With another month of sales near 30,000 units, Civic maintained its grip on the compact car segment, even as new or renewed competitors come to market. Honda trucks and electrified vehicles also exhibited sales strength in June.

  • CR-V and Civic continued to lead Honda sales, with CR-V topping 30,000 units and Civic nearly reaching the same benchmark.
  • Pilot also posted a strong month on sales of 11,579 units, Ridgeline gained 5% on sales of 2,761 units, 3,385 Passports were delivered, and Odyssey led all minivans on sales of 9,202.

Northwestern Medicine Launches Hispanic Brain and Spine Tumor Program

0

CHICAGO, July 2, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Northwestern Memorial Hospital recently launched the Northwestern Medicine Hispanic Brain and Spine Tumor Program in Chicago to make life-saving neurological care more accessible for the Hispanic and Latino population by removing cultural, linguistic barriers to patients who speak Spanish. Led by neurosurgeon and Mexico City native Dr. Adam Sonabend, the program aims to provide patients with brain and spinal tumors and their family members personalized care in Spanish from diagnosis to treatment.

“As a diverse city with two dominant air transportation hubs in Chicago, I was compelled to start a program that accommodates the Hispanic community and provides world-class care for patients with brain and spinal tumors from all over the world,” said Adam Sonabend, MD, neurosurgeon and director of the Hispanic Brain and Spine Tumor Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “With this program, patients will be able to pick up the phone to schedule an appointment in Spanish, understand their diagnosis and treatment options, and undergo treatment and surgery including brain mapping for language in the operating room in Spanish. They also receive care by a clinician in Spanish at all follow-up appointments and while recovering at the hospital.”

Along with Dr. Sonabend, the multidisciplinary team includes Jean-Paul Wolinsky, MD, a neurosurgical expert in spine tumors, Roger Stupp, MD, a world-renowned neuro-oncologist who treats patients with brain and spine tumors, and an expert neuro-oncologist Priya Kumthekar MD. The program also includes Spanish speaking nurses, medical assistants and phone operators.

Guillermo Muñoz understands first-hand the significance the Hispanic Brain and Spine Tumor Program has had on his life. Born in Santiago, Chile and now living in Chicago, Muñoz was getting ready to conduct the Christmas Eve church service in Chicago when he started experiencing an unsurmountable headache that wouldn’t go away causing him to become nauseous. Concerned with the headache, Muñoz decided to call Northwestern Memorial. An avid marathon runner who follows a vegan diet, Muñoz wasn’t sure why he was feeling sick especially since he hadn’t experienced a headache of this magnitude before.

Muñoz called Northwestern Memorial where he was advised to get MRI scans which showed a plum sized tumor in the back of his brain which was compressed on his brainstem and needed to be removed. These images alerted doctors to send Muñoz to the emergency room right away for more testing.

Less than 24 hours later, on Christmas Day, Muñoz had to cancel his plans to fly to Chile to visit his family for the holidays and instead was wheeled into the operating room where Dr. Sonabend spent hours removing the tumor from Muñoz’s brain.

After surgery, Muñoz spent the next two weeks in the hospital recovering and then was transferred to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, a few blocks from Northwestern Memorial, where he began the process of recovering.

“I count my lucky stars that I was under the care of Dr. Sonabend and I was able to communicate to him in Spanish,” said Muñoz. “This allowed me to be able to connect with him under his care and I was able to learn the proper medical terminology for my condition so that I could accurately share the information with my family in the U.S. and Chile.”

The program also provides one-on-one support with a care team member who will help assist in travel plans, airfare, hotel accommodations, banking services and connecting the patient and family with places of worship, if desired.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, fill out the form here and a member of our staff will contact you directly. For immediate assistance, please call 312.926.3576.

Texas small land sales volume, median price increase in 2018; total dollar volume tops $1 billion for second straight year

0
Texas Association of Realtors logo.

AUSTIN, Texas, July 2, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Texas small land sales volume and median price experienced strong gains in 2018, while total dollar volume topped $1 billion for the second year in a row, according to the 2019 edition of the Texas Small Land Sales Report released today by Texas Realtors.

Texas Association of Realtors logo.

“The demand for Texas land continues to increase due to strong population and economic growth,” said Tray Bates, chairman of Texas Realtors. “Development and prime land investment opportunities remained a steady force, increasing the price per acre and impacting the quality of land available. Overall small land sales in 2018 experienced strong growth, particularly in West Texas due to a surge in oil and gas production and in the Gulf Coast area due to recovery activity from Hurricane Harvey.”

The report found that the number of small land sales grew in many regions. Small land sales in West Texas, Gulf Coast-Brazos Bottom and Austin/Waco/Hill Country all experienced double-digit percentage gains in 2018. Conversely, small land sales volume in the Panhandle and South Plains, Northeast Texas and South Texas regions all experienced declines.

The definition of a “small” land sale varies by region but is generally a land sale of 200 acres or less. The exception is Far West Texas, where 500 to 8,000 acres qualifies as a small land sale.

For the sixth straight year, Texas recorded a statewide increase in small land sales volume, with sales increasing 5.9% annually to 8,036 tracts sold. The average price per acre grew 5.13% year-over-year to $5,804 an acre. For the second year in a row, total dollar volume topped $1 billion for a total of $1,146,758,167.

Charles Gilliland, Ph.D., economist with the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University, commented, “Statewide, smaller properties are growing in popularity with many being purchased as an expansion of a larger property, especially in sub-markets right outside of the large metro areas. With housing prices increasing statewide, there is demand for more subdivision developments, and, thus, more tracts are being purchased for pre-development.”

The report also revealed the average tract size for small land sales in Texas decreased 8.3% to 33 acres. The Panhandle and South Plains, and the Gulf Coast-Brazos Bottom were the only regions that experienced increases in average tract size, growing 29% and 5.5%, respectively.

Bates concluded, “The Texas small land sales market remains a competitive sector of Texas real estate. More and more investors are choosing Texas to make small land purchases due to our friendly business environment, booming economy and wealth of land opportunities. We expect investments in small land for subdivisions or mixed developments will continue, spurring more economic growth across the state as well as attracting more investors.”

Olympusat Restored Classic Screened at Salon Mexico: The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema

0
New_Olympus_Logo

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida, July 2, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Olympusat, Inc., the TV and media industry leader specializing in Spanish-language TV networks is pleased to announce that one of its digitally remastered classic Mexican films, Víctimas del pecado (Victims of Sin), will be screened on Tuesday July 02 as part of Salon Mexico: The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema program presented by the British Film Institute.

Masterfully directed by Emilio Fernández, who won the 1946 Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix award for Maria Candelaria, and flawlessly photographed like a classic film noir by Gabriel Figueroa, Víctimas del pecado (1951) is a sparkling example of the rumberas genre of films popular at the time—typically set in a cabaret and featuring Afro-Caribbean music. Ninón Sevilla delivers a kinetic performance as Violeta, a rhumba dancer at a red-light district nightclub in Mexico City who finds an infant in a garbage can and decides to raise him as her own.  But when club owner Rodolfo (Rodolfo Acosta) learns about the child, a clash between him, Violeta and her lover Santiago (Tito Junco) ensues, ultimately ending in tragedy for all three.

Salon Mexico: The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema pays homage to the three and a half decades of prolific film production by what many consider to be the epicenter of Latin American cinema between 1933 and 1964. It was during this time that the Mexican industry gained international recognition based on the quality of its cinematic offering as well as the speed at which it could deliver reels of film to theater. In fact, it was not unheard of the Mexican studio system to produce over 100 films per year during the 1950s employing a sophisticated system of studios, talented directors and actors.

Sadly, many of these cultural gemstones are rapidly being lost to the ravages of time. Celluloid, when not properly stored, deteriorates due to environmental conditions and will rust, fade and ultimately disintegrate.  Thankfully, Olympusat is fighting to preserve these historical works as quickly as possible by painstakingly restoring them frame by frame to their original splendor. Olympusat has over fifty professionals dedicated to fixing and preserving the catalog of classic Mexican cinema. To date, the company has restored and digitally transferred over 300 films for posterity to enjoy.

Meyer Shank Racing Takes Acura NSX GT3 Evo to Victory at Watkins Glen

Trent Hindman, Mario Farnbacher and Justin Marks combined to take their MSR Acura NSX GT3 Evo to victory today at Watkins Glen International Raceway.

WATKINS GLEN, New York, June 30, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Acura Motorsports continued its run of mid-season wins and podiums today at Watkins Glen International Raceway, with Meyer Shank Racing taking its Acura NSX GT3 Evo to the GTD class win in the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen, while Acura Team Penske added another podium finish with a third-place overall result for the Acura ARX-05 prototype.

Trent Hindman, Mario Farnbacher and Justin Marks combined to take their MSR Acura NSX GT3 Evo to victory today at Watkins Glen International Raceway.

Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo
Starting from the GTD class pole, Trent Hindman and co-drivers Mario Farnbacher and Justin Marks remained in the thick of the GTD battle throughout the six-hour contest.  During the final round of pit stops, the MSR team elected to have Mario “double-stint” his tires to the finish.  The move enabled Farnbacher to beat most of his competitors out of the pits for the final time, but he would have to fight competitors with fresher, quicker tires under them for the final 40 minutes of the race.

Farnbacher was successful in his defense of the lead, and scored his first IMSA GTD win of 2019 and second career win.  For regular co-driver Hindman, this was his first GTD win, to go with two poles, increased their lead in the drivers’ championship to an unofficial 16 points over Townsend Bell and Frank Montecalvo.  For endurance racing specialist Marks, today’s win is the ninth in his long career, dating back to 2001.

In the second MSR Acura, Christina Nielsen and co-drivers Katherine Legge and Bia Figueiredo led the GTD class multiple times, and remained in contention for the class win through the final pit stop.  Electing to install two new tires for the final run to the checkers, Legge was able to move from eighth to fifth.

Acura Team Penske ARX-05
In prototype, the final laps boiled down to a fight for the win featuring Juan Pablo Montoya’s Acura ARX-05 and the Mazda Team Joest trio of Jonathan Bomarito, Oliver Pla and Harry Tincknell

As in GTD, today’s prototype endurance contest at Watkins Glen came down to the final 40 minutes, with Montoya taking a “short fill” – less than a full fuel load – to gain the lead with just over one hour remaining.  After a frequent side-by-side battle for several laps, Tincknell executed a forceful pass on Montoya and extended his lead through the final laps to the checkers. However, Montoya and regular co-driver Dane Cameron remained in the thick of the championship after six of 10 races by virtue of their third consecutive finish on the podium.

Driving the #7 sister ARX-05, starting driver Ricky Taylor and co-driver Helio Castroneves started and finished fifth, results that belied the intensity of the contest at the front of the prototype field throughout the race.

Quotes
Mario Farnbacher (#86 Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3) started first, finished first, his first IMSA GTD win of 2019 and second career victory, leads the GTD drivers’ championship by 16 points with co-driver Trent Hindman: “We double-stinted the tires at the end [did not put on a fresh set of racing tires during the final spit stop so that the team could gain positions]. Bill [Auberlen] was pushing like crazy [for the class win].  It was really hard work for the team, so I’m really happy.”

Juan Pablo Montoya (#6 Acura Team Penske ARX-05 prototype) started third, finished third: “Honestly, apart from where we [had to save fuel] there at the end and made some contact [in the closing laps], everything was pretty smooth.  The Mazdas have been really fast for some time now, they just haven’t been able to complete a race.  For us, it was another solid result, and good for the championship.  That’s exactly what we need to be doing right now.”

Katherine Legge (#57 Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo) started second in GTD, finished fourth:  “I am slightly disappointed [to finish fourth]. We have great handling, and overall the car is really strong, but we don’t have any pace at the end of the straights. We are fast but it is a struggle to pass, causing us to lose track position. The car was a top-two car today but we just couldn’t get it done. I am looking forward to next weekend and hopefully, we can get a better result.”

Allen Miller (HPD Race Team Principal): on today’s GTD race win and DPi podium result for Acura Motorsports: “”On a day which began with Honda’s first Formula One race victory since 2006, congratulations to the Meyer Shank Racing team for winning from the pole today at Watkins Glen, and extending its points lead in the GTD drivers’ championship. In DPi, Acura Team Penske extended its streak of podium finishes with an excellent recovery from its mandated pit-lane start for the #6 Acura, and a determined third-place effort against strong competition from Mazda. Congratulations and thanks to all the associates at HPD for their efforts to put us in this position.”

CAPA: Mothers Rally To Stop Wiener’s 4 A.M. Bar Bill At Calif. State Assemblymember Blanca Rubio’s District Office

California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA); AlcoholPolicyAlliance.org

LOS ANGELES, June 30, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Members of California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA) will hold an opposition rally at the West Covina district office of California State Assemblymember Blanca Rubio on Monday morning July 1, 2019 at 10 a.m.

California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA); AlcoholPolicyAlliance.org

The community is concerned because Assemblymember Santiago has received over $47,000 in campaign contributions from the alcohol and hospitality industries from companies including Anheuser-Busch InBev, California Beer & Beverage Distributors, Diageo, MillerCoors, and California Hotel and Lodging Association. The community believes public health and safety is being compromised by the influence of this money. The community stands in opposition to state bill SB 58, Senator Wiener’s third attempt in three years to disrupt the protections of a statewide uniform last call by giving 10 cities, in a so-called “pilot program,” the ability to extend hours of alcohol sales in bars, restaurants and clubs. This is not a benefit to community; this is a benefit to private and corporate interests.

In 2018, Blanca Rubio voted to pass a nearly identical version of the bill – Senator Wiener’s SB 905 — which Governor Brown vetoed, saying “I believe we have enough mischief from midnight to 2 without adding two more hours of mayhem.”  The rally is a call to action to Assemblymember Rubio to VOTE NO on SB 58 to better represent the children and families of the 48th Assembly District. The community will not allow the alcohol and hospitality industry to influence the public health and safety of families across California.

What:   Rally / Media Event
When:  Monday July 1, 2019, 10:00-11:00am
Where: 100 Barranca Street, West Covina, CA 91791
Who:

  • CA Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA)
  • Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
  • El Monte Community Leaders
  • Los Angeles Drug and Alcohol Policy Alliance
  • Pueblo y Salud

Why:   SB 58 would allow closing times for on-sale retailers to be extended from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. as part of a “pilot program” conducted by the ABC. The pilot program may be conducted in ten cities: San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Long Beach, Cathedral City, Coachella, Palm Springs and Fresno.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), California already suffers more annual alcohol-related harm than any other state: over 10,500 alcohol-related deaths, $35 billion in total costs, $14.5 billion in state costs.

Alcohol Justice and the California Alcohol Policy Alliance have taken a strong OPPOSE position on SB 58 and respectfully ask that this dangerous nightlife experiment be stopped. California taxpayers do not need to pay for additional public health and safety harms in order to profit the nightlife industry.

SB 58 Quick Facts

  • Is a poorly conceived and inadequately funded pilot project
  • Strips away uniform protections of 2 a.m. last call
  • Costs the state at least $3-4 million per year to administer, mitigate the harm, and clean the blood off the highway; costs cities and towns in “Splash Zones” millions more
  • Disregards 40 years of peer-reviewed, public health research on the dangers of extending last call
  • Ignores $34 billion in annual alcohol-related harm in California
  • Subsidizes and rewards late-night alcohol-sellers at tax-payer expense

PABLO ESCOBAR’S WIDOW BREAKS HER SILENCE

MIAMI, July 1, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Discovery en Español presents its US exclusive production, the story of María Isabel Santos (formerly Victoria Henao Escobar and better known as “La Tata”), the widow of world-famous Colombian drug dealer Pablo Escobar Gaviria. The woman, who adopted a new identity, breaks her silence and talks about her life alongside one of the bloodiest men of the 20th century in LA VIUDA DE ESCOBAR, a two-hour revealing documentary premiering July 14 at 9pm E/P and on the Discovery en Español GO app the following day.

PABLO ESCOBAR’S WIDOW BREAKS HER SILENCE

The story of the Escobar Gaviria family is one of the darkest ones ever known. The relationship between its members as well as the mysterious death of its leader and the family’s subsequent escape from Colombia, roused uncertainty and resentment. LA VIUDA DE ESCOBAR is a two-part documentary featuring first-person narrator María Isabel Santos, revealing the intimacy of her relationship with one of Colombia’s most fearful human beings.

At age 24, before becoming an iconic cocaine trafficking figure, Pablo Escobar secretly married a 15-year-old girl whom he affectionately called “Tata”. Escobar was the love of her life and their fates would become eternally linked together.

Twenty-five years after her husband’s death, María breaks the silence she kept out of respect for drug trafficking victims. Now she faces a world divided among those who demonize her accusing her of not stopping her husband from ending so many lives, and those who are more compassionate.

LA VIUDA DE ESCOBAR is a documentary about a woman who wants to find her voice, her life, and her identity. Tata: Pablo Escobar’s victim or accomplice?

The new production will be available on the “Discovery en Español GO” app. For more information, visit facebook.com/discoveryenespanol and Instagram @discoveryenespanol.
