Allstate Unveils the 2018 America’s Best Drivers Report® and Enlists Youth to Help Make Roads Safer

Infographic - America's Best Drivers Report: Top 10 Safest Driving Cities

NORTHBROOK, Illinois, Aug. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — The 14th annual Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report®, released today, named Brownsville, Texas, the city with America’s safest drivers.i Based on Allstate claims data, the report aims to shine a spotlight on safe driving leading up to the busy Labor Day travel weekend – a particularly deadly time of year on the road, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Infographic - America's Best Drivers Report: Top 10 Safest Driving Cities

Released each year, the America’s Best Drivers Report ranks the 200 largest cities in America based on collision frequency. To celebrate the top-ranking cities and encourage them to serve as examples for communities around the country, this year’s report taps an unexpected group to spread the message of safe driving: youth and teens, many of whom can’t even drive yet.

“Our backseat passengers are the drivers of tomorrow, and they’re looking to the adults in their lives to model safe driving behaviors,” said Ken Rosen, Allstate chief claims officer. “We truly care about making our communities safer, so we made an effort to go beyond just lecturing on the dangers of distracted and unsafe driving. To do this, we brought together inspirational youth, teens and their families in two low-ranking cities to stress the importance of roadway safety. By convening communities from coast to coast, we hope our influential future drivers and leaders can help Allstate make a positive impact on lives across America.”

Keeping America’s roads safe is a cause especially important to young people, for whom car crashes are a leading cause of death. Whether as passengers or drivers, auto collisions are the No. 1 killer of every single age from 16 to 23, as well as age 10.ii In an effort to educate communities on this issue, this year Allstate lent a hand to bottom-ranked Baltimore (ranked 200th) and Los Angeles (ranked 194th). Enlisting the help of young internet star Mila Stauffer, the company premiered a humorous, yet educational “Good Driving Starts Young” video at the events, held Aug. 28. The short video rallied the communities behind the importance of safe driving with 3-year-old Stauffer providing candid commentary on a series of unsafe – though unfortunately common – driving scenarios.

The average driver in America will experience a collision approximately once every 10 years, according to Allstate claims data. In top-ranked Brownsville, that figure improves by about 26 percent to once every 13.6 years. The following are the top 10 safest-driving cities, according to this year’s Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report:

Other highlights from the 2018 report include Miami as the most improved driving city, jumping 37 spots on the report, and Spokane, Washington, dropping 37 spots from last year’s rankings after a 12-spot drop the year before.

For the fourth straight year, the Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report also analyzed the correlation between collisions and hard-braking events in more than 100 cities, using data collected by Drivewise®, Allstate’s innovative telematics program that personalizes the auto insurance experience by providing real-time driving feedback and then rewarding safe driving with cash.

A hard-braking event is defined as slowing down eight miles per hour or more over a one-second period and can indicate unsafe driving behaviors, such as following too closely or aggressive or distracted driving. According to Drivewise data, the average American driver will experience approximately 19 hard-braking events for every 1,000 miles driven. Drivers in cities with fewer hard-braking events per 1,000 miles tend to have fewer auto property damage claims.

Drivers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, amassed the most hard-braking events of any city in America, with an average of 42 events per 1,000 miles. The next closest city – Bridgeport, Connecticut – came in significantly lower at 34.8 hard-braking events per 1,000 miles.

Understanding the risks that can cause crashes and impact a city’s rank and drivers’ safety is critical.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, preventable human factors, like drunk, distracted and drowsy driving, speeding and failure to use safety features contribute to 94 percent of car crashes.iii

“Traffic deaths are especially high during the busy summer travel season,” IIHS President Dr. David Harkey said. “We hope this year’s Best Drivers Report encourages more people to buckle up, slow down and minimize distractions to reduce their risks when they’re traveling over the holiday and all year round.”

Allstate recommends the following tips as you travel America’s roads. By collectively taking these precautions, drivers can help keep themselves and their communities in good hands, whether on busy highways or neighborhood streets:

  • Always keep your eyes on the road, stay vigilant and keep potential distractions securely tucked away.
  • Obey the speed limit and give yourself enough time to safely get where you’re going.
  • Fasten your safety belt on every trip – and make sure each passenger is buckled up, too.
  • Never drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
  • Leave plenty of distance between you and the vehicles in front of you.
  • Don’t text and drive. Nothing is that important.
  • Be sure to have an emergency roadside safety kit with caution signs and flares, and have a roadside service lined up for when you need a tow. Allstate Roadside Assistance provides options for coverage whether you’re in need now, want to add it to your auto policy or you’re interested in roadside membership.

iThe Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report® is the result of an in-depth examination of company claims data, to determine the likelihood drivers in America’s 200 largest cities will experience a vehicle collision compared to the national average. According to Allstate claims data, the average driver in the U.S will experience one collision every 10 years. This year, Allstate researchers analyzed property damage claims reported during the two-year period of January 2015 to December 2016. The report uses U.S. Census Bureau data to determine America’s 200 largest cities and defines a collision as any auto crash resulting in a property damage claim. Hard-braking data is based on customers voluntarily enrolled in Allstate’s Drivewise® telematics program from 2015-2016. A number of cities, and their surrounding suburbs, in the full 200 Best Drivers’ rankings are excluded from hard-braking analysis due to limited measurable Drivewise data, or because Drivewise was not available (California, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas). Allstate’s auto policies represent nearly 10 percent of all U.S. auto policies, making this report a realistic snapshot of what’s happening on America’s roadways. The Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report is produced solely to boost the country’s discussion about safe driving and to increase awareness of the importance of being safe and attentive behind the wheel. The report is not used to determine auto insurance rates.

Asset Securitization as an Alternative to Volatility in Financial Markets

FLEXFUNDS With over $2.5 billion in securitized assets and a presence across the Americas, Asia, and Europe, FlexFunds is a recognized leader in providing versatile investment vehicles for financial institutions, asset managers, and family offices www.flexfunds.com

MIAMI, Aug. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Market volatility has a major impact on investment portfolios. In addition to potential losses, volatility can trigger hasty decisions and, ultimately, the wrong ones by the investor.

FLEXFUNDS With over $2.5 billion in securitized assets and a presence across the Americas, Asia, and Europe, FlexFunds is a recognized leader in providing versatile investment vehicles for financial institutions, asset managers, and family offices www.flexfunds.com

The good news is that there are many strategies that can help protect portfolios. Investors should consider these strategies to avoid possible problems during difficult times.

Studies conducted by financial institutions worldwide reveal that one very interesting resource in response to the volatility of secondary financial markets is investment in assets that do not correlate with these markets or stock exchanges, thereby avoiding risking investments due to the volatility.

In a volatile investment environment, alternative investments should be considered such as hedge funds, real estate and private equity (including investments in cattle, agriculture, companies with film rights, works of art, etc.). The earnings are less correlated to stock market and bond fluctuations.

Securitization is a financial technique that allows normally illiquid assets to be converted into more liquid or less risky assets as it is a financial process in which any asset prone to generating revenue stream is turned into listed securities. In this way, access, flexibility, convenience and the possibility of transfer of the securitizations between securities accounts are achieved.

Also, asset securitizations offer a unique advantage regarding many alternative investment structures available: being able to participate in investment projects in a timely and expeditious manner given the more lenient timeframes and requirements of securitization programs.

Given the flexibility and versatility of the securitization program of companies like FlexFunds, its CEO Mario Rivero stated: “Asset managers and family offices are able to securitize any type of asset, and investors have at their disposal very interesting alternatives: from real estate to alternative assets, etc., with increased options for obtaining a return on assets by avoiding being affected by the expected volatility.”

About FlexFunds

With a total funded amount of US$2.5 billion dollars and a presence across the Americas, Asia and Europe, FlexFunds is a recognized leader in structuring customized investment vehicles for financial institutions, asset managers, hedge funds and family offices. Through its robust, versatile asset securitization program, FlexFunds allows for the creation of efficient investment strategies, expanding access to global investors.

ETCO: Authorities from 15 Latin American countries meet to discuss how to fight contraband

0

SAO PAULO, August 28, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — This week the Latin American Anti-Contraband Alliance (ALAC) is meeting for the first time in Brazil. The objective of the event, which includes authorities and specialists from 15 countries, is to establish shared actions between governments and civil entities to fight the illegal trade of products such as cigarettes, textiles, drinks, sporting goods, audio-visual products, and food.

The commitment to fighting smuggling is a challenge for all Latin American countries. Edson Vismona, President of the Brazilian Institute for Ethics in Competition (ETCO) and Co-President of ALAC, believes the presence of 15 countries from the region is extremely significant. “Brazil and the other member countries are currently suffering from contraband cigarettes that are smuggled in from Paraguay, especially in the Southern Cone. The statement made by President Mário Abdo Benítez that fighting smuggling and fraud are commitments of the new government, is very important,” Vismona said.

Vismona believes that in addition to integration among the member countries, it is necessary to adopt measures on different fronts in order to fight contraband. “Actions need to be taken by everyone in the areas of tax, regulatory, policing and control, diplomatic, and legislative, since this is a multifaceted problem that impacts all of society,” he said.

In 2017, for example, Brazil became the largest global market for illegal cigarettes, with 48% of the brands sold in the country smuggled in from Paraguay. This is the type of trade that brings great losses to Brazil, with more than R$ 43 billion in taxes not collected since 2011, which amount could have gone back to benefit the Brazilian people. And in Paraguay, the activities of criminal organizations cause increased violence, encourage corruption, theft of freight, drug trafficking, arms trafficking, and money laundering in the region.

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela are all members of ALAC.

New Nielsen Report Examines the Impact of Digital Technologies on the Lives of Latinx Consumers

Nielsen_Logo

NEW YORK, Aug. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today, Nielsen released Descubrimiento Digital: The Online Lives of Latinx Consumers, the second report in the company’s 2018 three-part diverse intelligence series focusing on the adoption and influence of multicultural consumers in the digital landscape. The report highlights how the digital usage of Hispanic consumers has amplified their influence on American culture.

Technology is transforming Latinx consumer behavior, from shopping to communication and media consumption. The report chronicles how these changes are informing society at-large and provides insights about how brands can better reach this important consumer group—the majority of whom were born or grew up in the internet age (60% versus only 40% of non-Hispanic Whites, according to the report). This means today’s Hispanic consumers didn’t transition to the internet; they were raised with it.

“The combination of relative youth, demand for cultural connectivity and accelerated digital fluency has positioned the Latinx community as cultural trendsetters,” remarked Stacie de Armas, Vice President, Strategic Initiatives & Consumer Engagement at Nielsen. “Technology has fundamentally changed the consumer experience for the Latinx community, who are making digital gains and advancements at a faster rate than the total market. This, combined with cultural behaviors, has created important differences in the way today’s Hispanics digitally communicate, inform, shop, consume content and mobilize for social justice.”

Nielsen’s Diverse Intelligence Series, which has become a leading industry resource, is aimed at helping marketers better understand and reach diverse consumers through data-driven insights. Descubrimiento Digital showcases demographics of the Hispanic population, including its relative youth, longer life expectancy, larger multigenerational households and its purchase and media preferences. One preference, for instance, is a favorable regard for socially-conscious brands and social networking.

“Digital spaces create opportunities for brands to authentically engage Hispanic consumers,” said Lillian Rodríguez-López, co-chair of Nielsen’s Hispanic/Latinx Advisory Council, and Vice President, Public Affairs and Communications at CC1 Companies. “Nielsen’s long term commitment to illustrating the market potential of diverse consumers is equally a commitment to the long-term sustainability of their clients’ businesses. Leveraging digital to establish relationships with us today will have a lasting bottom line impact for businesses well into the future.”

Highlights of Descubrimiento Digital: The Online Lives of Latinx Consumers include:

The Hispanic youth phenomenon means connecting with Latinx consumers in culturally relevant ways is imperative for brand survival and growth.

  • Hispanics have younger median age (27 vs. 42 for non-Hispanic Whites) and longer life expectancy (82 vs. 78.7 for non-Hispanic Whites), meaning they have 18 more years of effective buying power than non-Hispanic Whites.
  • 57% of Hispanics agree they are more likely to purchase brands that support a cause they care about (over-indexing non-Hispanic Whites by 9%), and 43% agree they expect the brands they buy to support social causes (over-indexing by 26%).

U.S. Hispanics’ relative youth and digital proclivity make them pacesetters for technology trends.

  • 53% of U.S. Hispanics agree they prefer products that offer the latest in new technology, and 36% agree they like to have a lot of gadgets, over-indexing non-Hispanic White consumers by 32%.
  • With 27% of Hispanics living in multigenerational households, younger Latinx generations have great influence on older Hispanics. Hispanics 50 and older over-index their non-Hispanic White counterparts by 36% for agreeing they like to have a lot of electronic gadgets.

Given the majority of Hispanics raised in the internet age, the web is their go-to resource for just about everything with social media of particular value.

  • Hispanics over-index for the amount of time they spend on social media, with 52% spending at least one hour per day on these sites, compared with 38% of non-Hispanic Whites, and 24% spending three or more hours per day, compared with 13% of non-Hispanic Whites.
  • Hispanics share social media content five times more often than non-Hispanic Whites.

Hispanics are motivated to buy online through deals and word-of-mouth reviews and regard digital advertising favorably.

  • 82% of Hispanics agree that the internet is a great way to gather information on products and services they’re considering purchasing, and 78% agree it is a great way to buy products.
  • Hispanics over-index on reading online reviews before purchasing a product, and 38% agree they like to share their opinions about products and services by posting reviews and ratings online (over-indexing non-Hispanic Whites by 46%).

TORRANCE, California, Aug. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The all-new 2019 Honda Insight has earned the 2018 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest overall safety rating of TOP SAFETY PICK+. The award is thanks to top ratings of “GOOD” in all crashworthiness tests, a standard “GOOD” rating for the Insight’s LED headlights and a “SUPERIOR” rating for the Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) feature of the standard Honda Sensing® suite of advanced driver-assistive and active safety technologies.

2019 Honda Insight Named Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS

“Insight continues to prove that it’s much more than just a pretty face with great fuel-efficiency ratings.” said Ray Mikiciuk, assistant vice president of Honda Automobile Sales. “With standard Honda Sensing® active safety tech and a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating, Insight is a hybrid with some serious safety chops.”

To qualify for the 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, a vehicle must earn “GOOD” ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests and an “ACCEPTABLE” or “GOOD” rating in the passenger-side small overlap test. It also needs an available front crash prevention system that earns an “ADVANCED” or “SUPERIOR” rating and available good-rated headlights.

On sale since June 29, the 2019 Honda Insight offers class-leading power and passenger space, universally appealing styling, and an EPA fuel economy rating of 55 mpg1 city (LX/EX), while simultaneously bringing a new level of driving sophistication and style to the compact hybrid market. All 2019 Insights are equipped with the Honda Sensing® suite of active safety and driver assistive features as standard equipment.

Insight was engineered to earn top-of-class collision safety ratings, which is proven true by the top rating from IIHS. In addition, Honda expects Insight to earn a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP)2.

Insight’s standard Honda Sensing® helps provide greater awareness of driving conditions around the vehicle, in some cases helping drivers maintain lane position and, under certain conditions, is capable of slowing or even stopping the vehicle if it detects a potential front collision. Comprising the Honda Sensing® suite are Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Forward Collision Warning; Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) incorporating Lane Departure Warning (LDW); Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS); and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).
