AUSTIN, Texas, April 22, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The median sales price of homes in Texas reached $274,300 in the first quarter this year, an increase of 13.4% over the same period last year, according to the 2021-Q1 Texas Quarterly Housing Report released today by Texas Realtors.

Texas Association of Realtors logo.

“The demand for housing in Texas remained strong despite the winter storm in February and the pandemic,” said Marvin Jolly, chairman of Texas Realtors. “With a low supply of homes for sale, though, prices in most areas have gone up significantly, and competition among buyers has increased as well.”

During the first quarter of this year, 84,464 homes were sold in Texas, jumping 10.1% compared to the first quarter of 2020. One-third of homes sold were in the $200,000$299,000 price range, the largest percentage of any price range.

Luis Torres, Ph.D., research economist with the Texas Real Estate Research Center at Texas A&M University, commented, “Depleted inventory is the greatest challenge to Texas’ housing market, pushing up prices at elevated rates as demand remains strong, making it one of the most competitive housing markets for homebuyers since the 2006-07 housing boom. Rising mortgage rates in 2021 combined with recent rapid price growth will slow demand and, consequently, price growth to more sustainable levels.”

Active listings declined 53% from last year and stood at 43,542 homes for sale at the end of the first quarter of 2021. Homes spent an average of 47 days on the market before going under contract, which is 20 days less than the first quarter of 2020. The average total time from hitting the market until the sale closed was 87 days, down 13 days from the previous year. Housing supply in Texas decreased from 3 months in the first quarter of 2020 to 1.3 months of inventory in the first quarter this year.

Chairman Jolly concluded, “Many homes are attracting multiple offers and selling for thousands above asking price. Price plays a key role in winning offers, of course, but other considerations can come into play as well. Realtors have been helping their buyers and sellers sort through their options to help them achieve their real estate goals during a market that presents some unique challenges.”

QUEENSBORO FC HAS A PLACE TO CALL HOME. YORK COLLEGE OF THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK ANNOUNCED AS SITE FOR CLUB’S SOCCER SPECIFIC STADIUM, THE FIRST EVER BUILT BY A PRO TEAM IN NEW YORK CITY.

NEW YORK, April 27, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Queensboro FC (QBFC), an expansion club of the United Soccer League (USL), announced today that York College of The City University of New York (CUNY) will be the site of its home games for the inaugural season in Spring 2022. This will be the first ever purpose-built stadium, specifically designed for soccer, by any professional sports team in New York City. The announcement has been a long time coming for many fans, who have been highly anticipating the news and are eager to welcome a home soccer team to Queens. Soccer is the #1 sport across the 150+ nationalities which make up the borough, and you can witness that passion every weekend when thousands of players gather at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, an iconic Queen’s destination for local amateur soccer teams and their families. With QBFC, New York’s vast immigrant community finally has a local pro team to call their own. With the stadium, they can truly say it’s their ‘home away from home’.

QUEENSBORO FC HAS A PLACE TO CALL HOME. YORK COLLEGE OF THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK ANNOUNCED AS SITE FOR CLUB’S SOCCER SPECIFIC STADIUM, THE FIRST EVER BUILT BY A PRO TEAM IN NEW YORK CITY.

Pursuant to a Summer 2020 Request for Proposals, CUNY awarded QBFC the contract to construct and operate a stadium on the York College campus to support the university’s academic and athletic mission, as well as enhance the college experience for its students, create local jobs, grow neighborhood businesses, and develop the surrounding area of Jamaica, Queens. In addition to hosting QBFC practices and competition play, the stadium will also serve as the venue for York College’s commencement, CUNY Athletic Conference tournament games, and other free or ticketed events. Throughout the duration of the partnership, there will be ongoing exchange between university and club, such as the joint development of class curriculum on topics surrounding health, wellness, and sports education, as well as the integration of QBFC front office, coaches, and players as guest speakers. There will also be community initiatives hosted by QBFC and York College, especially related to youth and student development in the form of seminars, clinics, and internships.

Staying true to the club’s vision to deliver an innovative and unique fan experience, the 7,500-seat modular stadium will be designed in partnership with Populous, a leading global architecture firm that has created some of the world’s best sporting facilities. Special attention has been made to ensure the stadium adheres to the highest standards and best practices of a post-COVID era, with frictionless commerce along with other health, safety, and sanitation protocols. The pitch will be a turf playing surface, which will allow the venue to be a year-round asset for sports, entertainment and community events.

To celebrate this announcement, QBFC has launched The 1909 Club for its fans, named in honor of the Queensborough Bridge, which opened in 1909 and is an integral part of QBFC’s crest design. To officially kick-off ticket sales for the 2022 inaugural season, QBFC is offering a limited-time promotion for the first 1,909 people to place a deposit, which grants lifelong membership in the 1909 Club. Fans can place a $25 deposit for the first-rights opportunity to purchase season tickets, up to six seats and choose their seat location in the new stadium. The deposit will apply as a credit towards the total cost of their season ticket plan. Seat selections are made in the order of deposit placement, therefore the club encourages fans to place their orders early by visiting the Queensboro FC website.

“Today is an exciting day for Queensboro FC. The announcement of our home stadium site at York College represents a bold new chapter for professional sports in New York City,” says Jonathan Krane, Owner of Queensboro FC.  “More importantly, we are proud to deliver our QBFC fans a dedicated soccer specific venue, built by and for the Queens community, bringing us all together to celebrate the beautiful game.”

“The City University of New York is proud to partner with Queensboro FC in bringing a professional soccer stadium to York College in Queens, a place world-renowned for its cultural and linguistic diversity, and for its love of el fútbol,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “This new stadium is a great addition to the York College campus and will benefit not only CUNY students and the local community, but all New Yorkers and fans of soccer.”

York College is honored to be the host site for Queensboro FC’s home stadium,” says Berenecea Johnson Eanes, President of York College. “We believe their contributions as a community-led sporting organization will greatly advance our facilities, our campus experience, and our neighborhoods. This project will showcase the importance of private and public sectors coming together, and working together, to celebrate diversity and bridge communities.”

“Sports bring people together from all walks of life, to create shared experiences in support of a common cause, and soccer is a passion point that connects New Yorkers with one another,” said Congressman Gregory Meeks (NY-05). “Queensboro FC’s stadium at York College will bring sustainable, multi-generational benefits to the community, and we believe the club will continue to work hard for the people of Queens.  We are proud to have QBFC as the newest professional sports team in New York City.”

Queens is the home for sports. From baseball to tennis, and now we are proud to add soccer to the mix. I am thrilled Queensboro FC will have York College to call home, and can’t wait for Queens families to enjoy soccer games once the stadium is completed. Thank you to CUNY, my fellow elected officials and all the partners for making this happen. Can’t wait to cheer on our soccer stars here in the World’s Borough!” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Jr.

“In 2022, Queens will be the epicenter of something positive, fútbol. For a long time, Queens has been the soccer mecca for so many of our communities, taking their passion for this sport to our local spaces like Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Now our very own Queens team, QBFC, will have a home at York College for soccer fans to enjoy their favorite pastime without leaving the borough. Thank you to CUNY and York College for making this stadium a reality. I look forward to joining futbol fans like me to cheer on our Queens team and soccer players,” said NYC Council Member Francisco Moya.

“The soccer community in Queens is finally getting what they’ve always wanted – their own team and their own stadium,” says Aly Wagner, former US Women’s National Team star and currently part of Queensboro FC ownership group. “We have worked really hard over the past two years to bring QBFC to life, and this stadium represents a huge step forward. It will serve as a physical manifestation, and a leading example, of how to build a modern-day soccer team in an ever-changing world of sports and entertainment.”

Carlos Ríos Otero’s new book ¿Mercenario o Internacionalista…?, a gripping tale of political, economic, and government conflict and upheaval in the Cuban motherland

MIAMI, April 27, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The book ¿Mercenario o Internacionalista…? was created by Carlos Ríos Otero. Carlos  is an author who was born in 1949 in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. He is a sugar economics consultant who also served in the military in Angola. In 1990 he joined the human rights movement, and since 2015 he lives in the Cuban diaspora.

Carlos Ríos Otero said this about his book: “Angola 1975–1991 (MMCA)—imperfect chapter of the Cuban revolution. Generals from the Ministry of War receive orders from the leaders in genuflection status to Russia. It is such that in the course of this odyssey they are nicknamed “Karamazov brothers,” alluding to the peak of Russian literature. Villages razed in conflict zones.

Liborio bears the worst part—9,000 fallen, 11,000 mutilated, 37,000 enter with calvaries (STDs, HIV-AIDS, malaria). A total of 377,000 legionaries were notified. Ships enter precious wood for the controls bunker. The Karamazovs get their share; they received at least ten billion dollars. They found a pyramid base—state capitalism, managed today by GAESA.

Trace this fascinating story, LQQD: we flourished mercenaries for nothing.”

Pritzker, the Illinois Public Health Association (IPHA), in partnership with the Illinois Primary Health Care Association (IPHCA), today announced that the COVID-19 Pandemic Health Navigator Program (PHNP) is now live and Community Health Workers are available to help residents throughout the state of Illinois. The new program integrates community health centers, community-based organizations, and public health partners to coordinate Illinois resources for the most vulnerable populations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Illinois is well above the national average for getting first doses out to our residents, but making vaccines available is only half the battle,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “I’m proud to announce our Pandemic Health Navigator Program is already hard at work building confidence among our unvaccinated residents, educating them on what COVID-19 is, what the vaccine can do for them, and how they can protect themselves and their families. These are local community organizations who know their peers, their students, their colleagues – people who speak their languages and know their neighborhoods. In short, our Pandemic Health Navigators are a crucial part of keeping our most vulnerable residents safe, and I’m so grateful to all of them.”

“As we look toward recovering from the health, social and economic hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognize the importance of providing Illinois residents with education, resources and guidance from people they trust,” said Dr. Tracey Smith, Director of Programs and Community Health. “We’re proud to be leading a network of Community Health Workers that are already making an impact by connecting vulnerable populations with vital education and resources – like access to food and health services – that are positioning these communities to move forward, stronger.”

In 2021, PHNP began efforts to equip community-based organizations (CBOs) and federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) with funding, training and resources to provide local support to Illinois residents.

To date, 65 CBOs and 23 FQHCs are participating in the program. These partnerships have helped hire more than 400 Community Health Workers and regional supervisors, with the goal to hire hundreds more in the next three months. The program has received more than 1,270 requests for resources and has a 96 percent completion rate for resource requests within 48 hours.

To better understand the views and needs of Illinois communities during the pandemic, IPHA and IPHCA recently conducted a survey of more than 800 residents. The survey results showed that Illinois residents are in need of guidance and underscored the importance of sharing accurate information and dispelling common misconceptions.  The survey revealed the following data:

  • 1 in 5 indicated they were not able or unsure of their ability to tell the difference between scientific facts and misinformation or false claims on the Internet.
  •  21 percent said they would not get the COVID-19 vaccine, 71 percent said they were willing to get the vaccine, and seven percent opted not to answer the question.
  • More than half (57%) of respondents stated they would be open to working with a Community Health Worker.

“This program is an important resource to support the healthcare needs of our communities, especially diverse communities that have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Cyrus Winnett, Interim President and CEO, IPHCA. “By leveraging local health departments, community health centers and community-based organizations, we’re providing on-the-ground, trusted support to ensure Illinoisans receive the health education, outreach, and resources they need to be healthy and safe.”

“Healthcare providers have been on the front lines in the fight against COVID-19 from day one,” said Linnea Windel, President and CEO of VNA Health Care. “The Pandemic Health Navigator Program will provide us with additional tools, resources and Community Health Workers to support our fight against this virus and help our patients and larger community get through this together.”

The IPHA, in partnership with the IPHCA, was awarded a grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to serve as the Regional Coordinator for regions 2-9 of the PHNP to ensure coverage for these activities through direct services and/or sub-awarding to Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and other community-based agencies.

IPHA and IPHCA will sub-contract with FQHCs and community-based agencies in Illinois COVID-19 regions 2-9 to recruit the navigators for local COVID-19 education and outreach, to support contact tracing as needed, and to connect cases and contacts with critical services and resources. This may include resources for meals, medicine, mobility support, immigration matters, work and income resources, mental health support, support for unsafe living conditions (e.g. domestic abuse), etc., during isolation and quarantine. In addition, the PHNP team will collaborate and coordinate across the assigned regions with the public health system, including with local health departments (LHDs), to support contact tracing efforts and ensure all communities receive needed assistance and to help reduce disparities in health outcomes.

About the Illinois Primary Health Care Association
IPHCA represents Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) or community health centers—entities created by Congress to meet the health care needs of underserved communities and high-risk patients. These centers fill a void by providing care for those whom other providers often do not serve. Since FQHCs must, by law, serve the medically underserved regardless of their ability to pay, CHCs are located in geographic regions designated as having a shortage of medical providers who serve this population. In addition, the medically underserved may be low-income, uninsured, homeless, affected by HIV/AIDS, struggling with substance abuse and/or have special needs. IPHCA is committed to fulfilling its mission of helping communities help themselves by advocating and expanding community primary care services across Illinois, and assisting member organizations in fulfilling their goal of community empowerment through health care choice. By advocating on behalf of members’ interests, IPHCA also advocates for underserved citizens and communities. For more information visit https://www.iphca.org.

In a video released today, Honda showcases a new interior design philosophy that will shape the interior design of future Honda models. Johnathan Norman, Creative Lead for Honda Interior Design in the U.S., provides insight into the new philosophy behind the interior design direction.

Inspired by the classic human-centered designs of early Honda vehicles, the brand’s new simplicity and “something” philosophy helps enhance the driving experience by eliminating complexity and advancing the user experience through thoughtful and pleasing design elements. The new design philosophy features a renewed focus on Honda’s classic “Man Maximum/Machine Minimum” approach that maximizes cabin space, while minimizing space required for mechanical components.

“Simplicity in design requires not only a strong philosophy, but a discipline toward the user experience,” said Norman. “We’ve heard from designers working for other brands who say they were inspired by the simple, human-centered design of old Hondas. Well, so are we!”

For Honda, this means interior design is about the people inside the vehicle, leading to interiors free of visual clutter with a focus on thin pillars, a low cowl and a large greenhouse for excellent visibility, enabling the driver and occupants to see the road and the environment around them.

The “and something” is the personality and character of the design meant to invoke a positive emotional response from the driver and passengers, expressed through design details such as the careful knurling of a knob or charm of a material.

Norman notes the “simplicity” philosophy will be the design language of Honda, while the “and something” is the personality and appeal unique to each model.  “We are pursuing this design language with the new Hondas we’re designing in the studio now,” he said. “It’s our ‘simple’ approach to design with the ‘and something’ that will help differentiate each product and make your future Honda vehicles something you want to drive and are excited to use.”
