“Black Henna” Tattoos May Put You at Risk

SILVER SPRING, Md., July 21, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The summer vacation season is here… time to pack your swim suit, hit the beach, and perhaps indulge in a little harmless fun. What about getting a temporary tattoo to mark the occasion? Who could it hurt? It could hurt you.

Unlike permanent tattoos which are injected into the skin, temporary tattoos marketed as “henna” are applied to the skin’s surface and usually last two to four weeks.  Henna is a reddish-brown coloring made from a flowering plant that grows in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia. For centuries, people have used dried henna, ground into a paste, to dye skin, hair, and fingernails. Henna body art – sometimes also known as mehndi – is still used today around the world to decorate the skin in cultural festivals and celebrations.

However, just because a henna tattoo is temporary that doesn’t mean it is risk free. Today, so-called “black henna” is often used in place of traditional henna and is potentially harmful. “Henna” may contain other ingredients to make the stain darker or longer lasting. Inks marketed as “black henna” may actually be hair dye or a mix of henna with other ingredients. The extra ingredient used to darken henna is often a coal-tar hair dye containing p-phenylenediamine (PPD), an ingredient that can cause dangerous reactions in some people. By law, PPD is not permitted in cosmetics intended for staining the skin. The only permitted use for PPD is in hair dyes, and even then the label must have a cautionary statement.

You may see “black henna” used in places such as temporary tattoo kiosks at beaches, boardwalks, and other holiday destinations, as well as in some ethnic or specialty shops. While states have jurisdiction over professional practices such as tattooing and cosmetology, that oversight differs from state to state. Some states have laws and regulations for temporary tattooing, while others don’t. So, depending on where you are, it’s possible no one is checking to make sure that the artist is following safe practices or even knows what may be harmful to consumers. You may want to check with the local jurisdiction to find out how or if these practices are regulated.

A number of consumers have learned the risks the hard way. Reactions may occur immediately after the application of “black henna” temporary tattoos or even up to two or three weeks later. Reported problems include redness, blisters, raised red weeping lesions, loss of pigmentation, increased sensitivity to sunlight, and even permanent scarring. Some reactions have led to medical treatment, including emergency room visits and ongoing skin sensitivity that can affect day to day activities.

Some people may experience cross-sensitization, meaning that because of a previous exposure and a bad reaction to that chemical, they become sensitized (allergic) to related compounds. These may include:

  • rubber and other latex products
  • certain textile dyes
  • some color additives used in foods and drugs
  • some hair dye ingredients
  • certain medications, such the local anesthetics benzocaine and procaine, sulfonamides, sulfones, sulfa drugs, para-aminosalicylic acid (used to treat tuberculosis)
  • para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) used in some sunscreens and in a number of cosmetics

Different people may experience cross sensitization to other compounds.  If you have a reaction to or concern about a temporary tattoo or any other cosmetic, contact your health care professional. In addition, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asks you to contact FDA’s Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/default.htm. Hundreds of Kmart associates participated in March for Babies events coast-to-cost, including Alasdair James, President & Chief Member Officer at Kmart, who walked with 12-year-old Elijah Jackson, the 2015 National Ambassador for the March of Dimes at Grant Park in Chicago.

Howse, president of the March of Dimes. “With Kmart’s support, premature birth has been decreasing for seven consecutive years and we have helped give more than 231,000 babies a healthy, full-term start in life. CBR & NAHN Partner To Heighten Awareness Of The Importance Of Preserving Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cells

CBR & NAHN Partner To Heighten Awareness Of The Importance Of Preserving Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cells

SAN BRUNO, California and WASHINGTON, July 20, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Cord Blood Registry® (CBR®) and the National Association of Hispanic Nurses® (NAHN®) announced today that they have entered into a collaboration focused on educating health care providers and the public about the importance of preserving umbilical cord blood stem cells. Through active counseling to promote informed decision making by Latina expectant mothers, CBR and NAHN will strive to reach an increasing number of Hispanic families that may benefit from the storage or donation of cord blood stem cells.

Logo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120216/AQ54476LOGO

Umbilical cord blood is a plentiful source of powerful stem cells that can be collected from the cord and placenta shortly after birth. The use of umbilical cord blood as a source of hematopoietic stem cells for allogeneic and autologous transplantation has increased markedly over the last 30 years. Cord blood stem cells have been used in the treatment of more than 80 diseases. Cord blood stem cell therapy is being investigated in patients for regenerative medicine applications in FDA-regulated clinical studies. However, more than 90% of cord blood is presently discarded, limiting the potential for therapeutic use and additional research.

Many expectant parents have the option of preserving their newborn’s umbilical cord blood in either public or private banks. These parents often look to their healthcare providers for accurate, comprehensive information and their decisions may be influenced by culture and language. To help Hispanic families make an informed decision, it is critical that healthcare providers be able to counsel and offer bilingual educational materials about both banking options. Early education is very important because expectant parents need sufficient time to consider this personal decision, particularly when it comes to donating to a public bank, if that is an available option.

“Given the growing demand for information and services related to cord blood storage and donation, it is imperative that NAHN members keep abreast of the scientific and clinical implications of this plentiful stem cell source. NAHN recognizes the importance of providing expectant parents with comprehensive information and educational materials regarding cord blood options,” stated Daniel M. Suarez, MA, RN, President of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses. “As part of their ongoing commitment to advancing medicine and women’s health, nurses and other healthcare providers serving bilingual populations can make a valuable contribution with their advocacy and leadership,” added Mr. Suarez.

“CBR’s collaboration with NAHN is an innovative approach to broadening outreach to patients and providers,” emphasized Geoffrey Crouse, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cord Blood Registry. “As the use of cord blood continues to expand in medical therapeutics and research uncovers more potential applications for stem cells, provider and patient education about cord blood options in Spanish is critical to advancing awareness and expediting life-saving research. The goal is to have more families nationwide donating and storing cord blood stem cells, not discarding them,” noted Mr. Crouse.

The partnership will offer cord blood stem cell education and outreach to Hispanic nurses in the form of continuing medical education, materials support and online resources for those healthcare professionals working with Latino expectant parents. Providing information and resources from both public and family cord blood banking organizations can help patients make the decision that’s best for them.

About National Association of Hispanic Nurses
The National Association of Hispanic Nurses® (NAHN®) is a 501(c)(3), non-profit professional association committed to the promotion of the professionalism and dedication of Hispanic nurses by providing equal access to educational, professional, and economic opportunities for Hispanic nurses. NEWTON, Iowa, July 20, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — In another thrilling Iowa Corn 300, Ryan Hunter-Reay successfully defended his 2014 victory, holding off Josef Newgarden Saturday night at Iowa Speedway for his first – and Honda’s fourth – Verizon IndyCar Series win of 2015.

In 2014, Hunter-Reay’s Andretti Autosport team gambled on making a pit stop for fresh tires during a late-race caution, and he charged through the field for victory. But in tonight’s 300-lap run, Hunter-Reay was in contention throughout the race, and successfully battled Newgarden though the final 24 laps as the pair repeated its 1-2 finish from last year.

Hunter-Reay also emerged victorious at Iowa Speedway in 2012, and his Andretti Autosport team has now won six consecutive Indy car races at the short, but very fast, Iowa oval.

Graham Rahal battled through mechanical issues – including a deflating tire leading to an unscheduled pit stop on Lap 55. Falling two laps off the lead pace, Rahal also fought recurring gearbox issues, which necessitated lengthy stays in the pits and finished fourth, just 4.6 seconds behind Hunter-Reay. The effort moved Rahal to second in the drivers’ championship, 42 points behind series leader Juan Pablo Montoya.

Carlos Munoz finished fifth, his best result since winning at Detroit in May, to give the Andretti team two drivers in the top five. Teammate Marco Andretti continued his run of top-10 finishes, taking the checkers in seventh. He remains the only driver in the series to complete every race lap this season. Continuing his substitute role in place of the injured James Hinchcliffe, veteran Ryan Briscoe finished eighth, equaling his previous best result of the season at Texas Motor Speedway.

Video recaps from this weekend’s Honda activities in Iowa are being posted on the “Honda Racing/HPD” YouTube channel. Produced by the Carolinas Production Group, the video packages can be found in the 2015 HPD Trackside Video Playlist at: https://www.youtube.com/HondaRacingHPDTV.

After back-to-back short oval races, the Verizon IndyCar Series now takes a week off before heading to Honda’s “home” road-course circuit, the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, for the Honda Indy 200 on Sunday, August 2.

Ryan Hunter-Reay (#28 Andretti Autosport Honda) started 9th, finished 1st, first victory of 2015, third Iowa win in last four years: “I love Iowa Speedway, and certainly this team does. We had to work for it. It was a lot of hard work out there tonight. But we felt we had something for them. We went out and earned it. We were a little loose at the start of the race, but I knew we had a strong car. Once the sun went down, the car just came to life. At the end, when it was just me and Josef [Newgarden], I knew we had a shot at it. The car was on rails out there. We’re having a tough year, but tonight was a different deal. This is a huge win for us. It’s great to be back in Victory Lane.”

Graham Rahal (#15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda) started 17th, finished 4th: “That was my hardest race ever. First we had the right rear [tire] go down and then the car just wouldn’t shift. You don’t know how tough that is around here when you’re in traffic and you need to go down to fifth, fourth gear at times and I couldn’t do anything. It was a killer for me. We were quicker than [winner] Hunter-Reay, which is frustrating. When the car was working right, we passed all those guys, but now I’m spent. The car was good, very competitive over the long run and that’s what helped me. Nights like tonight are what build character, and what builds champions. It speaks volumes for this team that we are second in the points. We can win Honda a championship. We’ve got three more races to go and we’re just going to keep our heads down and go forward.”

Allen Miller (Race Team Leader, Honda Performance Development) on tonight’s race: “Congratulations to Ryan Hunter-Reay on defending his Iowa Corn 300 win from last year, and to Andretti Autosport for winning its sixth race in a row here at Iowa. Congratulations and ‘Thank You’ to all our HPD associates. All the hard work that everyone has been putting in really paid off tonight. Congratulations as well to Graham Rahal, who struggled with some shifter issues throughout the race which ended up putting him two laps down, but he battled through them for a solid finish and now stands second in the drivers’ championship. Now, it’s on to Mid-Ohio, where we will fight for another victory in front of a large group of Honda associates and fans.”
