The annual SHPE Conference is the largest gathering of Hispanic student and professional STEM talent in the nation. The SHPE Conference introduces students to STEM careers, offers professional networking opportunities, provides professional development and attracts companies seeking highly qualified Hispanic technical talent.

The SHPE Conference offers workshops, featured guests speakers, award ceremonies and competitions. Participants are encouraged to take advantage of attractive conference programs and opportunities, such as the following:

Career Fair Expo
The SHPE Career Fair Expo is the largest Latino-focused STEM career fair in the world. The SHPE Career Fair Expo provides Hispanic students and professionals with the opportunity to meet representatives from sponsoring corporations, non-profit organizations, government agencies and graduate schools to learn about the latest technologies and career options in STEM fields. The day and a half event features over 200 companies representing a variety of STEM companies including Fortune 500 companies, such as Northrop Grumman, Boeing and Facebook.

Corporate Tours
The conference offers a Corporate Tours program, which provides conference participants with an opportunity to experience new technologies, interact with potential recruiters, and network with engineers and scientists at leading STEM companies. This year’s corporate tours are hosted by Exelon Corporation, John Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, Northrop Grumman Corporation and Turner Construction Company.

Competitions
The conference features competitions that enable undergraduate and graduate participants to not only showcase their talents to recruiters and peers, but also provide a platform to test their skills in real-world environments. The conference provides four competitions for participants that range from presenting technical papers and posters to Extreme Engineering’s 24-hour competition and Nissan’s Autonomous Vehicle Design.

Pre-College Symposium
The Pre-College Symposium, hosted at University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering, brings over 500 junior and high school students together for a full-day of STEM engagement and awareness. The symposium introduces STEM careers through hands-on activities and workshops. Students will have the opportunity to hear opening remarks from Bruk Berhane, Assistant Director Office of Undergraduate Recruitment and Scholarships of the A. James Clark School of Engineering and closing remarks from Dr. Darryll Pines, Dean of the Clark School.

The SHPE Conference offers educational programs and signature events for students and professionals alike. Participants can choose from general sessions ranging from leadership development to academic excellence and career development. Specialized tracks are offered for participants interested in Latinas in STEM, preparing for the corporate work environment and lectures from distinguished deans and STEM professionals. Exclusive to SHPE’s conference is the STAR Awards banquet, which recognizes key individuals and corporations who have contributed significantly to support Hispanics in STEM.

“SHPE conference offers both students and professionals opportunity for learning and advancement,” said Richard Morley, SHPE CEO. “As 70% of the new jobs in STEM between 2008 and 2018 will be in computer science related engineering, this year we have a special emphasis on increasing our membership in computer science and technology. We encourage participants to check out all of the sessions related to computer science and engineering, and especially the Tech Roundtable. We are happy to feature the GitHub Startup Lounge in the Career Fair, where participants can mingle with start-up execs and learn about launching their own business.”
