NHCLC/CONEL President Urges Pastors to Discuss Biblical Perspective on Immigration Reform
Dr. Rodriguez Available to Discuss New Study Showing Evangelical Christians are Ready for a Solution
SACRAMENTO, Calif., March 16, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ —
What:
Evangelicals support a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants living in the United States according to a new LifeWay Research study, but they do not associate their opinions with their faith. To help evangelicals better understand the Biblical perspective, Dr. Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference/CONEL (NHCLC/CONEL), is encouraging pastors to preach on the issue of a biblical response to immigration.

“God cares more about people than immigration reform. First and foremost, immigrants are created in the image of God, and we have a responsibility to love and care for them,” said Rodriguez. “Immigration reform is necessary to heal our communities and usher in peace and promote righteousness and justice.”
In its recent study, LifeWay Researchers asked evangelicals to list which factor has most influenced their beliefs about immigration. Approximately 12 percent chose the Bible, and only 2 percent named their church. Two-thirds of evangelicals say their church has never encouraged them to reach out to immigrants.
The study did find that evangelicals are interested in what their faith says on immigration reform. Two-thirds (68 percent) say they would value hearing a sermon about the Bible’s views on immigration.
“It is important for Christians to associate their faith with their political beliefs. I encourage pastors to take on subjects like immigration reform, offering biblical truths on hot-button issues,” said Rodriguez.
Who:
Dr. Samuel Rodriguez is the president of the NHCLC/CONEL, the largest Hispanic Christian organization serving as a representative voice for the more than 100 million Hispanic Evangelicals assembled in over 40,000 U.S. churches and another 500,000 congregations spread throughout the Spanish-speaking community.

All across the United States, bakeries are struggling to stay open despite rising costs and fierce competition. Many of these business owners have talent, drive and passion to spare, but are lacking the customers and cash they need to succeed. Fortunately, Buddy has ample experience both in the kitchen and behind the counter, and he is willing to share that expertise to help other family-run bakeries. Together, they’ll evaluate every ingredient, technique and product, even the place’s decor, to fix the problem and make these bakeries the best in their cities.
Season one includes such cases as “Pastry Is Art,” a Miami bakery owned by Jenny, a Peruvian immigrant. Jenny opened the businesses along with her sister, but unfortunately, work and family isn’t always a good match, and lately the two women have been creating more drama than desserts. In another episode, Buddy comes to the rescue of Kristi, owner of “Kristi G’s Cupcakes & More” in Dallas. A former business executive, Kristi quit her job to open her own bakery, but business hasn’t been going so well. To make things worse, Kristi has serious problems with her employees – her husband, mother-in-law and daughter. In these and all of the cases featured, Buddy listens to the owner’s problems, observes their operations, and advises the families on the best way to create their bakery of their dreams.

New Free Online Course from eDriving Helps Immigrants Get First Driver’s Licenses Under New California Law
New Free Online Course from eDriving Helps Immigrants Get First Driver’s Licenses Under New California Law
Online Course Developed to Help Undocumented Residents Navigate Licensing Process, Pass Licensing Exam Following Passage of AB 60
OAKLAND, Calif., March 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The estimated 1.4 million immigrants now eligible for driver’s licenses in California have a new, free online course and resource center available to help them pass their license exam and complete the licensing process. Developed by online driver education leader eDriving under its DriversEd.com brand, this entirely free, self-paced, fully narrated online course is available in Spanish to help California residents obtain driver’s licenses regardless of legal status in the United States following passage of California Assembly Bill 60 (AB 60). AB 60 took effect earlier this year.
“Hundreds of thousands of Californians will seek their first driver’s licenses in the coming months and our free online course and resources will help them successfully navigate the licensing process, pass their knowledge tests at the DMV, and become safe, legal drivers,” said Celia Stokes, CEO of eDriving. “Each year, less than half of license seekers pass the knowledge exam the first time but Spanish-language license seekers pass the test at substantially lower rates. As a California company and the largest driver’s ed provider both in California and nationwide, we are committed to making drivers smart and roads safe—and this compelled us to provide these resources completely free. We want to ensure maximum access to what could be a life-changing opportunity for these Californians.”
The course covers information necessary to pass the California DMV’s knowledge exam, including: rules of the road, principles of safe driving, licensing regulations, insurance requirements, and more. The narrated, self-paced course is available in clear, easy-to-understand Spanish and can be completed in one to two hours. Information about the licensing process, the course, and other resources to help license seekers can be found at https://driversed.com/california/ab60/ or www.facebook.com/AB60informacion.
In 2013, the California legislature passed AB 60, which requires the DMV to issue driver’s licenses to California residents who cannot prove legal presence in the U.S. but can otherwise meet the state’s licensing requirements. These AB 60 licenses allow holders to drive legally, although they cannot be used for certain federal purposes such as passing through security at airports or federal buildings. The law took effect on January 2, 2015 and the DMV began issuing licenses. During the program’s first two months, the state issued an estimated 129,000 AB 60 licenses, according to California DMV data. The legislation was authored by California Assemblymember Luis Alejo (D-Salinas).
“Expanding access to licenses will improve safety, mobility, and economic opportunity for all Californians,” stated Alejo. “It’s great to have a free, trustworthy resource from driver training experts to help people get through the licensing process successfully and make their first contact with the DMV simpler and more productive.”
The law took effect at the start of the year and DMV began issuing licenses on January 2, 2015. During the program’s first two months, the state issued about 129,000 AB 60 licenses, according to California DMV data. In all, the DMV reports that 236,000 people applied for AB 60 licenses during the first month and are at various stages in the licensing process.
California joins nine other states and the District of Columbia in issuing licenses to people independent of their immigration status. Most of these state laws have taken effect during the last two years, with similar legislation introduced in additional states this year.
