW YORK, April 20, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — New York Employment law firm, Borrelli & Associates, P.L.L.C., recently launched a Spanish language New York employment lawyer website to provide convenient access to legal services for Spanish-speaking employees who are mistreated by their employer.

www.516abogado.com is designed to put people in quick contact with an experienced employment lawyer. Website visitors will find valuable information about sexual harassment and fair wages/overtime — all written specifically for Spanish-speaking New Yorkers.

“Too many hard-working New Yorkers suffer unfair discrimination or adverse employment action,” said Michael J. Borrelli, Esq., Managing Member at the firm. “When those people happen to speak Spanish, they have historically had an even harder time accessing legal assistance. No more.”

“At Borrelli & Associates, P.L.L.C., our staff is geared to assist native Spanish speakers. We respect Spanish. We want Spanish-speaking workers in New York to know that they matter, that they have a voice, and that we will fight for their rights. Our new website is proof that language doesn’t have to be a barrier to justice,” said Michael Borrelli.

“If your rights have been violated in the workplace, no matter what field you’re in, you can get help from an employment lawyer” Borrelli said. “We’re here for you.”

Because every legal matter is unique, the new website does not provide specific legal advice for any individual cases. Borrelli reminds website visitors that they will still need to discuss the facts of their claim directly with the firm’s New York employment attorneys before determining whether they’ll be able to move forward.

“We are proud to make it easier than ever for mistreated workers to find an employment lawyer,” Borrelli said. “We’re here to help them, and our consultations are free.”

City of San Antonio reminds Fiesta-goers to enjoy a green, fit and friendly celebration

SAN ANTONIO, April 17, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Fiesta San Antonio, the citywide celebration commemorating the history and culture of San Antonio, kicked off celebrations Thursday. The City of San Antonio welcomes locals and visitors from around the world who attend the annual event to enjoy the many festivities through Sunday, April 26.

The City’s Green. Fit. Friendly. Fiesta initiative reminds Fiesta-goers to think “green” by recycling, using alternative modes of transportation, making healthier food choices and promoting a smoke-free environment.

“Five years ago, we responded to community requests by initiating a recycling program for the first time ever during Fiesta,” Mayor Ivy R. Taylor said. “We’ve seen a great change toward picking up litter and recycling rather than throwing away plastic bottles and cups. Let’s make Green. Fit. Friendly. Fiesta as much a tradition as Fiesta itself.”

Fiesta attendees are asked to place plastic bottles and aluminum cans in recycling receptacles at Fiesta events and parades. Blue recycling and brown garbage carts will be stationed at most street intersections along parade routes for convenient disposal of items. Solid Waste Management staff and volunteers from the City of San Antonio and Keep San Antonio Beautiful will distribute yellow-mesh bags to collect recyclables during the Battle of Flowers and Fiesta Flambeau parades. Parade attendees who are seen utilizing the yellow mesh recycling bags correctly may receive a special Fiesta medal for their efforts.

Residents and visitors are also encouraged to utilize the City’s bike share program, San Antonio B-Cycle, for travel to and from Fiesta events. San Antonio offers 55 B-Cycle stations and 450 bikes convenient to downtown with day and weekly passes for purchase. Annual memberships are also offered.

To promote a healthy and family-friendly Fiesta environment, a smoking ban prohibits smoking in areas with public right-of-ways along streets, sidewalks and the San Antonio River during three Fiesta parades: Texas Cavaliers’ River Parade, Fiesta Battle of Flowers Parade and Fiesta Flambeau Parade. Private properties are excluded from the ban, though voluntary compliance is encouraged.

“The Green. Fit. Friendly. Fiesta initiative is one way the City of San Antonio contributes to the overall Fiesta experience,” City Manager Sheryl Sculley said. “Residents and visitors can ensure a positive Fiesta experience for all by recycling, opting for alternative modes of transportation and making healthier food choices.”

As one of San Antonio’s signature events, Fiesta San Antonio is an 11-day celebration attracting nearly 3.5 million visitors each year and featuring more than 100 events that boast music, food, sports, pageantry, military and patriotic observances, exhibits and parades.

Archbishop Blase J. Cupich’s Statement on the Passing of Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop Emeritus of Chicago, April 17, 2015

CHICAGO, April 17, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — A man of peace, tenacity and courage has been called home to the Lord. Our beloved Cardinal George passed away today at 10:45 a.m. at the Residence.

Logo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20150407/197194LOGO

Cardinal George’s life’s journey began and ended in Chicago. He was a man of great courage who overcame many obstacles to become a priest. When he joined the priesthood he did not seek a comfortable position, instead he joined a missionary order, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, and served the people of God in challenging circumstances – in Africa, Asia and all around the world.

A proud Chicagoan, he became a leader of his order and again traveled far from home, not letting his physical limitations moderate his zeal for bringing the promise of Christ’s love where it was needed most. When he was ordained a bishop, he served faithfully, first in Yakima, where he learned Spanish to be closer to his people. He then served in Portland, where he asked the people to continue to teach him how to be a good bishop. In return, he promised to help them become good missionaries.

Cardinal George was a respected leader among the bishops of the United States. When, for example, the church struggled with the grave sin of clerical sexual abuse, he stood strong among his fellow bishops and insisted that zero tolerance was the only course consistent with our beliefs.

He served the Church universal as a Cardinal and offered his counsel and support to three Popes and their collaborators in the Roman congregations. In this way, he contributed to the governance of the Church worldwide.

Here in Chicago, the Cardinal visited every corner of the Archdiocese, talking with the faithful and bringing kindness to every interaction. He pursued an overfull schedule– always choosing the church over his own comfort and the people over his own needs. Most recently, we saw his bravery first hand as he faced the increasing challenges brought about by cancer.

Let us heed his example and be a little more brave, a little more steadfast and a lot more loving. This is the surest way to honor his life and celebrate his return to the presence of God.

As we celebrate in these Easter days our new life in the Risen Lord, join me in offering comfort to Cardinal George’s family, especially his sister, Margaret, by assuring them of our prayers, thanking God for his life and years of dedication to the Archdiocese of Chicago. Let us pray that God will bring this good and faithful servant into the fullness of the kingdom.

May Cardinal George rest in peace.

Learn About Genetically Modified Foods

Science and technology can benefit the consumer

WASHINGTON, April 17, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — “Genetically modified,” and “genetically engineered.” These are the terms often heard when referring to certain foods. What do they mean for you as a consumer?

GobiernoUSA.gov logo

Logo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20141030/155566LOGO

Logo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20141030/155567LOGO

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), foods that have been genetically modified, like fruits, vegetables, oils, cereals, etc., were introduced to the market in the 1990s. Since then, they’ve been sold in stores and supermarkets.

Here you will find information to help you learn about the processes behind genetic engineering and the safety of genetically modified foods.

What is generic engineering?

It’s a scientific method in which the DNA genes of one organism are transferred to another organism. In the case of crops, this method helps foods by:

  • Improving their growth and nutritional profile.
  • Enhancing their flavor and shelf life.
  • Allowing them to survive during droughts and extreme weather.
  • Making foods more resistant to insects, thereby reducing the need for pesticides.

Evaluating genetically modified foods

The FDA regulates and evaluates genetically modified foods. During the evaluation process the FDA:

  • Identifies new features and genetic traits in the food.
  • Assesses whether the food is toxic or contains allergens.
  • Compares the nutritional value of modified foods with foods grown traditionally, including fibers, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals.
  • Determines if the modified foods may have long-term health effects.
  • Analyzes the results to declare which foods comply with safety laws.

When the FDA determines that genetically modified foods are safe to eat, the manufacturers can begin to distribute their products to the market. Certain foods may include nutritional labels indicating that they’ve been genetically modified, but it’s up to the manufacturer to include such information.

If you have questions about genetically modified foods or wish to report problems related to food consumption, call the FDA at 1-888-463-6332.

To learn more about health issues, see USA.gov and GobiernoUSA.gov, the U.S. Government’s official web portals in English and Spanish, and part of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA).

Coming off an all-time record sales year in 2014, the refreshed 5-passenger RDX now packs an even stronger punch in the compact luxury SUV class for 2016 with a more powerful 3.5-liter i-VTEC® V-6 engine, ride and handling refinements, an expanded list of available AcuraWatch™ safety and driver-assistive technologies, restyled exterior and interior elements and a host of new luxury features and technologies, including standard Jewel Eye™ LED projector headlamps and LED taillights. A new line-topping Advance grade ties the improvements and new features together in one comprehensive package.

“The new RDX is another great example of how we are continuing to advance our Acura lineup with a focus on prestige, performance and dynamic proportion,” said Michael Accavitti, senior vice president and general manager of Acura. “With the all-new TLX and upgraded MDX, RDX and ILX all getting a major injection of Acura DNA, we have one of the strongest Acura lineups in a decade.”

The 2016 RDX gets an important performance boost courtesy of its new 3.5-liter SOHC i-VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) cylinder deactivation technology. Peak horsepower and torque output are up to 279 (+6 hp) and 252 lb.-ft. (+1 lb.-ft.), respectively, while sporting a broader torque curve for more immediate and powerful acceleration response–right where it counts. Variable Cylinder Management™ allows for deactivation of three of the engine’s six cylinders under light engine loads, helping the more powerful 2016 RDX increase its highway EPA fuel-economy ratings by 1 mpg, rising to 19/28mpg for AWD models and 20/29mpg for FWD models (city/highway).[1] Driving refinement is further enhanced by new active front and rear engine mounts, updates to the steering control system and increased suspension mount stiffness. Additionally, the RDX’s available all-wheel-drive system – AWD with Intelligent Control – has been tuned for greater rear torque bias to further enhance dynamic stability and all-weather performance.

The 2016 RDX also gets key elements of Acura design DNA with restyled front and rear fascia, including the addition of Acura’s signature Jewel Eye™ LED headlights and LED taillights with light-pipe design on all models and a new three-dimensional grille treatment. All models also receive new wheel designs.

Inside, the new RDX gets a freshened look with a high-contrast silver and black trim plus significant upgrades to both standard and available luxury features and technology, including standard heated front seats and new second-row air-conditioning vents. The RDX with Technology Package adds a new 8-way adjustable power passenger’s front seat (4-way power in base models), Acura’s intuitive dual-screen On-Demand Multi-Information Display (ODMD), HD Radio®, blind spot information (BSI), Multi-view Rear Camera with dynamic guidelines and Rear Cross Traffic Monitor.

A new line-topping Advance Package for the 2016 RDX features unique machined alloy wheels (18″ x 7.5″) with painted gray inserts and adds rain-sensing wipers, front fog lights, Bi-Directional Keyless remote engine start, front and rear parking sensors, ventilated front seats, an auto-dimming driver’s side mirror and the full suite of AcuraWatch™ advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies. Both the Technology and Advance packages can be equipped with the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™. All RDX models with AcuraWatch™ also get a new 4.2-inch full-color TFT Multi-Information Display with expanded, customizable information readouts such as average vehicle speed, fuel economy, fuel range, tire pressure monitoring system (TMPS) and turn-by-turn navigation prompts (when equipped with navigation).

While offered as standard equipment on the new Advance Package, all RDX models can now be equipped with the AcuraWatch™ suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation Braking System™ and Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Departure Warning, along with the Expanded View driver’s side mirror.

In addition to the available AcuraWatch™ technologies, the 2016 RDX offers enhanced crash safety design with numerous changes to its Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure that further improve frontal collision performance. The 2016 RDX targets top-in-class safety ratings – a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The RDX continues to be produced at the company’s East Liberty, Ohio, plant, using domestic and globally sourced parts. In January, Acura marked the sale of its two-millionth North American-made vehicle in America. Last year, approximately 94 percent of all Acura models sold in America were made in the company’s plants in Ohio and Alabama.
