Alzheimer’s Association And The Ventanillas De Salud Collaborate To Increase Access To Alzheimer’s Information And Resources
CHICAGO, Sept. 25, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Alzheimer’s Association, the Secretariat of Health of Mexico and the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, through its Ventanillas de Salud Program (VDS) announced today a nationwide collaboration to better reach and engage Mexicans living in the United States with important information relating to Alzheimer’s detection, diagnosis, care, treatment, research and advocacy.
VDS is a binational collaborative program between government, non-profit agencies working together to increase access to health care, raise awareness around health related issues and promote healthy lifestyle choices among low-income migrants among Latino communities in the United States.
Developed by the Secretariat of Health and the Institute for Mexicans Abroad and implemented through 50 Mexican consulates in the United States, VDS provides health information, counseling and referrals to health services available in local communities. VDS also works to improve access to primary and preventive health services and to increase insurance coverage for Mexican families.
Through the collaboration announced today, the Alzheimer’s Association will work with VDS to provide education materials and information on local programs and resources available to help families affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
“The Alzheimer’s Association collaboration with VDS will help us reach a vulnerable population with needed resources and information to help individuals living with the disease and their families better navigate the challenges of Alzheimer’s,” said Marshawn Brown, Director, Diversity & Strategic Alliances for the Alzheimer’s Association.
The collaboration addresses a critical need. Hispanic older adults are an especially vulnerable population. They carry a greater burden of chronic disease and are about one and one-half times more likely than older whites – to have Alzheimer’s or another dementia. In addition, Hispanics are at greater risk for vascular disease. Contributing risk factors for vascular disease, including diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol may also be risk factors for Alzheimer’s and stroke-related dementia.
In 2010, it was estimated that approximately 31.8 million people of Mexican origin were living in the United States. The U.S. Hispanic older adult population is the fastest-growing segment of the baby boomer generation. Today, U.S. Hispanics make up about 8 percent of the older adult population, but by 2050, they will make up nearly 20 percent of this population.
Hispanics/Latinos may also receive an Alzheimer’s diagnosis at a later stage of the disease. Delays in diagnosis mean that Hispanics/Latinos are not getting treatments when they are most likely to be effective at improving quality of life. In addition, early detection and diagnosis can allow for earlier use of available treatments that may provide some relief of symptoms and help maintain independence longer. Delays in diagnosis also mean that Hispanics/Latinos with Alzheimer’s or other dementias may miss the opportunity to make important legal, financial and care plans while they are still capable, as well as making their preferences known to their families.
“Mexican Nationals are considered the highest priority of the Government of Mexico, therefore the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) seeks to understand the specific needs of the population and promote strategies that meet those needs. This collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association will strengthen the actions of access to health carried out by the Consular Network, to bring more and better services to the Mexican migrant population that has been affected by this disease, ” said Emb. Juan Carlos Mendoza, Director of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad. For its part, Hilda Dávila, General Director of International Relations of the Ministry of Health, said “We recognize the important work of the Alzheimer’s Association in disseminating useful information to our community in order to promote healthy behaviors and advance early detection of symptoms.”
The Alzheimer’s Association will work with VDS and the Mexican Consulate to identify and navigate barriers to accessing health care within the Hispanic/Latino community. Local Alzheimer’s Association offices will play a key role in the VDS collaboration. These offices will work directly with VDS programs across the country to promote local programs and services. Additional activities may include:
- Dissemination of Alzheimer’s Association information and materials through VDS programs in all 50 Mexican consulates within the U.S.
- Education and training for consulate staff and community partners to increase access to Alzheimer’s information and resources. For example, efforts to recruit and train promotores (community health workers) to help bridge cultural and linguistic barriers that have previously slowed access to Alzheimer’s information and resources.
- Collaboration on initiatives, such as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, and Hispanic Heritage Month.
“We are excited about our collaboration with VDS,” Brown said. “It will allow the Alzheimer’s Association to reach more families who need help. Alzheimer’s disease is challenging under any circumstance, but even more so when you lack information and support services. This collaboration will help bridge this gap.”

Café Bustelo® Provides Financial Support To Hispanic Students Seeking College Degrees
ORRVILLE, Ohio, Sept. 25, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today, Café Bustelo® in partnership with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) awarded ten deserving Latino students from around the country with the Café Bustelo El Café del Futuro Scholarship. In its fifth year, the brand has provided $230,000 to date in college scholarships to 46 Latino students nationwide.
Experience the interactive Multichannel News Release here: https://www.multivu.com/players/English/8240351-cafe-bustelo-el-cafe-del-futuro-scholarship/
Starting in February, Café Bustelo challenged students across the nation to submit an 800-word essay describing how their heritage, family and the community in which they grew up inspired them to obtain a college degree and how they plan on giving back to their respective communities.
More than 1,500 eligible applications (nearly 500 more applications than 2017) were received and reviewed by a qualified review committee. The following students have been selected as the official recipients, awarded for their ambition to further their education and unparalleled commitment to their communities:
- Patricia Jaimes (East Lansing, Mich.): Despite financial difficulties, Patricia’s parents emphasized the importance of obtaining a good education. Between balancing multiple jobs, participating in extracurricular activities and being the mother of a child with disabilities, Patricia chose to pursue higher education and maintain a high GPA. Now, she is currently working on a Ph.D. in earth and environmental sciences and hopes her research will contribute to structural and social changes within higher education and STEM communities, making them more inclusive for ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.
- Airam Caldera (Ind.): As the first-generation American of Mexican immigrants, Airam’s parents’ hardships are what fueled her desire to earn not one, but several college degrees. Over the course of her undergraduate experience, she struggled to find a niche for herself until she found support with Sigma Pi Alpha at the University of California, San Diego, a Latina-based multicultural sorority. Now focusing on her Master of Biomedical Sciences at Marian University – College of Osteopathic Medicine, Airam plans on specializing in geriatrics to care for the immigrant community that collectively raised her.
- Gabriela Peterson (Albuquerque, N.M.): Her desire to break the vicious cycle associated with difficult socioeconomic conditions that existed in her community as a child significantly impacted Gabriela’s motivation to obtain her college degree, becoming a first-generation college student in her family. When Gabriela became a high school teacher, she found sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for learning with children in her own community so rewarding. Now in doctoral studies, Gabriela intends to develop the necessary transferable skills to become a socially-just educational leader.
- Norge Arnaiz (Davie, Fla.): As a first-generation Cuban-American, Norge came from humble beginnings. Seeing his parents sacrifice everything to provide their family with the best opportunities inspired Norge to receive an education and major in accounting. It wasn’t until he joined the Association of Latino Professionals for America that he was able to find a mentor with a similar cultural background and interests. Norge credits the organization with helping him become the successful student he is today and showing him the impact Latinos could have on society.
- Juan Rivera (Miami, Fla.): Originally from a rural community in Nicaragua with limited healthcare resources available, Juan was determined to pursue a medical degree to help people in countries where medical help is scarce. He was inspired by his parents’ work ethic and their desire for a better life for their family in moving from Nicaragua to the United States. After witnessing others struggle to obtain quality healthcare, Juan found his passion in serving those who need it most.
- Bianca Esquivel-Bolanos (Mission, Texas): After Bianca’s parents decided to move from an impoverished neighborhood in Parlier, California to a town in South Texas with more opportunity, Bianca was determined to take advantage of all the educational resources available. She sought every opportunity to enrich her life whether it was through extracurricular activities, networking or spiritual meditation. Humbled by her parents’ sacrifices to give her family a better life, Bianca’s goal is to publish research on the modern problems Hispanic youth face and uncover viable ways to help address depression and anxiety caused by cultural stereotypes and detached familial relationships.
- Germain Medina (Hollister, Calif.): Determined to become a physician and help support those who are disadvantaged in his community, Germain has worked relentlessly towards realizing that dream despite hardships throughout his life. With a 4.17 grade point average, Germain is excelling both in and out of the classroom. He is the president and founder of Club Biology, which tutors students in all areas of science and is the Vice President of Robotics Club. Germain is also involved in the Red Cross Club and Pre-Health Club as well. At home, he is an integral part of his father’s business and cares for his grandfather who suffers from a mental illness.
- Maria Sinkule (Addison, Ill.): Inspired by her parents’ selfless values and humble upbringing, Maria is a first-generation Mexican American currently pursuing a doctorate in Social Work. Having grown up without much, she learned from her parents the values of family, education and always remembering her roots. Maria plans to use her doctorate to encourage others to pursue higher education degrees and teach at the university level.
- Christopher Cardenas Cahun (Dixon, Calif.): Christopher is deeply invested in giving back to the Latino community that has provided him with so many valuable life lessons. He plans to give back by investing in scholarship opportunities, leadership conferences, and college-oriented programs. Christopher credits his educational support system with providing him with all the tools needed to succeed in college, but he is grateful most of all for his solid family support. He would like to invest in family support systems so that more children can grow up in safe and supportive environments.
- Eduardo Martinez (Collegedale, Tenn.): As a youth leader in his community, Eduardo encourages others to do well in school and take pride in their accomplishments. He makes himself available to local teens to provide them with support, advice and encouragement to continue pursuing their dreams, no matter their situation. An advocate for Latinos, Eduardo would like to create an organization offering scholarships to Hispanic youth to help further their educations.

Exterior and Interior Design
The 2019 Civic Sedan and Coupe both feature refreshed styling that subtly updates the highly popular 10th-generation Civic design to give America’s favorite car an even more aggressive impact while simultaneously imparting a more premium feel. The restyled lower bumper gives Civic a wider look and is complemented by a new blacked-out headlight treatment. The Honda-signature “wing” design on the grille also gets a new gloss black treatment on Sedan and Coupe. On Touring trims, the LED headlights have been upgraded with a new design to give the lights a wider and longer beam. The new, more aggressive tone is given an air of sophistication by the subtle use of chrome accents on the front bumper. At the rear, Civic Sedan’s lower bumper receives a chrome strip to emphasize Civic’s premium feel. Civic also receives three new colors: Platinum White Pearl, Molten Lava Pearl (Sedan only), and Tonic Yellow Pearl (Coupe only).
Inside, Civic Sedan and Coupe models benefit from a number of subtle improvements centered on providing a more refined driving and ownership experience. The Display Audio system, standard on Sport trims and above, has been updated with a new interface that includes a volume knob and physical buttons for key functions, in addition to improved Bluetooth® integration with easier device pairing. Additional improvements on all trims include redesigned steering wheel controls for more intuitive operation, a new center console cupholder that better holds larger beverages, and updated dash trim with gunmetal gray on LX trims (LX and EX for Coupe), metallic finish on EX, EX-L and Touring sedans (Touring only for Coupe), and with an embossed finish on Sport trims. All Civic Sedans and Coupes also benefit from additional sound insulation in the floor, trunk, and front fenders, with new sound insulation in the rear fenders.
New Civic Sport Sedan and Coupe
Slotted between the LX and EX trims, the 2019 Civic Sedan and Coupe Sport trims utilize a responsive 2.0-liter engine paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or optional Continuously Variable automatic Transmission (CVT). Visual enhancements consist of unique exterior styling cues such as fog lights with gloss black trim and upsized 18-inch wheels (+1 inch) wrapped in the same all-season tires as the Civic Si. Out back, a black-painted decklid spoiler, Sport badging and a sport muffler capped by a wide, center-mounted chrome exhaust finisher styled after Civic Si complete the package.
Inside, Coupe and Sedan sport trims get red gauges, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, paddle shifters (CVT-equipped models), textured aluminum sport pedals, and unique seat materials with a combination of synthetic leather and cloth. The sport trim also gets upgraded tech over the LX model along with an 8-speaker audio system as described below.
Features and Technology
Standard equipment on Civic Sedan and Coupe models includes the Honda Sensing® suite of safety and driver-assistive systems, including new automatic high beams. Additional standard features on all trims include upscale items such as an electronic parking brake with an automatic Brake Hold feature and a 7-inch digital TFT instrument cluster.
Civic Sport models build off the LX trim with the aforementioned exterior and interior design upgrades, and a redesigned 7-inch Display Audio system that includes Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integration.
Civic EX models receive the new Display Audio system as well, in addition to newly standard dual zone automatic climate control with new fan speed buttons. New for 2019, Civic EX Sedan also receives an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Additional Civic EX features include 17-inch alloy wheels, a power moonroof, Honda’s exclusive LaneWatch™ side-view camera, hands-free entry with push button start, an updated audio system with 8 speakers (10 speakers in Civic Coupe), heated front seats and exterior mirrors and remote start. The EX-L trim, exclusive to Civic Sedan, adds leather-trimmed seats, an auto-dimming rear view mirror and Homelink®.
At the top of the Civic Sedan and Coupe lineup, the Touring trim adds newly designed 18-inch wheels, paddle shifters (with CVT) and sport pedals. Also included on Civic Touring are LED headlights that have been redesigned for a longer and wider beam. Rain-sensing wipers, side-mirror turn signals, heated rear seats (sedan only), embedded navigation and an updated audio system are also feature upgrades for all Civic Touring trims, while Civic Touring Sedans also get a 4-way power passenger seat.
Powertrain and Chassis
The 2019 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe LX and Sport trims are powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 158 horsepower and 138 lb.-ft. of torque. Connected to either a 6-speed manual transmission or CVT, the 2.0-liter provides lively performance and laudable EPA fuel economy ratings. CVT-equipped Civic EX, EX-L and Touring trims are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with peak output of 174 horsepower (SAE net) 162 lb.-ft. of torque (SAE net). From LX to Touring, Civic has a well-earned reputation of being fun to drive. Civic Sport builds on this reputation with improved handling thanks to exclusive shock absorbers, rear lower control arms, and a stiffer front stabilizer bar in addition to 18-inch wheels and tires.

Packaging
The 2019 Civic Sedan and Coupe continue to offer class-leading interior volume that rivals many midsize cars. Front seat passengers enjoy generous amounts of leg and headroom and a cleverly designed center console offers a surprising amount of flexible storage space. Civic also offers additional storage on a tray under the dash for items that may require quick access, such as a wallet. This additional storage also houses the USB input used for functions including the Display Audio system’s Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integration, allowing drivers to keep their phones out of sight while driving. Alternatively, a convenient pass-through to the upper section lets drivers easily secure their phones while keeping the USB cord from cluttering the interior. Next to the USB input is a convenient 12-volt power source.
Rear seat passengers are treated to excellent legroom and headroom as well, and in Touring Sedan trims the outboard seating positions offer two levels of heating. The generous, midsize-like cargo space – up to 15.1 cu. ft. in sedan and up to 12.1 cu. ft. in coupe – is supplemented by 60/40 split folding rear seatbacks (single-piece in LX) to accommodate longer loads when necessary, with release handles for the seatbacks conveniently located in the trunk and the passenger compartment.
Safety Performance and Driver Assistive Features
For the 2019 model year, Civic Sedan and Coupe models feature the Honda Sensing® suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies as standard equipment on all trims. Honda Sensing® includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow, Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) incorporating Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) and Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) incorporating Lane Departure Warning (LDW). Additionally, all Honda Civic models receive automatic high beams as part of their Honda Sensing® package.
The 2019 Honda Civic also features a long list of standard active and passive safety features, including Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control, driver and passenger front and side airbags, side-curtain airbags with rollover sensor, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist and Honda’s next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. The Civic is designed to achieve a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). All models feature a multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines, while EX trims and higher have Honda LaneWatch™ as standard equipment.
