The Nation’s Hispanic Aging Boom

0

WASHINGTON, May 24, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — “We are witnessing an Hispanic Aging boom,” said Jane L. Delgado, PhD, MS, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, the nation’s leading Hispanic health advocacy group. “Hispanics are one of the fastest growing segments of older adults; however, community resources are not meeting the needs of our population. The partnership announced today seeks to change that by supporting new PACE programs in Hispanic communities so that all have access to quality care,” added Dr. Delgado.

PACE is an innovative model of care for persons 55+, often bringing together Medicare and Medicaid funding, and centered on the belief that it is better for the well-being of people with chronic care needs to live and be served in the community whenever possible. Delivering all needed medical and supportive services, a PACE program provides the entire continuum of care and services to people with chronic care needs.

“We all want the best care for our aging loved ones, but getting that care can be frustrating,” said Shawn Bloom, President and CEO of the National PACE Association. “Families who are a part of PACE experience a caring environment in which their loved ones receive quality care, coordination and support is provided so family members have a respite from caregiver duties allowing them to work and support their family’s economic well-being, and a person can continue to live in the community,” emphasized Mr. Bloom.

“PACE is a model of care that has always faced hurdles in accessing sufficient and affordable financing,” said Bob Montanari, Senior Vice President of National Cooperative Bank. “We are delighted to be working with the Alliance and NPA and we expect our commitment will provide new opportunities for PACE development and expansion in Hispanic communities,” stated Mr. Montanari.

“May is Older Americans Month and an appropriate time to honor our nation’s older adults.  If you need information on PACE in your community or other services for yourself or someone you know, we are here to help. Please call our bilingual and toll-free Su Familia helpline at 1-866-783-2645,” concluded Dr. Delgado.

Campaign Launched to Prevent Deaths During Aquatic Activities

0

WASHINGTON, May 24, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — As a result of the growing popularity of water sports and recreational water activities, the Hispanic Communications Network (HCN) and the Water Sports Foundation (WSF) today launched a national multimedia campaign to raise awareness among the Latino community About the importance of using the lifejacket.

The “Prevenir Es Vivir” (Prevention is Life?) campaign includes public service announcements on Spanish radio stations, on social networking platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, as well as on the website of La Red Hispana.org, with the aim of reaching To Latins and Latinos of all ages.

“Every death is regrettable, but the tragic death of the young promise Jose Fernandez reminds us of the importance of following common sense rules when we are in the water, especially the use of lifejackets, so we believe that this campaign cannot be more timely “Said HCN CEO Alison Rodden.

About 84 percent of all aquatic deaths have the common denominator that the victims did not wear a life jacket when they fell into the water due to unforeseen circumstances, according to USCG statistics.

Surveys show that many people are reluctant to wear a lifejacket because they find it uncomfortable or costly, but modern inflatable versions are less restrictive, affordable and allow more precise adjustments for all types of body profiles.

“The message of the campaign is simple but powerful: The vests save lives, use them. The idea is that the next time someone climbs a boat, boat, canoe or kayak, the vest comes first in your mind. There’s no point in a vest if you do not wear it, “said WSF public outreach coordinator Jim Emmons.

The campaign therefore makes available to the public all relevant information to prevent a recreational day in the water from becoming a calamity and recommends following the basic safety rules, including no alcohol consumption in the water and periodic inspections of their equipment.

California Milk Processor Board Launches “California Thrives on Milk” Campaign

0

SAN CLEMENTE, California, May 24, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Recognizing that nutrition education leads to healthier food choices and in support of National Dairy Month in June, the California Milk Processor Board (CMPB) is launching “California Thrives on Milk,” a month-long series of free educational wellness events in select underserved communities that show a marked rate for “food insecurity” across the state.

California’s Rising Rate of “Food Insecurity”
According to the California Association of Food Banks, while California produces nearly half of the nation’s fruit and vegetables, 1 in 8 Californians – 5.4 million – struggle with food insecurity.   “Food insecurity” is defined as the occasional or constant lack of access to food needed for a healthy, active life; and has a serious impact on an individual’s well-being, affecting both learning and work potential, and is positively correlated with low intake of fruits and vegetables, obesity and chronic diseases (1).

In California, Latino low-income adults have the highest food-insecurity prevalence (38.2%) while the rate of food insecurity with hunger was highest for African-American low-income adults.  California counties with primarily rural or agricultural-based economies tend to have the highest rates of food insecurity (2).

“While California is a leading producer of agriculture including wholesome milk, many who live here lack the education they need to support wise eating habits for themselves and their families,” said Steve James, Executive Director CMPB.  “We’re working to change that with a range of free community-based, wellness offerings to help guide consumers to more healthful choices this summer.”

Nutrition Education Shown to Increase Fruit, Vegetable and Milk Consumption
A 2013 USDA study found that children participating in certain nutrition education programs increased their daily fruit and vegetable consumption at home by a quarter-to a third-cup, and were more likely to choose low-fat or fat-free milk.  Participating seniors consumed about a half-cup more fruits and vegetables daily (3).

“California Thrives on Milk” Campaign Launch
Throughout June, the “California Thrives on Milk” campaign will offer a series of free educational activities and events in Los Angeles, Fresno and Bakersfield.  In each market, registered dietitians will host weekend “smart shopping” grocery store tours to help shoppers identify nutritious food choices, understand nutrition labels, and share healthy meal recipes incorporating milk. Additionally, one family in each market will participate in a “Before and After Refrigerator Makeover,” whereby a new refrigerator, freshly stocked with a range of healthful foods selected by a registered dietitian including fruits, vegetables and milk, will be gifted.

Community Partners Lend Campaign Support
In partnership with local community non-profits including the Boys & Girls Club and Hands4Hope LA, the CMPB will execute community improvement projects in each market that will leave a lasting impact.  The family-friendly activities include plantings at shared community gardens and fresh food fairs with healthful cooking demonstrations by a celebrity chef and fitness activities.

The “California Thrives on Milk” campaign supports the USDA’s Summer Meals program, which offers healthy meals for kids when school is out of session.  The program is open to everyone 18 and under, regardless of income and no paperwork or documentation is required.  Families can find Summer Meals locations by texting FOOD or COMIDA to 877-877, calling 2-1-1 or visiting https://www.fns.usda.gov/summerfoodrocks.

E! Reality TV Celebrities
To raise awareness for the effort and encourage participation, the CMPB is partnering with E! network reality TV show stars Liz and Carmen Milian from “Christina Milian Turned Up.” Celebrity chef Liz Milian will lead several cooking demonstrations and share her own favorite healthy recipes featuring milk.

Milk Helps Californians Thrive
According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, milk contains three out of the four nutrients to encourage- Calcium, Vitamin D and potassium- that are often missing from the diet. These nutrients, along with six others, provide important health benefits:

  • Calcium: Builds healthy bones and teeth; maintains bone mass
  • Protein: Serves as a source of energy; builds/repairs muscle tissue
  • Potassium: Helps maintain a healthy blood pressure
  • Phosphorus: Helps strengthen bones and generate energy
  • Vitamin D: Helps maintain bones
  • Vitamin B12: Maintains healthy red blood cells and nerve tissue
  • Vitamin A: Maintains the immune system; helps maintain normal vision and skin
  • Riboflavin (B2): Converts food into energy
  • Niacin: Metabolizes sugars and fatty acids

To learn more about the “California Thrives on Milk” campaign, please visit www.gotmilk.com.

About the CMPB The California Milk Processor Board was established in 1993 to make milk more competitive and increase milk consumption in California. Awareness of “got milk?” is over 90% nationally and it is considered one of the most important and successful campaigns in history. The “got milk?” trademark is a federally registered trademark and service mark that was licensed by the National Dairy Board in 1995 for use in its advertising, including their long-running “Milk Mustache” campaign. The CMPB’s Spanish-language campaign began in 1994 using the tagline “Familia, Amor y Leche” (Family, Love and Milk). The “toma leche” (Drink Milk) campaign replaced it in 2006, in order to better align the English and Spanish language work. The CMPB is funded by all California milk processors and is an instrumentality of the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Brazil Is the Site of the Most Important Internet Event in Latin America and the Caribbean

0

FOZ DO IGUAÇU, Brazil, May 23, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The promotion of integrated efforts at developing the Internet in Latin America and the Caribbean was prominently underscored during the first day of sessions of the meeting LACNIC 27, being held May 22-26 in Foz do Iguaçu.

The opening session featured Ariel Graizer (LAC-IX), Eduardo Santoyo (LACTLD), Demi Getschko (NIC.br), Hartmut Glaser (CGI.br), and Wardner Maia (LACNIC). “Given the overwhelming interest, registration had to be closed two weeks before the start,” said Maia. More than 650 people were in attendance, not including the 420 attending from a distance. The session also included a welcome by LACNIC’s president to the first woman to serve as co-moderator of the LACNIC Public Policy Forum, Paola Pérez.

Demi Getschko stressed the importance of being able to contribute as a co-organizer of the debates generated at LACNIC events. “Several challenges in the Internet space have caused concern, including attacks, regulations and neutrality. It is, therefore, important for us to remain vigilant of aspects such as these that can affect the Internet as a whole,” he explained. Harmut Glaser reminded everyone that “this week, the Internet’s headquarters in Latin America and the Caribbean is Foz do Iguaçu.” Certain topics of special interest to the region, such as IPv6 growth and local traffic exchange, were also highlighted.

The panel on the “Internet of the Future: Its Evolution over the Next 10 Years” was moderated by Oscar Robles, Executive Director of LACNIC, and included members Adiel Akplogan (ICANN), Cristine Hoepers (CERT.br), Flavio Amaral (Netflix) and Matías Quintanilla (Telefónica Argentina). Cristine addressed concerns such as security, stating that these should not focus solely on an attack response, but also implementation of good practices that do not increase the contribution of devices and networks with attacks. Adiel underscored the need to consider privacy at every level of the network. Flavio talked about the increasing interest of companies in providing users with more and more personalized content. Matías wrapped up the session discussing the important role that the 5G will play in the medium-term evolution of the Internet.

The opening session also included ICANN CEO Göran Marby. “The Internet gets larger when we connect and smaller when we disconnect. It is because of this that we need for more people from different places to say what needs to be improved and how. The collaboration that exists in Latin America and the Caribbean is a model for the rest of the world.”

The 27th meeting of the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC) will hold activities through May 26 and is co-organized with the support of the Internet Management Committee in Brazil (CGI.br) and Information and Coordination Nucleus of Dot BR (NIC.br). Those who are interested in following the debates can participate from a distance at http://www.lacnic.net/web/eventos/lacnic27

Auto Care Steps for a Stress Free Road Trip

0

BETHESDA, Md., May 23, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Summer road trip season is here. Taking proactive steps to make sure your vehicle is operating properly will help avoid the hassle and unexpected cost of a breakdown away from home, says the non-profit Car Care Council.

This summer, AAA expects to receive calls from over seven million stranded motorists experiencing car trouble. The majority of issues the travel group anticipates will cause car problems, such as dead batteries and flat tires, can be prevented with a pre-trip vehicle inspection.

“Summer heat can take a toll on a vehicle, especially if it hasn’t been properly maintained,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Whether you do it yourself or visit a trusted professional technician, a pre-trip vehicle check will give you peace of mind and provide the opportunity to make any necessary repairs before you hit the highway.”

AAA also reports that four out of 10 drivers are unprepared for vehicle breakdowns. So you and your vehicle are ready for the road, the Car Care Council recommends taking the following auto care steps before you leave home.

  • Check the battery and replace if necessary. Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging. Excessive heat and overcharging shortens the life of a battery.
  • Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
  • Check the HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) system as proper cooling performance is critical for interior comfort.
  • Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
  • Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.
  • Check the emergency kit and restock, if necessary. Be sure to fully charge cell phones before leaving home.

The Car Care Council also recommends inspecting the brake system and performing a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy.

The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.
