Videos, Interviews and Presentations from PIAAC Conference on the OECD’s Survey of Adult Skills Available Online

PRINCETON, N.J., July 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Videos of interviews and presentations from some of the world’s leading experts in large-scale international assessment and research are now available online from Educational Testing Service (ETS). The featured videos were recorded during the PIAAC Invitational Research Conference.

The conference took place in Washington, D.C., last November, and attracted over 200 participants from 30 countries.

The focus of the conference was the Survey of Adult Skills, which is part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), the largest and most innovative international comparative assessment of adults ever undertaken.

The first round of PIAAC involved more than 160,000 adults, ages 16–65, and was administered in 24 countries and in more than 30 languages. It targeted skills in literacy, numeracy and problem solving in technology-rich environments.

“From the start, our goal was to disseminate information from this conference in both print and digital formats,” says Irwin Kirsch, Director of the ETS Center for Global Assessment and ETS’s Ralph W. Tyler Chair in Large-Scale Assessment. “Toward that end, I am pleased that the edited videos of the conference presentations are now available.”

The Survey of Adult Skills measures the key cognitive and workplace skills needed for individuals to participate in society and for economies to prosper. The first results from the survey were released on October 8, 2013. The evidence from this survey helps countries better understand how education and training systems can nurture these skills. Educators, policymakers and labor economists can use this information to develop economic, education and social policies designed to enhance the skills of adults.

The ETS Research & Development division’s Center for Global Assessment led the design, development and implementation of the survey. Survey results generated media attention around the world, including an editorial in The NewYork Times.

The PIAAC Invitational Research Conference on “The Importance of Skills and How to Assess Them” was organized by ETS with support from the OECD and held shortly after the release of the results. ETS has also made international data from the survey available to the public via the ETS-developed International Data Explorer and a set of public-use data files that can be downloaded from OECD’s website.

The opening video — The Importance of PIAAC — features interviews with Kirsch; Thomas Friedman, author and New York Times columnist; Alison Wolf, economist and professor of public sector management at King’s College in London; Tom Brokaw, broadcast journalist and author; Angel Gurria, OECD Secretary-General; and Andreas Schleicher, Deputy Director for Education and Skills, OECD.

The site offers an additional 38 videos of presentations, discussions and interviews with the presenters, who included policy and measurement researchers from around the world. Papers from the conference are expected to be published in early 2015.

Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll Announces Pendency of Class Action In Khoday et al., v. Symantec Corp., et al.

MINNEAPOLIS, July 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The following statement is being issued by Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll regarding the class action titled Khoday et al., v. Symantec Corp., et al.(D. Minn.).

To consumers who purchased Extended Download Service (“EDS”) for Norton products or Norton Download Insurance (“NDI”) between January 24, 2005 and March 10, 2011.

Consumers who purchased EDS and NDI for their Norton software have sued Defendants, alleging that Defendants a) misrepresented that EDS and NDI were necessary if a customer wanted to redownload their software more than 60 days after purchase; and b) failed to disclose that customers could redownload their Norton software for free on Defendants’ own websites or buy EDS later if needed.

The Court has determined that this lawsuit can proceed as a class action on behalf of the following group of persons (the Class): All persons in the United States who purchased Extended Download Service (“EDS”) for Norton products or Norton Download Insurance (“NDI”) between January 24, 2005 and March 10, 2011 (the “Class Period”).

If you are included in the above definition, you are included in the Class unless you exclude yourself.  If you are unsure whether you are included in the Class, you can write the lawyers representing the Class by letter; their contact information is listed below.

IF YOU ARE A MEMBER OF THE CLASS, YOU MUST CHOOSE WHETHER TO REMAIN IN THE CLASS OR OPT OUT.

What is this lawsuit about?
This lawsuit alleges that Defendants violated consumer protection laws and the common law – specifically, that Digital River violated the Minnesota Consumer Fraud Act, and that Symantec violated California’s Unfair Competition Law and Consumer Legal Remedies Act, by failing to disclose to Class members that free alternative methods to redownload purchased software existed. Defendants have denied the claims in this lawsuit and maintain that Plaintiffs and Class members are not entitled to monetary relief.

What are my options?
You have two options if you are a member of the Class:

Option #1:  Remain in the Class.  If you are included in the Class you do not need to do anything to remain a member of the Class.  If you remain a member of the Class and the Court awards monetary benefits against either Defendant or Defendants settle these claims, you will share in any monetary benefits awarded to the Class.  If you stay in the Class and the Class Representatives obtain money either as a result of a trial or a settlement, Class members will be notified about how to apply for a share (or how to ask to be excluded from any settlement, if the Court permits a second period of exclusion).  If you remain part of the Class, you will be legally bound by all of the Orders the Court issues and judgments the Court makes in this class action, and you will not be able to sue Symantec or Digital River in a separate lawsuit about the same claims in this lawsuit.

Option #2:  Exclude Yourself.  Excluding yourself – sometimes called “opting out” – from the Class means that you will not participate in the Class.  If the Class is successful at trial or obtains a settlement, you will not receive any money or benefits from the lawsuit.  Likewise, you will not be legally bound by the Court’s judgments in this class action and will be able to pursue your own separate lawsuit for these claims. To exclude yourself from the Class, you must send a letter stating that you want to be excluded from Khoday v. Symantec, et al. to Class Counsel.  You must be sure to include your name, address, telephone number, and signature.  You must mail your exclusion request so that it is postmarked no later than September 8, 2014.

Who represents the Class?

The Court has appointed the following law firms to serve as the attorneys for the Class:

Lead Counsel for the Class:
COHEN MILSTEIN SELLERS & TOLL P.L.L.C.
Andrew N. Friedman
Douglas J. McNamara
1100 New York Avenue, N.W.
Suite 500, East Tower
Washington, D.C.  20005-3964

THE WENTZ LAW FIRM

Minneapolis, MN 55401

McLAUGHLIN & STERN LLP

New York, NY  10016

You have the right to hire your own attorney (at your own expense), but if you remain in the Class, you are not required to hire a separate attorney.

How do I get more information?
This is only a summary of this lawsuit and your rights as a potential Class member.
If you would like additional information, you may obtain case information at DownloadInsuranceClassAction.com or by calling 1 (855) 382-6395. You may also obtain additional information regarding this lawsuit by reviewing the papers on file in this litigation, which may be inspected at the Office of the Clerk of Court, United States District Court for the District of Minnesota, United States Courthouse, 300 South Fourth Street, Suite 202, Minneapolis, MN 55415 during business hours (or may be accessed online for a fee by obtaining a password at www.uscourts.gov).

CHCI Congratulates Julian Castro on His Confirmation as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development

WASHINGTON, July 9, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) congratulates San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro on his Senate confirmation today to lead the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). With this confirmation, Sec. Castro will join the top ranks of Latino appointees including Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez, Small Business Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet, and Office of Personnel Management Director Katherine Archuleta, among others.

Castro will also be the third Latino to serve as Secretary of HUD since the department named its first secretary in 1966. He follows in the footsteps of Henry Cisneros, who also served as San Antonio mayor before serving in President Bill Clinton’s administration as the Secretary of HUD, and Mel Martinez, who served as Secretary of HUD under President George W. Bush.

“I am thrilled that the nation will benefit from Mayor Castro’s talent and skill as our next HUD Secretary,” said Esther Aguilera, CHCI President & CEO. “In this important role in our nation’s government, Castro will serve as an excellent role model to all young, emerging Latino leaders behind him. CHCI applauds the Senate for recognizing his great achievements as a visionary leader and for taking swift action to confirm his nomination.”

Mayor Julián Castro, a San Antonio native, earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University with honors and distinction and a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School. In 2001, at the age of 26, he became the youngest elected city councilman at that time in San Antonio history.

In 2009, Castro was elected mayor and became the youngest mayor of a Top 50 American city. Among his accomplishments as a three-term mayor, Castro focused on revitalizing the city’s urban core, attracting 21st century jobs to the region, positioning San Antonio to be a leader in the New Energy Economy, and raising the educational attainment of youth of all ages – with a particular focus on working to expand quality pre-kindergarten education. He is the identical twin brother to CHCI Board of Directors member, Rep. Joaquín Castro.

Shepherd Smith Edwards & Kantas LLP Files Case Involving Jose Ramirez, Carlos Freire, And UBS Financial Services, Inc.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, July 9, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Lawyers with the Securities Law Firm of Shepherd Smith Edwards & Kantas LLP, http://www.ubs-taxfree-puertorico.com/, has filed a case on behalf of a former client of Jose Ramirez (“Ramirez”), Carlos Freire (“Freire”), and UBS Financial Services, Inc. (“UBS”).  The case alleges that Ramirez and/or Freire recommended and convinced the client to invest virtually her entire net worth in Puerto Rico municipal bonds and UBS proprietary Puerto Rico municipal bond funds.  These securities were marketed and sold as low risk investments that would pay the clients high, tax advantaged dividends.

Logo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20131011/DA96469LOGO

Ramirez, the original broker for the client, was terminated by UBS for encouraging clients to invest proceeds of loans in UBS proprietary Puerto Rico bond funds.  Ramirez was later replaced by Freire as the broker for the client.  According to the claim, neither Ramirez nor Freire warned the client that UBS’s proprietary Puerto Rican bond funds are highly leveraged, that UBS bonds were potentially unstable, and that UBS was artificially inflating and/or supporting the market for its Puerto Rico bond funds.  As a result, this was a highly speculative investment strategy unsuitable for almost any client.

The claim alleges that the client followed the brokers’ recommendations to make these investments and ultimately lost roughly half of her life savings in a short period of time.  If you are or were a client of Jose Ramirez and/or Carlos Freire, or suffered losses in any other municipal bond investments made at the recommendation of your broker, contact the law firm of Shepherd, Smith, Edwards & Kantas LLP for a free, confidential evaluation of your account.  We have a team of attorneys, consultants and staff with more than 100 years of combined experience in the securities industry and in securities law. Shepherd Smith Edwards & Kantas LLP Files Claims On Behalf Of Multiple Clients Of David Lugo And UBS Financial Services, Inc.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, July 9, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Lawyers with the Securities Law Firm of Shepherd Smith Edwards & Kantas LLP, http://www.ubs-taxfree-puertorico.com/, have filed more claims on behalf of former clients of David Lugo (“Lugo”) and UBS Financial Services, Inc. (“UBS”).  These cases allege that Lugo recommended clients invest huge portions of their accounts, which also were often large concentrations of the clients’ total net worth, in Puerto Rico municipal bonds and UBS proprietary Puerto Rico municipal bond funds.  These securities were marketed and sold as low risk investments that would pay the clients high, tax advantaged dividends.

Logo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20131011/DA96469LOGO

The claims further allege that Lugo recommended to many of his clients that they borrow money against their UBS accounts and invest the proceeds in even more municipal bonds and bond funds, claiming this was a low risk way of increasing their returns.  According to the claim, Lugo did not warn the clients that what he was recommending was expressly not allowed under UBS rules and U.S. banking regulations, and was actually an incredibly high risk investment strategy, contrary to Lugo’s promises.

The claims also allege Lugo did not warn clients that UBS’s proprietary Puerto Rican bond funds are highly leveraged, that UBS bonds were potentially unstable, and that UBS was artificially inflating and/or supporting the market for its Puerto Rico bond funds.  Between the borrowed money and the large risks inherent in the UBS Puerto Rico bond funds, this was a highly speculative investment strategy unsuitable for almost any client.  As a result of these recommendations, Lugo’s clients saw tremendous losses in their accounts, which represented almost all of the clients’ life savings.  Attorneys with the law firm Shepherd, Smith, Edwards & Kantas LLP are currently in the process of trying to recover these losses from UBS for Lugo’s clients.

If you are or were a client of David Lugo, or suffered losses in any other municipal bond investments made at the recommendation of your broker, contact the law firm of Shepherd, Smith, Edwards & Kantas LLP for a free, confidential evaluation of your account.  We have a team of attorneys, consultants and staff with more than 100 years of combined experience in the securities industry and in securities law.
