Don’t Get Snowed by Scam Artists this Holiday Season

0
ScamAwareness.org

DALLAS, Nov. 23, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The holiday season is traditionally a time for giving but for scam artists looking to make a quick buck, it’s also a time for taking. ScamAwareness.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about financial fraud, is warning consumers to watch out for three scams that typically increase during the holidays.

ScamAwareness.org

Internet Purchase Scam
The internet purchase scam is consistently the top fraud complaint reported by U.S. consumers each year. According to the National Retail Federation, this holiday season customers are expected to spend an estimated $117 billion online. These shoppers are prime targets for scam artists offering merchandise, gift cards and even pets at a steep discount. Many of these offers look too good to be true, and they usually are. Consumers should never wire money for an online purchase. A money transfer is the same as cash and once it is received it cannot be recovered.

Fake Charity
American charities receive one-third* of their annual donations during the holiday season. Scammers take advantage of this outpouring of goodwill by creating new charities or misusing the name and brand of a well-known charity to get donations sent directly to them. Before donating, consumers should verify that the charity and its web address are legitimate. When sending the money, use a check or credit card instead of a wire transfer or cash for donations.

Holiday Employment
Holiday employment scams have many different twists. Some scammers target people looking to earn extra money by offering a person a job that involves spending money up front for “training” or a “start-up kit” that the victim never receives. Other fraudsters may send a fake check to a “new hire” and ask them to cash it, keep some of the money as payment, and then wire what’s left back to them. The victims in both of these situations end up losing their money and a job they thought they had. Consumers should be aware that no legitimate company will ask them to pay money in order to earn money.

“Consumers should never send money to someone they really don’t know. While they are enjoying their holidays, fraudsters are hard at work plotting to take their money,” said Juan Agualimpia, executive vice president of ScamAwareness.org. “Our organization works year-round to help spread the word about common scams and we hope that all consumers will use ScamAwareness.org as a resource this holiday season to learn how to spot scams and protect themselves and their family members.”

Consumers who think they’ve been scammed should contact their local police immediately. More information about these scams and others can be found at scamawareness.org.

First Customer Recognized by MNAO CEO Masahiro Moro at Los Angeles Auto Show

IRVINE, California, Nov. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — There’s plenty to be thankful for this week, but Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has added to that list by announcing that the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF has officially gone on sale in the U.S. The MX-5 RF arrives two months ahead of its originally announced timing due to shifts in the production schedule.

Photo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20161122/442243

Dave Putter, the first customer to take delivery in the U.S., met with MNAO President and CEO Masahiro Moro onstage at the Los Angeles Auto Show last week to receive his keys ahead of taking home his MX-5 RF Launch Edition the following day. Putter was among the first customers to order one of the 1,000 MX-5 RF Launch Edition vehicles in October and is now the proud owner of his 16th Mazda and his eighth MX-5 Miata.

“Mazda is a unique and special car company that aims to do more than simply sell cars,” said Moro. “We want to build lifelong relationships with our customers and fans, providing them a fulfilling ownership experience they couldn’t get anywhere else.”

Putter’s MX-5 RF was air-freighted to Huntington Beach Mazda, where he took delivery. Approximately 500 additional MX-5 RFs will arrive nationwide beginning in early December, followed by wider-scale availability throughout the winter and spring.

The first-ever MX-5 RF gets its name from its exotic KODO design—”Retractable Fastback”—in which its power-operated top can deploy from closed to open or vice versa in a mere 13 seconds. Complementing the World Car of the Year-winning MX-5 roadster, MX-5 RF satisfies the open-air experience of the soft top model but with a vastly different, coupe-like design and premium accoutrements. It comes powered by a free-revving, 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G engine, paired with either a SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, sending power to the rear wheels.

Available exclusively in MX-5 RF Club and Grand Touring trim levels and starting from an MSRP of $31,5551, the hardtop MX-5 adds a 4.6-inch TFT color gauge display in addition to its folding roof. It is also the only MX-5 variant available with the liquid-metal-like Machine Gray Metallic paint.

MX-5 RF Launch Edition is based on the Grand Touring model and comes finished exclusively in Machine Gray. It is the only U.S.-bound MX-5 model to have Auburn Nappa leather and a hand-painted black top for the 2017 model year.

The winning vehicles are said to reflect the distinctive style, tastes and needs of the influential Latino US population.

Zoo Miami To Open Florida: Mission Everglades Addition On December 10 & 11, 2016

Zoo Miami Logo

MIAMI, Nov. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Locals and tourists alike will want to visit Zoo Miami to experience Florida: Mission Everglades and the grand opening festivities on December 10 & 11, 2016. This new, 4.5 acre, $33 million permanent addition will encourage residents, as well as out of town visitors, to connect with approximately 60 species of wildlife from our own backyard, many of which are endangered or threatened.

Zoo Miami Logo

“We’re very excited to see this project open to the public,” said Zoo Miami Director Carol Kruse. “The goal of Florida: Mission Everglades is to give our visitors a deeper understanding of the importance of the Everglades and to engage them in helping us save it. We want visitors to be inspired to actually visit the Everglades.”

Just past the new main Entry Plaza, Florida: Mission Everglades will be the first lobe of the zoo that visitors can enter. Upon entry, guests will immediately be greeted by the sights and sounds of a songbird aviary filled with blue jays, various doves, red-bellied wood peckers and other native birds. Next, they’ll pass by a naturalistic lake full of pelicans and wading birds like roseate spoonbills, egrets, herons, and more. Just down the path and under a covered walkway, fun-seeking guests will be able to slide through the North American river otter exhibit and crawl through a tunnel at the American crocodile exhibit.

For adults looking for a break and little ones needing to burn energy, there is the Cypress Landing Playground. Complete with a colorful, giant, water shooting “cypress tree” and “cypress knees” as well as climbable play structures for kids of all ages, this will certainly be the new favorite hang-out. Refreshments, snacks and sundries will be available for purchase at the Cypress Landing Café.

Farther along, guests will be able to come face to face with Florida’s biggest and most impressive land mammals, the North American black bear and the endangered Florida panther. Several viewing opportunities and interactions exist here including a training wall where zookeepers can demonstrate the animals’ natural behaviors. Terrariums along the path will captivate guests with native reptiles and amphibians such as anoles, green tree frogs, box turtles, rat snakes, water snakes and more. Further along the path is the home of the small, long-legged burrowing owl, the gopher tortoise (a keystone species that digs burrows that provide shelter for hundreds of other animals) and the timid, yet inquisitive, nine-banded armadillo.

Finally, an elevated boardwalk area displays the ever iconic American alligator and offers an adventurous rope bridge for those seeking “danger.” Unobstructed views of rehabilitated bald eagles will fill guests with pride for this majestic national symbol.  A whimsical “tree house” will give glimpses into the elusive bobcat, the ever-resourceful raccoon and gray fox exhibit. Adding entertainment to education, the new addition will also feature a special “Lostman’s River ride” that allows the guest to float through the heart of the “Everglades” on a slow-moving boat with surprises around every bend.

The first phase of this project was the development of the new Entry Plaza that opened on July 15, 2016.  It features new ticketing offices, a 3,500 square-foot gift shop, as well as a 2,300 square foot “Florida Room” to host public and private events. Visitors are greeted with a sleek 3D Zoo Miami sculptural sign, colorful life-size animal silhouettes, and a lit 50 foot Zoo Miami tower.   Some of the animal silhouettes contain misting features to cool down guests, and all of the animals represent a migration to a “watering hole” – the beautiful flamingo pond. This is the first time in Zoo Miami’s history that an animal exhibit is accessible to guests prior to the turnstiles.  The plaza is partially shaded by a “cloud-like” roof structure, which provides a contemporary aesthetic for entry, exit, day and evening events.

Both phases of this project were a collaborative effort of the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, Zoo Miami and Zoo Miami Foundation. This project was funded primarily by the “Building Better Communities” General Obligation Bond Program.  Guidance on interpretive elements were provided by the Everglades Foundation and Everglades National Park. Private support included gifts from: Dr. Mark Brown and Josie Romano Brown; The Cobb Family Foundation, Ambassador Sue Cobb and Ambassador Chuck Cobb; Florida Community Bank; The Helliwell Family Foundation; James A. Kushlan Ph.D.; The estate of Beth Krone; Main Street Dental; Marc and Robyn Osheroff and family; Publix Super Markets Charities, Inc.; and Sara H. Woodruff Foundation and Jack and Libby Madden.

Florida: Mission Everglades images by Ron Magill are available at: http://bit.ly/2fxVhCm.   Interviews with the Zoo Director and Zoo Communications Director are available upon request.

Labor Commissioner Launches Online Registration Process for Garment Manufacturers

0

OAKLAND, California, Nov. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Labor Commissioner’s Office has launched an online system to make it easier for garment manufacturers to register with the State of California.

“Garment registration laws help to combat sweatshop conditions and root out the underground economy,” said Labor Commissioner Julie A. Su. “This new online registration system offers garment manufacturers or contractors an easy way to apply for, or renew, registration certificates to comply with the law.”

The online application is part of the Department of Industrial Relations’ effort to upgrade departmental systems in order to improve customer service. It allows applicants to save their application in progress and submit it when completed along with required attachments. Fees can be paid by credit card or electronic funds transfer. Application instructions and a checklist are posted on the website.

The Garment Manufacturing Act of 1980 requires that all employers engaged in the business of garment manufacturing register with the Labor Commissioner and demonstrate adequate character, competency, and responsibility, including workers’ compensation insurance coverage. Garment manufacturers who contract with unregistered entities are automatically deemed joint employers of the workers in the contract facility. The Labor Commissioner’s Office has posted a garment registration database that details whether manufacturers or contractors are properly registered.

For more information on the online process, contact the Licensing and Registration Unit at (510) 285-3398, calls from the public are answered Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8am to 5pm, or by emailing [email protected]

The Labor Commissioner’s Office, formally known as the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE), is a division of the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR). Among its wide-ranging enforcement responsibilities, the Labor Commissioner’s Office inspects workplaces for wage and hour violations, adjudicates wage claims, enforces prevailing wage rates and apprenticeship standards in public works projects, investigates retaliation complaints, issues licenses and registrations for businesses and educates the public on labor laws.

Special Health Care District Board Takes First Step Toward New Health System for Maricopa County

0

PHOENIX, Nov. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Maricopa County Special Health Care District Board of Directors today took the first step in building a new health system by unanimously approving an agreement with Vanir Construction Management, Inc., to provide pre-award programming for Integrated Program Management Construction Services.

The 3-month contract allows Vanir to work with MIHS staff and physicians to develop and align Integrated Program Management objectives for the new facilities, including budgetary and time criteria; performance expectations; roles, relationships and responsibilities; and stakeholder engagement needs.

Once that work is completed, the information will serve as the foundation for a final contract award to provide Integrated Program Management for Construction Services to develop MIHS’s new health care facilities.

“Thanks to overwhelming support of the residents of Maricopa County, we’re proceeding down parallel tracks – planning for new facilities while continuing to provide high quality care in our existing buildings,” said MIHS President and CEO Steve Purves. “We are excited to be moving forward with a plan that will allow MIHS to sustain its historic role as Maricopa County’s largest teaching hospital and safety net system of care.”

Voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 480 in 2014 to develop, improve and expand MIHS’s healthcare facilities in Maricopa County. MIHS includes the Maricopa Medical Center, the Arizona Burn Center, Level I Trauma Center, the Arizona Children’s Center, two behavioral health facilities and 13 Family Health Centers located across Maricopa County.

“The size and scope of Maricopa Integrated Health System’s plans makes it one of the most ambitious and significant projects ever in Arizona,” said Vanir Construction Management President Guy Mehula. “We will put Vanir’s long history of serving healthcare clients to work on behalf of MIHS and Maricopa County residents to fully integrate planning efforts to provide modern and safe facilities that maximize quality healthcare outcomes for all.”

Among other priorities, the Proposition 480 project includes funds to help determine how MIHS can best continue to serve the county’s mental health needs, including construction of a new behavioral health facility. In the interim, MIHS plans to add 22 adult inpatient behavioral health beds for patients with medical conditions who have a psychiatric condition as the primary diagnosis. These beds will be located on the third floor of Maricopa Medical Center.

About Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS)
Located in Phoenix, Ariz., Maricopa Integrated Health System has a proud tradition of being both the community safety net health care system, with a mission and commitment to serving the underserved and Arizona’s only public teaching hospital. MIHS consists of Maricopa Medical, the only Level I Trauma Center in Arizona verified by the American College of Surgeons to care for both adults and children, Arizona’s only nationally verified Burn Center serving the entire Southwestern United States, MIHS’s McDowell Healthcare Center, which is the largest provider of HIV primary care in Arizona, the Refugee Women’s Health Clinic, the Arizona Children’s Center, two behavioral health centers, and 13 neighborhood Family Health Centers. WHITE PLAINS, New York, Nov. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Zika crisis is not over until a safe and effective vaccine is available.  While March of Dimes welcomes the World Health Organization’s recommendation to develop a longer-term Zika response mechanism, the impact of this disease on babies must be recognized as distinct among other infectious threats, meriting an escalated response. March of Dimes remains deeply concerned about the disproportionate impact that Zika infection can have on pregnant women and their babies. Regardless of how Zika virus is classified in the future, it must continue to be recognized and resourced as an urgent public health issue.
