He is cared for by his mother, Abigaíl, and his godmother, Cristal, to forge him in an environment in which he becomes independent and fends for himself without them suspect that someone always protects him.

Whenever he can, despite being special, he socializes with his neighbors who love him and sometimes motivate him to do mischief like any child but also that he feels safe and protected all the time, even if his worst enemy sleeps at home and goes to come the moment when his little life changes.”

New Clean Assist Program Allows Carbon Free Charging for Toyota Plug In Owners in California

0
New Clean Assist Program Allows Carbon Free Charging for Toyota Plug In Owners in California

PLANO, Texas, May 20, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Reducing your carbon footprint has never been easier, or less expensive, thanks to the new Clean Assist program from Toyota. Clean Assist allows eligible owners of the Prius Prime or RAV4 Prime in California to offset their vehicle charging with 100% renewable energy no matter where the vehicles are plugged in. And there’s no cost to participate in program.

New Clean Assist Program Allows Carbon Free Charging for Toyota Plug In Owners in California

Here’s how it works:

  1. Owners of eligible Prius Prime or RAV4 Prime opt into the program through the Toyota App
  2. The Toyota App tracks the amount of electricity used during charging.
  3. Toyota then generates, or buys, an equivalent amount of California-sourced Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), an EPA-recognized program that records the generation and usage of green energy. It then sends evidence of the matching amounts to the California Air Resources Board (CARB), thereby ensuring that all Toyota PHEV charging activity is matched with zero-carbon electricity.

Whether owners charge up their vehicles at home, the office or on the road, the energy will be matched with 100% renewable power. How much renewable power is easily tracked through the Toyota App where owners see the amount of CO2 they have avoided through the Clean Assist program. Owners can opt out of the program at any time and for any reason through the app.

Toyota is choosing to voluntarily participate in the CARB Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS). This program seeks to reduce California transportation GHG emissions, including through the use of renewable electricity to charge EVs. Charging vehicles with renewable electricity can generate LCFS credits which can then be sold, with the revenues used to further promote transportation electrification and the purchase of more RECs, a virtuous cycle that helps make the program self sustaining.

Eating habits change only slightly after gestational diabetes diagnosis, NIH study suggests

0

BETHESDA, Md., May 20, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Pregnant women made only modest dietary changes after being diagnosed with gestational diabetes, according to a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health. Women with gestational diabetes are generally advised to reduce their carbohydrate intake, and the women in the study did cut their daily intake of juice and added sugars. They also increased their intake of cheese and artificially sweetened beverages. However, certain groups of women did not reduce their carbohydrate intake, including women with obesity, had more than one child, were Hispanic, had a high school degree or less, or were between the ages of 35-41 years.

The study was led by Stefanie N. Hinkle, Ph.D., of the Epidemiology Branch at NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). The study appears in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Patients with gestational (or pregnancy-related) diabetes have a higher risk of maternal high blood pressure, larger babies, cesarean delivery, low blood sugar in newborns, and development of chronic diabetes later in life.

“The improvements in diet that we observed were not equitable across all groups of women,” said Dr. Hinkle. “This research highlights the importance of creating individualized programs to ensure that all women with gestational diabetes are successful at modifying their diet and optimizing their health.”

The study team analyzed an existing set of data from the NICHD Fetal Growth Studies, which included surveys on diet and exercise from a diverse group of women at 12 hospital centers across the country. The analysis on diet included 1,371 women, of which 72 had gestational diabetes. The study team also examined exercise routines and that analysis included 1,875 women, of which 84 had gestational diabetes.

In the study, women with gestational diabetes limited their daily carbohydrate intake by 48 grams primarily by reducing their juice consumption by about 0.4 cups per day and reducing their added sugar consumption by about 3.2 teaspoons per day. Their consumption of cheese increased by 0.3 cups per day and artificially sweetened beverages increased by 0.2 cups per day.

In addition, the team found that women with gestational diabetes did not reduce their consumption of whole grains or whole fruit, nor did they compensate for their dietary changes by increasing saturated fats. The authors write that these observations are reassuring given that complex carbohydrates from whole grains or fruits may be beneficial for gestational diabetes, while saturated fats can worsen health outcomes by promoting excessive fetal growth.

The researchers also found that women with gestational diabetes maintained the same amount of time in moderate or vigorous exercises into their third trimester. However, women who did not have gestational diabetes reduced their moderate exercise activities during their third trimester by approximately 20 minutes per week and their vigorous exercise by approximately 9 minutes per week.

According to the study authors, the findings show that healthcare providers still have many opportunities to help women with gestational diabetes make greater gains and changes in diet and exercise. The authors called for more research to identify innovative approaches that are more effective in changing nutrition and exercise-related behaviors.

Los Angeles County Commends FDA’s Commitment to Ban Menthol Cigarettes Which Pose Greatest Risks to Black Communities, LGBTQ and Young Adults

0
Los Angeles County Public Health

LOS ANGELES, May 19, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) applauds the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) after it announced it is moving forward with proposed tobacco product standards within the next year to ban menthol in cigarettes, which have been heavily marketed in Black, LGBTQ, and young adult communities.

Los Angeles County Public Health

Studies have shown that people who smoke menthol cigarettes have a harder time quitting smoking than if they smoke traditional cigarettes. Menthol and other flavors in tobacco can encourage experimentation by youth and first-time smokers as the minty flavor reduces the harshness and irritation of tobacco on the throat. According to the 2018 California Student Tobacco Survey, high school students in LA County who reported smoking cigarettes regularly reported smoking menthol cigarettes.

For years the tobacco industry has intentionally targeted Black/African American, Latino/Latinx, LGBTQ, youth and low-income communities to increase sales of their addictive and deadly products. As part of the community-wide effort to stop these marketing tactics, faith-based organizations joined together to create “No Menthol Sunday.” This year’s event, entitled “A New Day” was scheduled for Sunday, May 16th, 2021 and featured faith organizations and churches addressing menthols’ harmful effects. The event also encouraged smokers to become tobacco-free by providing education and free/low-cost resources to help them on their journey to better health and quitting smoking.

Los Angeles County has always been a leader in tobacco control, having led the way in prohibiting the sale of all flavored tobacco products including menthol cigarettes in 2019,” said Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda L. Solis, Supervisor to the First District. “For far too long, Big Tobacco destroyed lives, dreams, and futures by shamelessly marketing their deadly products to our most vulnerable groups. To that end, we will continue to fight to ensure that every person’s life and health is valued and protected.”

The County’s 2019 ban on flavored tobacco products in unincorporated areas reached a one-year milestone this month with the enforcement period becoming effective back on May 1st, 2020. If the FDA ban on menthol cigarettes and all flavored cigars is implemented, regulations will be in place to prohibit all manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, importers, and retailers from distributing and selling menthol tobacco products.

“Public Health commends the FDA for taking this historic step toward curbing tobacco industry’s continuing efforts to allure new smokers to a highly addictive and deadly flavored product. The FDA’s actions will bring about meaningful public health gains and advance health equity by working towards reversing the health and financial damage tobacco addiction has caused to generations of people,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. “The work is far from done and we will continue to partner with community and faith-based organizations to help people quit smoking and help youth live tobacco free lives.”

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health recently launched a media and public education campaign focused on the dangers of menthol cigarettes. The campaign and ongoing efforts encourage people to call 1-800-NO-BUTTS (1-800-45-NO-FUME in Spanish) for free counseling and help to start a quit plan. People can also visit LAQuits.com/menthol for resources to help quit.

The Department of Public Health is committed to protecting and improving the health of over 10 million residents of Los Angeles County. Through a variety of programs, community partnerships and services, Public Health oversees environmental health, disease control, and community and family health. Nationally accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health comprises nearly 4,100 employees and has an annual budget of $1 billion. Taking it to the Street – Vaccinate4Love: Doctors’ Orders Awareness Campaign Featured on LinkNYC Kiosks Across New York City

Vaccinate4Love Awareness Campaign Featured on LinkNYC Kiosks Across New York City

NEW YORK, May 18, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — As full vaccination becomes the national key to going maskless, with hesitancy still rampant, “efforts to overcome vaccine hesitancy are taking on ever greater urgency,” say Dr. Jacqueline Jones and Davia Temin, co-founders of the grassroots public awareness campaign Vaccinate4Love: Doctors’ Orders.

Vaccinate4Love Awareness Campaign Featured on LinkNYC Kiosks Across New York City

Responding to this need, LinkNYC – the first-of-its-kind communications network providing free Wi-Fi, phone calls, device charging and access to social services – has partnered with Vaccinate4Love to spread the message on New York’s streets. Digital displays with messages encouraging “Don’t Hesitate – Vaccinate” are now featured on 1,800 kiosks throughout the greater New York City area. To date, vaccination rates for residents 18 and older vary dramatically by borough, ranging from 31% of adult residents in the Bronx fully vaccinated to 50% in Manhattan. Brooklyn has a 34% full vaccination rate among its residents, with Staten Island at 38% and Queens at 41%.

In addition to the LinkNYC partnership, Vaccinate4Love’s new strategic partners include Cision PR Newswire, Grand Central Partnership, New York Yankees, Transit Wireless, United Way, and many more. The @Vaccinate4Love campaign, launched in March, has spread nationally over Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn.

Vaccine hesitancy across the country has led to pessimistic predictions about full herd immunity for the U.S. this year, which most scientists estimate would need to reach 70-80% of the population. The Biden administration has set a goal to have 70% of the U.S. population receive at least one shot by July 4.

“We are proud to be able to use our screens to help Vaccinate4Love promote this important public message to communities across New York,” says Esther Raphael, CMO of Intersection, one of the companies behind the LinkNYC program.

Supporting the Vaccinate4Love campaign are a host of strategic partners, including:
