CAPA: Mothers Rally To Stop Wiener’s 4 A.M. Bar Bill At Calif. State Assemblymember Mike Gipson’s District Office

LOS ANGELES, July 1, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Members of California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA) will hold an opposition rally at the Compton district office of California State Assemblymember Mike Gipson on Tuesday morning July 2, 2019 at 10 a.m.

California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA) AlcoholPolicyAlliance.org

The community is concerned because Assemblymember Gipson has received over $85,000 in campaign contributions from alcohol and hospitality industry companies. The community believes public health and safety is being compromised by the influence of this money. The community stands in opposition to state bill SB 58, Senator Wiener’s third attempt in three years to disrupt the protections of a statewide uniform last call by giving 10 cities, in a so-called “pilot program,” the ability to extend hours of alcohol sales in bars, restaurants and clubs. This is not a benefit to community; this is a benefit to private and corporate interests.

In 2018, Assemblymember Gipson voted YES to pass a nearly identical version of the bill – Senator Wiener’s SB 905 — that Governor Brown vetoed, saying “I believe we have enough mischief from midnight to 2 without adding two more hours of mayhem.”  The rally is a call to action to Gipson to VOTE NO on SB 58 to better represent the children and families of the 64th Assembly District. The community will not allow the alcohol and hospitality industry to influence the public health and safety of families across California.

What:   Rally / Media Event
When:  Monday July 2, 2019, 10:00-11:00am
Where: Compton City Hall – 205 S. Willowbrook Avenue, Compton, CA 90220
Who:

  • Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
  • Asian American Drug Abuse Prevention Program (ADAPP, Inc.)
  • Cambodian Association of America (CAA)
  • Los Angeles Drug and Alcohol Policy Alliance
  • Pueblo y Salud

Why:   SB 58 would allow closing times for on-sale retailers to be extended from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. as part of a “pilot program” conducted by the ABC. The pilot program may be conducted in ten cities: San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Long Beach, Cathedral City, Coachella, Palm Springs and Fresno.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), California already suffers more annual alcohol-related harm than any other state: over 10,500 alcohol-related deaths, $35 billion in total costs, $14.5 billion in state costs.

Alcohol Justice and the California Alcohol Policy Alliance have taken a strong OPPOSE position on SB 58 and respectfully ask that this dangerous nightlife experiment be stopped. California taxpayers do not need to pay for additional public health and safety harms in order to profit the nightlife industry.

SB 58 Quick Facts

  • Is a poorly conceived and inadequately funded pilot project
  • Strips away uniform protections of 2 a.m. last call
  • Costs the state at least $3-4 million per year to administer, mitigate the harm; costs cities and towns in “Splash Zones” millions more
  • Disregards 40 years of peer-reviewed, public health research on the dangers of extending last call
  • Ignores $34 billion in annual alcohol-related harm in California
  • Subsidizes and rewards late-night alcohol-sellers at tax-payer expense

Fight for Independence and Desire for Closure Mark Gritty Dramas on Gran Cine in July

0

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida, July 1, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Olympusat, Inc., the TV and media industry leader specializing in Spanish-language TV networks presents Gran Cine, a contemporary Spanish-language movie network offering a wide range of originally produced and recently released blockbusters from México, Latin America, and the U.S., 24 hours a day without commercial interruption.

This month, Gran Cine is pleased to present a wide range of thought-provoking films running the gamut from dark comedy to historical biopic, a thriller and a poignant study about triumphing over the grief of losing a loved one.

Levantamuertos
07/03 – 10:00 p.m. EDT
Things literally heat up for Ivan (Daniel Galo), a coroner’s assistant assigned to traverse the streets of Mexicali picking up corpses in Levantamuertos. Grief stricken by the loss of his brother and struggling to cope with the monotony of his stomach-turning work in 120-degree heat, Ivan seeks relief at the local bar where he meets Rosa (Sofia Felix). After a night of debauchery, things go from bad to worse when Ivan awakens next to Rosa’s motionless body and winds up acquiring a pet pig named Homie in a raffle. A low-key seriocomedy, from first-time feature director Miguel Nuñez, Levantamuertos was filmed in and around Mexicali, Mexico. It costars Roberto Medina, Heriberto Norzagaray and Felipe Tututi.

Morelos
07/07 – 10:00 p.m. EDT
The action takes place between 1812 to 1815 during the early days of the Mexican War of Independence. Directed by industry veteran Antonio Serrano (Hidalgo, Lucia, Lucia), the biopic tells the story of José María Morelos y Pavon, a Roman Catholic priest and successful rebel leader. Motivated by his desire to address social injustices, Morelos leads a small but disciplined army to important victories against Royalist forces despite having no military experience. Dagoberto Gama stars as José María Morelos. Raúl Méndez, Juan Ignacio Aranda, Stephanie Sigman and Gustavo Sanchez Parra costar.

Nos Vemos Papá (See You Dad)
07/10 – 10:00 p.m. EDT
After the death of her beloved father, Pilar slips into an all-consuming melancholy that devolves into an inability to leave the protective cocoon of her home and the hallucinatory relationship she maintains with her departed parent. Helmed by first-time feature director Lucía Carreras, Nos Vemos Papá stars Cecilia Suárez as Pilar and Marcelo D’Andrea as her father. The film is at once a carefully nuanced character study of the frailty of the human condition and a beautifully photographed work of modern Mexican cinema.

Borrar de la Memoria (Delete from Memory)
07/14 – 10:00 p.m. EDT
Set against the backdrop of the chaotic student protests that took place in Mexico during the 60s, Borrar de la Memoria deftly and unflinchingly tells the tale of relentless journalist Germán Acosta, who commits to solving the 1968 brutal murder of Diana Inés. At the same time, Acosta investigates the case of Roberto Renteria, a young cinematographer who mysteriously disappeared the same year and who may hold the key to those responsible for shocking crimes. Alfredo Gurrola directs. Adalberto Parra stars as Germán Acosta; with Diana Garcia (Sin Nombre, What Maisie Knew) and Rodrigo Virago as Roberto Rentería.

Meyer Shank Racing Locks Out Front Row for Acura in Qualifying at Watkins Glen

0
Trent Hindman led the Acura qualifying effort at Watkins Glen International Raceway on Saturday, and will start first in the GTD category for Sunday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.

WATKINS GLEN, New York, June 30, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Trent Hindman and Christina Nielsen led the Acura qualifying effort at Watkins Glen International Raceway on Saturday, and will start first and second, respectively, in the GTD category for Sunday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.

Trent Hindman led the Acura qualifying effort at Watkins Glen International Raceway on Saturday, and will start first in the GTD category for Sunday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.

Hindman throttled his Meyer Shank Racing #86 Acura NSX GT3 to the pole position for Sunday’s endurance event, and shortly thereafter, Nielsen claimed the front-row spot alongside him in her #57 Caterpillar-sponsored NSX GT3, which Meyer Shank runs in tandem with Heinricher Racing.

The Acura Team Penske ARX-05 prototype entries will start second and third in the DPi category. Dane Cameron qualified second to the Mazda driven by Oliver Jarvis, while Ricky Taylor took the sister ARX-05 to third.

Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo
Hindman recorded his second pole position of the 2019 season, following an earlier pole at Sebring in March. His average speed of 116.595 miles per hour led the 16 GTD entries in the field. Hindman will team with Mario Farnbacher and Justin Marks in Sunday’s six-hour test over the 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International Circuit.

Nielsen took her NSX GT3 to the second qualifying spot at an average of 116.244 miles per hour. She teams with Katherine Legge and Bia Figueiredo in this afternoon’s fifth round of the championship. Legge and Andy Lally co-drove to the GTD victory here in 2017, the first year for the current NSX GT3 program.

Hindman and Farnbacher came into the weekend with 84 points to lead the 2019 IMSA GTD drivers’ championship.

Acura Team Penske ARX-05
Cameron led most of the qualifying session in his ARX-05, and ended up missing the pole by just over two-tenths of a second to Jarvis, at an average speed of 136.208 mph. He and co-driver Juan Pablo Montoya will put a two-race winning streak on the line Sunday, following victories at Mid-Ohio in May and at Detroit earlier this month. Cameron and Montoya entered the weekend ranked second in the drivers’ championship.

Taylor was just six-hundredths of a second further back of Cameron, qualifying third at 136.108 mph. He’ll be teamed with Helio Castroneves when the green flag falls at 9:45 a.m. EDT on Sunday morning. Taylor and Castroneves rank third in the drivers’ standings, a single point behind Cameron and Montoya.

Same-day television coverage from Watkins Glen begins at 7 p.m. EDT Sunday on the NBC Sports network.

Quotes
Trent Hindman (driver, #86 Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3) qualified on GTD pole: “I was pushing hard during those qualifying laps. I was pushing everything the Acura NSX GT3 had. We had a lot of unknowns after practice this morning due to the weather [early morning rain]. We even made some gambles on the car setup last night which we wanted to try out but didn’t have the opportunity to before qualifying. As always, the Meyer Shank crew pulled through and gave me an amazing car. It is excellent to secure the ‘one-two’ starting spots for this team. As competitive as the GTD category is, qualifying holds one hundred percent importance. It will feel great to get the Acura out into clean air tomorrow for the race. I am beyond grateful to be a part of this crew and secure the pole position.”

Dane Cameron (#6 Acura Team Penske ARX-05) qualified second: “I think we have a good Acura Team Penske DPi here this weekend at Watkins Glen. [I’m] A little bit annoyed to come up short and start second tomorrow. We were on a good lap earlier in the session and got held up again. I don’t know what the deal is with qualifying these days, but everyone is on their own program. Starting on the front row – second and third for the two cars – is still a great place to be. It’s a long day tomorrow. Last year, we qualified third and went to the lead in the first corner and held it almost until the end. This year, the goal is to hold it until the end.”

CPSC Reminds Consumers to Celebrate with Safety This Fourth of July Season

0
Most Injured Body Parts Caused by Fireworks

New Data Released on Fireworks-Related Injuries and Deaths

WASHINGTON, July 1, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Family, fun, food and fireworks. It’s that time of year when many will be celebrating the Fourth of July holiday. All too often, however, celebrations can end with a trip to the hospital if fireworks are mishandled. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) wants to make sure consumers know the risks, so that they can prevent the tragedies. At a fireworks safety press conference and demonstration on the National Mall, CPSC announced that at least five fireworks-related deaths were reported in 2018—all associated with reloadable aerial devices.

“CPSC works year-round to help prevent deaths and injuries from fireworks, by verifying fireworks meet safety regulations in our ports, marketplace and on the road,” said Ann Marie Buerkle, CPSC Acting Chairman. “Beyond CPSC’s efforts, we want to make sure everyone takes simple safety steps to celebrate safely with their family and friends.”

Injuries:
There were an estimated 9,100 fireworks-related, emergency department-treated injuries in 2018, with 62 percent of them occurring during the month surrounding the Fourth of July (June 22-July 22). During that period, firecrackers were the number one cause of injuries, accounting for 19 percent of the estimated injuries.  For children under 5 years of age, sparklers accounted for more than half of the total estimated injuries.

Deaths:
Since 2018 reporting is not yet complete, the five fireworks-related deaths should be considered a minimum. The victims range in age from 16 to 49. In one of the reported cases, an 18-year-old launched a mortar shell from a tube on the top of his head. The ignited shell did not launch and exploded. The victim died in the hospital the next day. CPSC staff has reports of 121 fireworks-related deaths between 2003 and 2018.

Tips to Celebrate Safely:
For more information, visit the fireworks safety education center and check for fireworks recalls at CPSC.gov.

0

PRINCETON, New Jersey, June 27, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — After a successful year collaborating with LearnLaunch as an investor, ETS is leveraging lessons learned and $2 million in investment capital to support education start-ups through a sponsored accelerator.

The ETS® Accelerate program is accepting applications for its first cohort through July 10, 2019. Startups interested in participating can learn more on LearnLaunch Accelerator’s website (www.learnlaunch.com/accelerate) and submit applications by visiting F6S (http://www.f6s.com/learnlaunchacceleratorboost).

The new accelerator will be themed-based, providing focused resources and value. These themes focus on critical issues in education and allow for focused programming and resources from ETS and LearnLaunch. Companies applying to this first cohort should be addressing “Skills for a New Economy,” “English Language Learning” or both.

“The purpose of ETS creating an accelerator is to leverage ETS’s vast resources around having a greater impact and reach into education,” said Richard Varn, ETS Venture Partner Lead. “I believe that this accelerator will be among the best because we’re taking the power of two very strong institutions and putting them together to focus on solving educational challenges. LearnLaunch is the leader in the edtech accelerator space. This, combined with ETS’s depth and breadth of expertise in education measurement, provides an advantage to edtech entrepreneurs.”

While this new accelerator is sponsored by ETS, day-to-day operations will be managed by LearnLaunch Accelerator. As in all LearnLaunch Accelerator programs, companies will get access to funding, industry-leading mentors, strategic plans for scale and a community of like-minded supporters.

“Over the past seven years, we’ve worked with 58 start-ups and have developed a critical milestone approach that helps founders create a path to success that is measurable, tangible and attainable,” said Jean Hammond, co-Founder and General Partner of LearnLaunch Accelerator. “In ETS, we found an ideal partner, who will help companies design quantifiable research to move change in education. Together, our theme-based accelerator program can drive change to help schools and employers really support learners. We will also continue our standard programs for any edtech company encompassing all of early childhood education, K-12, higher ed and workforce edtech, with applications for the next cohort opening in October.”

This unique collaboration allows both organizations to mentor and fund promising start-ups to help improve their efficacy around solving educational challenges and advancing equity in education. Furthermore, it will substantially increase the resources that start-ups selected by ETS Accelerate will receive to help them reach their growth goals. Specifically, ETS is providing start-ups participating in the program with monetary support, vast industry expertise, in-kind services (including the opportunity for subsequent funding) and access to additional resources.

ETS remains committed to providing fair and valid assessments, research and related services. This initiative, however, provides another avenue for ETS to advance its mission beyond educational research and assessment to include support for the education start-up community.

The community is concerned that because Assemblymember Santiago has received direct campaign contributions from the alcohol industry, from corporations such as Anheuser-Busch, 7-Eleven Inc., and the California Beer & Beverage Distributors, their public health and safety is being compromised. SB 58 is Senator Wiener’s third attempt in three years to disrupt the protections of a statewide uniform last call by giving 10 cities in a “pilot program” the ability to extend hours of alcohol sales in bars, restaurants and clubs. The community members are using the rally as a call to action to Assemblymember Santiago to better represent the children and families of the 53rd Assembly District.

What:   Rally / Media Event
When:  Thursday, June 27, 2019, 10:00-11:00am
Where: 320 West 4th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013
Who:

  • CA Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA)
  • Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
  • Madres Que Luchan
  • Los Angeles Drug and Alcohol Policy Alliance
  • Pueblo y Salud
  • The Wall Las Memorias
  • Coalition to Prevent Alcohol Related Harms in LA Metro (CoPalm)
  • Behavioral Health Services

Why:

SB 58 is a poorly conceived and inadequately funded pilot project that would allow closing times for on-sale retailers to be extended from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m.

  • Strips away uniform protections of 2 a.m. last call
  • Has been projected to cost the state at least $3-4 million per year to administer and mitigate the harm; costs cities and towns in “Splash Zones” millions more
  • Disregards 40 years of peer-reviewed, public health research on the dangers of extending last call
  • Ignores $34 billion in annual alcohol-related harm in California
  • Subsidizes and rewards late-night alcohol-sellers at tax-payer expense
