SACRAMENTO, California, May 2, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — As part of a continuing commitment to building healthier communities, CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) celebrated today the expansion of its annual Project Health free health screening campaign to Sacramento with a fun-filled community event at CVS Pharmacy, 1587 W El Camino Avenue, in Sacramento. Today’s event is one of 32 free health screenings that will take place in the Sacramento area between now and June 30.

CVS Health

The event also included the presentation of a $75,000 grant from the CVS Health Foundation to the Sacramento Native American Health Center to help expand opioid treatment options locally. The funds will be used to help engage more patients with internal treatment options like medication-assisted treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-focused CBT and integrative or holistic therapies, which have shown to provide greater success in abstinence from substances.

“CVS Health is committed to expanding access to quality and affordable care, both through our retail footprint and with national and local non-profits and organizations who share our belief that better health starts at the community level,” said Garth Graham, vice president of Community Health and Impact, CVS Health. “We are thrilled to be here today in Sacramento celebrating the expansion of Project Health, and look forward to providing local residents with free health screenings over the next two months, as part of our commitment to building healthier communities.”

Project Health events, which will be held on Thursday – Sunday in rotating stores across Sacramento through June, are open to everyone and do not require an appointment. Project Health offers an array of free comprehensive health assessment screenings, including blood pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI), glucose and total cholesterol screenings, which can help detect risk for chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

The expansion of Project Health will also do more to screen for social determinants of health that affect personal health and communities. About 60 percent of life expectancy is driven by behavioral, social and environmental factors including family, education, housing, and access to fresh food. Project Health events have a proven track record of improving patient engagement and ultimately, healthier outcomes.

Once screened, patients have access to on-site consultations with bilingual nurse practitioners or physician assistants who will analyze results and refer patients who require additional medical care and follow up to no-cost or low-cost medical facilities nearby or to their primary care physician.

Sacramento is one of five cities in California where a total of 256 Project Health screenings will take place this year through December. Events are occurring year-round in Los Angeles, and took place earlier this year in Fresno and San Francisco. Project Health will begin in the San Diego area in July.

Since it was established in 2006, Project Health has delivered more than $127 million in free health care services to nearly 1.7 million people in multicultural communities with a large number of uninsured or underinsured Americans.

Los Angeles Says NO 4 a.m. Last Call

Alcohol Justice logo.

LOS ANGELES, May 2, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA), Alcohol Justice, and Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Koretz have come together again to host a press event to oppose another 4 a.m. bar bill. SB 58 is State Senator Scott Wiener’s 3rd attempt in three years to disrupt the state’s uniform mandatory closing time for alcohol sales. In response, Councilmember Koretz introduced a resolution (Council File: 19-002-S39) opposing SB 58 on March 5, 2019. Friday’s press event participants will report on the city and statewide public health and safety threats the bill would create by allowing a patchwork quilt of cities – including Los Angeles – to extend alcohol sales to 4 a.m. If passed and signed into law by Governor Newsom, SB 58 would launch a dangerous ten-city, five-year experiment that could expose over 76% of California’s population to increased alcohol-related harm. The bill faces a Senate Appropriations Committee determination by May 16, 2019.

What: Press Event/Opposition Rally/Call to Action

When:  Friday, May 3, 2019, 9:00 a.m.

Where: Los Angeles City Hall, 200 N Spring St. Los Angeles CA, 90012 (First Street steps)

Who:

  • Paul Koretz, Los Angeles City Council District 5
  • Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Los Angeles City Council District 8
  • Sonny Skyhawk, Alcohol Justice
  • Melissa Estelle, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
  • Miriam Castro, Promotora – Mujeres Transformando La Comunidad
  • Richard Zaldivar, The Wall Las Memorias Project
  • Brenda Villanueva, Los Angeles Drug & Alcohol Policy Alliance (L.A.DAPA)
  • Gennesis Lopez, Coalition to Reduce Alcohol Related Harms in LA Metro (CoPalm)
  • Veronica De Lara, California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA)

Why:

  • Having failed to pass two previous 4 a.m. bar bills (SB 384 in 2017, SB 905 in 2018), State Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) authored SB 58, a poorly conceived and inadequately funded ABC “pilot project” to extend last call to 4 a.m. in ten cities.
  • SB 58 disregards 40 years of peer-reviewed, public health research on the dangers of extending last call.
  • SB 58 will strip away uniform protections of the existing 2 a.m. last call, and spread additional alcohol overconsumption, loss of life, injury, and nuisance across the state.
  • According to California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), fatal DUI is a chronic, worsening problem for California.
  • The U.S. Community Preventive Services Task Force found that every 2-hour increase in last-call times results in greater vehicle crash injuries and E.R. admissions.
  • There is no such thing as “local control” in alcohol policy. The harm from one city’s decision to change last-call times “splashes” over every surrounding community.
  • SB 58 will cost the state at least $3-4 million per year to administer, mitigate the harm, and clean the blood off the highway; and cost cities and towns in “Splash Zones” millions more.
  • According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), California already suffers over 10,500 alcohol-related deaths annually, $35 billion in total costs, and $14.5 billion in state costs.
  • SB 58 subsidizes and rewards late-night alcohol-sellers at tax-payer expense.

Sales of Honda's all-new 2019 Passport SUV helped push Honda trucks into positive territory as American Honda reports April 2019 sales results. (PRNewsfoto/American Honda Motor Co., Inc.)

“As industry sales continue to level off, we are increasing our share of the market through the strength of our car and truck lineups and our disciplined approach to sales,” said Henio Arcangeli, Jr. senior vice president of Automobile Sales at American Honda Motor Co. “The compact SUV segment remains a bright spot for both Honda and Acura brands in 2019, with CR-V the outright retail sales leader in the industry’s largest segment, and the Acura RDX the fastest growing model in the compact luxury SUV segment in 2019 and the top-selling retail model.”

Civitas Capital Group Logo

In announcing the award, the board of the Hispanic Alumni of Southern Methodist University said Anchia was unanimously approved due to his dedication to the university, as well as his leadership and public service in North Texas.

“I am extremely honored to receive this award from my alma mater,” Anchia said. “SMU gave me the education I needed to succeed in business and politics. It’s where I first learned to listen to opinions from people whose worldview differed from mine and find common ground. It’s also where I learned how to stand up for what I believe in and persuade others that certain fights were worth fighting. I’m thankful to The Hispanic Alumni of SMU, a group of business and civic leaders that contributes so much to our community.”

Anchia received his undergraduate degree cum laude from SMU and earned his juris doctorate from Tulane University Law School. He has served as a State Representative in the Texas Legislature since 2004. He currently is Chairman of the International Relations & Economic Development Committee. From 2011 to 2015, Anchia served as an appointee of President Barack H. Obama to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations.

The Hispanic Alumni of SMU was established in 1997. The mission of the group is to serve as the link between SMU Hispanic alumni and the SMU community, while promoting the Hispanic Alumni Scholarship. The Distinguished Hispanic Alumni Award began in 2014. Anchia is its 7th recipient.

The award ceremony was held Thursday, April 25, in Jones Hall in the Meadows Museum.

Letter Carriers’ Annual Food Drive Set for May 11 Throughout Nation

0
National Association of Letter Carriers.

27th Food Drive Will Help Feed Needy Families in All 50 States

WASHINGTON, April 30, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 27th annual national food drive on Saturday, May 11.

National Association of Letter Carriers.

The Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the country’s largest single-day food drive, provides residents with an easy way to donate food to those in need.

Customers simply leave their donation of non-perishable food items next to their mailbox before the delivery of the mail on Saturday, May 11. Letter carriers will collect these donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes, and distribute them to local food banks, pantries, shelters and churches. Visit stampouthungerfooddrive.us to learn more.

The Letter Carriers’ food drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam. It remains as important as ever, with many people facing economic struggles. Hunger affects tens of millions of people around the country, including millions of children, senior citizens and veterans.

Letter carriers see these struggles in the communities they serve, and believe that it is important to do what they can to help.

“This is a labor of love for letter carriers, and we are proud to see how it has grown in impact over the years,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “It’s an honor to be able to help people in need all across the country—and to do so in a way that brings out the best in so many Americans.”

The timing is important, with food banks, pantries and shelters running low on donations from the winter holidays and with summer approaching, when most school meal programs are suspended.

Last year, letter carriers collected 71.6 million pounds of food donations along their postal routes. That brought the total since NALC’s food drive began in 1993 to more than 1.67 billion pounds.

On May 11, as they deliver mail, the nation’s 202,000 letter carriers will collect the donations that residents have left near their mailboxes. People are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox before the regular mail delivery on Saturday.

The food donations stay in each community, going to help local residents. Several national partners are assisting NALC in the food drive: the U.S. Postal Service, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, United Way Worldwide, the AFL-CIO, Valpak and Valassis. We are also very pleased to have the participation of two new national partners this year: the Kellogg Co. and CVS.

This year’s effort includes a public service announcement with actor and director Edward James Olmos.

People who have questions about the drive in their area should ask their letter carrier, contact their local post office or go to nalc.org/food, facebook.com/StampOutHunger or twitter.com/StampOutHunger.

The 284,000-member National Association of Letter Carriers represents letter carriers across the country employed by the U.S. Postal Service, along with retired letter carriers. Founded by Civil War veterans in 1889, NALC is among the country’s oldest labor unions.

Poll: One In Four Parents Concerned About Their Child’s Ability to Communicate

0

ROCKVILLE, Maryland, May 1, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — One quarter of U.S. parents of children ages 0–8 have had concerns about their child’s ability to communicate, according to poll results released today by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) for national Better Hearing & Speech Month. At the same time, parents who were polled overwhelmingly agree that speech, language, and hearing developmental milestones are among the most important in life.

Commissioned by ASHA and conducted this spring by YouGov, this nationally representative poll of more than 1,100 parents revealed perceptions of communication and communication disorders among the most populous racial and ethnic groups—White, Black or African American, and Hispanic households. Most common among parents were concerns about speech development, followed by language concerns and then hearing-related worries.

Besides parents’ concerns about their children’s ability to communicate, the poll revealed the actions that parents took. Seventy-three percent of all parents who had concerns sought treatment, with 8 in 10 of those reporting that they perceived “a great deal” or “a good amount” of improvement after treatment. Speech-language pathologists headed the list of professionals that parents sought help from for their children’s speech and language issues; for hearing problems, pediatricians were the most commonly consulted, followed closely by audiologists.

The poll is the latest activity of ASHA’s Identify the Signs campaign, which educates the public about the warning signs of communication disorders. It marks the first time the campaign has done such comprehensive polling among the general population of parents, including a view into racial and ethnic minority groups. This coincides with the 50th anniversary year of ASHA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, a landmark development in the organization’s long history of leadership in the realm of diversity.

“This poll offers a rich picture of how U.S. households view communication development, communication disorders, and treatment,” ASHA 2019 President Shari Robertson, PhD, CCC-SLP, said.

“While it is encouraging that parents across the board reported that they often seek help from our professionals and see their children’s communication health improve significantly with treatment, the polling also found that more than one quarter of parents with concerns hadn’t sought treatment. This is far too many when it comes to communication health, something parents themselves strongly agreed is important to their children’s well-being. Since communication disorders are highly treatable, this is an especially unfortunate missed opportunity for those children.”

According to the poll results, the top reasons parents gave for not seeking treatment were uncertainty about where to get treatment; pediatricians telling them that their children would grow out of the problem; a child’s school or teacher saying there wasn’t a problem; parents thinking that the concern didn’t seem like a big deal; and parents not knowing where to start or who to contact.

In addition, whether parents had concerns or not, the polling suggests that too many families are in the dark about communication disorders and are not doing all that they can to foster the development of their children’s communication skills.

Just 23% of parents were able to correctly identify 75% or more of the signs of communication disorders provided in the survey. And just 5% were able to correctly identify all the signs of communication disorders provided.

In terms of fostering the development of communication skills, 9 in 10 respondents correctly identified activities that have a positive impact on communication skills, such as talking/having verbal interactions with others and being read to by family members. However, in practice, only 46% said that their children are read to 5–7 days a week.

More than half of all parents said that not enough information about communication disorders is available. Four in 10 received information from their child’s pediatrician, and nearly as many (35%) report receiving information from media sources. Compared with White families, more Black or African American and Hispanic families report receiving information via media sources.

According to ASHA President Robertson, “It is incumbent on us to keep spreading the word to as many communities as we can—to build the information and education flow about ways to foster a child’s communication development, as well as be informed about the signs of communication disorders and the availability of effective treatment.

“Our polling also showed that some parents may not fully trust their own instincts—less than half (42%) strongly agreed that they know their child and their child’s needs the best. I would encourage them to trust themselves more and get professional help right away if they sense something is wrong. Early intervention is absolutely key.”
