In 2018, we took advantage of the continued consumer shift toward light-trucks, contributing to another record year for our Honda and Acura light-truck business, said Henio Arcangeli Jr., senior vice president of the American Honda Automobile Division. “In addition to our light-truck success, our passenger car business also delivered another strong year, with Civic retaining its crown in 2018 as the best-selling retail compact car in America for nine years running and Accord commanding the highest transaction prices in the midsize segment. We remain bullish on the passenger car business and look forward to another great year in 2019 across our entire Honda and Acura lineups.”

RMUI Lowers Tuition for Thousands of Students, Ranking Among Illinois’ Most Affordable Private Colleges

0
RMUI aims to continue to support its students along their educational journeys with its new graduate school tuition reduction program and increased need-based awards.

CHICAGO, Jan. 3, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Robert Morris University Illinois (RMUI) is offering thousands of dollars in graduate school tuition savings along with more undergraduate scholarship money for high-need students. The move is a first of its kind for graduate tuition at RMUI.

RMUI aims to continue to support its students along their educational journeys with its new graduate school tuition reduction program and increased need-based awards.

The Speed Ahead graduate tuition reduction program reduces tuition by 30 percent across all graduate school programs. For undergrads, RMUI is giving more need-based financial aid to new students with family incomes under $60,000. The two initiatives will create more opportunities and fewer financial barriers.

“Now more than ever, it’s important that cost for college should only be a consideration, not a crippling factor,” RMUI President, Mablene Krueger said. “Our new cost-savings initiatives will ultimately increase our accessibility and affordability, so we can support a greater number of students along their educational journeys.”

The savings will begin in February 2019 for graduate students and July 2019 for undergraduate students. For example, an incoming MBA graduate student will save $14,000 during the course of their graduate degree. Qualifying undergrads may receive up to $39,000 toward a bachelor’s degree in need-based aid awards, depending on Estimated Family Contribution, which is determined by FASFA.

“This is exciting because you don’t typically see initiatives take place like this at the graduate level in higher education,” RMUI’s Dean of Graduate Studies Dr. Kayed Akkawi said. “This proves RMUI’s commitment to instilling next-level readiness for its graduate and undergraduate students. This is a big win for higher education and students who choose RMUI.”

RMUI is currently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the most diverse university in the Midwest. The accolade can be partially credited to RMUI’s already affordable programs, which attract a diverse pool of candidates. A large portion of RMUI’s population are first-generation students who typically lack the family income needed to fund their education. RMUI’s tuition reduction and revamped scholarship model are all the more critical given America’s $1.5 trillion student loan debt crisis.

“I want to pursue a graduate degree because it opens so many opportunities,” RMUI senior, Jordan S. said, who is a business management student. “I will be the first in my family to graduate from college, so financially, it’s really difficult [to obtain bachelor’s and master’s degrees], but I’m in a better position to get both with RMUI’s help.”

With seven campuses across Illinois, RMUI remains committed to providing an experienced-focused education based on real-world curriculum to help all students get ahead of the curve with fewer financial burdens. To learn more about RMUI, visit speedahead.robertmorris.edu.

George A. Williams, M.D., Begins Term as 2019 President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology

0
AAO Logo

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 1, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — George A. Williams, M.D, today begins his term as the 123rd president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Williams, a retina specialist, was elected by the Academy’s community of 32,000 ophthalmologists in recognition of his scientific leadership and his deep commitment to advocating for improved patient care and reduced regulatory burdens. He will hold the office for one year.

AAO Logo

Dr. Williams previously served on Academy education and health policy committees, as Secretary for Federal Affairs, and as an Academy Trustee-at-Large. Throughout his service, Dr. Williams has brought authority and passion to the Academy’s patient-centered approach to healthcare legislation and policy. As a result, Dr. Williams is sought after by federal officials for his ability to explain how policies affect the patient-physician relationship and pathways to care.

In 2018, he testified before the U.S. House of Representatives’ Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee about ophthalmology’s critical need to access compounded treatments. The government dropped its controversial policy, in part due to Dr. Williams’ testimony. He regularly leads meetings with Medicare’s highest-ranking policymakers to discuss reimbursement and regulatory issues.

“The future of ophthalmology has never been more promising or challenging,” said Dr. Williams. “As health care consumes an increasing proportion of our economy, there is consensus that new models of health care delivery are required for a transition to value-based care. While everyone agrees with this principle, the devil is in the details. I will continue to do all that I can to ensure new proposals are patient-centered and medically sound.”

Dr. Williams is Department of Ophthalmology chair and director of the Beaumont Eye Institute at Beaumont Health in Royal Oak, Michigan. He is also professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and a partner with Associated Retinal Consultants. Dr. Williams has published more than 250 articles and book chapters in the field of vitreoretinal surgery. He has participated as principal investigator or co-investigator in more than 20 clinical trials sponsored by the National Eye Institute and industry.

He is a recipient of the Academy’s Special Recognition Award, the Secretariat Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award. An Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, he completed his ophthalmology residency and fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Eye Institute of the Medical College of Wisconsin.

About the American Academy of Ophthalmology

Cal/OSHA Cites Cannabis Company for Safety Violations Following Explosion that Burned Employee

0

FREMONT, California, Dec. 20, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Cal/OSHA has cited a manufacturer of cannabis products for multiple serious safety violations following an explosion that seriously injured a worker.

On June 19, an employee of Future2 Labs Health Services was working alone inside a 128-square-foot portable storage container in Watsonville, using propane to extract oil from cannabis leaves. The propane ignited and exploded, badly burning the worker. He was hospitalized for several days.

During the investigation, Cal/OSHA learned the employer did not test the atmosphere inside the storage container for flammable gases or vapors before allowing equipment to be operated. The equipment created a spark that ignited the propane gas where the employee was working.

“The process of using a highly flammable gas to extract oil from cannabis leaves is dangerous,” said Cal/OSHA Chief Juliann Sum. “To prevent injuries and mitigate risk, employers in the cannabis industry must establish and implement an effective Injury and Illness Prevention Program, provide effective training to their employees and comply with safety and health standards.”

Cal/OSHA cited Santa Cruz-based Future2 Health Services $50,470 in proposed penalties for 10 violations. The citations include three regulatory, four general and three serious accident-related violations. The serious accident-related violations were cited for the employer’s failure to:

  • Protect workers around flammable vapors
  • Identify hazards and provide personal protective equipment
  • Maintain equipment in a safe operating condition.

The other citations were issued for violations related to inadequate training, failing to establish an emergency action plan and a hazard communication program. Future2 Labs Health Services also failed to report a serious workplace injury to Cal/OSHA.

Cal/OSHA’s Cannabis Industry Health and Safety webpage provides helpful information to employers and workers. Workers in the cannabis industry, including those in cultivation, distribution, retail, testing and manufacturing, are exposed to hazards covered under existing Cal/OSHA regulations.

A violation is classified as serious when there is a realistic possibility that death or serious harm could result from the actual hazard created by the violation. Violations are classified as accident-related when the injury, illness or fatality is caused by the violation.

Newly Funded Partner Agencies Implement Early Intervention Program to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes Among Hispanics

0

WASHINGTON, Dec. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Jane Delgado, Ph.D., M.S., President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health (Alliance) today announced renewal and expansion of the Alliance’s Let’s Prevent Diabetes Program that works with community-based organizations to respond to the diabetes crisis facing our nation’s Hispanic population.

“In the past year, the Alliance has worked with five local communities around the country to demonstrate how a structured intervention program with lifestyle coaching as its centerpiece can help Hispanics address their pre-diabetes and prevent progression to type 2 diabetes,” said Dr. Delgado.

She added: “In recognition of our successes, through a partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we are expanding this program to two additional cities, so we can help more Hispanic men and women address this health challenge.”

About 38% of Hispanic adults are pre-diabetic, representing more than 13 million people. Delaying or preventing diabetes in these individuals represents a critical public health challenge, as well as an opportunity to reduce the costs of health care and lower the projected incidence of disability in America.

“This program has motivated me to stay physically active,” observed Maria, a participant in the program in Salinas, CA. “I have learned to take control of my food intake and physical activity. This program has also helped my kids and family.”

CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) is designed to make it easier for people with prediabetes to participate in evidence-based, affordable, and high-quality lifestyle change programs to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes and improve their overall health. Participants in the year-long program work with a lifestyle coach who follow CDC’s Prevent T2 curriculum and share their experiences with a peer group of individuals striving to make healthy lifestyle changes to avoid a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

Current community-based partner organizations implementing Lifestyle Change Programs with the Alliance to prevent diabetes are located in Salinas, CA; Kissimmee/Orlando, FL; Bellevue/Omaha, NE; El Paso, TX; and, Pasco/Walla Walla, WA. New partners in San Diego, CA and Brownsville, TX are launching their programs in January 2019.

Special Three Kings’ Day Fatherhood Event

0

SACRAMENTO, California, Dec. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Sacramento R3 Academy Fatherhood program is hosting a Three Kings’ Day event on Friday, January 4, to help Hispanic fathers celebrate a cherished holiday tradition with their children. The event will take place at La Familia’s Maple Neighborhood Center from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Fathers will enjoy a special time with their kids experiencing the rich heritage of this day, including traditional food (“rocas de reyes”), games (the “Valero”), crafts, and a toy give-away, sponsored by Toys for Tots through the U.S. Marines.

The R3 Academy offers Fatherhood programs through a Federal grant, teaching parenting, financial-management, and job-search skills. “These skills empower Hispanic dads,” says R3 Academy Director Edixon Martinez. “The role of a Latino father in the U.S. has changed, and learning communication and problem-solving skills helps these dads address the challenges they encounter.”

One example is many Hispanic fathers living in the U.S. fear their children won’t experience the Three Kings’ Day festivities of their youth. “I want my kids to know and love their heritage, like I do,” says R3 Academy participant Fernando. “But, I really didn’t know how to be a Hispanic dad to California kids! The R3 Academy has taught me a lot and my kids see a difference in me. And, they’re more open to learning about our cultural traditions, and that means a lot.”

The hundreds of fathers taught by Martinez over the past three years have “learned skills to bond with their kids, listen, resolve conflicts, and discipline without screaming or using ‘el cinto’ [the belt]. I love seeing dads like Francisco experience new levels of connection with their kids.”

He also is excited that R3 Academy graduates are helping with this Three Kings’ Day event. “These guys are enthusiastic about civic volunteering as an example for their kids. And this will be a special day of fun for everyone.”

Event location: 3301 37th Ave, Sacramento, CA 95824

The R3 Academy teaches fathers skills for strengthening the 3 Rs in his life: his relationship with his kids, with his partner/co-parent, and at work. R3 Academy programs are presented by Healthy Relationships California through funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Grant # 90FK0108.  www.RelationshipsCA.org
