NIH to fund national data collection on new mothers with disabilities

BETHESDA, Maryland, Nov. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The National Institutes of Health will fund the collection of information from women with disabilities who give birth in the United States. The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) is a survey of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, administered by state health departments. PRAMS covers approximately 83 percent of U.S. births and includes information on mothers’ attitudes and experiences before, during and shortly after pregnancy. PRAMS data are widely used by researchers and state and local governments to evaluate the effectiveness of pregnancy initiatives and outcomes.

“It’s estimated that more than 1 million women of childbearing age in the United States have a disability,” said Alison Cernich, Ph.D., director of the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (NCMRR), a component of NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). “But we really know very little about their pregnancy risks or even their basic experiences during or after pregnancy.”

NICHD research interests overlap with the focus of PRAMS, including pregnancy, breastfeeding, infant health care and contraception. Dr. Cernich explained that NCMRR’s efforts to include data on women with disabilities will contribute important information on the impact of disability on pregnancy and maternal and child health. It will provide $1.5 million to incorporate the disability survey as a supplement to the PRAMS questionnaire as part of data collection in 22 states. The survey will consist of 6 questions on functions, such as seeing, hearing, walking and self-care.

“The new data may help us better understand prenatal complications by disability type and severity, as well as the impact disability status may have on breastfeeding,” said NCMRR’s Dr. Cernich.

The supplemental disability survey is expected to be administered in 2019. Data are expected to be available by 2020.

March Of Dimes Database For Preterm Birth Research Will Accelerate Pace Of Discovery

ARLINGTON, Virginia, Nov. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The March of Dimes Database for Preterm Birth Research, announced today in the journal Scientific Data, is already one of the most important innovative new tools for collaborative research on preterm birth, which affects 15 million babies worldwide each year. Now it’s ready to become an engine of discovery, March of Dimes says.

Launched in 2015 at the March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center (PRC) at Stanford University School of Medicine — the first of what would become an international network of six PRCs – the Database integrates the work of researchers and clinicians from a broad range of disciplines into an open access site. The shared goal of these more than 200 scientists, physicians, engineers, statisticians, sociologists and other professionals is to foster innovation that will accelerate discoveries of the unknown causes of preterm birth and new ways to prevent it.  

The March of Dimes Database for Preterm Birth Research is the backbone of that effort, says Marina Sirota, Ph.D., leader of the initiative for March of Dimes, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and member of the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute at the University of California, San Francisco.

“Essentially, we’re creating a place for collaborative scientific discovery, through the ImmPort platform, where researchers from all over the world can start applying machine learning and artificial intelligence tools to the data coming out of the six March of Dimes PRCs,” Dr. Sirota says.  “We believe our efforts will lead to breakthroughs to improve the health of moms and babies and end preterm birth.”

The March of Dimes Database for Preterm Birth Research currently contains information from 15 molecular studies, with aggregated genetic data from almost 25,000 patients, and molecular measurements on more than 8,000 samples. More data are being added every day. The creation of the Database is led by the Stanford PRC, and is a collaboration between all the March of Dimes PRCs and Northrop Grumman Corporation, a partner of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation at the National Institutes of Health.
