National campaign educates on reducing risks from agricultural pesticide exposure
WASHINGTON, March 27, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — With public service messages on radio, digital and social media, Hispanic Communications Network (HCN) / La Red Hispana, in partnership with the Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs (AFOP), launched a campaign this week to educate and raise awareness among the large number of Hispanic families who work in the fields on the risks of pesticide residues.
The national multimedia campaign coincides with National Farmworker Awareness Week (NFAW), featuring calls to action designed to help reduce the risk of contamination from pesticide contact among agricultural workers, their families and the general public.
National Farmworker Awareness Week consists of community actions that draw attention to the many challenges facing farmworkers, and also highlights and honors their important contributions. Farmworkers feed us, but their work is one of the hardest and most dangerous.
Scientific studies show that agricultural pesticide residues adhere to clothing, body and footwear. Pesticides are nearly impossible to detect because they are invisible and often odorless.
It is estimated that approximately 1 billion pounds of pesticides are applied on farms, forests, courtyards and golf courses in the U.S. each year. Even limited residue exposure can have long-terms affects on the brain of children.
This year, the campaign will donate long-sleeved shirts to farmworkers as a tool to better protect themselves against the dangers of exposure to pesticides and heat.
It also includes a series of practical tips in Spanish pesticide handlers and agricultural workers can take to reduce the risk of contact and accidental exposure to pesticides.
One recommendation is for farmworkers to change their work clothes and put on clean clothes as quickly as possible after work, especially before arriving home and having contact with their partners or children. It is also recommended to always leave boots outside the home, take a bath with soap and water, and wash one’s hair thoroughly.
The campaign offers a variety of informational resources on necessary precautions for workers, their families and people who handle pesticides as part of their job responsibilities.
“HCN has conducted several awareness campaigns about the risks of handling pesticides. Most agricultural workers in the U.S. are of Hispanic origin, making it critical for this potentially life-saving information to be directly delivered to workers in the fields via radio and mobile phones, and in Spanish,” said HCN President Alison Rodden.
The campaign will continue until March 31 through HCN’s radio station affiliates, and via HCN’s La Red Hispana Facebook channel.

Cal/OSHA Cites Ceramic Material and Supply Company $250,000 for Willful Failure to Guard Machinery in Fatal Accident
SANTA ANA, California, March 26, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Cal/OSHA has issued more than $250,000 in citations to Aardvark Clay & Supplies, Inc. for its willful failure to properly guard equipment after an employee was fatally entangled in a clay manufacturing machine called a pug mill. Safety guards had been removed from the industrial mixer and the worker had not received training on the machine before the accident.

“Pug mills have rotating blades that can cause amputations and fatally injure employees,” said Cal/OSHA Chief Juliann Sum. “Employers must ensure all machinery and its parts are properly guarded, and employees are effectively trained to prevent tragic accidents like this.”
The Santa Ana company uses industrial pug mills to manufacture and mix clay. On September 20, 2018, an employee became caught in the unguarded mixing blades of the machine when he tried to identify why the clay stopped traveling through the extruder.
Cal/OSHA’s investigation found that all four of the shop’s pug mills had unguarded openings exposing employees to the moving parts. Safety regulations require mixers to have a cover to prevent employees’ hands from entering the machine during operation.
Aardvark Clay & Supplies also failed to effectively train workers on the hazards involved with operating the machinery and did not identify or correct the hazards. Although the manufacturer had provided safety guards for the machinery, the employer removed the guards. At one point, fabricated guards were added to the machines but were later removed when the employer believed they interfered with the rate of production.
Cal/OSHA cited the company $250,160 in proposed penalties for five violations, classifying one as willful-serious accident-related, one willful-serious, two serious and one general. The willful-serious violations were cited for the employer’s failure to guard machine openings and points of operation. The serious violations identify hazards from the unguarded cutting portion of the clay machine and failure of the employer’s safety program to identify unsafe conditions, implement corrective procedures and effectively train employees on work-related hazards.
From 2013 to 2017, contact with objects or equipment was among the leading causes of fatal occupational injuries in California. To avoid accidents and fatalities, employers can get free assistance from Cal/OSHA’s Consultation Services to ensure machines are properly guarded.
A citation is classified as serious when there is a realistic possibility that death or serious harm could result from the actual hazard created by the violation, and violations are classified as accident-related when the injury, illness or fatality is caused by the violation. A willful violation is cited when the employer is aware of the law and violates it nevertheless, or when the employer is aware of the hazardous condition and takes no reasonable steps to address it.
Cal/OSHA helps protect workers from health and safety hazards on the job in almost every workplace in California. Cal/OSHA’s Consultation Services Branch provides free and voluntary assistance to employers to improve their health and safety programs. Employers should call (800) 963-9424 for assistance from Cal/OSHA Consultation Services.

Putting Off Car Care? Stop Stalling
BETHESDA, Md., March 26, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Overdue for an oil change or a brake inspection? Whatever the service, by postponing necessary maintenance, you may be causing extensive damage to your vehicle and increasing the chance of a breakdown. With National Car Care Month in April upon us, the non-profit Car Care Council suggests you stop stalling and get your vehicle serviced today.

“Many people don’t realize the consequences of putting off needed vehicle maintenance. Not only can neglecting vehicle service cause safety issues if ignored, but it can lead to costly repairs down the road,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “With nearly 80 percent of vehicles needing service, a new part and/or repair, chances are your vehicle could use some extra attention.”
The Car Care Council recommends following a vehicle service schedule, keeping a free copy of the council’s Car Care Guide in the glovebox and performing the most common routine maintenance procedures to keep your vehicle performing at its best.
- Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
- Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change.
- Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
- Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear.
- Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and safety reasons, such as defrosting.
- Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.
“Be sure to fully inspect your vehicle annually, including performing a tune-up and wheel alignment,” said White. “If you suspect there is a problem, don’t stall and address it quickly before minor repairs become more complicated, expensive repairs.”
About the Car Care Council
The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. Head2Toe Recycling Announces Its Hard-Launch to Rethink Recycling
ORLANDO, Florida, March 26, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Wayne Elsey, Founder & CEO, Elsey Enterprises, has announced the hard-launch of Head2Toe Recycling. Because of the company’s established relationships with micro-entrepreneurs (small business owners) in developing nations having been created during Elsey’s nearly five years with his shoe drive fundraising companies, Head2Toe Recycling is already positioned as one of the market leaders.
Head2Toe Recycling enters into the recycling industry as one of the leaders in the sector because of its built-in infrastructure and operations. Executives at the company saw an opportunity to create a recycling company because most Americans do not realize where they can recycle all of their clothing, related accessories, shoes, and even personal mobile devices. The average American throws out an average of 81 pounds of clothing annually. In developing nations, there is a tremendous need for unwanted merchandise with 70 percent of the global population using recycled clothing. Head2Toe Recycling has established relationships, expertise, and ability to create the bridge for sustainable solutions between the U.S. and developing countries.
“Marie Kondo wrote in her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, ‘The question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life.’ Her Netflix show has demonstrated there is an immense desire to simplify, but the challenge is where to send unwanted things,” Elsey said. He continued, “Head2Toe Recycling is the solution for everyone’s clothing, accessories, and cell phones because we have the infrastructure and network to provide a proven sustainable solution. Unlike thrift stores and others right now, we’re not turning away people and their donations. People have the chance to clean out their homes, make a charitable contribution to a charity of their choice from our nonprofit partners and also help the global population and the planet when we Rethink Recycling and how it’s done.”
About Head2Toe Recycling
Head2Toe Recycling was founded by global philanthropist and social entrepreneur, Wayne Elsey. The company takes the clothing, related accessories, shoes, and mobile devices collected in the United States to micro-entrepreneurs in developing nations. The company helps people easily join the recycling revolution by being the one-stop-shop where retailers, business, individuals and communities can experience sustainability simplified with a proven market leader. Head2Toe Recycling helps the American population stop throwing used clothing, accessories, footwear and cell phones into the trash, harming the environment and our planet. Instead, people can contribute their items, get a cash donation made to a favored cause, and help micro-entrepreneurs around the world in need of economic work opportunities.
