Blue Jay Volunteer Efforts Help Out Minnie’s Food Pantry

CARROLLTON, Texas, July 30, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — A group of volunteers from Blue Jay Wireless participated in the company’s Give a Day initiative at Minnie’s Food Pantry in Plano in July. That visit became more than just a regular volunteering effort. When the Blue Jay team arrived, the staff of Minnie’s informed them of a crisis at hand. Their main walk-in freezer had shut down overnight, leaving thousands of dollars worth of meats spoiled and unusable. Cheryl “Action” Jackson, Minnie’s founder, was in shock to discover the malfunctioned freezer, knowing it meant they would have to turn away so many people for the day. Boxes of dry goods were handed out to those in need who did come by that morning, in lieu of the meat being unavailable.

Blue Jay Wireless

Blue Jay made a donation to allow Cheryl to go buy new meat and other food to replace everything that was lost. Other groups on hand donated cleaning equipment and supplies to help in the effort. With the greater task at hand, an assembly line of humanity pitched in to do anything and everything needed to get things back to normal, so Minnie’s can continue being a source of meals for Plano and beyond, as soon as possible.

That volunteering effort turned out to be more of a rescue mission. The hard work of everyone involved enabled them to move boxes of dry goods, furniture and supplies away from the drainage of the freezer. The freezer was emptied out and the spoiled contents were disposed of, so the cleaning could begin.

Minnie’s utilizes a philosophy based on a quote from Mother Teresa, and that is “If you can’t feed a hundred people, feed just one.” That rang true on this day, as Minnie’s wasn’t able to accommodate meals for as many people as usual, but they were able to feed a few with what they had on hand. Minnie’s now is back to business as usual and running better than ever. Blue Jay and Minnie’s both believe in making a positive impact in the community and making a difference in society.

Blue Jay Wireless

CARROLLTON, Texas, July 29, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — On July 27, 2016, Carter BloodCare’s mobile unit made a stop at Blue Jay’s corporate office so the staff could make life-saving blood donations. The majority of the Carrollton staff joined the effort to supply the much-needed donations. Not only will their efforts contribute to research in important areas, the estimation is that at least 30 lives will be forever changed with the blood raised during Blue Jay’s in-house Give a Day.

Blue Jay Wireless

Community Relations Manager, Shannon Davis explained, “Giving blood is one of the most impactful efforts a person can make with their #giveaday. I think the best thing about this particular drive was that several people said this was the first time they had ever donated blood because they were scared. Those people stepped up to the challenge and donated and said afterwards that they would be giving more often because they know the process now.”

The corporate office will be hosting Carter BloodCare again in October so Blue Jay can continue their life-changing efforts. As the socially conscious technology provider, Blue Jay believes in making as many contributions to their community as possible. Mrs. Davis hopes that even more first-time donors will join the effort on the next drive. She notes, “Give a Day is not just about making a difference that day; it is about inspiring others to create ongoing change.”

“This is the News We’ve Been Dreading”: March of Dimes Reacts to Reports of Local Transmission of Zika Virus in Continental U.S.

March of Dimes Foundation Logo

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., July 29, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The March of Dimes today released the following statement from Edward R.B. McCabe, MD, PhD, senior vice president and chief medical officer, regarding the first locally-transmitted case of Zika virus by mosquitoes in the continental United States:

March of Dimes Foundation Logo

“This is the news we’ve been dreading.  The March of Dimes is deeply concerned about reports of Zika virus transmitted locally by mosquitoes in Florida and the risks to pregnant women and their babies. It’s only a matter of time before babies are born with microcephaly, a severe brain defect, due to local transmission of Zika in the continental U.S. Our nation must accelerate education and prevention efforts to save babies from this terrible virus. Federal, state and local authorities are doing the best they can with the limited resources available to them, but much more is needed.

“It is especially unfortunate that Congress adjourned for the summer recess last week without passing legislation to provide more federal resources to combat Zika.  Congressional leaders should do everything in their power to ensure that they will be ready to send bipartisan legislation to the President’s desk immediately upon their return in September.”

The March of Dimes #ZAPzika campaign provides essential information on Zika protection in both English and Spanish:

  1. Use spray, keep mosquitoes away: make sure it’s EPA registered.
  2. Say you will, embrace the chill: use air conditioning and window screens if possible.
  3. If it’s wet, it’s a threat: remove still water.
  4. Get protected, not infected: wear clothes to prevent bites. Use a condom to prevent sexual transmission.
  5. If you suspect, then connect: call your health care provider if you are at risk of infection.

Continuously updated information is available from the March of Dimes in English at www.marchofdimes.org/zika and in Spanish at www.nacersano.org/zika. Members of the public  can ask questions in both languages at http://www.marchofdimes.org/ask-us.aspx#. The March of Dimes is circulating an online petition to demand action from Congress at marchofdimes.org/zikapetition.”
