Aurora, Colorado, creates 10-year Immigrant Integration Plan to build on its successes with diverse communities

0

AURORA, Coloroda, Dec. 2, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Building on its successful work to develop opportunities for immigrants and refugees and expand the city’s international presence, the city of Aurora has unveiled a 10-year Immigrant Integration Plan, Aurora is open to the world.”

As Colorado’s third-largest city and one of the most diverse large cities in the United States, Aurora created one of the nation’s first municipal strategic plans for immigrant integration in 2015 and remains the only Colorado city with a comprehensive strategic plan for immigrant integration. Aurora is updating that plan for the decade ahead based on what the city has learned so far and what residents and stakeholder groups have cited as priorities. The effort is led by the city’s Office of International and Immigrant Affairs.

“One in five Aurora residents was born outside the U.S., and we believe that the success of our residents, and therefore the success of our city, depends on how well we can work together,” said Ricardo Gambetta, head of Aurora’s Office of International and Immigrant Affairs. “Moving forward, our plan for 2020 to 2030 focuses on goals that capture community needs, with specific ideas for implementation.”

Among the 12 goal areas for 2020 to 2030 are entrepreneurism, affordable housing, job skills and certification, English language learning, language accessibility, public safety relationships, immigrant leadership, healthy lifestyles, citizenship pathways, and cultural inclusion. These goals build on the areas of focus in the 2015 strategic plan.

Some of the successes seen under the city’s first strategic plan on immigrant integration include:

  • Development of the award-winning Natural Helpers Program, which has trained more than 150 immigrants from 25 countries to be leaders in their communities and liaisons with local resources.
  • Formation of Aurora’s Immigrant and Refugee Commission, a group of residents to advise City Council on immigrant issues.
  • Expansion of English and citizenship classes with local partner agencies.
  • Creation of small-business grants and loans for immigrant entrepreneurs, resulting in the creation of 143 jobs.
  • Sponsorship of international trips and hosting of international delegations to promote business, cultural and political exchanges, resulting in the opening of a Salvadoran Consulate, the first consular office in Colorado outside of Denver.
  • Growth of health, cultural, arts and sports programs to build community cohesiveness, including Global Fest, Aurora’s flagship event for celebrating diversity, attracting 10,000 people a year.

“The partnerships we have created, the trust we have built, the ideas we have sparked – all of this requires our continued support and nurturing so we can be a city that helps all our residents dream big and achieve even more,” said Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman. “This updated strategic plan for the next 10 years sets the groundwork for how we will be an international business and cultural destination, a welcoming melting pot of people and experiences, and a city of opportunity for residents of all backgrounds.”

Montefiore and Einstein Awarded $15 Million Federal Grant to Support the Bond between Fathers and Children

Traci Maynigo, Psy.D., program director, Supporting Healthy Relationships and Supporting Responsible Fatherhood

BRONX, N.Y., Dec. 2, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The stress of COVID-19, quarantine and social distancing has tested many relationships. It has been especially challenging for parents whose children aren’t under the same roof.

Traci Maynigo, Psy.D., program director, Supporting Healthy Relationships and Supporting Responsible Fatherhood

A $15 million grant from the United States Department of Health and Human Services will enable University Behavioral Associates at Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine to create new programs to strengthen relationships between fathers and children who live apart. It will also fund Montefiore and Einstein’s existing Supporting Healthy Relationships program for couples with kids.

“Our relationship education programs teach practical skills that can be applied to any relationship,” said Scott Wetzler, Ph.D., professor and vice chair, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Montefiore and Einstein. “Unlike therapy, which focuses on longer-term behavioral changes, we concentrate on specific skills that can be learned, practiced, and mastered so people don’t feel stuck or make the same mistakes – they can break the cycle.”

Courses in the new Supporting Responsible Fatherhood program teach dads how to effectively co-parent and the best ways to support their children emotionally and financially. These skills are especially important during COVID-19 when families who live apart may spend less time together.

Montefiore and Einstein are also partnering with BronxWorks, a non-profit that works to improve economic and social well-being, to offer workshops that help fathers find and keep jobs. Data on family finances, relationship satisfaction, and skills learned by participants will be collected for research aiming to improve these metrics and test the value of virtual classes.

Montefiore and Einstein’s Supporting Healthy Relationships will continue its 14-year run of classes that focus on healthy communication, conflict resolution, and building trust for couples.

“Our workshops are like date nights—they are a rare opportunity to bond with other couples over the challenges we share in our relationships,” said Traci Maynigo, Psy.D., program director, Supporting Healthy Relationships and Supporting Responsible Fatherhood. “With social distancing and fewer in-person events with friends, our goal is to remind couples to, above all, value one another.”

Norberto Valdes’s new book Mas Allá del Llanto y del Dolor, a compelling account that instills philosophical insights on vindicating optimism amid trying times

0
Norberto-Valdes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Dec. 2, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The book Mas Allá del Llanto y del Dolor was created by Norberto Valdes. Norberto Valdes is an author and gang member from Torreón Coahuila, Mexico, with a passion was always literature, poetry, and especially philosophy.

Norberto said this about his book: “Given our apocalyptic times, it is difficult to maintain an optimistic position on life and the human condition. The real possibility of a nuclear holocaust, global warming, the unequaled economic growth, organized crime and cartels, especially Mexicans, mass murders, parricide, matricide, filicide, fratricide, incest of children and girls as well as baby abandonment make optimism almost impossible.

“If we ask the optimist the reason for his position, he will most likely shrug his shoulders and, ashamed, answer, ‘I don’t know.’ We live at the epicenter of nihilism prophesied in the nineteenth century as a consequence of the loss of faith in God. Humanity has been plunged into constant, endless wars, of all against all, and the toxic specter of racism plagues humanity once again. Is optimism still possible? This book is my answer to the question of why I am still optimistic.”

Published by Page Publishing, Norberto Valdes’s new book Mas Allá del Llanto y del Dolor will illuminate the readers with sagacious perspectives that delve into the idea of optimism during tragedy and toil.

Consumers who wish to understand the core of optimism despite the capriciousness of life can purchase Mas Allá del Llanto y del Dolor in any bookstore or online at Apple iTunes, Amazon.com, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

Luis Enrique Pedraza’s new book Cuando el Karma Te Alcance, a riveting tale of a boy and his evoking journey in life that defined his destiny and purpose

Luis-Enrique-Pedraza

SPRING, Texas, Dec. 2, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The book Cuando el Karma Te Alcance was created by Luis Enrique Pedraza. Luis is an author who was born in the state of Colima, Mexico. He emigrated to California and worked in general duties and the Union of Operators OE3, where he currently works.

Luis said this about his book: “This is a story about a boy, a Mexican American who lived the causes of karma firsthand. It shows that the land where you are is a land of opportunities if you know how to take advantage of them. The life you lead, the things you do in the long run are what will define your destiny—that is, the consequences—because every action has a reaction and everything you do against or for others, one day, it will be returned to you in triplicate. If things go wrong, reflect, look at your past. You will have done something wrong against someone, and you will have to suffer the consequences. If you’re doing well, it’s because your actions have brought you good things. We all go through life, sometimes doing harm to others, taking advantage of their ignorance or their condition. And when we have to suffer the result of our actions, we cry out to God, asking, ‘Why me?’ We envy the life that some people lead who do not care about destiny. Always do good, always help others, always listen to those who seek them for help or advice. You will find all this and more in this story made to be enjoyed.”

Published by Page Publishing, Luis Enrique Pedraza’s new book Cuando el Karma Te Alcance shows the uncertainty of a young boy’s life, manifesting through karma and shaping his life for better or worse.

Consumers who wish to understand the whims of karma through a boy’s eventful moments in life can purchase Cuando el Karma Te Alcance in any bookstore or online at Apple iTunes, Amazon.com, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

The Home Depot Expands Skilled Trades Initiative with “Path to Pro” Program

The Home Depot logo. (PRNewsFoto/The Home Depot) (PRNewsFoto/)

ATLANTA, Dec. 1, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Home Depot® announced today that it is expanding on The Home Depot Foundation’s $50 million trades training commitment announced in 2018 with a new education and job placement program called Path to Pro. The program aims to address the skilled labor gap by educating more people in the skilled trades, connecting skilled tradespeople with jobs and careers, and generating interest in trade professions through educational campaigns.

The Home Depot logo. (PRNewsFoto/The Home Depot) (PRNewsFoto/)

Eighty-three percent of contractors still have trouble finding skilled workers, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Construction Index, and at any given time, there are about 300,000 skilled labor job openings*.

The Home Depot is investing in training from entry-level to advanced certifications. The company recently sponsored its first weeklong boot camp to teach essential industry skills like job site safety, tool usage, material handling as well as communication and professional skills. The boot camp is piloting in the Atlanta area and is planned to expand into additional markets next year. Graduates earn a Home Depot certificate that recognizes construction skills and professional fundamentals.

Additionally, the company will launch a first-of-its-kind website early next year to allow people to search local training programs, licensing requirements and open jobs in the trades – all in one centralized resource. The site features reliable day-in-the-life videos and stories for each trade, projected industry growth, salary information in industries like electrical, carpentry, plumbing and HVAC.

The Home Depot will also introduce a new, proprietary online platform to increase access to networking between skilled tradespeople and the company’s Pro customers. Training program graduates can showcase their work portfolio, experience and additional qualifications, and be contacted by Pros in their area looking for skilled labor hires.

In 2018, The Home Depot Foundation launched its trades training mission to help fill the skilled labor gap through programs in high schools, career academies and military bases nationwide. The Foundation works with Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA) and Home Builders Institute (HBI) to provide skilled training courses at the K-12 level in schools across the country. In partnership with HBI and 10 military bases, separating service members will be trained and certified, helping them launch their next career. The Home Depot is also the trades industry sponsor for the Center for Workforce Innovation at Atlanta Technical College (ATC) which is providing real skills to help students attain economic mobility in the trades.

The Foundation’s trades-focused partnerships have exposed more than 15,000 people to the skilled trades and have certified 3,600 participants in its first two years. With the company’s expanded efforts, people will have even more resources and training to pursue and grow their careers in the trades from start to finish.
