Cal/OSHA Reminds Employers to Protect Outdoor Workers from Heat Illness as Temperatures Rise Statewide

OAKLAND, California, June 21, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Cal/OSHA is reminding all employers to protect their outdoor workers from heat illness and to encourage their workers to take preventative cool-down breaks in the shade as temperatures rise throughout California. The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings for forecasts of triple-digit temperatures through the weekend, starting on Thursday in Southern California and beginning Friday in central and northern counties.

“During heat waves, employers must closely observe their employees for signs and symptoms of heat illness,” said Cal/OSHA Chief Juliann Sum. “As always, workers should be encouraged to drink water frequently and take preventative cool-down rest breaks in the shade when they feel the need to do so.”

California’s heat illness prevention regulation requires employers with outdoor workers to take the following four steps to prevent heat illness:

  • Plan – Develop and implement an effective written heat illness prevention plan that includes emergency response procedures.
  • Training – Train all employees and supervisors on heat illness prevention.
  • Water – Provide drinking water that is fresh, pure, suitably cool and free of charge so that each worker can drink at least 1 quart per hour, and encourage workers to do so.
  • Shade – Provide shade when workers request it and when temperatures exceed 80 degrees. Encourage workers to take a cool-down rest in the shade for at least five minutes. They should not wait until they feel sick to cool down.

Cal/OSHA urges workers experiencing possible overheating to take a preventative cool-down rest in the shade until symptoms are gone. Workers who have existing health problems or medical conditions that reduce tolerance to heat, such as diabetes, need to be extra vigilant. Some high blood pressure and anti-inflammatory medications can also increase a worker’s risk for heat illness. 

In addition to the other requirements outlined in California’s heat illness prevention regulation, it is crucial that supervisors are effectively trained on emergency procedures in case a worker does get sick. This helps ensure sick employees receive treatment immediately and that the symptoms do not develop into a serious illness or death.

Cal/OSHA’s Heat Illness Prevention special emphasis program, the first of its kind in the nation, includes enforcement of heat regulations as well as multilingual outreach and training programs for California’s employers and workers. Resulting from the 2013 Energy Reform laws in Mexico, CENACE operates and controls Mexico’s wholesale energy markets with the goals of promoting competition, efficiency, open access and planning for needed system upgrades and improvements. Prior to the reform, CENACE was part of Mexico’s largest state-owned utility, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE).

The certification awarded to Burns & McDonnell allows the company’s engineers to access CENACE developed power system models, enabling review of a wealth of data on grid performance and specific areas where generation or transmission assets could help improve reliability and efficiency.

The goal of free prep for the Praxis® Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) tests is to help level the playing field for all teacher candidates.

“ETS is committed to expanding diversity, equity and opportunity in the teacher pipeline,” said Walt MacDonald, ETS President and CEO. “To do this we’re focusing our attention on the need to further support our teacher candidates by making sure that they have access to free tools and resources that enable them to succeed.”

With the Praxis Core tests prep from Khan Academy and ETS, aspiring teachers will gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed on test day and beyond — all for free. The program will be available in spring 2019.

Free prep for the Praxis Core tests will diagnose each teacher candidate’s strengths and weaknesses. Publix, based in Lakeland, Florida, with 1,186 retail stores in seven states: Alabama (68), Florida (787), Georgia (186), North Carolina (37), South Carolina (58), Tennessee (42), and Virginia (8) has worked alongside the March of Dimes for more than two decades. This year, during their annual in-store and associate March for Babies fundraising campaign, Publix customers and associates raised more than $7.8 million and brings the Publix 23-year total to an impressive contribution of more than $80.8 million to improve the health of moms and babies.

March of Dimes imagines a world in which every baby gets the best possible start in life. Funds raised by Publix customers and associates support key activities to reach this goal, such as:

  • Advocacy for policies that prioritize the health of moms and babies, such as the PREEMIE Reauthorization Act of 2018, introduced in the Senate on June 7.
  • Educating medical professionals to make sure that moms and babies get the best possible care.
  • Supporting families through March of Dimes NICU Family Support,® which is offered in more than 100 hospitals across the United States, providing support, information and critical health care messages. 
  • Funding scientific research focused on understanding preterm labor and birth at our network of six Prematurity Research Centers in the United States and Europe. On June 8, we announced a breakthrough discovery to accurately identify pregnant women who would deliver prematurely through a blood test.
